Length: 9 hours and 39 minutes

A thrilling new novel from No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Johanna Lindsey.
One duel could be considered a matter of honor, but three duels are attempted murder! With enlightened society outraged at such reckless behavior among young noblemen, the Prince Regent orders Robert Whitworth, the earl of Tamdon’s heir, and Lord Dominic Wolfe to end their dispute by allying their families through marriage. Whichever party refuses to comply will forfeit his lands and title.

Whitworth relishes the idea of sending his younger sister Brooke to his enemy’s remote estate. He knows the Wolf will reject her as a bride, thereby losing his wealth and status. The Wolf, however, is determined to scare away the Whitworth chit. With dueling no longer an available means of destroying the man he abhors, he will be satisfied to see him lose his lands and title. But he hadn’t expected his enemy’s sister to be so resourceful or resilient.

Brooke Whitworth has been dreaming of her first Season in London because she intends to win a husband who will take her far away from her unloving family. Instead, she is being sent to the Yorkshire moors to wed a mysterious nobleman whose family is cursed and who has thrice tried to kill her brother. But there’s no room in her heart for fear; this man is her means of escape. She will make him love her!

Johanna Helen Howard was born on March 10, 1952 in Germany, where her father, Edwin Dennis Howard, a soldier in the U.S. Army was stationed. The family moved about a great deal when she was young. Her father always dreamed of retiring to Hawaii, and after he passed away in 1964 Johanna and her mother settled there to honor him.

In 1970, when she was still in school, she married Ralph Lindsey, becoming a young housewife. The marriage had three children; Alfred, Joseph and Garret, who already have made her a grandmother. After her husband's death, Johanna moved to Maine, New England, to stay near her family.

Johanna Lindsey wrote her first book, Captive Bride in 1977 "on a whim", and the book was a success. By 2006, with over 58 Million copies of her books have been sold worldwide, with translations appearing in 12 languages, Johanna Lindsey is one of the world's most popular authors of historical romance.

Johanna's books span the various eras of history, including books set in the Middle Ages, the American "Old West" and the popular Regency England-Scotland. She has even written a few sci-fi romances. By far the most popular among her books are the stories about the Malory-Anderson Family, a Regency England saga.

Johanna Lindsey died on Oct. 27, 2019 in Nashua, N.H. She was 67.

22/8 - This is getting 1 star for having the stupidest, most contrived 'get the couple alone so they can pre-empt their wedding night' scene I've ever read.

And there you have it, the moment when I realised this was a dreadful book. Prior to that scene it was going along at about three stars, some juvenile writing (especially for an author as experienced as Lindsey), but it was reasonable. I had no objections to the characters or general plot, in fact the plot was sorely misused (it could have been quite enjoyable), but after that scene things just got worse. After spending over half the book showing the reader how much Dominic disliked and distrusted Brooke, his near-instantaneous off-page about-face during the storm was completely unbelievable. The stupidity didn't stop with the above scene, there was a very drawn out and confusing search for a missing baby, a sudden solution to Dominic and Brooke's forced marriage dilemma that could easily have been brought up when Prinny first made his demand (Brooke even questioned the fact that the solution was only coming to light on their wedding day). It all just became ludicrous and was then wrapped up so quickly that I felt like my head was spinning with all the twists and turns that suddenly, magically untangled themselves. A very disappointing offering from such a well-known voice in romance.

Whaaaaat? I was not expecting that end! I was expecting one third of what happened but the plot twist was awesome. I just couldn't believe it.

Another thing that was unbelievable was how mature the 17 year old heroine is. I am not sure a lot of people on her place would be that mature. The hero was a beast. Ofc he had his reasons for being so crazy mad, but a beast nonetheless. I loved it.

Oh, man! What a plot twist! I definitely did not see that coming. A huge shocker. lol.

A very fast read. I was half way through the book before I realized it and saw no reason to stop and finished the book the same day I bought it. It didn't even feel like I've read 406 pages. I hope there's a book 2 or at least a book about Robert, redeeming his character.

Just plain Okay read. Started good, then just nose dived to boring from there. The end twist was unexpected, but yet again not great.

Unfortunately, I've stopped expecting anything great from Johanna Lindsey. So the book was actually as I expected, lukewarm.

Make me Love You by Johanna Lindsey is a 2016 Pocket Books publication.

This latest endeavor by Johanna Lindsey is a light historical romance centered around Brooke Whitworth and Lord Dominic Wolfe, whose families are sworn enemies. After Dominic and Brooke’s brother engage in not one, not two, but THREE duels, the prince regent steps in and insists Brooke and Dominic marry. If they refuse, they stand to lose a vast amount of their land holdings.

