Listening Length: 9 hours and 1 minute

Zeke Gulden is a ruthless Wall Street exec. His hard-edged, no-nonsense attitude has served him well in the cutthroat business world, but less so in his personal life. When he finds out his ex-boyfriend cheated on him with a coworker, Zeke can’t let go—not until he finds a way to get even. However, his meddlesome father has other ideas. The new hire at the family-owned bagel store is somewhat colorful, but his dad is sure he’s the perfect man for Zeke.

Benny Ruggieri is a fiercely proud New Yorker who dreams of making it big as a costume designer in the theater. In the meantime, he’s working two part-time jobs in the food biz. When his new boss sets him up with his successful son, Benny has zero expectations. If nothing else, he figures he can entertain himself by making the uptight businessman squirm. Instead, the two become unlikely friends with an inexplicable attraction they can’t ignore. Benny might be the one to help Zeke set aside his quest for revenge, if he’s willing to let go and forgive what he can’t forget… and give in to an unexpected kind of romance.

Zeke (only his dad, who doesn't believe in shortening first names, calls him Ezekiel) first meets the boy with the blue hair at a hospital. Benny works for Zeke’s dad George at the family bagel shop (where Rand worked in book 1). When George falls and hits his head, Benny is frantic. He loves George. Everybody loves George … everybody but Zeke.

That’s not quite right. Zeke loves his dad, of course he does, but Zeke doesn’t forgive easily, holding on to hurts and resentments. George, a current member of PFLAG and the nicest man in the world, is a reformed homophobe. Growing up gay on planet George wasn’t easy. George belittled femme men and shamed Zeke every chance he got.

It was Zeke’s mom who was his rock, his support. Now his mom is gone—not dead, but gone nevertheless. She doesn’t remember Zeke or his brothers or her husband George. She only remembers the roses.

Without his mom as a buffer, Zeke barely tolerates George and certainly doesn't want to date the man his father not so subtly pushes his way: the flamboyant, talkative Benny.

The book is told from Zeke’s first-person perspective, so we see Benny only through Zeke's eyes. At one point, Benny accuses Zeke of not really seeing him, but we know that Zeke does. He SEES Benny. He just doesn’t know how to show it, how to say it.

Benny and Zeke are very different people. Benny is Italian Catholic (no worries; there's no religious guilt, Catholic or otherwise, in this book) and an aspiring costume designer. He's quirky and sweet. He puts streaks in his hair and wears slightly outrageous clothing. He laughs easily; adores his big, boisterous family; and looks hot in tight shirts (he looks even better naked, but I digress).

Zeke is not like Benny. A third-generation Polish Jew (YES! Can we get a round of applause here, people?), Zeke is a successful lawyer who works long hours and doesn’t have time for relationships, especially with "obviously gay" men like Benny. Zeke’s expensive clothes, tastefully decorated flat, personal driver—all of it is for show. Zeke has something to prove.

But Zeke can’t help falling for Benny. What starts as clever matchmaking by the meddling George turns into an easy friendship. The two men banter and tease. They both like dirty sex (the scene against the pool table—OH, MY!) and just click on every level. Benny really gets Zeke’s anger and inner turmoil.

Zeke calls Benny his boyfriend and doesn’t want Benny seeing other people (even going as far as sabotaging Benny's date with another man), but when he talks to Benny, he plays it off as pretend. He doesn't want to define the relationship.

The tender joining of the lips felt like coming home. As though every sign, every turn, ever moment before this one was leading me here. To him.

Before Zeke can really be with Benny, he has to learn to forgive and forget: forgive his dad who has redeemed himself a hundred times over, and forget his cheating ex who had an affair with one of Zeke’s coworkers.

There were times I wanted to strangle Zeke for his hardheadedness. He has so many ideas in his head of how things should be that he can’t appreciate what’s right in front of him.

More than anything I wanted Benny’s POV, but this is Zeke’s story more than Benny’s. It's a story about family and forgiveness and singing Gershwin in the moonlight. The epilogue made me swoon. It was poignant and tender, the BEST kind of HEA for two men who really deserve it.

Hayes is a very talented writer. I read an ARC of this book, and it was publication ready, no typos or editing issues. That is how it’s done, ladies and gentlemen.

This story made me cry a little. But it also made me smile a whole lot. Benny is a dream, and when Zeke comes around, he brings a Snickers bar. Trust me, it’s crazy romantic. As a bonus, Hayes includes a couple short scenes with Will and Rand who are as cute & happy as ever

I’m betting Carter, Zeke’s best friends, is up next, and I cannot wait. Carter is wise you see; as he tells Zeke:

“You give yourself away every time you look at him anyway.”

“How do I look at him, smartass?”

“Like you don’t want to look away.”

A Kind of Romance further cements why Lane Hayes is one of my go-to authors. Her stories are the perfect mix of sweet, humor, emotional, and sexy. Book two of the A Kind of Stories is the story of Zeke and Benny. Zeke is the son of the bagel shop owner where Benny works at part time. Past hurts with his dad have shaped him into becoming hard and vindictive, and his relationship with his father is complicated. Benny is quite the opposite which is why Zeke's dad thinks Benny is just who his son needs.

My highlights:

-One of my favorite tropes is opposites attract- and Lane Hayes nailed it! These two were like night and day, but the author showed just why they were perfect for each other despite their differences.
-The main characters. Despite Zeke's hard-edged personality something was endearing about him that made you root for him. Benny- he was fantastic. He had all the characteristics I look for in a friend: funny, loyal, and lovable.
-Relationship development. This is an area of the story where the author excels at. It goes from a barely there tolerance to grudging attraction and friendship, to love. And how the progression takes place is flawless.
-The dialogue. Zeke and Benny's banter was fun and quick witted.
-Smexy times: haaawt. It's Lane Hayes so- to be expected.
-Drama. Never does it become over the top, but it's always on there causing a dull ache. Boy did it hurt though when it came to a head. From 88% on I was in tears.
-The pace of the story was smooth.
-The epilogue. This author has some of the best HEA. Remember how I said I was crying from 88% on? Well, those tears were from hurt at first, but then they turned into tears of joy (and bittersweetness).

