Rookie Mistake

Rate this book
Rookie Mistake is the first sexy installment in Bestselling Author Alice Ward's brand new sports romance series, The Beasts of Baseball.

I thought I'd achieved everything I ever wanted. Then I lost her...
Standing on the pitcher’s mound for a professional baseball team has been my dream since I was a small boy. Now I’m here, pitching for the newest team in the league — the New York Beasts — with the woman I’ve loved since high school by my side.
Calvin and Whitney forever! Wow, we made it.

But there’s a downside to instant fame and fortune, a trap that unleashes self-control and morals. A gilded cage that separates us from the real world. This is the big city, the major leagues — the big time. And temptation is around every corner. People change. We changed. Neither for the better. I don't even recognize us anymore.

Calvin and Whitney forever? I used to think so, but the beasts that had been hibernating in both of us have taken control, and now I’m not so sure. The dream has become a nightmare. Can we wake and find our way back to each other?

NOTE: Although this is the first book in the series, it has an emotionally charged HEA you won’t soon forget, and No Cliffhanger.

This was...well. Not my favorite thing, obviously.

Also obvious, I went on a bit of a reading binge this weekend while sick and bedridden and I think I read something like 10 books, so I'm a bit behind on reviews, etc.

Let's just sum it up:
- he gets hard by looking at fan girl's boobs and vagina
- he feels horny when fan girl straddles him
- he doesn't push her off (he actually gets hard and wants to continue)
- he thinks of other woman while having sex with his girlfriend
- he gets hard from looking at the other woman
- almost lets OW do a head on him in public and stops her because he sees the gf watching them
- jumps on bed with other girls and the OW pretty much straightaway WHILE begging for forgiveness to the gf and bitching about her not forgiving him. He didn't wait till deciding that she didn't forgive him so it was time to move on. He started fucking and was still begging to the gf at the same time. Let me spell it out. He was begging to her via voicemail in between his fuck sessions.
- calls gf to beg for forgiveness in the middle of orgies, and pretty much goes back to the girls and finds them "awfully sexy"
- finds girls "hot", "beautiful", "sexy", "flawless" and his dick gets hard by looking at them while his gf is present and resents the fact that he's spoken for!
- signs boobs in presence of gf and thinks of the "flawless" skin and wishes he was single.
I can keep going but I really need to go and puke!

It's a pass for me too. I agree with @Readingismyescape. The author ruined the romance when Hence the low rate for this book. 3.5 is not a great rate and only 100+ reviews? Not good
And according to this reviewer he also had . This book is more sickening than I thought. Why is this in romance genre again?? Is to show that doormats are easily forgiven people? Or are they going to use the argument she also had other people? Horrified at what this author by how this author is writing now. She's completely out of my list

No desire to read about a weak ass Hero who can't tell OW no while still dating the heroine. Furthermore, I have NO desire to read about high school sweet hearts who had only been with each other that upon their break up manage to fill their beds with multiple OW and OM. FYI -- that break up..only lasted a few months tops!

FUCK NO!

2.5

SG Ladies, if you haven't marked this as a pass...do so now :)

I didn't mind some of the OW shit during their separation (and there was a lot, but she got some too). I was actually more pissed with the H before the h broke up with him. He was so easily pressured into situations that got him into trouble. He put everyone and everything before the h and their relationship. The H had little understanding of what the h felt about his behavior and basically thought she was a nag. I'll agree that the h didn't handle shit well, but, frankly, I don't blame her. The H was so Beta the entire book, I'd have dumped him for his boss or the other MLB player in love with her...just sayin'

I think there was a bit of good H grovel compared to so many other books with cheating. I struggle to call it cheating cuz the sex happened during a separation and they both had others...I don't know that the H would have cheated on the h if they'd never broken up. But I think they would always have been headed for a timeout. The H was engaged in mental ogling of OW and a lot of lusting...but no doing of OW while H/h were together. It was how he mentally felt about the h at this time that let him consider OW. The H/h were virgins and each other's only until their separation.

