Whoa baby, what a book! This story was deliciously tense from the beginning and never let up. I loved it and am so glad I already own the next book. Problem is: I don't have the next one after that... yet. Must remedy that immediately! This one is a must-read, y'all.
I down loaded this free ebook , Overshadowed to my Kindle Fire. Was very surprised that the book had 10 chapters . I was only expecting maybe a chapter at the most. Overshadowed is a Prequel to Vannetta Chapman's Remnant Series. Deep Shadows begins the series and is followed by book two , Raging Storm , the authors latest release. This ebook also contains the first Chapter of Deep Shadows and a preview of The Raging Storm plus a note from the Author. Overshadowed brings readers into the last few minutes just before the start of the solar flare. The display of colorful lights that painted the dark sky accompanied by the loss of electricity. The story leaves us there with special air force secret agent Gab Thomas. He's been dispatched to a small Texas town to help the residents to cope with the devastating effects that the solar flare will bring to the community. Why weren't the people warned of the approaching solar flare? How many Government leaders knew but failed to prepare the people? I gave this book 5 stars because it takes readers to the threshold of the solar flare disaster. I liked the content of the ebook prequel and felt I was prepared then to read on into the series.
Overshadowed by Vannetta Chapman is the prequil to Deep Shadows of the The Remnant series. This is a powerful short story that will leave you wanting of the electrify excitement. I am so looking forward to reading book two in this series Raging Storm. Would you be ready for a major event like this? Vannetta Chapman has done a great job researching this story. Reading this makes me stop and wonder should I stock up for a major event. 5 stars!
Short little prequel to The Remnant series. Government agents know a solar flare will soon wipeout all power and electrical devices across the world. As the agents head to their assignments in county seats in Texas it all begins. Some of the public knows something is going on and they begin to panic. Social media tells of something going on. Those in the know tell a few who tell a few more. Will the public panic?
The solar flare happens and electricity goes out causing accidents all around due to no stop lights. Cellphones aren't working. How would you live without electricity or any kind of power? How quickly could you adjust? Can people live anymore without the internet or cellphones? We shall see in the upcoming series. Looking forward to it.
So the sun has a bit too much refried beans with its Mexican food and develops a bad case of gas - which causes a Coronal Mass Ejection (Sun fart) in our general direction. Rather than stinking up the place, it knocks out our electricity. Worse disaster ever - even our Kindles won't work any more!
Not so much a short story as a marketing exercise; a lead in to her next book, "Deep Shadows". Or perhaps it was the chapter the author forgot to write at the beginning of her book. Even for a free short story, I expected it to have a beginning, middle and end. In fact it only has a beginning. I hate any book that just leaves you hanging. I might read the much longer follow-up book, but probably not.
Overshadowed is the prequel to The Remnant Series, a dystopian collection of books taking a look at what the world would be like if a massive solar flare occurred, wiping out all modern technology.
A short story, the Kindle version of Overshadowed is available through Amazon free of charge. It's a quick read, but a preview of coming attractions in The Remnant Series. Order your Kindle copy in order to introduce yourself to a thrilling series! You'll be enlightened by the possibilities of the future.
In this prequel to The Remnant series the solar flare that would render all electronics and modern technology useless was actually seen coming by the government, and prepared for, unbeknownst to the general population.
Reading this I can totally see how and why people are preparing for something catastrophic.
If the world was going to go through a massive change that would end up in some dying, no communication available and a massive blackout what would you do? It happened in this story and it's going to turn the worldupside down in Texas.
A decent read but I don't think I'll follow the series.
Wow! This prequel did a great job of getting me hooked while not feeling like I'd been forced into the rest of the series by strategic cliffhangers--more like the setting and scenario have been established, and I've been invited to stay and see what happens next--and how could I not?!? The solar-flare/total-loss-of-power-grid scenario is one that I've heard before, but that certainly doesn't make it any less compelling, and even just the grim realities of the government's plans and preparations makes me want to know whether things are going to get as bad as they're picturing. I'm also curious when and whether we're going to get back to these characters, since they don't seem to be the main actors in the rest of the series. And I'm still chewing on the dilemma/conflict around wanting to warn people vs. not sparking a panic--some very interesting questions there... Anyway, all that to say, this was an extremely well done introduction to a series that has now been bumped to the top of my list!