As far as this being book 2 in the series- can it be read alone? Yes, but you don't want to miss out on the first one. Trust me!

All in all, this was an excellent addition to the series! This was a great story of hurt/comfort, family, humor, and love. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

*** Amazing, charming, lovable characters, super hot sexiness, and beautiful writing that will hold your interest ! *** We have wealthy Wall Street wiz, Ezekiel "Zeke",

who meets the flamboyant, adorable, "femme", Benjamin "Benny",

and the sparks fly.

Zeke doesn't understand the attraction because he's not his usual type, but the friendship starts slow, the feelings grow, and the relationship begins. Many factors are involved, like Zeke's family, Benny's big Catholic Italian family, their work, and friends, plus exes all fit into this tale. Benny knocks down Zeke's sturdy walls, and they each find comfort in the others presence.

These two men really gel in and out of bed. Terrific hot sex with these guys that you'll love, plus just enough tension to make this work beautifully. I liked the internal thought processes, deep conversations, and the "never-give-up" attitudes, too.

Benny seems to have figured out how to deal with most of his issues, while Zeke still flounders here and there as he lets go of past problems, and moves forward. They are so good for each other.
I highly recommend this absolutely delightful journey these men are on.
ENJOY !!!

Many thanks to dear Ralu for the recommendation ! x

Reread - June 2017 - damn this book is sweet! Lane Hayes sure does know how to write a good romance!!!

4.5 hearts!

“You give yourself away every time you look at him, anyway.”
“How do I look at him, smartass?”
“Like you don’t want to look away.”

I adored this! Probably not as much as the first one because Zeke was not as loveable as Rand, but it was still so incredibly wonderful!!

Zeke’s father is working his meddling magic and trying to marry Zeke off to Benny, a costume designer who works for George (Zeke’s father). When Benny realises George won’t relent until he’s gone on a date with Zeke, he suggests a ‘fake date’ to appease the old man. Zeke and Benny are like night and day, sweet and sour, uptight and flamboyant. One thing they do have in common… both are not interested in the other. That is, of course, until they discover conversation is easy, they have fun together and an attraction is starting to sizzle between them.

I’m going to start with Benny because he is so easy to love. He is flamboyant, but not in a fake-way, but because it's who he is and what he wants to be. He's had a few hardships in life and lives in a big Italian family who always looks at him like he's a bit of a joke, but he's proud of who he is and I love that! Everyone who reads this book will fall in love with Benny.

Zeke is much harder to love and it took a while to warm up to him, especially because this story is only from his POV, so we’re stuck in his idiotic head for the whole time. He’s that type of homophobic that see’s men like Benny as too gay and has issues with him on principle. Man, that pisses me off! He has lots of stupid moments at the beginning of this book and I wanted to throttle him more than once.

I noted my goofy grin in my reflection of my office window and immediately scowled. After this weekend, it would be wise to put some distance between us. As much as I liked Benny, I didn’t want either of us to get the wrong idea.

Instead of enjoying the time he spent had with Benny, Zeke was preoccupied with revenge against his ex for dumping him. Zeke hates to lose and the idea that someone walked away from him and not the other way around grates at him. It felt petty, and many of Zeke’s friends (including Benny) had issues with it. Despite all of this I came to love him. I think the turning point was him pretending to be drunk which enabled him to finally have fun and feel free.

… acting inebriated seemed like a better option than trying to explain why I was here. A sober me didn’t do shit like this. But a drunk me definitely might.
“Maybe I’m just intoxicated by you,” I quipped in an over-the-top lascivious tone.

Much like the first book, the sex scenes were off the charts sexy! The passion and desire reads like a third character when Hayes writes it, and it's a true pleasure to read ;-)

“Damn, that’s hot,” I whispered.
Benny licked my ear and nodded . “Yeah. Fuck me on my knees. I want to watch you in the mirror. I want to see you—”
“Shh. Don’t talk.” I bit my bottom lip when my vision went hazy and then carefully pulled out.

Their fallout was perfect. It wasn't about some stupid misunderstanding or a massive fight about silly unimportant things. It was to do with honest-to-god problems in their relationship that needed to be dealt with before they could move forward together.

The ending was…

…..beautiful, something true romances are made of *insert dreamy sigh here*.

This can absolutely be read as a standalone and I'd highly recommend it to any lover of MM. If you've read the first one, you'll love this one too!! Can't wait for Carter's story.

This was quite.. pretty.
It’s a story about a man coming to terms with himself and his past (including family issues, cheating exes, and something bordering on an existential crisis), who is now finally finding a way to truly be happy by means of forgiveness and love.

The whole thing was really rather romantic, and genuinely felt like a love story. Zeke and Benny had such unique and pure chemistry; they could banter like champs, but could also be entirely open and true with one another other about their fears, issues and emotions (well, about everything other than their feelings for each other, but you know how that goes).

I liked the opposites attract angle of their relationship and how they didn’t seem to like each other much at first, although I must say that Zeke could have pulled his head out of his ass a bit sooner. I didn’t quite understand what his reluctance was with claiming what him and Benny had was “real”, especially after all these months of them being together. It was slightly frustrating, but I suppose it was part of his path to self-discovery.

All in all, Zeke could frustrate me from time to time, but I loved the overall dynamic he had with Benny. Benny truly made him a happier and better person.
I simply loved Benny. He was unapologetically himself, and I adored his sass, witt, and kindness.

