David-Michael Harding is a life-long writer whose novel, How Angels Die, received critical acclaim. A former semi-professional football player, his writing is hard hitting and passionate. He holds a master’s degree in education and is a former adjunct professor of writing. Most of his days are spent writing from the cockpit of his sailboat, Pegasus, somewhere off the Nature Coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico.
This is a long, very involved intriguing novel about several men who choose to find politicians and heads of state who take from others, hurt others by their power, and who often get away with murder, It has many different characters and in the beginning, it is difficult to remember who is who and who does what. Clayton Rand is a most talented computer forensic designer. He is hired for his protective firewalls. He knows that he has control of these bad men because he can infiltrate their email and websites, do what he wants to hurt them and smart enough not to be traced and caught. He develops a passion to seek out these and destroy them. He has friends whom he convinces can also punish these underhanded, destroying men and women in control but who are never punished. He uses the title of “The Illuminati” and he draws an icon to identify them consisting of the eye on the dollar bill and the letters TIJ.
First he attacks a pharmaceutical company who is selling bogus drugs at extreme prices and in order to teach them a lesson, they hack into the site, he buys enough stock to make it look like it is a great investment, which causes the stockholders to invests thousands of dollars, and then he causes it to fail and all of those stockholders are ruined and the company fails. It can no longer fool the people.
There is an Italian boy, Sam, who ever since he was a little boy, got up at 4 a.m. and helped his father set up a place to sell daily newspapers. His father had ties to the Mafia, and Sam grew up to be physically large with huge muscles and extreme strength. Eventually he joins the Army, becomes a sergeant and is transferred to the Rangers. Then to a group of men called Blackbirds, who are highly trained in various ways of assassination, but who are unknown except to the higher Army officers. Eventually he kills a man for pushing him and he is discharged from the service because he lost control. He isn’t fit for hardly anything else and in the meantime his father has died and he goes back and opens the paper shop, except with internet, there is little call for the daily paper. He met a girl when he was a Blackbird, and she is in the military and a member of JAG. She was always fascinated by him and follows him and they become lovers. He is convinced by Clayton that there are people who need to be punished, and so he as a solo decides who his victims will be. There are a few honest policemen who attempt to find these assassins. Especially after a Congressman was caught with many pornographic pictures on his computer, and was politically is dishonest and Clayton, using the internet, revealed him and he died of a heart attack. There are many other characters on both sides, some who are honest policemen attempting to find these individuals who are taking the law into their own hands. The story ends with a cliffhanger leading to “Return to Power, The New Illuminati, Part 2. After I read a few chapters so that I understood what I was reading, then I couldn’t lay it down. I was given a complimentary copy for an honest review.
The New Illuminati is taking place in America right now. Today! You can see it on the news, hear it in conversations, read about it on Facebook and most importantly, feel it in your heart. Each of the boys in the photograph has their role to play and you can see in them and the other characters your friends, your neighbors and who you wish you dared to be. I see traits of my father, my brothers, my friends. Everyone can recognize something in the characters Harding gives us. Karen is filled with love. Alyn is selfish to the core and only interested power. Four boys growing up under the guidance of a strong man with even stronger beliefs. Still bonded together as adults and each doing his part.
America is poised for change. Many are waiting for that first domino to fall. That solitary weight that leans against the one next to him, that leans against the next until a kaleidoscope of occurrences blossoms across the country. Maybe The New Illuminati is that weight. Maybe it is our current elections. The New Illuminati is a great story with believable characters that make you think about our country and ourselves as a people. The first book ends with the line, "here's the good part". I can't wait to read, "Return to Power" and find out what happens next.
This was an interesting & entertaining read, especially given the current political climate. The inspiration seems to have come right from the evening news. The story is carried by well-formed characters you pull for until a new twist makes you question your loyalty. I have an Italian heritage and I thought there was especially compelling jags along the lines characters in the book with that shared lineage. The subtle dialogue and character of those guys was right on. I was smiling reading many parts thinking this is a story my uncle would tell me and this is just how we would tell it! On to part 2…
I think I saw this story on the national news last week...Or maybe I just wish I had! The description said it was taken from today's headlines and they're not kidding! A perfect mix of well written drama around an excellent story-not the cookie-cutter action/explosion nonsense I've read in the political thriller genre lately. Transparency-ARC in exchange for honest review.
“To those whom much is given, much is expected” Once I started reading this book, I could not put it down. Politicians and public servants who believe they are “above the law” will now be held accountable for their actions: There is no running from “The New Illuminati”. I enjoy Harding's writing style and find it very similar to Ken Follett.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This book’s title was very interesting and what made me request this book. Considering the amount of cyber crime going on what seems like all the time, I wanted to see how this book would be. I have to say that it was pretty interesting and well written. You could sympathize with the characters and understand why the did what they did, but at the same time question yourself on how far you, yourself would be willing to go in a similar situation.
A friend read this as a free Kindle and said it was the best money he never spent. This is a hefty story – literally & figuratively. I’ve gotten freebies before that turn out to be long short stories or short novellas. This is a full blown novel with all the setup and twists you’d expect in this genre, but I was most impressed by the characters. They’re richly drawn and compelling figures inside a terrifically poignant story.
Oh my gosh this book is riveting kept me on the edge of my seat especially as I read the current news with disgust about what's going on politically. This books corrects the wrong! Very good and as always love how this author creates and develops the characters!
This author reminds me of one of my favorites, Richard Russo similar style of writing!
David-Michael Harding has ventured into interesting territory with "The New Illuminati". A modern day thriller, the story builds as Harding develops the characters. You'll enjoy this story as the plot unrolls. It truly could be "ripped from the headlines". With our current political environment, this book gives you a break from it all!