4.5 stars
Content--mentions of accidents, wounds, and blood; anticipation of frightening survival scenarios
Overshadowed ( free Short Story ) ( The Remnant ) By: Vannetta Chapman
Wow and Wow, what a short story prequel to Deep Shadows by Vannetta Chapman. Reading Overshadowed got me to thinking that we are no where stocked up on supplies as we should be, and makes me want to run out and buy all I can . I read Deep Shadows and loved it . I can’t wait for The Raging Storm book two in The remnant series. Gabe Thompson received a phone call and he goes right into action. He is to relocate. He tells no one what he knows. He leaves his cat with his neighbor , and only tells her that she can have and use anything in his home she needs and takes off. Rumors going around , but no one knows the fully event of what is going to happen. Are you prepared for a solar flare, which would plunge the world into total darkness for decades to come? Chapman has done her research on this one and it has got me to really thinking .
Typically I do not like to discuss novels such as this for all of the conspiracy theories that pop up; however, I am so glad that I took a chance on this short novel and read it all the way through.
"Overshadowed" is a prequel to a series written by Vannetta Chapman, one that many (like myself) might not ever give a chance due to the followers that tend to swarm when one reads such novels. I saw this story on my list to read and was tempted to remove it, but somehow I accidentally clicked the wrong button and ended up downloading it anyways.
This story is about a world that is about to change forever. Everyone hears of the theories of how the world might end, and what can happen if we were to be without modern technology; however, no one is ever truly prepared for when that possibility becomes a reality. You will follow the beginning story of two important characters, one in the know, and one just learning the truth for the first time.
Once again Vanetta Chapman is bring us to our knees with a solar flare, and life as it is know is about the leave forever. This book is a prequel to Deep Shadows, which I have read, and you won’t want to miss, it is so real. To really entice you the author has made this book free, what can be better than that? What is about to happen is about to blow your socks off, and the most or maybe tragic fact is that this really can happen. Be ready to be quickly involved, and then move on to Deep Shadows, and then is the Remnant to come, I can’t wait. I received this book through the author and was not required to give a positive review.
The book started off and kept you interested from the beginning to end. Vannetta is one of my favorite authors. I have read a lot of her series and enjoyed eveyone
When I first read Vannetta Chapman's Shipshewana Amish Mysteries trilogy, I never imagined in a handful of years or so I would be reading the prequel of a dystopian series that she has also penned. I think jumping from Amish Fiction to Science Fiction & Fantasy is quite a leap and Vannetta has landed on her feet with ease. Overshadowed is the short story introduction to Vannetta's newest series, The Remnant. There is a preview of Deep Shadows, the first novel of the series also included.
As soon as I starting reading I was very quickly drawn into the story. Overshadowed is a very good short story. It sets the stage for an action packed, life-sized adventure in the next books of the series. Reading the preview of Deep Shadows got me wanting more! I liked all the characters I read about and couldn't wait to start Deep Shadows after getting a taste of what was going to happen. Be sure to check out Overshadowed - a quick read, faith-filled, dystopian story that will have you grabbing for the next book in the series.
This short story was well-written, and I came to care about the characters very quickly. However, though this is a prequel to a series, I wasn't sure that any of these characters were in the novels. If so, then stopping with the solar storm just hitting makes sense. Otherwise, I'm left wanting to know what happens to them and how they handle things. I'm not too worried about them, but I am curious.
Overshadowed by Vannetta Chapman is a short story free for purchase on the Amazon website. It is a prequel to The Remnant series. Survivalists will like this story as there are tips for how to prepare for a coming disaster that will last, according to this story, approximately forty years. The event is not the Zombie Apocalypse and not Ebola or a similar type of virus. The devastation will stem from the effects of EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) that will have an origin from space, perhaps the sun. We don’t have to consider the source. Imagine that humankind must continue to exist without electricity. What caused it won’t matter.
Overshadowed follows the efforts of a State government (Texas) as its government officials plan for a system of government at the county level that will exist as near independent nodes because coordinated communication will not survive.
Gabe Thompson received the alert message for Operation Nightshade while at a neighborhood barbershop. He had one hour to get his “Go” bag and report to military headquarters where he would be briefed on the implementation of a program he had spent two years training for along with 254 others, the number related to Texas county organization. Before he left for the military base, he had given his apartment key to Leonora, a neighbor. She was free to take and use anything in the apartment Gabe would not be returning.
After Gabe left, Leonora went to the apartment to find it stocked floor to ceiling with canned goods and vast amounts of staples such as salt. Leonora did not know what was going on, but she worked in a hospital. She had been trained in disaster response and triage. It was not difficult for her to connect dots. She loaded as much of the supplies as possible in an SUV and left for her parents’ house in a small Texas town with no industries and no tourist attractions. No one ever stopped there. The city was used to being self-sufficient, and their ability to do so would be tested along with the rest of the world during the next cataclysmic event.