All in all, this was quite a beautiful book with some meaningful messages, and a well-developed love story.
I’m not even entirely sure why I didn’t like this book a bit more than I did; perhaps it was that I sometimes caught myself slightly drifting off, or noticed my disengagement with certain aspects. I think I appreciated this book more than enjoyed it.
It was mostly Benny and Zeke’s interactions with each other that I truly found very fun to read about. The rest of the story was okay, and sometimes even interesting, but nothing I could muster up a lot of enthusiasm or sentiment for.

5 BIIIG stars for Zeke and Benny - with a lot of pink roses

I really loved this book! It was phenomenal!!! I read the first half in one standing and I was late for work, a lot, because I just couldn't put it down!

I loved the characters: Zeke so serious and not good with words and Benny was his opposite and not his type at all. Well Benny was so lovable and cute, and smart, and funny, honest and sweet. He was definitely my favorite kind of guy.

Zeke's dad made him date Benny, because he was sure they would be great together. But for Zeke it was hard to do anything his dad asked him, because he was so hurt by his dad's reaction to his coming out as gay in his adolescence. Even if his father changed a lot in time, Zeke couldn't forgive him. And now he was forced to meet Benny for a drink, to shut his father's mouth. But Benny was so sweet and funny, Zeke was mesmerized and one kiss changed it all.

The attraction was huge and together they felt safe, they felt right!

Benny was Zeke's opposite. He was shiny and friendly while Zeke was wearing Armani suits and was too serious.

I loved their funny conversations, but also the way Benny shut Zeke's mouth with only one glance, especially when Zeke was so bad with compliments. But he changed a lot and made me like him too.

This story was so hot!!! In the same time it felt real and very emotional! His father's tears, the way his mother was acting, it broke my heart. But it was also full of sweetness. At first Zeke didn't want to admit his feelings and he really didn't want to name their relationship, but the end of the book broth a big smile to my face. I just LOVE HEA!

This was a wonderful story! I didn't want to skip one single word. I strongly recommend it!!! I absolutely loved it!

Seth Clayton is BONAFIDE!

I'm still a rookie at this audiobook deal but I was blown away by Clayton's narration. He really got into it. Everyone's voice was distinct. If the charactered sighed, he sighed. If they laughed, he laughed. Hell, there was even one time Zeke was eating and he talked with his mouth full! And he did a compelling job with the sexy times too! I have zero complaints about the narration. As a matter of fact, I'd even go so far as to say that I'd listen to an audiobook that I maybe wasn't that interested in if he narrated it.

Watch your 6, Seth #ninjacuddler

This story is quite good. It's a little fake boyfriendish which is usually my jam. The fly in the ointment was Zeke. Zeke needs to get punched in the face, preferably by his seventy-something father. He's a pretentious snob which is sort of ironic considering he labels all of his peers as such. However, I really have to hand it to Hayes to dance with who brung her. Sorry, I lapsed into Southernspeak. What I mean is, Zeke isn't a sympathetic character. He's judgy, vengeful and über competitive in an unflattering way, but Hayes tells this story entirely through his eyes. I admire that, takes chutzpah.

I was empathetic towards him while at the same time barely stifling the urge to tell him that we were playing the quiet game wherein he would be 'it' until further notice. He has daddy issues. I'd go into the whole psychobabble rigamarole but blah blah blee blee blee. He comes around in the end. He has his moments where I cyber high-fived him and-even better-he has to jump through a couple of hoops to get to his HEA. Both of these characters have depth with strong and consistent characterizations which makes for engaging reading.

He and Benny get guilted into a date by Zeke's meddling father who doesn't want his son to die alone. Benny isn't his type, a point which Zeke hammers over and over again usually right to Benny's face.

Benny gives it right back though. He sees through all the BS and I loved him for it. He takes zero shit without being a jerkface about it. Out and proud and a bit femme there was nothing not to like about him and the bottom line is, it matters not what I think about Zeke because Benny likes him. Benny is a positive influence and despite the fact that Zeke's head keeps telling him they have no future, his heart keeps him chasing after Benny like an imprinted duckling.

Some of my favorite moments came from his single-mindedness. From the Gershwin karaoke to the wedding to the pool game, they sort of accidentally wend up in a relationship. The evolution of their relationship seemed natural for two people who genuinely like one another, can communicate about things large and small and have some scorching sex. You'd have to be nutters to not want to spend loads of time with that person, ammiright? However, my most favorite part was the talk Zeke has with his father after he's torched the best part of his life and is lost as to how to fix it. That's the stuff of verklemptitude right there, folks.

I think A Kind of Romance is a better example of Hayes talent than my first experience and I would read more by her. I'm actually really curious about Clay and what his story is. Still has more label dropping and interior decorating than I think is necessary but I think it worked better this time, because pretentious snob. It goes without saying that if Seth Clayton narrates, I'm there. With bells on.

A Kind of Romance can be read as a standalone. I've not read the predecessor but never felt lost.

I'd recommend Seth Clayton to EVERYONE!!!!!!!! And this book to those who like the opposites attract trope.

Re-read: still as fun and I still have a crush on Benny!
-------------------------------------------
I have left my MM-mystery-hole for a few books, since A Kind of Truth sucked me in, and I simply had to read more about Benny.

So Benny is this jack-of-all-trades, but what he really wants to do is sew and design costumes. However at the moment, he works at the bagel-shop where Rand worked in book 1, he works for his family's restaurant, while also doing costumes for 'Spiral' on the side when they're in New York and helping Will with some show in a theater.
description
Ben is FUCKING fabulous! He's unapologetic, and open and friendly, GAWWWW I just wanted to put him in my pocket and bring him home.

Zeke however, Zeke has foot-in-mouth-syndrome, and more than once I wanted to slap him with a 2-by-4. I know he didn't do it on purpose but some of the things he said to Ben, made me cringe, and made me question if Ben really should be hooking up with him.