Why 2.5?
Not for the OW, but the plot. It had some "conspiracy theory" elements that just dropped to the side and were never dealt with again. The H's hero worship of Ace to the point he let it damage his love life made him so Beta I was turned off. I also didn't like the H headspace POV for the first half cuz he was such a weak character and refused to deal with issues within his relationship and teammates. I do think this dealt with real problems a couple in this situation would experience and that saved this for me.

I know a lot of people will not like this one...

I'm a masochist reader so even though H/h was immature and kinda pissed me off, H wasn't that alpha (which is sad!) and heroine's insecurities made me want to pull my hairs out... I still read it and TBH enjoyed it! hehe!

Add up the temptations, H bein' confused, emotional cheating and the ow detailed sex scenes?

description

Not the best love story I've read but as I said.. I like train wreck stories. Its a good story when you want a flawed H who made a mistake. so yeah.. I'm giving this 3.5 stars!

This book was a joke, right??! But at least I know to avoid this author.

What woman in their right mind would ever take back a cheating loser who obviously doesn't give a shit about her? Oh that's right...a weak, pathetic one. But she obviously doesn't care about things like STDs seeing as she keeps having sex with him (even though he's thinking of another woman while having sex with her) while he's getting laid by women left, right and centre.

Yeah. Fucking bullshit. That's what I thought too.

I'm sorry (not sorry), but is this romance? Are these characteristics that are taken into account when evaluating a good book? A good writer? Please, when I read this kind of "thing," the only "thing" I can think of is how much crap modern writing has shrunk to. "This" is simply a bunch of sexist crap that says nothing to the reader, just disgusting behaviors and pathetic ideas from a person who has nothing better to do with his life but to copy the worst ideas that other "self-proclaimed" ones "" writers "put it all together in one" book "and simply throw up (ops publish) and hope to convince someone that this is somehow worth admiring or acknowledging. No, this is just pathetic, these are poor ideas, this is pure sexism, this is rubbish and it goes to the "bookshelf" of so many other writers that only serve to embarrass not only women but the category of writers. As a woman I already feel embarrassed, I'm glad I'm not a writer, so I don't have to have duplicate shame. Just please stop.

This book was definitely not for me.
Calvin and Whitney have known each
other since childhood. They are best
friends turned lovers. Calvin has made
it into the MLB and Whitney has
always been there by his side cheering
him on. So far so good....right?

Well, Calvin gets caught up in his MLB
life and it goes down hill from there.
He lets his career and groupies go
to his head. Whitney gets fed up with
him and they go there separate ways.

See the thing is, I really liked the premise
of this book. I liked both Calvin and Whitney.
But when they separated I had to read
about how bad Calvin wanted other women,
how other women were hot, I had to read
sex scenes with other women. I read
this genre for romance and this was no
romance. BUT what really made my
stomach hurt was before they broke up,
when him and Whitney were having sex,
he was thinking of the trampy women
he had to turn down, and he was seeing
groupies faces when he was with Whitney.

I wanted to DNF, but I was curious as to
how this was going to end. How in the
world this author thought that she could
bring me back from this. I really didn't
like Calvin. He was needy, selfish, and
a cheater.

So when Calvin finally realizes what he has
lost in Whitney, he does fight for her. He
does change his ways and I did believe that
loved Whitney. I was glad I finished it, but
it still was not a book for me.

The next in the series is about Ace. Ace was
the a-hole MLB friend who pressured
Calvin into doing the things he did and
Ace was horrible towards women. I loathe
him.

Needless to say this author is not for me.

I'm not sure who I disliked more. Calvin & Whitney or Ace and Holly. I just couldn't understand how stupid and distracted both Calvin and Whitney let fame wreck their relationship.