With no loyal feelings towards her family, Brooke is not all together upset about leaving her family, but Dominic hates Brooke’s family and has decided to do everything in his power to make her leave.

But, when the alluring Brooke arrives, Dominic finds it harder and harder to shoo her away, but he still holds a dark grudge against her brother, and nothing will appease him until he sees justice done.

Can Brooke make Dominic love her?

The plot has potential and got off to a strong start, but quickly lost momentum, and became dull and lifeless until a late development charged in to save the day.

If you are an old timer like me, you will remember the JH stories of old, and will recall, she wasn’t afraid to push the envelope, but the newer releases seem to be Johanna Lindsey lite, or a kinder, gentler Johanna Lindsey.

That’s okay, I definitely understand why and I get it. Many readers will find this book to their liking, and will not have a problem with, or even notice, the watered down plot, the lack of searing passion, or the dull, unimaginative dialogue, since many current historical romances suffer from the same iron deficiency.

But, for those who remember the powerhouse this author was, it’s a little hard to take. Don’t get me wrong, the story is no better or worse than the average historical romance out there, and It’s fine for an easy to read, fluffy sort of romance when you are in the mood for that sort of thing.

I struggled with how to rate this one, but because it was enjoyable enough to while away a lazy afternoon, I’ll stand in the middle of the road and give it 3 stars.

I can barely believe this is a Johanna Lindsey book. Not that I have read that many books of her. However, I have come to expect a certain degree of angst and romance from her that this book didn't satisfy.

First of all, am I really supposed to believe the protagonists love each other when they spent 99% of the book butting heads and not in a good way?

Brooke was all like 'I need to make him love me so that he won't send me away.' and Dominic was all like 'Be gone with ye, witch! I won't tolerate a Witworth in my own home. You're a plague upon this earth.'

Long story short, Dominic spent the entire book pushing her away and she spent it making up ridiculous schemes to seduce him. There was hardly anything that made me believe there could be something worthwhile between them.

Sure, there were a few kisses and one night of sex that was terribly bad and very far from the usual emotion riddled Lindsey love scenes.

So what? I need more. I need words, glances, touching. I need it to feel real and believable.

Also, can I just say the fact pretty much all the 'villains' turned out to be somewhat good guys was complete bullshit? All that talk about duels, blood, poison and murder and then we got jack. Ridiculous!

I'm really disappointed. 'Make Me Love You' had incredible potential and I actually loved the beginning, hence why I gave it 2 stars. Pity it all went out the window.

Back in the eighties and nineties I escaped the every day world of diapers and dinners by opening beautiful romances by this author. Since I am a loyal fan, I was thrilled to see a new book. She did not disappoint. Strong heroines and equally strong heroes who always need to have sense beaten into them by the women. When you're a young mother who can't get her husband to put his laundry in the hamper much less operate the machine, these novels hit the spot brilliantly.

Back when I was a little baby Elyse, still too embarrassed to check out romances from the library lest the librarian judge me, I raided my aunt’s Johanna Lindsey stash. I had just finished reading everything Kathleen Woodiwiss had ever written (which wasn’t much) and was hungering for more. My aunt was an avid romance reader and had all of Lindsey’s paperbacks lining several shelves in her basement. It was a feast of bronze-chested Fabios, golden mullets fluttering in the wind.

So I have a lot of happy Lindsey memories. Fast forward eleventy billion years, and I was interested to see how Make Me Love You held up against my own nostalgia. Turns out you can’t relive those halcyon days of shimmering mullets and violet-eyed heroines. It wasn’t that I disliked Make Me Love You, it just wasn’t as cracktastic as Lindsey’s Old Skool romances, and, frankly, there are much better examples of regencies flooding the market right now. I mean, it was less rapey than Lindsey’s Old Skools (which I would fully expect), a little softer, with still a smattering of crazysauce thrown in, but it wasn’t amazing.

The plot is pretty standard regency fare with a nod to the Gothic. The heroine, Brooke Whitworth has to travel to the dreary moors of Yorkshire to marry Dominic Wolfe because Wolfe and her brother have had a long-standing feud that’s resulted in three duels. The Prince Regent thinks that by uniting the two families in marriage, he’ll get rid of the fighting.

It’s clear that Lindsey’s writing has changed. There’s no forced seduction. Brooke is a much more fully realized character than past Lindsey heroines. She has a complex relationship with her mother. She has hobbies and talents and interests–like medicine and horse breeding. Dominic doesn’t hold up as well. He never veers into alphahole territory, but you can tell he wants to. He’s grumpy and difficult but never domineering. The result is sort of bland. He’s handsome and pouty but never very heroic or interesting. For most of the book he’s just chronically misinformed, and that’s the basis of his conflict. It’s never great when the reason the hero can’t admit he loves the heroine is because he has bad information–it feels too thin and insubstantial.