Well, they meet when Zeke's father (the owner of the bagel-shop) falls, hits his head and is carted to the hospital.
Ben is his usual fabulous self, while Zeke is his usual stoic, diadainful self. However Zeke's father has plans, and a good-old-fashioned guilt trip, gets these two out on a 'date'.
description
They should not work, but slowly and surely they develop a sort of relationship.
Zeke however is not ready to leave his preconceived notions of relationships and 'types' behind, and he keeps in touch with his cheating ex, even though it is clear that his relationship with Ben WORKS.

This book has the same feel and plot-build like the first one, but I have to say that Ben was a shining star. And I loved that he had balls
There is the usual crisis around 70-80% which was annoying, and I really had some issues with Zeke's behavior, but at the same time Ben sucked me in and kept me entertained!
All in all a great, fun romance, and can I please PLEASE have one of Ben?! Thank you.

**** 3.5 stars ****

When reading the sample I was struck by two things:

1. This was going to be chock-full of stuff I don't like -- including family drama and a "fabulous" MC working in the fashion world (shoot me now).

2. Zeke's first-person narrative was so engaging, and the secondary characters so interesting, that I was going to buy the book anyway.

Turns out I made the right choice. This one was a winner. Yeah, I hate family drama, especially family drama that involves parental meddling. But the relationship between Zeke and his father is complex and nuanced, and I found their dynamic fascinating.

As hard-driving, straight-acting Zeke falls for quirky, swishy Benny, he isn't afraid to make a fool of himself. I could definitely feel the chemistry between these two strong-willed men. Their banter seemed fresh and real; in fact dialogue was one of the book's strong points.

So, it was an entertaining read in spite of my initial misgivings. I definitely plan to try more by this author.

I. Loved. Zeke. I think I just got him. I liked Benny too and he was some fun to help smooth Zeke's being so hard on himself and people around him, but Benny's immaturity made my feathers ruffle a few times. It was sweet and Lane's writing pulled me in in a way only she can. And of course it was great seeing William and Rand again.

Lane will always be one of my all time M/M faves. Another recommended one for sure.

Can I get Carter's book plz and thanx?

Everyone seems to love the shit out of this book.... I however, liked it, but it didn't wow me. I actually found it a bit boring ...

 photo 5c5d862c0c10da4dc95bf893466c06a6_zpsfeadvews.jpg

I think it was an oke read and I liked the characters, there was just something missing for me. I also found that Zeke spend way too much time in his head. Pages upon pages about what he was thinking....I started to get annoyed. I wanted less thoughts and more communication and action !!

 photo hqdefault_zpsmnbe0byb.jpg

So....this book is about Zeke and Benny. Zeke is George's son (book 1). George is the owner of a bagle shop and we've met him in book 1. Don't worry if you haven't read that one, because this can be read as a stand alone.

Zeke works on Wall Street. He's a rich, sometimes cold and stoic and lives mostly for his job. He doesn't really do romance and eventhough he's gay...he dislikes man who are overly gay (his words, not mine) His dad is part of the reason for his personality. Zeke didn't have it easy growing up. His dad maybe all about the gay rights now, but he wasn't when Zeke was younger. George was very hard on Zeke and quite the homophobe.

Enter Benny. He is the opposite of Zeke. Flamboyant, Itailian, who acts and dresses exactly the way he wants, without giving a shit what anyone else may think. He's a fashion designer, but also works at the bagle shop for George, since he hasn't made it big yet...

George thinks Benny and Zeke are perfect for each other and tries to set them up. Not wanting to deal with Zeke's dad, both men agree to a fake date en things take of from there. It soon because pretty clear that these two have great chemistry. One thing I do have to admit to, is that these two boys were HOT together !!

 photo tumblr_lu0hfazLaf1qfsi6ro1_500_zpskrawp26a.gif

I totally got where Zeke was coming from. I know George has really tried making amends...he was really sorry for all the things he did to Zeke and he made up for it time and again.......but..... it still happend and it kinda pissed me off, you can't have a do-over of your childhood. Zeke was still holding a major grudge and to be honest, I didn't blame him one bit. That's probably because I'm a major grudge holder myself !!

On the other hand, Zeke also pissed me off, with his "fake boyfriends" crap. He kept denying they were real boyfriends who were in a real relationship. It got annoying after a while.

Benny was a great character, I really liked him !! He made me smile :))

Like I said, I liked it, but I wasn't overly impressed. It's probably a case of it's me and not the book, because everyone really loved this one. I just liked the first book better.

3 - 3,5 stars from me ;)

First of all, I loved the narration of this audiobook!! For me, Seth Clayton nailed this one and I enjoyed listening to him so much! He chuckled, laughed, and even spoke with his mouth full (I'm talking about food here, lol) when the characters did. I'd even say that I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the book so much had I read it. His perfect voices for Benny and Zeke had me smiling almost constantly, laughing out loud at times, and yes, I even shed a tear or two. Karen, thank you so much for pointing this one out to me :)

Benny was awesome and I loved him from beginning to end! So much sass!! He was out and proud and loud and colorful and sweet and sexy and I loved it all! The banter between both guys was also great!

Zeke was... he was kind of an arrogant asshole at first and judged Benny for his appearance alone until he got to know him better and started to see him for the strong, wonderful man he was.

Benny wasn't afraid to put Zeke in his place and they soon started some sort of a fake-boyfriend relationship - that really wasn't fake at all and I'm pretty sure they both saw it for what it really was pretty quickly. They just didn't acknowledge it. And that's one part that I felt was a little too drawn out. The 'we date, we're exclusive, we don't want to share the other but we aren't real boyfriends' story line. There were some more small niggles that had mostly to do with Zeke but he also had some great moments where I cheered him on so it was balanced enough. The conflict resolution (it was pretty obvious what the conflict was going to be IMO) was a bit too rushed for my taste.