I feel horrible for giving this book a two. To be honest the only other non5 book of Ms. wards for me was Recipe for Lust. Rookie mistake just had too many things I dislike in a book. I'm not big on second chances period much less if it involves OWs. I know too many think maybe he didn't cross the line until after Whitney went back to Indiana. To me it started with him first lusting after the OWs. He bails on Whitney to drink with the guys and let's a woman straddle him and grind her bare vj on him. How about when you see a woman with lust in her eyes walking to you, you get up and leave. Plus he got hard. Whitney forgives him. He continues to go out with the guys. Checking out the hot woman he sees in detail not just "she's pretty". Another woman fondles his dick while Whitney is sitting by him at a blind food tasting. Don't get me wrong Whitney had some faults but that doesn't equal his behavior. Perhaps his constant going out and partying created the insecurities she had. Spending money like crazy is something almost all young celebrity/athletes do. I think they should automatically be set up through their team with a financial advisor. So got excited and overdid it. Then he screwed Whitney while thinking of two other chicks. And wait then he let the chick he was thinking about get close enough to drop to her knees and try to suck him off which Whitney sees.
I was glad Whitney left but that caused a downward spiral for Cal. He drank and screwed everything including the bitch that Whitney saw trying to suck him off. However I was glad Whitney dated and slept with a few guys while they were apart. Usually they wait like a doormat for the other to finally come to the realization after getting their dick wet by everybody. That's kind of what happened after Cal had a threesome he realized he didn't like this version of himself. But a scorned lover had different ideas. He gets Whitney back and almost loses her again. I could NEVER new bed or not have stayed in the house he screwed everybody in. Sorry but no. That's the part I struggle with. I can forgive but never forget. I would see him with every other woman in my mind forever never trusting him and that's not a good relationship I'd want. Ace is an ass and Holly is crazy. He screwed girls with her there then screwed her later. No! I don't think I will continue with this series but I still will try her other books.

I can't believe I read over 200 pages of a romance between two people where the hero's inner monologue is more about how much literally every other woman except the heroine makes him hard and how guilty he feels about thinking about them while being with her

no like seriously. look.

I loved the way the simplest touch from her could send tingles through my entire body. I hated that those same tingles were felt by the brunette under the table at dinner and wondered if I should confess to what happened.

ugh GAG

She was a hot little number with beautiful green eyes and thick red lips. I wondered what else she had pierced as Whitney slapped my arm.
“Did you hear what I said?” she snapped. Shit, no, I hadn’t listened to a word of it.
“Sorry, baby,” I apologized and pulled away from the window, leaving the hot young redhead forever, suddenly feeling irritated at Whitney for being the reason I would never know what other piercings were on her milky white body. “What did you say?”

STOP THIS PLEASE. THIS IS EMBARRASSING WHY IS THIS CONSIDERED ROMANCE ??

The hostess was quick to recognize me and took me to the VIP section where I received that fateful lap dance from the nasty blonde Ace was finger fucking. I slid into the booth, claiming it as my own and felt an even stronger, yet not so strange satisfaction.

man, I was done reading this book by this point.

I wanted to kick myself in the balls as she turned and looked over her shoulder. That was probably the hottest woman I’d ever seen, and I just turned her down. My cock twitched again inside my pants, not out of excitement this time, but utter disappointment.

aw poor u turning down a woman because u have a girlfriend.

okay here's a whole ass dump because I was raging at this point

“You didn’t go because you wanted to fuck her.”
“Oh c’mon, I don’t even know her. She was being nice, so I was polite, that’s all,” I lied. I did want to fuck her. The thought of those red lips around my cock and those baby blues looking up at me was what made me twitch in my pants.

“Wouldn’t it be nice to fuck whoever you wanted and not feel guilty?” he asked.
I was feeling guilty, or at least I had when my thoughts drifted to Caroline’s lips and her thin white top that left little to the imagination without a bra underneath.

Marty and Frank were already squeezed into our regular booth with two cute blondes leaning over the table with shorts so short they made my dick hurt.

“Are you coming?” Mandy or Candy asked me directly. If they didn’t stand up and take their tits from my face soon, yes, I would be coming right in my pants.

“C’mon, don’t be a pussy,” Ace goaded. He reached for her cheeks again, spreading her wide open. My cock twitched at the sight, and without giving it another thought, I licked my index and middle finger, held them tightly together and slapped against her warm flesh.