Honestly the thing I liked best about this book was comparing it to the Lindsey’s of old and reliving my early romance days. Make Me Love You isn’t a bad book, but it doesn’t hold its own among more nuanced, character-driven historicals.

I gave this book a C+ for the story and a B+ for the narration at AudioGals

Narration by Beverley A. Crick

Every once in a while I listen to a romance audiobook that while the blurb attracts me, the actual execution of the story just misses. Unfortunately, that was the case for me for Make Me Love You. In the end, while I was interested enough to listen to the entire story, and definitely felt invested enough to know how the story was resolved, I just had trouble feeling the love connection between the hero and the heroine. In that regard, it just felt too forced and unlikely and I ultimately had trouble believing that a heroine and particularly the hero, in this case, with such deep seated familial animosity, could overcome this animosity based on the way the story occurred. Fortunately, the above average narration by Beverley A. Crick was a driver in helping me listen to this title to the end.

*DNF on page 193*

It had an almost spicy scene that I wasn't comfortable reading, and from reading the last chapter there was an actual spicy scene that I had to skip over, so between the two and knowing that there's a very high chance of there being spicy scenes in the middle section of the book, I decided to DNF this book. Also, the writing wasn't the greatest and the characters didn't have much depth to them, plus the story overall was going pretty slowly, which did this book no favors.

I took a real chance with this book. There weren't enough reviews or ratings to get an accurate idea about the book BUT the blurb was pretty compelling.

I'm so happy to say my gamble paid off.
I loved it.
Kinda sweet, kinda tart.
Couldn't keep the smile off my face.
I had way too much trouble putting it down.
Even ended up being rude to my guests by ignoring them and continuing to read instead :P
....
It was worth it! :P

Update: Still very bad. One of the worst HR books I've read. Might just give up because it is a waste of my time.
---------

I can't believe I'm still reading this. It's terrible.

The plot is ridiculous, the dialogue is painful, the characters are awful ... bad, bad, bad. It's a bad book.

Plus, it's not much of a romance. The "hero" and heroine don't like each other very much, and the "hero," especially, doesn't seem interested in the heroine at all. Like, at all. (I put "hero" in quotes because he's more of jerk than most of these guys.) It's a bizarre way to structure a story. The first time they have sex (I haven't gotten to a second, if there is one) was one of the least loving, romantic sex scenes ever.

Brooke (major anachronism, name-wise) and Dominic are forced into a betrothal by the Prince Regent. She's 17-almost-18 and hates her family (who are terrible to her) so she's mostly OK with being given away to a complete stranger. Dominic is almost 25 (which is important because it has to do with some curse on his family and death, etc) and would just as soon NOT marry this unknown girl mostly because she is the sister of his sworn enemy.

I can hardly follow the convoluted conversations -- maybe I'm particularly stupid but I can't figure out if Brooke really WANTS this or if she DOESN'T and if she thinks she's supposed to be nice to Dominic or to fight with him ... it's incredibly insipid. She's a terrible and unrealistic mix of naive, strong, competent, stupid, wily and confused. He's mostly a jerk.

Entire plot points are described in long quotes from various characters. Dom's "ex-mistress" (as she is referred to by both Brooke and Brooke's maid/nanny) shows up and hangs out in his bedroom with him. Mmmm, OK. Both Brooke and Dom want to breed horses. Ahh sure, that's a nice coincidence. Brooke happens to be a gifted healer (OF COURSE!) and, what a coinkidink! Dom needs healing! All the animals at Dom's estate, including the random wolf, love Brooke -- of course they do. Brooke and Dom are both nice to servants. Yes, that is good to re-emphasize over and over. Right.

It's just ALL over the PLACE. Weird (ie, irrelevant) things are emphasized, language is much too modern, everyone is inconsistent in emotions and actions, etc. I usually read these books in one or two sittings, and this one is so awful I'm reading like one chapter at a time and setting it aside to just give myself a break from its badness. I should just give up.

When I started reading idiotic historical romances, this was the sort of book I suffered through. I don't know why I kept it up; they're all so bad ... then I discovered Madeline Hunter and Mary Balogh and Julia Quinn (and sort of Lisa Kleypas) and realized that historical romances could actually be somewhat WELL WRITTEN with nuanced characters and realistic situations (well, more or less) and plausible conversations. And then I pick up crap like "Make Me Love You" and I'm reminded of all the terrible books I read before.

