Waterproof kicks off with action that had me racing through the pages.
Anyone who bucked the system was considered a deserter and dealt with “appropriately.”
Pollution, population overcrowding, terrorists destroying the desalinization plants, greed, nuclear holocaust, disease, martial law, the draft – once in, never out – who will survive?
The groups dynamic changes as the characters come and go, whether by choice or death. I do wonder who will be left standing.
The horror is unbelievably grotesque. The mad scientists are on the loose.
This is one of those stories that will give you food for thought. In an apocalypse, who will survive? Is it the haves or have nots? Is it the strongest or the smartest? Is the sacrifice of the many for the survival of the few the rule of thumb? How do people twist their minds into thinking heinous acts are acceptable? Will there be any humanity left on the planet?
How far would you go to save the one you love?
Science fiction meets horror and it ain’t pretty.
The writing was so detailed I could see it, feel it, and it gave me shivers. The characters are well developed and become more complex as they grow and learn to survive and love in a new world.
I am very curious to see where this ends, to find out how many of their makeshift family will survive.
I do love a happy ever after, but we will have to wait and see. Waterproof has no cliffhanger, but it does make me eager to read the next book in the series, Watermarked.

SUMMARY (55 words or less) This book really captured my attention from the first page. I quickly realized that this author had no trouble taking out characters, so I held onto hope my favs would survive. The twist were interesting. I couldn’t predict them all.

**I received a digital copy of this book from Xpresso Book Tours as a part of the blog tour in exchange for an honest review.**
Waterproof starts after 5 years after the incidents that took place in the first book. Zach and Vivienne are constantly on the run and they still live with the deserters. Water has been totally wiped out and the remaining water bodies have been contaminated to such an extent that they can't be purified. All of them have to fight and struggle to get water from the government trucks or other places. Not only this, they have to fight other deserters for survival as well. But when Vivienne and a few others are captured, the remaining of them set out to rescue them from the factory and when they learn about the shocking truth, it will change their lives forever.
I enjoyed the plot. Five years have passed, their lives have been quite altered. Zach and Vivienne have both lost their parents and they are still struggling to live this kind of life. They are constantly fighting for survival. I enjoyed the action here as well. Finally they admitted that they feel something for each other, more than friends. I did like their romance but something felt missing. The truth about what happens in the factory also comes out, I thought I was going to be shocked by the revelation, and the truth was indeed horrifying but I didn't feel that much shocked by it. I think I wanted it to enfold in a more dramatic way which didn't happen.
The characters have evolved in this book. They were still the same people but they were more mature and skilled fighters. I loved Zach and Vivienne and I liked their banters and friendship. I also liked the other characters as well such as Hunter, Max and Sasha. All of them formed quite a bit of strange but a strong family.
Overall, I throughly enjoyed reading Waterproof. The plot was nice and the characters were still great. I enjoyed the romance but felt something was missing and also I wanted the plot twist to be more dramatic. But other than that I enjoyed everything. The writing was smooth, I finished this book in one sitting as well. And the pace was fast throughout the book. It ended in a cliffhanger so it left us hanging in suspense. I definitely want to read the book 3 and see what what happens next.
I would like to thank the author for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book. Doing so does not sway my judgment in any way.
Going into this book, I was a little skeptical. The overly bad-ass heroine and the wannabe bad-ass hero together trying to make it through hell without getting killed. There was even a point that I stopped reading and went to the prequel to get some more info. I came back, and low and behold, this book really took off from there on. The chemistry that wasn't there at the beginning seemed to suddenly click and the story itself took us from the savaged humdrum of post-apocalyptic life to something more.
Vee is pretty bad ass, but her character isn't one of those sissy girls that suddenly becomes that way, but she seems to have always had a bit of a tough side to her and knows how to stand her ground. Zach has been wanting to reach out further to her, in a personal way, but was unsure of how to go about it. I mean, they're not thinking about prom night anymore but instead knowing every step they take can make or break their small band of deserters.
The author has come up with an ingenious and well thought out crisis. The world takes water for granted and we know we can live so many days without food, but not without water. Just the other day I was thinking about the water cycle and wondering just how, with all the human consumption and with all the other things we use water in and for, how does the cycle even come close to coming full circle?
The beginning of the book is a little, excuse the pun, dry, but come about 25% into the book and you start learning more about the group they are in and how they start to understand that the attraction they are feeling is mutual. Unlike some dystopia books, where they fight it off because life is so crappy, they actually embrace it and it's great seeing love blossom in a world where it would be so easy to shut it out.
There is action, adventure, loss, hope, romance, deception and triumphs all mixed into this book. Anyone who likes the dystopian genre would find this a great read and happily add it to their collection. I do recommend it for those ages 16+ due to some situations in the story itself.