So overall I really enjoyed this book and it made me (mostly) happy. I'm sure I'm going to listen to it again soon.

~3 stars for the story, but 5+ stars for Benny.~

SERIOUSLY, MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD.

I'm sorry to be the only person that didn't love this book, but it's only a dissenting opinion in a pool of 5 star reviews so....

I'll do my best to explain what didn't work.

Zeke's actions didn't resonate with me at all.

At first he's an ass and offensive towards Benny. Fine, that's understandable (to a point). Then he wants Benny to be his fake boyfriend. Then he admits having a crush on him and goes after him, making a fool of himself in the process. Oh, but he "doesn't want to be real boyfriends". No, he just wants a fuck buddy, but not a secret one. Huh?
And then he goes back to be an ass, acts like an idiot, and lets Benny go. And then he goes after Benny again and proposes to him ! Are you with me?

His mood changes and actions towards Bennie, with only a few pages of inner monologues in between, gave me whiplash.

I found the plot to be weak and some of the scenes contrived.

I didn't get the whole point of Zeke's "revenge plan" and I don't see what it had to add to the story. Other than hurting Benny over and over again and proving that Zeke was a vindictive bitch. He wasn't planning a revenge at first (he was even considering getting back with his cheating ex!), but when he found out that Clay was married, he changed his mind? Why?

I saw the falling out a mile away. And it was contrived as shit and stupid on Zeke's part.

What saved the book for me was the writing, because I do love the author's style a lot, and Benny. Benny gets all the stars.

I hope Carter gets a story next.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I wanted to like this story so much!
It started well, engaging and funny but at some point it started to get on my nerves.
Therefore, I'm afraid this is going to be the odd review among loads of 5 Stars.
Let me start with beautiful Benny.

Benny was a free spirit connected to the arts. His dream was to make it big as a costume designer in the theatre. While waiting for this to happen, he was working some shifts in Zeke’s father’s bakery and at his family restaurant.
Benny was flamboyant, sweet, bold, sassy, confident, kind, and extremely generous.
Now, don’t fool yourself, because at the same time, Benny was a very brave and strong guy who learned to accept who he was. He was a guy full of attitude in the best of ways.

Enter Zeke.

Zeke was described as a ruthless Wall Street executive. To me, he was a boring, conservative and uptight businessman. He had nothing in common with Benny and I am OK with that. Couples can be different, right? Opposites attracts and all that…
What was not OK WITH ME, were the constant comments made by Zeke about Benny.
I would accept one or two pearls from Zeke because I understood how nervous and uncomfortable Zeke felt with Benny. However, it was too many (pearls). And it started to rub me in a wrong way, so much to the point that I couldn’t get back to enjoying the story like I did at the start.

Here are some quotes that you might don't want to read if you haven't read the book yet.

Zeke’s father playing matchmaker:

Or

Zeke drove me crazy with his bad habit of offending Benny while trying to make a compliment.

He was charming in a weird way. Emphasis on weird.

“You look … brighter than the last time I saw you,”

Or when he was being a pig sexist gayist .

I also didn’t get where Zeke was going with the revenge plan against his cheating boyfriend. Why was he leading his ex in phone calls that lead to nothing, is still a mystery to me.

My 3 Stars are going to Benny and Zeke’s father who was a character I feel I have to mention due to his sensitivity and humility to recognise and regret all the mistakes he did in the past with Zeke.

Clearly, I am in a minority here. So, please, don’t let my personal opinion to put you off of reading the story. You might have a blast!

Benny felt familiar somehow… like I’d known him for years. It wasn’t déjà vu, though. It was more like coming home.

-ˏˋ My Overall Thoughts ˎˊ-

Why have I been sleeping on Lane Hayes as an author? Because obviously I'm a trash person who needs to rethink their life choices.

A Kind of Romance had all the tropes that I consistently love.

✔️ grumpy emotionally constipated hero
✔️ sunshine love interest
✔️ grumpy serious slightly workaholic hero
✔️ banter for days
✔️ tear inducing (the good kind) family dynamics
✔️ hot as fuck sexy times - that pool table though
✔️ a love interest who doesn't put up with the heroes shit
✔️ opposites attract
✔️ a romantic as fuck happily ever after
✔️ also BAGELS. lots and lots of bagels

Basically this book was clearly tailor made for me and I loved it to pieces. Let it be known that this is the last time I underestimate LANE HAYES. Also, I guess I have no choice but to read the rest of the books in the A Kind of Stories series now ✨😉

5 Stars for Zeke and Benny!!–
"The Very essence of romance is uncertainty." - Oscar Wilde

This is book two in Lane Hayes A Kind of Story Series and she is back and better than ever! This author continues to blow me away with her ability to weave a story so flawlessly that the reader cannot do anything but fall in love with it!  This series is set in New York and Ms. Hayes does a great job of building the setting up so you almost feel like you are walking down the street in New York City while enjoying the love story of two fun lovable characters.  In Book one of this series, A Kind of Truth, we met Benny Ruggieri as he played the support character to Will one of the MC in A Kind of Truth.  Now Benny is back and this time we get to find out his story, but as with everything else -- nothing in Benny's life is plain so hang on it's a colorful ride! Our two MC in this story are Zeke and Benny and they are going to show you, A Kind of Romance ~

Ezekiel "Zeke" Gulden is the son of George Gulden (another repeat character from book one) who owns Bowery Bagels.  Zeke is the only one in his family that has not followed in the family footsteps working as a bagel maker/shop owner - instead he is a cutthroat ad exec that works on Wall Street.  Zeke and his father's relationship is strained and they don't interact much, so one morning when Zeke gets a phone call from a strange voice on his fathers cell phone - letting him know his Dad is at the hospital - Zeke feels both frustrated that he is being bothered, curious about who is calling him, and worried about his Dad all at once.  Yes, Zeke is a messed up guy - he has issues and can't let go of the past and once he has been wronged he has a really hard time letting it go.

