Hmmm....

Several years ago, I stumbled upon Eve Vaughn. The first book I read from her was Candy Girl. I loved it. So imagine my surprise when she popped on my radar again. In the past 60 days, I've read two books by her and they just don't have the same spark for me. Too many times in this book, the characters told you their story. I didn't get to see the story line unfold. The plot was nearly stagnant and barely moved forward that a time jump of 6 months needed to be incorporated to get the plot moving. Also, in the beginning of the book I noticed typos here and there and thought nothing of it but around halfway through the book there was a typo on each page I read until the end. It made me feel like the editor quit halfway through the book and it got published halfway through.

I hate that I may sound harsh but I feel compelled to give the unvarnished truth. Will this author have a special place in my heart as one of rhetorical first interracial romance authors I've ever read? Absolutely. Do I think Ms. Vaughn has talent? Without a doubt. It is my sincere hope that the next time I read one of her books it will give me the feeling that Candy Girl did and keep me engrossed all night.

Not bad, but loaded with problems.

I honestly expected more from such an established writer. I'd understand if this story was from a first time writer, but c'mon. The storyline is actually very good, but it written sloppily. There are missing words, typos, lack of character development, and other unfortunate gems. I wish this book would have focused on the development of their relationship in their young adult years. It would have given the rest of the book meat.

Always count on Ms. Vaughn

Ms. Vaughn is simply one of those authors that you always can count on to give you a good story. If you choose it , I've never been disappointed.

*sighs* Where do I begin with this one? Where do I begin? As always, there's spoilers ahead.

Beware! Read at your own risk.

Now, this is a case of another book that has an amazing concept and vision but poor execution. This story definitely grabbed my attention. The description/blurb drew me in and made me excited to start reading it. Unfortunately, it started off fairly strong and it only got worse as the plot progressed. I'm a sucker for a good reverse harem book, but this one is easily one of the significantly weaker ones I've read this year.

My main issue with this book, and books like it, is this weirdness where the author constantly and consistently demonizes and attempts to make the female character appear unreasonable for things that are simply common sense. Alex was reluctant to pick up and leave her entire life behind for two guys she hadn't spoken to in eight years! Yet, they expected her to pick up and move in a mere six months. They expected her to make a decision in less than a year. How does that make sense?! I don't understand how Alex became the bad guy in that situation when she was simply doing what any average, sane person would do. I wouldn't leave a cozy, well-paying job, good home, and friends for two guys I hadn't spoken to in years. There's no way I'm picking up, destroying my life, and running back to the hometown that almost destroyed me for two guys who didn't care enough to even send me a postcard in eight whole years. No, sir!

Yes, I understand that Rusty and Cash attempted to soften the blow of their lack of communication with her for all those years by claiming that they were always 'taking care' of her but from the shadows. How rather convenient, don't you think? That appears to be a rather convenient reason to justify their lack of communication for almost a decade. Plus, the sheer lack of realism at play here is astonishing. There's no way two full-blooded, cishet men are abstaining from any sexual contact for eight years. That's not happening. I don't care if they didn't engage in PIV sex, but I highly doubt they went without for eight years. This is what I mean when I say the concept is an amazing one but the execution needed to be better.

The whole thing with Alex and her grandmother is also something that really grinded my gears. Her grandmother treated her like crap for her entire life subsequently kicking her out of her own home when she was a vulnerable teenager. I'm sorry but there's no way Alex needed to forgive that woman for anything. If anything, that woman should have been metaphorically dead to Alex. I don't even want to talk about the irritation that filled my gut when the brothers attempted to guilt trip Alex into coming to see a bitter old woman who's on her deathbed. That scenario was for Alex's grandmother's benefit and not for Alex. The author wanted to absolve Alex's grandmother of any sort of guilt and wrongdoing before she transitioned to the next part of her journey. That's what that was, and I'm incredibly disappointed in how that whole thing panned out.

Just a smidgen of realism and logic would have made this story amazing. Alas, it lacked both of those things and I'm disappointed because I had high hopes for this one. Again, the description caught my eye and it excited me. It failed to live up to and/or exceed my expectations and that saddens me. (Sidenote: you would think I'd learned my lesson a long time ago about trusting BookTok because this was another 'BookTok made me do it' thing.)

Is this a rough draft?

While a good enough story, the constant slew of grammatical errors and bad transitions within this entire book made this a pain to read at times. The story line really is good, the characters, the background and detail.. but, the writing itself, oh my word. I feel like this was carelessly rushed to be typed up or something, and not proofread. There were even times the character Alexandra was talking and was referred to as "he", in the same paragraph? Words that didn't even make sense where placed mid sentence and you'd have to read it again to make sure you knew what it was meant to say.. the actual story deserves the stars, but the writing I can't get over.

A great 😃 intro to alt lifestyles

This was a good introduction to ppl who have alternative lifestyles and relationships. Everyone has a different start to romantic relationships and it's good to see the story from different perspectives. It would have been if the author had gone deeper with Cash and Rusty's POV. Otherwise pretty good plot. Let me know if you need to hire someone to proof read bc there were a lot of spelling and grammar errors.

Good story!

Very good story with a little taboo! What got to me were all of the typos, missed words, etc. I usually can overlook an error hear and there, but you could definitely tell that someone dropped the ball in the editing department. I enjoyed the book, but the issues made it difficult to read at times!

This had to be in the beginning of Vaughn's career. This was not up to standard. I felt no love. A repeat of the same works. I could just take her right here and now. Give me a break. I don't recommend this one at all.

This should have been way better than it was

The premise was great however way to many typos for this caliber of an author. I don't know how this was allowed to be published with this many errors.

Secondly I don't feel like this is a completed story.

Disappointing

The story lacks direction. If felt rush and the story line is literally all over the place. The steamy scenes where lackluster and basic. There were so many spelling errors my head hurt. Disappointing to say the least.

Home.

Alex leaves home for college, relieved to be away from her grandmother and the gossips in her small town. Cash and his brother miss her so much. Their mom hates her. Will they all heal? Will Alex come home to stay or just to visit? Great summer read.

I enjoyed this interracial menage story. All parties involved were virgins upon meeting and didn't get involved in other relationships.

I like this book but I hate how no one is really on the FL's side. She has a very valid trauma and reducing it to her "being insecure" is actually making me want to spit fire.

My fantasy.

I have always wanted to have two. The flow of the story was ok. The feel was too quick, but I got it. However, if this would ever happen? Not likely. It was great seeing the maturity of Alex.

Boring. A story about a threesome and it's utterly boring. No character development, contrived scenarios, and lukewarm sex. Not worth the read.