In an author’s note readers find this: “ Research by NASA scientists indicates there is a 12 percent chance a large storm will happen in the next ten years. This report stresses that a coronal mass ejection, or CME, is not physically harmful, but it could blow out transformers in power grids and disrupt satellite systems, including GPS. A recent assessment by the Department of Homeland Security reported to Congress that a massive electromagnetic pulse (EMP) event caused by a solar flare could leave more than 130 million Americans without power for years.” (Kindle locations 717-719).
And to think people are worried about conspiracy theorists. This scenario seems to be much more likely and probable, disasters that don’t need the meddling of humans. Overshadowed is a four star Amazon read. The writing is good in this short story, and I look forward to reading at least some of the Remnant series.
Run.Breathe.Pray. How would you handle the a solar flare? The possibility of the modern world being changed as we know it? Who would you tell? I asked myself these questions, while reading this fast paced, thrilling prequel to Dark Shadows. Overshadowed makes the reader wonderful about how they would handle the scenario and if they would behave the same as the characters.
Gabe is our primary character, he is a level headed and holding a huge secret. There is a coming darkness but he can't share with anyone. He is also going undercover, as an agent for the government, he needs to leave his life fast. Gabe does this but thankfully leaves hints and his cat for Lenora, his neighbor. Gabe gave this calming present of experience and training to me as a reader. He may not know the extent of what is coming, but he is the one I would want to be close to when it happened.
Lenora, Gabe's neighbor knows something is very wrong. Gabe has left before but he has never left in such a way that gave her chills. Seeing the hints he left her in his apartment, Lenora decides she must act. Quickly, she attempts to warn her family, and a neighbor. She is kind, and takes precautions for what she thinks is coming. There is a part where the reader will quickly release the kindness of Lenora's heart and her want to help those that can't help themselves.
I felt as though these two characters were the ones I would want to be friends with if I was a character in the book. I found myself answering what if questions during this quick book, and then researching what a solar flare could really do. Vannetta Chapman did a great job in providing realistic details that won't concern a reader but will make them curious. Readers that love books with suspense, thrilling dystopian style book will gravitate to this series and this prequel.
Overshadowed is a prequel novella to the Remnant Series by Vannetta Chapman and is available as a free eBook from Amazon or Barnes&Noble.
What would happen if a massive solar flare hit the earth and knocked out electricity and communications? Overshadowed is a dystopian series that explores the idea and believe it or not, NASA says there is a 12% chance of a large storm coming in the next 10 years. A massive solar flare could leave millions of Americans without power for years!
For such a short novella, this little book is action packed and made me want to jump right into reading Deep Shadows.
This series will definitely make you think about putting together an Emergency Preparedness Plan and Kit. The CDC is a great resource for how to prepare for an emergency and has a list of the following as a guideline on how to prepare yourself.
Nice little novella that makes you want to read the whole series. A solar flare takes out all electrical grids, cell towers, etc. How will these people survive, from the ordinary citizens to a group of special agents! Intriguing!
What is really going to happen? Nobody really knows what's going on. When Gabe Thompson dropped everything and tells no one anything, it makes the reader wonder. What would happen if our lives went into complete darkness? Would any of us be prepared? Would we have even close enough provisions to help get us through? What causes this might be a solar flare. The author gives you something serious to think about. What if this really happened? Could we last years, even decades in total darkness? Ms. Chapman takes life as we know it and turns it 360. We no longer have things under control. Things are totally out of control. It appears Ms. Chapman did some extensive research that went into this book. This book is fiction but when you read it, it becomes non fiction. This really could happen to us. Think about it. Take this short story all in then after you found you are thinking on the real consequences, you go on to Deep Shadows and after that Remnant. I wouldn't be prepared for something like this, would you? IT will give you chills. It will spark a fear in you of what if? Makes you want to start stocking up for possibly the possibility. This is a nightmare that is building up for an explosion into our lives. Remember this is fiction with the possibility or perhaps, the probability of what's to come. No one knows what the future beholds.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and voluntarily decided to review it.
Overshadowed is an exciting book that introduces you to Gabe Thompson. He is in the military and has been preparing for a massive solar flare that will have terrible consequences for the public. He is contacted that the event is about to occur. He has a neighbor that he has befriended, Lenora. He cannot tell her what is about to occur but he does have provisions in his apartment and invites Lenora to use whatever she needs in the upcoming days.
Lenora becomes suspicious that something catastrophic is about to occur. She gathers the supplies Gabe has left, as well as his cat, and goes to her parent's home. While she is there, the solar flare occurs and immediately the power goes out all over and her phone no longer works.
Meanwhile, Gabe is assigned to a particular county in Texas where he will be stationed.
The book is suspenseful and really sets the stage for Deep Shadows. The book is incredibly well written.