From the very beginning, I felt transported into a "Mad Max world." However, rather than roaming the dusty roads in search of precious drops of gasoline, Garr's characters are in need of life-giving water. A bullet-chase and sword-swinging stand-off ends in decapitation and maiming within the first few pages. The reader instantly goes, "whoa."
As would be expected, Garr's characters are hardened by life on the run and the lack of creature-comforts of the modern world. However distrustful of strangers, they bond closely together as a unit, as would certainly happen when your life depends on the one sleeping next to you every night to keep the monsters at bay.
What I loved about this book was the romantic bond between Vivienne and Zach, and their unwavering loyalty which guided the plot in a heroic manner. The stakes are high for them and they feel that way throughout the story. In other words, their emotions definitely transfer to the reader. I was also riveted to the complication of a would-be rival in the mercenary, Riley. Another thing I loved was that I didn't always know what was going to happen when I turned the page. Garr kept me guessing . . . and turning the page.
My only complaints, if you can call them that, were that sometimes I felt lost in certain action sequences. I might have to reread a line or two to get my bearings. And while I thought the world intriguing and believable, I wanted to see nifty names for the "government" and such. I'm one of those readers who reads a name like "Hogwarts" and goes "oooooo, cool name." (I was also a little freaked out with the cliffhanger at the end, but I think that might be a plus rather than a minus, since that means Garr will definitely have me anticipating and reading the sequel.) I know. My complaints are silly and minor, but that was the only thing keeping me from rating Waterproof higher than 3.5 stars. Having said that, if you like romance and dystopian, this is a must-read!
So, looking for sword-slinging battles, hot romance, dark secrets, and daring escapes? BUY WATERPROOF!
Can I just say that Amber Garr totally rocked my socks off with this book. Holy cow I really do not read dystopian books but this one totally blew me away and I was glad I read it. First I have to say that this cover is off the hook! I love it so much and I am so grateful to be a part of this tour. Who would have thought someone could write a book about water? I mean crap after reading it I was thinking holy crap imagine if we lost everything even the water we need to survive and had to rely on the government to give us our water and food. Man that would just straight out suck monkey balls!
Zach and Vivienne have lived as deserters and they have to do what they have to do to survive. There is a shortage of food and water and places to live but they do what they have to. They have learned to trust one another and rely on one another. Then tragedy strikes them and there world is turned upside down and what they thought was true may not be true. But at the end of the day they are going to have to figure it out because they need to survive and stay far away from the government as they can.
With their friends by their side Zach and Vivienne will discover secrets that will rock the core of their beliefs. Along with their friends they will have to decide who to trust and who stay away from and just maybe who they were told was bad just might not be bad at all. This is such a great story that had me on the edge of my seat I could not wait to read the ending and I so wanted to check out the ending but I was a good girl and read it through without peeking. So lets see if you can do that to and go out and read this kick arse story!
I loved the development of this story. I dont know who I like more Riley or Zach. I love Vee she is everything I am not. I couldnt hurt a fly but she is a warrior. There were some explicit sexual scenes so I would not recommend for young teens. The end was such a cliffhanger I cant wait for the next book in this series.
I really enjoyed this story, and I didn't listen/read to the first book. I was still able to follow along with what was going on. I think the 1st book would of added to this story, but I'm not sorry I listened to this first. I am super excited to read/listen to the third when it comes out.
I enjoyed the love story that developed between the characters as well as the drama that unfolds when they end up with the government.
LONG STORY SHORT.. I want this book to be made into a movie, and I want Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play Zach while I play Vee.
Water...every drop is precious. Imagine living in a world where a bottle of pure water is more precious than a human life. Nuclear war has ravaged the planet to the point where rain stings, animals have died off, plants have died off, and people fight a government that wants to round up all "deserters" to make them work in the factory. But that work is not quite what it seems....
Garr is a masterful writer. She here put together a work that is stark, gripping, exciting in a macabre way, and will make readers shudder at the plausibility of the world presented. Stunning emotion, breath-taking action, heartbreaking scenes...this book is amazingly well done. Let's just say it had me dwelling more than a little bit on a post-nuclear war plan...
On a scale of 1 to 5, I give this book a 4.
LONG STORY... The Good Heart thumping. Riveting. Terrifying. All these words and more describe Waterproof by Amber Garr. Imagine you live in a world that has been decimated by nuclear war, famine, and people struggling against one another in a desperate struggle to survive. Survive just one more day, so that you just might survive the next, and so on.
Zach and Vee were high schoolers until the nukes rained down. Now they are deserters, people who have refused to acquiesce to the governmental draft to serve two years doing hard labor in the "factories". No one knows for sure what happens in the factories. All they know is that those who go in never come out. They don't want to go in.