Not very Johanna-y

── .✦ Famous for her asshole or even cruel heroes, I was confused by Wolf. Despite his wild name, I honestly thought he came off more 'petulant child' than 'cruel hero' (which is what I think was the original aim)

── .✦ Wolf also has zero

I'm a fan of this author. Or more truthfully, of other works by this author. This book though, left me puzzled and underwhelmed and kind of disappointed. The story was weak, the characters uninteresting; and the overall writing style failed to grab my attention. Certain parts of the story felt like it wasn't written by her at all. Not a keeper.

Two stars.

Okay, no structure for this review as I listened to this audiobook a while ago so don't remember particulars but here are my notes along with added, remembered info...

I really enjoyed this book considering it's premise in the historical romance genre was a bit different from others. I loved how the Chick and Dude didn't like each other at first. And I appreciated that the motivations of the Chick to make this relationship work was different from any other HR books I have ever read. While in this mutual dislike, I enjoyed the banter the two MC's had with each other. Even the Dude's grumpiness became somewhat endearing to me in the end. I also enjoyed how some characters were painted as villains to begin with but once you get the full story, you find out that you were lead by gossip or by presumptions. In hindsight, that was a little deep for a HR read.

There's a little mystery in the story that was hinted at but I liked how it all turned out. It was a nice and interesting twist to the story yet one that didn't bog down the main focus of the book which was the relationship between the two MC's.

Narrator was good- I had no complaints.

My note says, "ending part was completely ridiculous" though I have no idea what that refers to, LOL. But I do know that I rated it as 4 stars even with that ending in mind so....

Sorry for the lame ass review but I enjoyed it and will probably listen to again even though I rarely do so.

There were numerous scenes, especially at the beginning of MAKE ME LOVE YOU, which made it nearly impossible to stop reading until I discovered how the situation would play out. Whether it was the reaction of a particular character, or what would take place during an event, I just had to know the all the details before putting the book down for even a moment. Brooke Whitworth is a fascinating heroine, as she hides her spirted temperament from most people by seeming meek and too intimidated to cause problems. But with each peek into her personality, I wished to uncover more. The hero, Dominic Wolfe, repeatedly comes across as gruff, and it did take me some time to actually like him. Yet he also keeps much hidden from those around him, and the more revealed about him, the more I saw him as someone I might in fact like because his actions clearly demonstrated his nature. Johanna Lindsey has created a compelling romance full of startling disclosures and a large number of diverse characters.

After participating in three duels against each other, two enemies find themselves in quite a predicament. England’s Prince Regent wants them punished because rules were not followed, and a penalizing demand has been declared. The sister of Robert Whitworth must wed Lord Dominic Wolfe, thus uniting the two by marriage. If either fails to obey the requirement, then their inherited titles and land will be his. Robert has no affection for his sibling Brooke, and is only concerned with what he will receive one day. Each man comes up with a plan which will hopefully make him the victor.

Dominic thinks the woman sent to him in order to settle the disagreement will be too afraid of the man known as The Wolf to go through with the marriage. But he never would have thought a female could be so feisty with him, plus appear so single-minded in being his wife. Brooke wants her marriage to a stranger to occur so she can finally get away from her uncaring relatives. With Dominic equally determined to see the sister of the man that he despises go back to her home, the battle of wills begins.

Set during a time period I find intriguing, there are balls to attend and women are not usually included in decision-making. Brooke has never been allowed to mingle with her peers, so she abides by her own personal rules and keeps to herself. But what I learned about her as the story progresses is self-preservation can make someone strong. Her comments are often sharp yet also truthful, and I found her banter with Dominic to be hilarious at times. I did laugh loudly more than once, as their retorts were so convincing. Her future husband is often devious when she first arrives, but Brooke cleverly manages to stand up for what she believes again and again. I also got a glimpse of the person whom Dominic once was before misfortune struck, and it let me understand some of his motivations.

MAKE ME LOVE YOU is entertaining with captivating developments and appealing characters. Though there are many secondary characters that stand out, I particularly liked the behavior of Gabriel and Alfreda who were the sources of additional laughs. Johanna Lindsey knows how to skillfully construct engaging historical romances. While not every book by this author is a favorite, her latest story was exactly what I needed at this time, as I smiled a lot and become involved in the lives of her delightful characters.

Well, Johanna Lindsey clearly knows what I dig in books. I may be biased here because she's one of my favorite authors but who cares, right? ;)
I so enjoyed Brooke and Dom's snappy and witty dialogues and their relationship mishaps. But I was very disappointed that in the end Robert turned out to be—how should I phrase it?—not-that-bad-just-misguided guy.
