I picked this edition of the book, because the English edition, when you click on it shows a book by another author with a completely different date of publication. This book focuses on Sarit and his long-term impact on Thai politics. Specifically, it shows how Sarit developed a political philosophy and policy called Thai-style democracy. This form of “democracy” rejected the relationship between the legislative and executive branch advanced in Western systems, because according to Sarit, it led to political instability. The Thai people wanted a “democracy” that advanced unity and order; such a democracy required a strong leader who exercised paternal authority over the people. The author shows how this ideology led to a symbiotic relationship between the military and the monarchy that reinforced traditional social hierarchies and marginalized the people’s involvement in politics.