They are also not sure how they feel about one another, and don't figure this out until it is very nearly too late....or is it?
Waterproof is a book that broke my heart, made me want to puke, made me pump my fist in exhilaration, and shudder....all in the same chapter. Well-written settings that made me feel as though I was part of the action pulled me into the scenes. A riveting fast-paced plot grabbed me by the seat of the pants until I did not want to quit reading. Let's just say I stayed glued to this book for a bit and lost more than a little sleep because I had to know what was going to happen.
I'm not kidding about wanting this to be a screenplay: director = Joss Whedon. Zach = Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Vivienne = me (what, I've done some screen acting!). Yes it is a dystopian future in a media world where those are becoming more popular, but this one has a ring to it that is just plain terrifying: I could see it happening.
Okay, maybe not this exact scenario of course (somehow I feel like the science is a little off in the end), but something eerily similar. It is easy to sit back and say that we'd never kill anyone, but what if we were in a post-nuclear existence where all water in rivers/oceans/rain was contaminated with nuclear fallout and the only pure water was that which was pure and bottled before the nukes fell? Can you honestly tell me you wouldn't kill another for such a precious commodity?
It terrifies me to think just how plausible this freaky future may be.
Anyways, this book is haunting. The characters are very real, have their own distinct voices (this is very important to me), and made me want to hug and slap them at the appropriate moments. Something just isn't right about some of them, and it makes me want to read the next one.
Oh yeah, this clearly is not a stand-alone book. It kind of cliffhangs. *&!@#$
Also, it is told in a way that bounces back and forth between Zach and Vee's viewpoints. Garr is really good at this - it is never confusing who is speaking. I rather liked being able to crawl inside each of their heads and get a fairly good idea of what was going on at any given time by seeing it though two perspectives. After Zach and Vee are separated (oh, c'mon...I'm not spoiling to much - you know they get separated if you watch the book trailer), we get to see what is happening on both sides of the story. I love this!
This is kind of Hunger Games meets "Book of Eli" meets "Legion". Dystopian. Love. Water. Fight.
The Bugly (bad/ugly) Okay, you might have noticed this section has been remarkably short in most of my recent reviews. I'm not going soft, I swear - the books I've been reading lately just haven't given me much to complain about. The same is true here.
There are two things that bugged me:
1) I HATE cliff hanger endings. I'll give that this one was done fairly well, but I was more than a little annoyed when my Kindle said "99% complete" and I KNEW the story wasn't anywhere close to finishing.
2) The wonky science here bothered me - if an entire land is plagued by radioactive fall out and such, wouldn't the people have radiation poisoning of some sort? Also, I'm sure the animals mentioned would take MUCH longer to stop showing signs of radiation poisoning and still be unsafe to eat (if the species even survived in the first place). The people here didn't seem to, and this did bother me. A certain medical thing near the end bugged me a bit to, simply because I think it was made up....but so long as it remains consistent throughout the story I will let it go. :P
READ THIS BOOK....AND THEN DO EVERYTHING IN YOUR POWER TO HELP HUMANITY AVOID SUCH AN AWFUL FATE.
I do love a good post - apocalyptic novel and this one is both brilliantly written and narrated. This continued the story and they are now all in the factory/city. That brought its own unique story line - the ending was brilliant. Cannot wait for part 3.
I was given a free copy by the author but this is no way influenced my review.
Wasn’t expecting this story! This is one of those gems that warm you, like finding a great old movie on TV when the weather is raging outside. In short, I liked it. I liked it a lot.
The story hits its pace right from the first page. Its five years after the wars have raged, and there is little to no water, but Zach has found some. Has stolen some, and is now running for his life with a gang of Mad Max type crazy’s after him.
He’s in a world of hurt until Vivienne (Vee) comes to his aid. Oh sweet, I love my heroine’s feisty, ballsy and not afraid to fight. She is something else, Katniss Everdeen with a sword! The opening chapters were pretty violent and graphic and I was settled in for the long haul. It was shocking, graphic and downright awesome.
So Zach had stolen the water. Sasha, the leader of their small group of deserters was not happy, not happy at all. He’d put them all in danger. But Zach had found more than just a few bottles, he’d found a tank and he wanted to go back for it.
As a result of his actions there were consequences, from them (and boy the action was fast, heartbreaking) it led to a series of unfortunate events. Believing they had found a little piece of heaven in this cruel, barren world, the group settle and relax for a few hours. It was also a place where Zach and Vee’s love blossomed deeper….but boy was that a bad decision.
