In the aftermath of an apocalyptic battle, all that remains in the world of Blame! is Killy is on the brink of death, and Cibo's fusion with the Level 9 Safeguard unit has reduced her once-impressive intellect to that of a child. As the merciless silicon creatures close in, a mind-boggling spherical space inside the city may hold the key to salvation... "Action packed, bloody, and cerebral to the core, it's stunningly drawn and impossible to put down." -Dave Halverson, Play Magazine
Tsutomu Nihei (弐瓶 勉 Nihei Tsutomu, born 1971) is a Japanese manga artist. His cyberpunk-influenced artwork has gained a strong cult following. He has a relatively large community of fans in Germany where his manga Blame!, NOiSE and Biomega were published by Ehapa. Blame! was also published in France and Spain by Glénat, in the US by Tokyopop and in Italy by Panini Comics.
At first he studied architecture and later it is shown up in his manga works with drawing huge structures. This became one of his general theme that makes his manga unique. His works are usually in black and white. He is also an avid fan of the video game series Halo, as he mentions in his commentary section in the Halo Graphic Novel.
Chibo's lost her memory and turn into semi-child like figure.
Killy's already in full recovery and now looking for clues to find Chibo.
While doing so, he stubble a group of builders(AI robots without humanoid body) whose guarding a dying man with possibility having a connection to the NET-TERMINAL GENE.
Yet Killy hesitate to gain info on him(possibly afraid his body getting hack and steal).
While on the top of the construct he meet a Non-hostile Silicon Creatures whose navigating a never ending unfinished construction.
And...wat..is..dat..thing?
ALRIGHT ALMOST THERE. GONNA TRY TO MAKE MY OWN INTERPRETATION OF THE STORY AFTER READING THE LAST Vol
Without the synopsis I would have been totally in the dark. Still, is this a different story? The characters speak about as much as before, but nothing makes sense any more. Not that half of what I read so far made any sense. Is this part of the series filler for a grand finale or is the author running out of ideas? How did he manage almost 200 pages with so little happening?
Cibo fused with a 9th level safeguard, because it says so in the synopsis, and is now relearning to speak. Killy had his ass handed to him in some pretty destructive scenes, but he is apparently nigh indestructable and repairs his damage for the next leg of his journey to nowhere. Any other detail is meaningless as far as I can tell.
This dark, gritty, alienating, violent cyberpunk manga is really good. The artist Nihei is really gifted to draw buildings and he creates an empty world left with never ending growing buildings, metallic structures, and deadly creatures out to get you. The structures and the Safeguards who were once protecting the population, are now out of control and kill everyone on sight, due to a virus the population was exposed to. Killy is set to find a person whose genes (Net Terminal Genes) are uncorrupted by the virus in order to get back the control over the structures and the Safeguards since only such a person can access the control center. During that time the Silicones, the official bad guys, keep causing troubles and want to stop Killy. Thankfully, Killy is a powerful cyborg and makes friend along the way with Cibo a scientist.
The manga has barely any dialogue, Blame! is the kind of manga where you really have to pay attention to each image and even reread a few times the manga in order to really understand what is going on. I think it is worth it.
We re back on track! It looks like its building to something big and deep. It still doesn't say anything, and keeps the mysteries, well... Mysterious. I just hope one last volume is enough to answer them. At least the main ones.
But I did enjoy these chapters way more than the last ones. It felt like the beginning of the manga. Creepy and weird, with intriguing characters populating the world Killy wanders by. Like the 'pen-drive guy' he carries with him after accepting its quest lol I love these silly moments and the dialogue Nihei writes.
And now I'm getting the DISTINCT feeling I got in the later parts of Nier Automata. It's a very unique feeling. And now that I'm reading Blame! this way, I'm really respecting it a lot more because it came out first. Or perhaps I respect Nier more for how it really ran with aspects of Blame!?
I don't know. Blame! goes rather hard and a lot farther in some ways. It's very impressive, either way.
BLAME! Volume 9 is an excellent entry in this uniquely uncommon cyberpunk manga series by Tsutomu Nihei. The sparse dialogue, as usual in BLAME!, leaves space for the visuals and the feeling of isolation to speak for themselves.
The minimalism enhances the tension and emotional impact.