“You coming or going?” a familiar female voice sounded in my ear. I turned to see Caroline standing close to my left side. Her hot breath was still tickling my ear as my eyes widened and my mouth fell open without any words. She giggled. Damn, she had a sexy laugh.
“Going,” I quickly answered, pulling myself back to reality and out of the dream where I’m single and get to explore what it’s like to have a woman like her.

An image of Caroline shot into my head as I slid Whitney’s panties from her hips. I pushed it out as quickly as it appeared and returned my attention to the woman I loved.

She looked into my eyes and I into hers and felt nothing but love. But as soon as my eyes were closed, I pictured Caroline’s smile, her full breasts and felt her touch.
I hated myself.

holy shit ... this was all in one chapter. frankly, I deserve a medal for reading this without clawing my eyes out.

Having a hard time rating this one. The fame, fortune and limelight did have affect on the H and to some extent the h as well. H did experience regret for not keeping his head in the game. This was ok - what bothered me most is that the author desensitizes the reader with so much "sports stars behaving badly" (in your face random groping, sex with random groupies) and with their female partners (h) that the sex becomes boring - so who cares?) The story is not bad but after all the really objectifying, really slutty behavior - I didn't care about the characters as I should have. 2 stars.

3.5 Stars - Overall I was O.K. with Calvin and Whitney's story. He is now the rookie pitcher on Team Beasts and his fame and association with the all time greats is going to his head quickly. When Whitney moves all the way from Indiana to live with Calvin....their relationship is truly tested and it takes a severe beating from all sides.

Calvin becomes influenced with one of his idols, Ace Newman. This character could not make me love him, at all. I see book two is about him and I truly do not know how he will redeem himself in my eyes. He was good looking and hot, but arrogant and nasty. I truly hope he redeems himself. Because of Ace, I disliked the hero until around the 80% mark. Hi am glad with the ending.

I was generous with giving this a 3.5 star rating. I feel women were not a top priority, they were expendable and usable, for that and She's nastiness I could not rate it higher. I truly the can make readers fall for him or at keast understand his brain in book two. Fingers crossed.

I absolutely hated this book with every fiber of my being! I hated the whiny Whitney, the slutty and selfish friend Holly, the terrible people called teammates. Every single element of this book pissed me off and disgusted me. I can't even believe I wasted my time reading it. it was like a terrible car accident that I rubbernecked to see the gruesome scene. I liked Dom vs the Virgin and this book was a bonus. I probably will never read the others but maybe if I get bored I will. anyway, this review is just a reminder to NOT READ THIS HORRIBLE EXCUSE OF A RAG AGAIN!

OK I don't know where to start with this book, cuz Whitney & Calvin were disaster in making. I couldn't connect with their relationship start from the beginning. Not just the MCs but there's not a single desirable character in this book that's worth mentioning especially the h (I like to call her as zeroine) Whitney was so one-dimensional that there's no character development.

𝘍𝘦𝘸 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘥...

Coming to the plot, Calvin, a rookie baseball player from small town Indiana gets his dream chance at a big NY based team, so he moves there with his gf Whitney. Soon all the fame, hot women fawning over the players, booze and particularly his jerk of a idol Ace gets to him, where he starts enticed towards losing himself to the temptation. Which leads to the breakup, him spiraling to a party animal and then coming to his senses.

You know, when the zero Calvin & zeroine Whitney met again to patch up things I was like WTF? 😬😏 That's it?
In most of the romance novels, when there's trouble in paradise between the couple, though you didn't like how it was solved, there would be a teeny-tiny part of you that rooted for their happiness but here OMG! I just wanted them to go their separate ways or whatever. I don't know whether they believed in each other, but I definitely didn't believe in their so called love. It was utter rubbish like we're force fed that they were a loving couple and a HEA wait! no a HFN.

But I have to give it to the author, though I didn't like this book & it's MCs, she captured very well how there's temptation at every corner of your life when you come to limelight. Also her writing was good, it kept your attention despite its lack of in-depth personation.