What I loved the most about this story was, for one the character’s Amber wrote were easy to like, easy to relate too and very real. I also liked she had no problem killing off her characters….we are in a dystopian world where it’s dog eat dog. This was definitely the hounds killing each other, I LOVED IT. I also loved the fact the women were no bodice ripping weak females unable to look after themselves.
One wrong look their way could have you missing your head. Sweet! What I felt could’ve been a little sharper was to have the rescue of Max explained more, more of Riley and his background with his step father, and how his step father knew of the plan (I don’t want to say too much because that would be way too much spoilers)
Once Vee, Max and Hunter were taken to Oasis One by the mercenary Riley & the subsequent rescue mission under way I just knew the action was going to get better. This part of the book did slow a little to give a little insight into the life and ways of the city, what I liked about this was it all seemed to have a sinister under tone. Everything seemed to “perfect”, too good to be true and with each chapter I was expecting for the proverbial crap to hit the fan.
Riley, I’m undecided about him, he seemed a little too sweet, a little too caring and totally has huge stalker tendencies. I’m hoping we get more of his story in the next book.
Oh boy, Oh boy, I did not see the end coming. I was taken by complete surprise at that one :) Awesome job, so glad there will be more because with the ending as it was I NEED to know what the hell is going on….Great story, great plot and beautiful execution.

I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review and to help her celebrate the release day, I am a little late but I still wanted to mention that is was released sept. 24 and you should get it asap. The idea behind this story is something I have definitely thought about, and I think the author did a great job of making it exciting, entertaining, heartwarming and believable. The world has become a scary place were survival of the fittest has taken over but this small group of characters have found each other and made their own family. I can't totally explain why but I found myself feeling very connected to these characters and not just Zach and Vivienne but all of them. Sasha strong and maternal (although I don't think she would admit it), Max the strong silent co leader, Jackson the easy going buddy always willing to fight to protect his friends, Trevor the annoying but lovable guy, and Hunter melted my heart I was very glad he had a great group looking out for him. I wanted to be Vivienne so bad and not just because she is a kick ass fighter with a strong will, but mostly cause she got to be around Zach who I have seriously fallen in love with, he is protective of his loved ones and determined to do anything for his loved ones, especially Vivienne which brings me back to wanting to be her lol, and call me morbid if you will but a few of my favorite quotes by him were: "The signature feel of flesh parting around my blade sent a roll of satisfaction through me that I never would've believed I'd been Capable of" "Tomorrow would be time for revenge" I found them to be strong and hot proving he knows how to take care of himself and the ones around him, also brings me to say that the writing in this book was beautifully done and I can't wait to read more books by Amber Garr and I really really really hope that includes a second book to this one. Now I read a lot of young adult books and they don't usually contain sex scenes and that doesn't bother me since I am not a big fan I find them to be repetitive and a bit unnecessary, implied sex works just fine for me lol, but this book contained a sex scene so hot, passionate, and well written that I seriously hope my next sexual encounter is as beautiful as this was, even the quick elevator love was cute and hot at the same time. Now I don't want to give away the big secret but when they get to the compound, don't believe everything you read, Vivienne was right it's to good to be true. So much crazy unexpected stuff happens that Zach took the words right out of my mouth when he said: "I can't wrap my brain around this." . Also I was never sure about Riley and after that absolutely INSANE ending I still don't know how to feel so again I say there had better be a book 2. I think dystopian fans would enjoy this book so if you like that genre then pick this one up, it is a beautifully written adventure of love, survival and family so it cause I LOVED it and I think lots of others will too.
Waterproof is another one of those rare indie gems that bring something a little new to the table and make you excited for the next book. It’s not just another dystopian with some rehashed horrible government and one person trying to make a change. It’s a dystopian with real characters who are fighting to survive for themselves, not because they have a high calling. Not to mention it has some new ideas.
The story is told in dual POVs and while I normally don’t like novels that switch back and forth I did appreciate it with this one. Not only do we get the extra insight into each character we also get to see two separate stories once the characters have split up. I love having that added anxiety of knowing something a character doesn’t. Over all the story is about surviving in a world where drinking water is hard to come by and people are willing to do anything to get it. I know of another book that deals with water like this but I haven’t read it, so this is fresh and I really enjoyed the newness of the idea. Especially once other plans are revealed later in the book. I’ll admit to reading it in shock and then declaring the idea stupid, but the more I read the more I enjoyed the different quality to the idea.