Zeke Arrives at the hospital only to find the person who called him is one of a kind.  He was the total opposite of what Zeke was usually attracted to -dark hair streaked with electric blue, expressive eyes, beautiful smile,  wearing lip gloss and loud clothes-but when he shook his hand and the zing went through his fingertips to his heart and down south, he knew his life would never be the same.

"He was everything I didn't usually go for, but fuck, he felt amazing."

Benny has just started his job at Bowery Bagels and he loves it.  Although he has studied costume design and theater at NYU he knows his way around the world of food service since his family owns Johnnies a well-known authentic Italian restaurant.  Benny is devoted to his family.  He wants to be loved. He yearns to find someone who will understand him and who he can be himself with, he doesn't have any misguided notions that his someone could be Zeke.

"Let me assure you, Mr. Gulden..if a guy isn't man enough to deal with a little color, then he isn't man enough for me."

The attraction between the two is strong but is it enough to be more than just fake-boyfriends who have sex? Would Zeke ever be happy with someone who didn't fit his model of what a perfect guy should be? Is Benny able to be with someone who is so stuck in the past and bent on revenge that he can't move forward?

"The best things in life aren't always the ones made to order.  You wanted tall, handsome, and well-spoken, and you got it with Taylor.  You overlooked his vacuous interior and the fact he cheated on you during most of your so-called relationship because it was easier than admitting you were wrong about him.  When I say 'be open,' I mean go with what makes you feel good and stop worrying about how things look."

The Chemistry - is off the charts!~

"You're a nasty boy, Benny.  I think I could fall for your kind of dirty. "

There are misunderstandings, laughter, anger, passion, angst, lust, love, and all sorts of emotions as these two opposites attract -- these relationship negotiations prior to their Kind of Romance beginning gives you a taste of some of their perfect banter  - "Don't talk, Zeke.  You're dong that thing where you're insulting without meaning to be." Benny knows how to keep Zeke in line and does it without even a sharp businessman noticing  -- "What about rules?" "Basic, 'don't be an ass' rules apply at all times, but otherwise.. let's not overthink."

What happens when you fall in love with your fake boyfriend? If Benny and Zeke are involved you have all kinds of fun!!
This book has it all!  Oh, and did you see that gorgeous cover!! 5 Stars to A Kind of Romance ~ Can't wait for the next book!!

It can be tough to do a simple romance, without a second genre, without angst and pain, with guys who are just ordinary, appealing, interesting characters. Lane Hayes has succeeded admirably in giving us Zeke, a driven Wall Street exec whose motivations are both his own personal drive, and his deep need to prove himself to his father. Not so much his current father, as the shadows of the man from his childhood - the guy who didn't understand or appear to accept a gay son.

Benny is everything Zeke shies away from - too flamboyant, too soft, too gay in ways that can't be hidden or ignored. And yet, Benny has the courage of owning his identity, and a bubbly personality, and a warm heart. In the cold competitive world where Zeke excels, bubbles and warmth and that kind of courage are rare. Zeke can't help being just a little attracted. And a little taste of Benny only shows how special this guy is. Zeke got where he is to prove he was as good as any straight guy, despite his father's disdain. Now he has to discover the kind of man he wants to be, for himself.

This is a smooth, easy read with some laughs, some gentle warmth, and some heartache. It'll go on my comfort-reread shelf, and I will buy more from this author.

4.5 Stars!

Pretty mad at myself for not reading this one sooner. I saw some reviews that kind of turned me off so it went to the "some day I'll read this one" pile. But with book #3 coming out soon, I decided to give this one a go.

And surprisingly enough, I really really liked this one.

Benny was perfect!

He gets all the stars.

Zeke, well....he was the one I was worried about. And while I did like him more than I thought I would there were definitely times I wanted to junk punch him.

And don't get me started on the conflict. Saw that coming about 6 miles away. BUT, it's all in how the drama is handled and it was resolved nicely here.

Lane Hayes is without a doubt an auto-buy author for me. And this one was a great addition to the series. Cannot wait for Carter's book!

Loved this sequel to A Kind of Truth, and just as I wanted, my sweetheart Benny got his HEA but not without problems...well, it wouldn't be M/M fiction if there wasn't a little angst, now would it hehe?? I hold my hands up and admit to some tears, mostly for the Zeke/Mr G situation but so, so happy that Zeke finally forgave his dad. Can only hope Carter is the MC in the final story in the trilogy [Lane has confirmed YES, and there is possibly a book 4!!], and as far as the Tyler/Clay pairing was concerned?? Good riddance to bad rubbish, the pair of them. 5 stars Lane, and thanks...I hope Seth Clayton will be doing this audio book too?? [again, probably] :D

Kind of romance was kind of frustrating for me…

Don’t get me wrong, it was a good read but there was something that didn’t work for me.

This book is about Zeke and Benny. We saw Benny in Kind of Truth, he’s Will’s colorful and fabulous friend and Zeke is the bagel store owner’s son who we didn’t actually meet in the previous book but he was casually mentioned once.

Benny started to work in George’s bagel shop after Rand left. He and Zeke meet in the hospital after George faints and hurts his head and almost out of the blue George wants to set up Zeke with Benny. Both men agree to go out on a few dates to get George out of their hair and they develop a kind of ‘friend with benefits’ relationship.

Zeke and Benny couldn’t be more opposite. Zeke is a stoic and well-loaded guy who works at Wall Street and Benny is a flashy and wacky Italian guy who dresses the way he wants, does whatever he wants and dyes his hair in different colors almost every day.

