Mr. Darcy's Regret

Rate this book
A Pride and Prejudice Variation Novella in the Regency Style

A story of secrets, misunderstandings, and heart-rending regret!

Elizabeth is visiting Charlotte at the parsonage when they are asked to dinner at Rosings. As hard as she tries, Elizabeth cannot be left at home and is forced to come face to face with the odious Fitzwilliam Darcy. With his angry words still ringing in her ears, Elizabeth braces for an evening of the greatest discomfort. But when Mr. Darcy’s sister Georgiana befriends her, Elizabeth begins to wonder if there is more to Mr. Darcy than his pride.

After his proposal goes terribly wrong, Mr. Darcy examines his own prideful nature and realizes that he has acted very badly. Georgiana encourages him to make amends in any way he can, but Mr. Darcy suspects there are some friendships that cannot be repaired, no matter how much love he feels for the clever young woman with the very fine eyes.

A Delightful Confection

Dashwood's little novella fits perfectly into a world where the characters have only now discovered what they want/need and have the courage to reach for it again. That is, perhaps, the hidden discourse in the Canon...courage. this is a perfect little book...the type John Adams (if he had allowed that novels had their place) would have encouraged his son to read..."you are never alone with a book of poetry in your pocket.". This is a great quick read...nice to get beginning, middle and end in one sitting. Four stars leaning to 4.5. proofreading.

Instructions:

Take a copy of P&P - pull it apart by segments Toss them into a box or hat and randomly pull them out - use as your outline. Produce book wait for readers to sit back and say "WTF"

This book absolutely requires you to be familiar with P&P and the characters because it simply jumps in with a scene at Rosings between Georgiana and Darcy. And I know what you are saying Georgiana didn't go to Rosing... exactly.

Beginning at Rosings on the day Lizzy; sans Maria, arrives at Hunsford, apparently Darcy has proposed to her at some unmentioned locale prior to her arrival. She receives a letter from Jane announcing that Bingley has called upon her; goes to Rosings where she meets Georgiana and convinces Darcy to join them at dinner. Plays the pianoforte and annoys lady Catherine. Then the next day she gets a letter from Jane that Lydia has eloped with Wickham. Yes one day later... this is an absurdist mish mash mess.

Sweet, but don't waste your money.

This is a touching rendering of P and p, but it really just reworks events from the original, and as it is just over 50 pages, it is just not worth the money. I got it through Kindle Unlimited, or I would probably ask for my money back. And even though short, has a LOT of typos or wrong words for so short.

Mr. Darcy Regrets

Very sweet tale but I had to give 4 stars due to the editing. Such an interesting Author should hire an Editor because she shouldn't carry all the details herself.

Lovely!

I really enjoyed this short story, Darcy was a dear, Georgiana was wonderful, Charlotte was helpful and Lizzy wasn't as stubborn.

Just the right length for my lunch break!

As a variation of the original this is okay, but only just okay. It could have been much longer but you get the feeling that having started the book, the author couldn't finish it fast enough in case some things were forgotten. In my view quite a lot of things were forgotten. The story jumps about a bit, when time and effort could have made the story longer and better.

If you love Jane Austen's books .....

so much that you would write your own story using her characters, have the same respect for your readers that she did. Use an editor or at the very least, a proofreader. It is not just you, but so many fan fiction writers who have good story ideas, but don't have the writing skills necessary to write coherently. One example, "Mr. Bingley would not be afford the luxury of choosing a woman, even once as handsome as Jane, from such a family." Huh?
You also have Kitty in Brighton in one chapter and then Lydia in another. Learn the difference between to, two, and too. Asking $2.99 for such a short story, poorly written is wrong. And to another reviewer, I seriously doubt that John Adams would have recommended this to his son.

Elizabeth Bennet arrives at the Hunsford Parsonage for her visit, after the awful proposal, after visiting Pemberley, only to meet Georgiana and Darcy at Rosings. Can they solve the problems they have.
Probably could have done with some filling out - only about 50 pages - as it did seem to jump from scene to scene without enough detail at times.

I saw little of great interest in this title. There were a couple of things moved around, but I didn't see why and saw little change in the story from canon based on those changes. Not to be mean, but I seriously kept asking myself "what is the point of this variation?". Why were things changed in order? I just didn't see the author's objective.