As for our characters we have a hand full but Zach and Vivianne (Vee) are the main focus. Their relationship plays a huge part in this and it’s honestly a good thing. They already have a set relationship before the book starts and they have the history together, so it doesn’t feel rushed and they feel comfortable. I was a little under prepared for the sexy times though because I mislabeled the book when I got it and thought it was YA, oops. I really liked Zach and Vee, they both felt real and realistically hardened to certain aspects of their life. They’re only in their twenties and when crap hit the fan they were younger than that, so it’s logical that certain things are easier for them. Zach has the realistic mind of a male and his POV doesn’t shy away from the more personal aspects of it. In fact this book doesn’t really shy away from anything and I appreciated the blatant humanity of all of it, sometimes I just get tired of reading cut and dry books. There are also other great characters like Hunter, Sasha and Trevor that I really enjoyed, but would have really liked to see more from them. They are great side characters and it’s clear they have their own personalities but I would have liked to get to know them better before things were kicked into high gear. Also there are characters called Sam and Dean…I have no idea if this was intentional but I kind of squealed a bit and immediately pictured them as the Sam and Dean from Supernatural. In fact I have no idea what they were supposed to look like.
Overall I found Waterproof to be a rather quick and enjoyable read that really pulled me in from page one and made me want more. Especially with the ending, cliffhanger alert…It’s a interesting story with a new idea and a great flow.
So I was looking forward to an adult post apocalyptic/dystopian type romance. I found one in Waterproof. This book was jam packed with suspense, action and freaking frustrating romance. Water, something that we take for granted but something so vital is like the greatest commodity and Viv and Zach along with some pretty amazing characters are fighting for their lives. Viv is a fighter and Zach doesn't try to lead Viv ..they stand right beside each other. The romance was beautiful.
Best friend to lovers but, of course in this type of story you know it's gonna be a painful road to any kind of happiness. I did enjoy it though because I knew going in these aren't rainbows and jelly beans types of reads. I found that the love story though really was tragically beautiful and I loved the scenes between Viv and Zach.
“I love you,”
I said between breaths and kisses. Zach’s hands pulled through my hair, rough enough to yank me back, but gentle enough for me to know this was part of the game. “I’ve wanted this to happen for so long,” he said.
So many emotional moments and a whole lot of suspense kept this story entertaining and at the same time very frustrating. I wanted to scream so many times but I kept flipping pages. I knew by 80% there was no way we were going to get a HEA or even an HFN. I sighed...but I still was hopeful.
But alas, the book gods were not listening. I am accepting it now but I still felt like this for a little while
Then I got over it. I know thse two belong together and I'm actually pretty excited to see them kick some more ass. Thanks Amber for keeping me on the edge of my seat and all the nail biting and frayed nerves.
When the author approached me and asked me to take part in the blog tour and review Waterproof I jumped at the chance. It sounded awesome! Well I'm so glad I did!!
Waterproof is told from both Zach and Vees POV. They are part of a group of deserters who are trying to survive in a world where water is scarce. They struggle to find any water and what they do find they usually have to steal. The first chapter of Waterproof jumps right into the action and we see Zach running for his life after stealing some water from other deserters. He escapes with a little bit of water but draws the deserters to their camp. They have to move camp and on their travels finds an abandoned place. They set up base but find themselves surrounded by mercenaries. Vee, Hunter and Max are captured and taken to the one place they tried to avoid in the first place, the factory. They have all heard the rumors about the place, that anyone who goes there doesn't come back. What Vee finds out there shocks her to the core! Meanwhile Zach has to pose as a mercenary to gain access to the factory and try and save his friends.
I really enjoyed Waterproof. It was action packed and hooked me from the start. The first chapter sees Zach running for his life with a few precious bottles of water. This sets the tone for the entire book and not once was there a dull moment. I loved Zach and Vee. Zach is so snarky and brave but also so foolish with his life at times. He tends to act first and think later. He draws the other deserters to the camp and has to deal with the consequences. I really liked Vee as well. She is kick ass, she carries and isn't afraid to use a sword!!! She does all she can for the group and will protect them with her life. She has known Zach since they were small and I loved how we saw their friendship progress. I loved how even though this book is serious, we still had a few "snigger" moments! I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through but still managed a few laughs. For example ~ (This is from an ARC so is subject to change)
"A short, muscular man stepped out of the woods and blocked our path. His straggly hair and growing beard made him look like a dwarf. The stench put him more on par with a pile of manure."
Amber Garr has created a bleak and desolate world where water is scarce and people will do anything for it. It's a world that sucked me in and had me rooting for Zach and Vee. I loved it!! One thing I have to say though is O!M!G!!!! THAT ending!!!! When I read the ending I was like NOOOOOO, it cant end like that. Its a major cliffhanger and I so need book 2 like right now to see what happens!!!
