Founded in the 1970s and today active in more than 40 countries, the Animal Liberation Front has in recent years been considered a domestic terrorist group by both the FBI and the Southern Poverty Law Center--despite the ALF's official stance of nonviolence. A clandestine, phantom cell organization, the ALF has functioned as a sort of Underground Railroad for captive animals, executing raids and attacks on animal testing facilities. Yet little has been written about the group or its founder. With unprecedented access by the author, this book tells the story of Ronnie Lee, the unassuming British activist who launched an extremist movement that continues to use intimidation and economic sabotage to advance its cause.

I am happy the book exists, but I wish it was written better. It clearly seems self-published and as if it hasn't gone through a rigorous editing process.

Besides that, content-wise, my main complaint is that I wish he spent more time getting to the heart of how Ronnie's philosophy evolved over time.

He also wrote a biography of Ingrid Newkirk and a history of SHAC. The shortfall of those is that it doesn't seem clear he got direct input from the subjects, whereas he definitely interviewed Ronnie.

I hope he keeps writing books.

Muy interesante para conocer el movimiento en Reino Unido. En mi opinión, la cumbre del veganismo o por lo menos, tal y como yo lo entiendo.
La vida de Ronnie Lee está llena de experiencias, de idas y venidas y desde luego que, se podría considerar que la mía es poca. Del mismo modo, los tres últimos capítulos los he leído con pesar y me han parecido bastante repetitivos. Yo no acabo de ver que la vía política sea una verdadera alternativa. Por lo menos en España, lo veo inviable. Él habla de Reino Unido, claro. Aún así, creo que la explotación de los animales no va a acabar. No solo mientras yo esté viva, sino antes de que el mundo deje de respirar. No hay tiempo y le veo poco sentido a confíar en la política (y no hablo del supuesto anarquismo que predica, tampoco creo que eso vaya a llegar). Por otro lado, me rechina un poco la predilección que se tiene a decir una y otra vez lo mucho que los veganos debemos educar a los otros y la coerción de la que habla Lee que debemos realizar. Puedes intentar educar en tu entorno o en el activismo, sí. Pero hasta cierto punto. El otro no va a querer ver lo que no quiera ver. Y en mi experiencia esto ocurre el 90% de las veces, incluso un porcentaje mucho más alto. Y no solo con el outreach, sino con personas cercanas también. Así que no lo sé. Entiendo que él tiene más vida vivida y que yo, peco muchas veces de misántropa. Pero no veo las cosas tan claras como Ronnie.
En fin, que al final ha sido un poco una vorágine para mí. Que yo no veo como avance que en cuarenta años a futuro se consiguiesen políticas bienestaristas, del estilo "40 metros de espacio entre jaula y jaula". Y sé que no es lo que pretende decir Ronnie, pero es lo que veo que ocurre y ocurrirá probablemente (evidentemente no veo el futuro).
Quizá me ha decepcionado un pelin en este sentido. Por otro lado, agradezco su incansable lucha y su aportación en todos los sentidos a la liberación animal. Y condeno indudablemente, los años perdidos por el régimen carcelario

A historical look at a well known figure

Overall the book is a good look at the life of Ronnie Lee. Starting from the early childhood days into when the ALF was created and now as more of an educator.

Useful for studies on animal lib direct action, but not so much of an enjoyable or engaging read - I struggled to get through it a bit, but useful information on an important actor in this space.