Cheating part: Calvin was continuously tempted by scantily clad women who throw themselves at him & Ace. He also fantasised about Caroline (OW) when he was with Whitney, but actually he never acted on that although he was caught in a compromising position twice. But after the breakup he completely lived up-to his fantasies. So there's that. I think it's upto the readers how they see it.

The author justifies everything by,
1. Calvin & Whitney were each others' first since highschool.
2. Calvin's company with Ace lead him to everything that happened.
3. Whitney acting like a bitch to Calvin when she first comes to NY due to her insecurities.
4. Seems like Whitney was also with three men during their separation which was not actually shown but she tells Calvin. But we get detailed sexcapades of Calvin's (including a threesome with two girls).
5. Being with others was them "sowing their wild oats"! (Zeroine herself states that) 🤐

So that's it. God, I really need a good book to distract me from this nightmarish characters. 🤓👋

I had mixed feelings with this book...I liked it but as I was imagining my self in Whitney's place I would of clobbered Calving in the head......
A small town boy making it big in the big leagues was a dream for Calvin and Whitney. They have been each others best friend and lovers since high school but the pressure of being an instant celebrity and a rookie will test every aspect of their relationship. On top of that, Calving has Ace Newman as his teammate, which Calvin has been idolizing the man for years, pressuring him to leave Whitney because of the "ADVANTAGES" being a celebrity opens for him! I hate Ace in this book. Calvin gets him self in many troubled situations loosing Whitney for his bad boy behaviors until he realizes nothing being a celebrity has to offer is worth being alone without her. He needed to stop following the man he idolized and follow his heart to try to win Whitney back.

First let me start with saying I love Alice Ward...I've read several of her different series and individual books such as the Lords of the City Series, Recipe for Lust, stepbrother books, etc. This new series so far is not on my OMG list...

Calvin has made it to the big leagues and now is a pro baseball pitcher. He's been with his girl Whitney for years, and they are excited to start this new leg of their journey together. But fame has a way of getting to a person, and Calvin may not be able to fight off temptation. His idle Ace Newman is a teammate and is hell bent on leading him down the road to temptation and getting him to a status of single instead of taken. As much as he tries to fight it, it starts to become between him and his girl Whitney.

Whitney is so extremely happy that all of the hard work her boyfriend Calvin has put into baseball is finally paying off. Now apart of a professional team, she is moving away from her small town to join him. But when she gets there she finds him drunk in a bar with some chick that barely has any clothes on grinding in his lap. One slap across his face later and she's out the door....

The story overall isn't bad....new kid on the team makes some personal mistakes while trying to figure out his career. The thing that I wasn't a fan of was how quickly Calvin was swayed by everything new, including the women. For me he didn't try very hard to push it away or stand up to his teammates to protect his relationship. I'm not a big fan of infidelity, and this one was pushing that line severely. Don't let this one book turn you off of Alice Ward.

This book was like a bad accident that you can't stop staring at. I hated the two main characters throughout the beginning of the book, Whitney was a bitch and I wanted to slap her and Calvin was a spineless asshole who couldn't make up his mind about the type of man he wanted to be. I seriously felt no love between the two of them and couldn't figure out why they even wanted to be together in the first place. Why did Whitney even move to New York? Why didn't Calvin stand up for himself and his relationship to his teammates? AND while I feel like Calvin had more blame for their relationship failing, Whitney certainly wasn't innocent and she was quite hypocritical. I know that sounds vague, but I don't want to give any spoilers. Just know that you will pretty much hate every character in this book at some point (insert eye roll).

ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review.
I have read a few other books by Alice Ward, and loved them.

The main character of this story are Calvin and Whitney who have been together in high school and younger, now Calvin made it to the Major Leagues recruited, a rookie pitcher, things moving so fast. Whitney moved to be with him, now all the notoriety, fans, women flirting, drinking, and girls throwing themselves at Calvin, him being tempted, even though he is committed to Whitney there is so much jealousy on both sides. They are unhappy, feeling pressured, the trust is doubted, will their love survive, too many temptations. Will she be able to tame her inner beast with him the minor league's?