Water. Wars were fought and lost over it. People died. Billions of humans perished in the days leading up to the end. And now I risked my life for a mere eight liters because we'd used the last natural drop of clean water on the planet five years ago. ***
Vee and Zach, along with a mismatch crew, are just trying to survive. Water is scarce and the government is looking for those who are hiding out. They want to use them to make water in the factories; the scary thing is you never leave once you get caught. So Vee and Zach must do what they can to stay alive and outrun the mercenaries. But when some of them get caught, the rumors they've heard might not be true. Maybe there is a world out there for them to live comfortably in and in peace. Or maybe there is something sinister lurking behind the factory's closed doors.
Books about the end of the world, or what seems like the end of the world to the characters involved, is just my cup of tea. Or glass of water? Ha! I couldn't stop myself. Get it? Since they have no fresh water anymore? Oh good grief. Moving on. Seriously though, these types of books get my mind turning and wondering. They make me think of the things I could live without or ways I would outwit those out to cause harm. And when a book gets a reader so involved, well, that is just fine by me. I would rather be so engrossed in a book, than to just have something to read and not get anything out of it.
As for the characters...I adored them. Vee is a fighter and a don't-take-crap kind of gal. But she also has feelings for Zach and is about to let him in on those feels. Zach is a smart mouth punk at times, but he shares the same feelings as Vee. Unfortunately their relationship is short lived as they are caught by some hot headed mercenaries. Not entirely sure how I feel for Riley though. He is one that I will have to keep reading on to try and figure out. Maybe, just maybe, he will redeem himself as the series continues.
I wasn't sure if this was going to be a series or not as I started it, but when the end came and proved that it was, I was happy. I realized as I got to that crazy ending I wanted more. I wanted more of the story, more of the characters. And now I have to impatiently wait for more to come. But can you imagine a world without fresh water? I know I can't. And it is rather scary to imagine.
Thank you, Garr, for asking me to help review another fabulous book you have created. I love this world just as much as your Syrenka one. And I look forward to what you have planned for these guys. Definitely a must read that will keep readers on their toes the whole book!
I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All views expressed here are my own.
This book had a very interesting set up. A world where there wasn't enough water for everyone is rather unfathomable. At the same time, it is very unique and felt realistic. I mean, wars will cause some sort of fallout. Many books merely talk about the fallout to the environment, but not about the water. While I did enjoy the concept and world, I must say Waterproof didn't captivate as much as I expected it to.
Perhaps it was the characters that I did not like that much. I must say though, they were realistic because of how they reacted to situations. Yet, they felt a little one dimensional and as a reader, I was never interested in understanding more about them. Maybe I didn't really enjoy being in Zach's and Vivienne's heads. I mean, I just never felt they acted their age. I do actually like the supporting characters a little bit more though, especially Jackson (ahhh now that's one guy I like) and Sasha.
But to be honest, I hated the romance. I just couldn't get into it. And while reading, I felt there was a whole book prior to this that I had missed out. I was thrown into the world, with references to history which weren't clearly explained. It kinda did detract from the enjoyment of the book. I would have appreciated a short prequel, honestly.
I did really enjoy being thrown into action from the start though, it captured my attention and drew me in. And I really liked that there wasn't unnecessary description and words to fill up the space. It was to the point, which brought across the story in a clear method that I did like.
One thing I really enjoyed about the book was the whole concept. It was well laid out and even if the history was a little sketchy, I am actually very curious to see how the story works out. And yeah, I was rather drawn in by the story towards the end of the book, when everything started falling into place and making sense.
Some parts did feel a little bit unrealistic, like the whole secret of the factories. I won't go into that because I think that was actually a major plot line of the story. But albeit a little unrealistic, the concept was interesting.
Still, Waterproof was rather disappointing all in all. I didn't enjoy the fact that there was hardly any character development. On the other hand, I do think the sequel can be better. So I do hope that in future books, if she decides to write more books, I would enjoy it more! I really do like the premise of the books, and I sincerely would not want it to stop here.
I wasn't aware when I started Waterproof by Amber Garr that it was a book 2. It didn't matter. There was enough information to be read as a stand alone, a very good one. Garr creates a truly believable dystopian world, full of angst, mystery and danger. I enjoyed these characters, and would also have made some of the same choices.
Waterproof is a post-apocalyptic story where clean water is very hard to find. Deserters are people that refuse to work in factories so they are constantly on the run, surviving as best as they can. I really loved the concept of this book about there not being enough water for everyone. It is a very unique idea and I haven't read another book like it. This story was very action-packed and I was immediately pulled into the story from the very beginning.
