Learned a lot on the soft skills required in the finance industry - definitely something that I’ll recommend to others that I work with!

This is a solid career advice book that provides some good foundations for a successful career. Runde’s first point is definitely one of his best: that working hard and being smart are not what get you ahead. That’s what got you here in the first place, not what will set you apart or distinguish you going forward.

I’ve read similar advice in plenty of other places too, but regardless you learn quickly that relationships are what will help your career the most. Quite rightly it’s thus what Runde spends most of his time on. Whether with bosses, colleagues, clients or subordinates, relationships are what drive business.

I’ve learned a lot of what Runde writes about already - often the hard way like he did - but it was still good to have some of those truisms reinforced since I don’t always put them into practice enough.

In particular, I liked the section around networking. There is some solid advice around client relationships and building them, in particular around being flexible and anticipating needs. Overall, there is nothing earth-shattering in terms of advice however. Anyone who’s been in business for a while has experienced a lot of what he references as important.

My biggest gripe was around his advice in dealing with your boss. A lot of what Runde assumes is that your boss will have your best interests in mind. I have had some bosses who do not fit that profile. In fact, I have yet to find a helpful book that deals with an antagonistic boss. Also, a lot of his advice was somewhat hokey in terms of its presentation (the three C’s of…; the three D’s of…) but I’m sure that was to simplify it and provide a tool to remember the advice as well.

He references numerous other business advice books which I’ve added to my reading list which was also helpful.

I’d recommend this book more for someone first starting his or her career even though Runde advises this book is for anyone. Nonetheless, it was a good reminder of what’s important even if the book didn’t teach me that many new things to consider.

Easy to listen to this on Audible as the guidance is straightforward. If you are a young professional then this will be very helpful. If you are an experienced professional, then this will serve as a reminder to certain actions you should do in your profession. One of the main points that resonated with me was the attention to detail that can make a difference to how you are perceived. There is always a point of discussion of how much detail do you emphasis when producing any piece of work.

More applicable to be people in finance or investment but there was definitely some good information here. I think the book recommendations and practical tips at the end of the book were the most useful for anyone in business or who wants to learn more about communicating more effectively in general

Excellent book, in this book the author, explains in a very simple and tangible way how to use Emotional Intelligence for career success. it is a book for everyone at any level of work. The author's point in which he insists is that while getting a job is difficult and you have to put effort to get it, that is not the end and when you get a job the difficult part just starts, you have to be smart and make proper moves to be successful and advance in your job.

The author likes to make everything in 3 steps, 3Ps, 3Cs, 3Ds and there are much more in the book. It talks from how to make a trust-based client relationship to how to be an effective leader, he talks about the culture of work and controlling your relationship with people effectively. He also gives solid examples of his own career.
At the end of the book, the author recommends 10 books to read and some simple points to consider which can make a big difference for you.

I recommend this book to everyone especially to who is going to change the job very soon.

I thought the book was okay. I wasn't expecting it to be so focused on business, sales, and/or consulting. I was hoping for a more board, inclusive approach. I love quotes, and I thought Mr. Runde did a great job inserting very applicable ones to make his point(s).

Absolute gem of a book and must read for anyone just starting out in his/her professional services career. Packed full of practical, actionable and insightful advice.

- How to produce great work.
- How to network.
- How to be commercial (bring more sales).
- How to manage clients.
- How to lead and manage.

It is honest advice and I absolutely loved the practical tips at the end of the book.

- Start meetings at a precise time (10:15am rather than 10:00am) to improve attendance.
- Use "postpone" rather than "cancel".
- Ask colleagues to introduce themselves.
- Propose solutions along with every critique.
- Reiterate your name to prevent awkward situations ("Hi, I'm so-and-so. It's great to see you again.")
- Return a missed call with "I'm sorry I missed your call".
- Dedicate the effort of creating the first draft!

Awesome book!