I gotta point out that Zeke had lots of issues. His boyfriend cheated on him, his father wasn’t always as supportive as he is now and that made him very resentful and wary in life. But dude, I don't think he needed to to be overcomplicated. Not to mention that sometimes I just didn’t get his behavior.

I had some issues with Zeke from the very beginning, especially when he thought that Benny was ‘too gay’. What the heck? For me, there isn’t such a thing as ‘too gay’! You both like men, you both like cock, you are both gay. Period. The way Benny dresses doesn’t make him ‘gayer’ than a man who wears suits and doesn’t dye his hair! *eye roll*

I guess what kept me from loving this story as much as I loved the previous book was Zeke. His attitude drove me crazy, he was too predictable. He just annoyed the hell out of me, he was so self-focused and his need for revenge was absurd to me.

As I said, he was overcomplicated and the problems he had with Benny almost at the end would’ve been easily avoided if he just had walked away from his asshole ex-boyfriend but he had this thing of wanting to prove he was better than everyone and his huge ego was what brought him lots of troubles.

*takes a deep breath*

Moving forward, I liked Benny very much and I think he and Zeke were cute together but I am not head over heels with their relationship, the sex was hot but I found myself skimming it after 60% because being too much time in Zeke’s head was giving me an aneurysm.

I can’t deny Lane’s style his really good, her stories are usually pretty realistic and that can be good and bad at the same time. It can be bad because sometimes I don’t like to read about people I’ll usually avoid. If I encountered myself with someone like Zeke I will a.- smash his head against the wall till he stops being so self-focused or b.- run in the opposite direction before I smash his head against the wall and he presents charges against me. LOL

Overall, it’s a good read. Don’t mind me; I just don’t stand people like Zeke in general but if you don’t have the same issues like me, you’ll probably enjoy this more than me.

"...Snickers and Gershwin in the moonlight."

Zeke and Benny were not the couple I was expecting, tbh. I thought Isaac was going to be the one for Benny. And then when I reread A Kind of Truth, I can see where Hayes sorta kinda prepared us for it.

Zeke is a Wall Street exec and the only one of Mr. G's sons who didn't go into the bagel business (We met Mr. G in A Kind of Truth as the bagel store owner that Rand worked for). Benny is now working part time at the bagel shop to make some extra cash, and these two meet when Mr. G is involved in an incident that sends him to the ER.

Benny and Zeke don't mesh well right away. They're polite enough to each other, but Mr. G - in a way only a meddling, pushy parent can do - semiforces them into agreeing to go on a date. Neither is interested. But both love Mr. G enough to fake it.

Zeke can appreciate that Benny is attractive, but Benny isn't his type. He likes tall, muscular, and masc. And Benny.......wears pink and has a bit of a swish. On Benny's part, Zeke is a corporate shark - he's competitive, manipulative, and lives for work. And he clearly doesn't like Benny's shirt.

So, the date? Best part of the book. This is where Hayes nails it every time for me. She makes everything so realistic with relationship buildup. There is never insta-love. Neither man shows up expecting more than to have to ENDURE an hour of the other's company just to tell Mr. G they tried but they're just gonna be friends. But a little push/pull never hurt anyone either, right Benny?

"You've turned up the volume and you want to see if I can take the extra dose of fabulous," I stated with a slow grin. "I'm onto you."

These two start the date off with banter but move into a tentative friendship with a healthy dose of attraction that both acknowledge.

Both men must learn to let preconceived notions go and stop worrying what others think. And Zeke, especially, has to let the chip on his shoulder finally fall off.

Pacing was masterful until the very end, where it suddenly felt very rushed. We do get a lovely HEA, as Hayes always gives us. I love this author and this one is recommended!

I was an infinitely better man when I was with the boy with the blue hair.

There's a somebody
I'm longin' to see
I hope that he turns
Out to be
Someone to watch over me

Won't you tell him please
To put on some speed
Follow my lead
Oh, how I need
Someone to watch over me

When hard-driving Zeke is set up with Benny by his father, Zeke is positive that Benny is the last man he would fall for. Before too long, Zeke realizes that Benny may be the only one. But when Zeke keeps trying to even the score on past wrongs - with his exboyfriend, with his father - can Zeke truly forgive and move on as Benny asks?

A Kind of Romance is a story about forgiveness, family, love ... bagels and ... Italian weddings. It's got heart and an almost old-fashioned feel to the story. You can envision it as an old black and white movie - two lovers drawn together despite their different background and interests, realizing that love isn't the big grand gestures, it's "a familiar touch, or a soft sigh in the dark." Lane Hayes' prose is downright lyrical - you could set her words to a Gershwin or Cole Porter tune:

Benny felt familiar somehow ...like I'd known him for years. It wasn't deja vu, though. It was more like coming home.

Benny's laughter sounded like a long-forgotten melody to a song I'd once known well. It was happy, light, and joyful, and at that moment, I wanted nothing more than to be with him.

Miri showed me how. She showed me that love isn't just a word, it's a way of life. I may have failed at a few things, but when my time comes, I won't go a failure because I have loved.

Sure, there is hot, oh so hot, chemistry between Benny and Zeke: "I like sex hard and dirty and a little out of control. I smacked his ass to urge him on and braced myself for the steady erotic assault as his hips flew double time." But there is such a tender romance as well. There is not a wrong note in this book (yeah, see what I did there?) and it holds your interest every step of the way. I can't say enough good things about this book - fire up the Kindle, put on some Gershwin and start reading!