Vee and Zach are the main characters of this story. They have been best friends for a very long time. Inseparable. I was glad that the story switched up POVs between those two. It was very nice to get inside both of their heads to understand their feelings and who they are. Even though the POVs switched I still couldn't connect all that much with Zach and Vee. They just didn't grow at all by the end of the story. Vee and Zach felt one dimensional to me, no depth to them at all. They didn't feel real to me at especially the romance between them. I understand that they had a crush on each other for a long time, but it still felt rushed to me. I did enjoy the fact that Vee was a kick-butt character instead of the usual damsel in distress. I love the fact that she wields a sword. I loved all the secondary characters with the exception of Riley. I don't know how I feel about him yet. Something was off with him, weird. Love Sasha, Max, Jackson and Hunter.
As I was reading, I was waiting on something important to happen. The suspense was killing me. Got to the end of the book and nothing. Nothing big happened at all. There was no wow factor. The whole story had to do with Vee in the factory and how Zach was going to get her out. I just wished there was more to this story. More that happened in this story, because it was such a great concept.
The ending was predictable, but the cliffhanger definitely left me wanting more. I really did enjoy the originality of the story. I can't wait to see what happens in the sequel.
I fell in love with the cover of this book first something about her eyes drew me in. I then read the blurb and I was hooked. I had to know more I had to learn about those blue eyes and why this story had totally sucked me in. As I began to read I am introduced to Vivienne (Vee) and Zach. They have been together for quite awhile and play off of one another very well. To be honest the concept of this story scares the living daylights out of me has it is a very realistic possibility in our world. Not a subject that I want to think of as a reality. This is part of what had me hooked about Waterproof is that it deals with a very real problem that could someday be a reality. Kind of makes you think. I was beginning to get completely engrossed into the story. The group of deserters as they are called is attacked leaving the remaining few to try and get them out of the governments factory before it's to late! Vee and Zack are part of the deserters and they do have a history together and somewhere between the battling and surviving they fall in love. Sometimes love finds us in the worst possible of times. It doesn't matter to them they are bound to make it work for them. As they work to rescue the others and avoid being caught themselves. Only to be left wondering who to trust. They only ever relied on each other and now their lives are turned completely upside down, tattered and torn at the seems with the most critical decisions facing them trust the wrong person and it all is over. Waterproof is told from two POV's and at first had me confused but I figured t out fairly quick and in the end thought it was great being able to know more than one person's thoughts on the matter and ii personally thought it made for a better story. Amber Garr did an excellent job with this story her writing was so detailed and thought provoking leaving me wondering if this water scare become a very true reality for us someday. I enjoyed reading Waterproof and would recommend it to anyone!
2.5 stars. I like the background and the world. You learn more about the world as you go further through the book. The world has gone to crap, basically, and the few remaining people either "desert" the cities and scrounge for water (which doesn't exist anymore) in the wild or are forced to work in factories that create water for the people in the cities. Then we find out what the factories are really doing. Which is an interesting premise that I thought was new (new to me anyway).
The characters were ok. Most were at least kind of relatable. But I would have liked to learn more. We hear just enough to get kind of interested, then we don't really get to know them. I did find the main characters a bit odd as we have no real backstory on them. Other than that they have been friends forever and how they met, that is. I mean, their families moved to West Virginia to live off grid when they were still in high school. But how did they learn to be such amazing fighters. From what I understand their parents worked "regular" jobs. They weren't exactly survivalists. We learn nothing about how they moved off grid with no training. How they taught their daughter to wield a sword like a ninja. How they learned to live off the land. And then, how they are dead. Where are they now? But maybe we get into that in future books. I did think the factory and City were interesting and look more to the building of that world.
Finally, I throw this in as a warning. There are a couple of graphic sex scenes. They aren't bad (i.e. forced in any way)...I just don't care to read about it. If I did, I would pick up Fifty Shades or any Harlequin Romance book - not an action dystopian fiction. I always think it's a little out of place, particularly the second scene. The first made sense.
(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to author Amber Garr.) After a nuclear war, clean water is as valuable as gold, and for Zack and Vivienne, and the people they live with, getting it is difficult.
In a society where everyone is forced to serve 2 years of their lives serving in the ‘factories’, Zack and Vivienne are deserters – living on the run, and refusing to serve their time. How long can Zack and Vivienne stay on the run? And what really goes on in the factories?
This was an interesting dystopian story, with some okay science-based ideas.
Zack and Vivienne were both okay characters, and Vivienne seemed quite capable of looking after herself. I was a bit surprised by the steamy romance between these two, as it wasn’t quite what I was expecting, but this did seem to work.
The storyline was okay, although the further we got into the story and the more science stuff came into it, the less sure I began to feel about certain aspects of the storyline in respect to the validity of the science. It’s difficult to go into this without dropping spoilers, and people who haven’t studied biology/chemistry/biochemistry at degree level would be very unlikely to pick this up, but in my opinion certain aspects of the science just had big holes in the basic theories, and while this isn’t meant to be a book about the science, this just made the book fall a little flat for me. The rest of the story was okay, and there were a few interesting developments as it went along. The ending was also okay, but was a bit of a cliff-hanger, and I’m not sure when the next book in the series will be available. Overall; an okay dystopian, but the science felt a little off. 6.5 out of 10.
First i would like to thank the author who provided me a copy to review.
Waterproof is a NA dystopian genre, which is still rare, and in this dystopian world Amber Garr created, the water is scarce. The novel point of view itself is from two main characters, Vee and Zach. And yes, they're lovers. They also has a group of survivors that try to run from the government who put all people above 18 to work in a factory.
For the character, i always like a bad ass chick like Vee, but i hoped that character has more depth. Even tho a girl like Vee is my favorite, i kinda struggle to relate myself to her. As for the romance side, yes the chemistry is quite strong, but it could be better. For me its like two childhood friend, suddenly fall in love and decided they right for each other. I wouldn't mind that, but if there more complicated things to start a relationship it'll feel more real.
I like the writing style though, there are a lot of actions in this book, but it also make the plot feel a little slow at first. But i loved how the author explain the background story on how it all first happening, its great to make the readers understand what really happening.
Other than that honestly i kinda disturbed by how the book (chapter 1) begin. Suddenly there are bam bam bam actions right ahead and a lot of bloods, yes, its not boring, but it also confusing, maybe its me, but i prefer a subtle and comforting chapter 1 to make a foundation of the story. But i really appreciate the effort to make it not boring, i used to write too and for me, its a tough task to pick a starter chapter for the story.
But hey, overall i enjoy me read and loved the "steamy stuffs" (not suitable for reader under 18, please) and this book is a great addition for NA Dystopian genre.
The concept of Waterproof really piqued my interest. What would we do without water? Living in Australia with water restrictions and especially now that we are coming up to the hot summer months, we really do have to be strict with our water usages: limit our shower time, only water the garden at certain appointed times during the week (limitation guided by councils), etc. Hence, this is an issue that is always on the forefront of Australian concerns.
The opening of the book was explosive and I immediately found the 2 MC, Zach & Viviene, to be endearing. Viviene is magnificently bad-ass –a sword wielding one, and is absolutely protective of Zach. (can’t get any hotter than that!) Zach isn’t completely helpless but the way he admired Viviene’s ‘bad-ness’ and the way he interacted with her warms my heart. The relationship between them was like a beacon of light, pure & innocent, in a darkly sinister world and it was a great foil / contrast in such a hopeless situation.
The science part of the book, I thought, could be a bit over the top (and at times, it just went over my head) that I was really sceptical about it. Although, Amber is the scientist here whilst if I see / hear science, I’d run the opposite direction, so I suppose, it’s got its potential for possibility.
I find that things are never what it seems when it comes to Amber Garr’s books. With Waterproof, every time I thought we’re heading in the right direction, we were off track and again and again until it ended with a cliffhanger! I can’t wait for the next instalment for this dark tale.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I started this book. An anti-Waterworld? Some Mad Max? If I had to toss out some pop culture references to describe it I’d say It’s a bit Steel Dawn, Red Dawn, and V. OK V might be a little bit of a stretch but it’s what came to mind. You’ll see why when you read it. But no Aliens that I know anyway!
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, it has some great characters including Zach and Vivienne our main characters with wonderful chemistry between them. The pacing is excellent with the point of view switching between our two main characters in a way that just keeps things flowing smoothly along. So much so in fact, I thought I was only around half way through the book when I was viciously blindsided by a cliffhanger ending! The setting and atmosphere do a great job of sucking you in with some science tossed in for good measure while remaining plausible enough to not require a huge suspension of disbelief.
For the record, I have no issues with cliffhangers as a rule. But I was engrossed in the book and didn’t notice I was at the end, went to continue to the next chapter and *WHAM*
I’m very happy to have found a new to me author & I can’t wait for the next book so I can find out what happens!
I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review. I loved this synopsis for this book! I love dystopian sand Waterproof delivered. I would definitely say that this novel is NA because it did have some sexy scenes that I did quite enjoy reading haha. The only thing that sucked was this book ended much too quickly. I want/ need to know what is going to happen ASAP! I really liked that this book was written from two different POV's, it really added to the story and it was done flawlessly. I really liked both Vee and Zach. I loved that their romance had been blossoming since they had been quite young, no insta- love here. Also I liked that despite everything they had gone through they finally were coming to terms with their feelings for one another. You could tell how much they cared for one another because they were so desperate to find each other again and they never gave up. I do want to know what the deal is with sneaky snake Riley. He gives me weird vibes. This was an awesome first book to the series and I can't wait to get my hands on book two. I would recommend this novel to both dystopian and survivalist fanatics.