3.75 stars rounded up

Some things I liked way better than the previous book, A Kind of Truth. I liked that there were no bitchy, two-dimensional 'villains' here. The conflict mainly comes internally, with Zeke's inability to forgive or to let go, and how he kept insisting that he and Benny were not real boyfriends. Oh, and I truly loved that last scene between Zeke and his father, George. I cried over that. Couldn't help it *sniff*

As the main narrator, I liked Zeke slightly less than Rand, though. I knew that he would do something stupid because of his personal attitude, so I was not as patient with him. He also spent a little too long thinking, so the story felt rather dragging in the middle ... with more inside monologues rather than outward actions.

All in all, these two books were pretty enjoyable. I liked Benny, much more than Zeke. Funnily, in book #1, I also liked William much more than Rand. I guess their significant others are way more endearing than both Rand and Zeke ^_^.

Rounded down to 4.5 stars

So overall this was just as enjoyable as the first book. Really wish this could have been a double POV book because I REALLY wanted to know what was going on in Benny's head like...all the damn time.

I took off a half a star mostly because Zeke took awhile for me to warm up to completely. You get to understand completely why he acts the way he does by the end, and I understand him now and his actions, but going into this not knowing it just made Zeke really unlikable for me for a time. And his internal homophobia was the kind that did not make me sympathetic to him. But I get why he was the way he was, and once he started loosening up around Benny and opened up more, we got to see who he is under the wall he hides behind.

I also didn't care for the ex hanging around. I know it tied into the problems Zeke needed to get over, but I still didn't care for it anyway. It wasn't like he was in the story a crazy amount, but he popped up here and there to remind the reader that he's probbabllyy gonna try and screw things up for our main couple - and he did try. It left things rocky with Zeke and Benny for a bit, but thankfully they made up.

Aside from that niggle and Zeke's early behavior, I loved this. I loved the chemistry between Zeke and Benny (and the hot, HOT sex. Wowza ;)) and I loved the depth they had. I love whenever characters feel like people and not stereotypes with barely any personality. All the characters did, and it let me connect with them a lot easier.

Overall this was a lovely read, and I think it is definitely worth a read if you haven't read it yet :D

Whew! The sex in this one was smoking hot. And the story! Okay, I could have done without all the co-worker/ex-boyfriend drama because *yawn* unoriginal BUT I did love all the scenes where Zeke voiced his disbelief, his frustration, his anger at how his previously homophobic father is now all Ally-of-the Year but couldn't spare a word of kindness or acceptance toward any of the queer people Zeke could have used as mentors, or role-models while he was growing up. All he heard were vicious name-calling, snide remarks. Which kind of skewed his own perceptions of what it means to be gay, or not, since no one fits a pre-set mold and it affected how he relates to the others - how he saw anyone slightly effeminate or flamboyant as...well, that kind of gay. The lesser gay. So I'm super glad that got cleared up! (I don't think Benny would have spared him the scathing take-down had it continued.)

Of course George deserves redemption & forgiveness because he just didn't know any better. I don't like to use excuses but he really was a man of his time and his upbringing; having a gay son (and the object lessons Zeke's mom imparted with some seriously tough-love) gave him the opportunity to learn, to adapt, to change. And he did; he really made the effort to make up for his past mistakes. But I GET IT! I do...it's hard to see all that positivity being lavished on complete strangers when those heart-felt smiles, that loving attitude was nothing like what Zeke was exposed to for most of his life. It's not fair. It hurts. I'm SO very glad he actually voiced his feelings so that they could...well, not wipe the slate clean...but maybe build a new, better relationship? Yeah, that.

Also, I think Benny was adorable. And the narration for this was really good as well. Definitely gonna add the others in this series to my TBR!

(I might have eaten both a plate of lasagna AND a couple of bagels while listening to this. I couldn't help it; all of the food descriptions kept making me hella hangry.)

I don't even know why I waited so long to read it. I mean I already had read the first book of the series and liked so much, but then after reading the blurb of this second one, I didn't feel appealing to start to read right away. I mean, it was something I knew I would read sometime but I wasn't in hurry to it. I'm so glad the Bingo Challenge gave me the push to start this series again... Loved this story! :-D

I liked the first book so much, but this one it was even better. I loved Benny. He was just him, colorful, authentic, funny... I really adored him.
I had a little problem with Zeke, though. I liked him, but he was so self-centered sometimes that I just wanted to slap him on the face. Buuut, he learned... I love when the character personality is evolved in the story... About his father, I understood him, not that I agreed, but I understood and felt sympathy for him. Of course, the resentment and bitterness around it were just eating his life and it was no good.
Well, I really liked the two characters together and I was connected with them. Their friendship felt real and while the feelings were being developed I was cheering so much for them. :D
The plot was really good and the writing style was just something I loved. I already read other books by Lane Hayes and I really like the way she writes.
I definitely will read more titles by her.

This book is light, sweet and low-angst. I recommend! :)

P.S: Although I didn't want Zeke looking for revenge on his ex, I did want to see the fuckers- Tayler goes to hell. I wanted revenge for what he did in the end. Lol

I’ve read the first book of this new series from Lane Hayes and I honestly cannot recall what that story is about but I do remember George! What I really enjoyed about this book is how there was control in the characterization of the main characters esp Zeke. I thought at first that I was going to hate him so much that I would end up giving this book a low rating but lo and behold – there’s just so much to love about his very complex character. He and Benny have very much something in common and I think that is where they clicked. They’re so different with their personalities and the looks but their past is what made them bridge that gap which Zeke was so adamantly establishing at the beginning.

Benny is just a lovely muffin but I wished he wasn’t that kind and practical. I would’ve like a little retaliation from Zeke to his douche ex-boyfriend Taylor!!! I really do. But I guess that’s not gonna make sense in the totality of the story because whatever Zeke would do to Taylor would bounced back to his past involving George.

Let go… forgive and forget. ‘not that easy to be honest.

Rating: 5 perfect stars because this is arguably the author’s best work to date!
