If it’s got Cupid in it, I’m game. I love reading stories about love, obviously, and Cupid is the epitome of love. Well, Kallie Ross introduces readers to not just one cupid but a whole legion of them. Maybe legion isn’t the correct word because all these cupids want to do is make the world a better place: a place full of love. In the center of it all was Evelyn Bowden. Her story of love and helping others find love didn't just mean mortals got a happily-ever-after, but the fairytale ending might extend to immortals.

Evelyn Bowden had an obsession with sugar. As a heavenly being, she couldn’t cuss, so every intended profanity that came out of her mouth was a sugary treat. It was entertaining and added a lot to her character. Also, because heavenly beings can’t cuss, and there were only a handful of mortals in the entire novel, it was a clean read and could easily extend to any age. It was easy to like Evelyn and laugh at and with her from time to time. I would have liked to have been inside her head more, as the book is told in third person, but I got a good read on what to expect from her. She had a big heart and an even bigger appetite and made me crave a brownie or ten.

Third person is such a tricky way to narrate a story. Either you get the characters or you don’t, since you’re not in their heads completely. I thought at the beginning that the entire story would be told in third person limited, with Evelyn as the focus, but it did switch to other characters, like Andel Lambros. I had trouble picking up which character was the focus every time the switch occurred. There were some idiosyncrasies, but the story made sense. I just would have liked for it to have been more distinct. However, I got a good feel of almost every character I met, so there was a deeper connection in some cases.

Andel and Evelyn had a strange relationship. It started as mentee-mentor and moved into friendship. The romance was not heavy, which sounds weird considering this was a book about cupids. They didn’t have a lot of time to concentrate on themselves when they were trying to save the world. However, there were moments when their attraction to each other seemed unprecedented. There is a novella before book one, and I’m going to read it to have a better understand of Evelyn, her life before death, and what she and Andel mean to each other. That being said, because I did not read the novella before diving in, I had some disconnect from the characters toward the beginning, even though past events were explained.

I liked Andel, though. He’s not at the top of my list of male leads, but he and Evelyn made an interesting pair. While I didn’t feel as connected to their romance as I had hoped, I wanted them to end up together. They were sweet. Andel got her addiction to all things sugar, and she understood his occasional uptight behavior. They clicked as friends, and I can’t wait to see how they continue their relationship.

The ending shocked me, partially because I still had over twenty percent left on my Kindle when “To be continued…” popped up. What will happen next? Where will this adventure lead them? A gargoyle searching for love, Roscoe, was too darn adorable, and the suspense that shaded the e-Harmony supernatural edition that was going on kept things light and interesting. I love love, and what better way to celebrate than with a sugar-obsessed millennial with a job to make that happen?

3.5 / 5 Fangs

Unbreakable was a fun, entertaining, and unique book. I thought Kallie created a very interesting world that I was dying to learn more about! I haven't read any books before about cupids, so I thought the concepts of cupids and even gargoyles was very captivating.

The characters in this book were charming and loveable. Andel was one of the major characters of this book, and he made me swoon so many times. Andel was kind, considerate, romantic, and protective. I like him as soon as he was introduced in the book. I am so excited to see more of him in the next book! The main female character, Evelyn, was great. Evelyn was compassionate and dedicated. I also enjoyed her sense of humor! Some of her jokes and sayings seemed a little immature, but I appreciated that she was trying to lighten the mood. I hope that Evelyn will be a little more mature in the next book.

I thought the romance in this book was predictable, but still very sweet. I was shipping Andel and Evelyn from their first interaction! I thought they made a very cute couple. I am interested to see how their relationship will develop in the next book. I hope that their relationship continues to develop positively because my heart would break if they don't end up together!

The plot of this book was entertaining. I enjoyed going on this journey with Eveyln and Andel. I definitely did think there were some slower parts of this book that had me craving some more action. However, thought the author did a pretty good job with pacing overall. I am looking forward to seeing how the events of this book will effect Eveyln and Andel in the sequel.

Overall, I thought Unbreakable was an enjoyable read. I think this is a promising start to a new YA series. I am looking forward to reading more books by this author!

My Thoughts

YA Review

Unbreakable is the first book in the paranormal/supernatural romance, called the Cupid Chronicles from author Callie Ross. I thought Unbreakable was a very cute story, if not a little predictable, but very cute nonetheless. I am very interested in continuing this series. One of the things I found to be the most interesting is that rather than a single character that takes on the role of Cupid, as is the case in classic mythology, cupids are a whole race of creatures tasked with helping people, both mortal and immortal beings, fall in love.

Unbreakable is told between the two main characters of Eveyln and Andel . I really enjoyed both of them, and I can't wait to see what is going to happen next, but be warned because this one does end on a cliffhanger. I am going to break this mini review down into the pros and cons of Unbreakable.

Pros: this is a sweet story with great characters that I really want to see more of. Kallie Ross also had a very interesting take on cupids.

Cons: the book was a bit predictable in parts and a bit sludgy in parts. I wanted to pick up the pacing in more than one part of the story.

Bottom line: This is a cute start to what looks like a promising series. I am hoping book two moves a long a little quicker.

I’ve read books by a variety of fantasy creatures – vampires, werewolves, faeries, worlds with kings and queens that can do magic, trolls, aliens, witches and wizards, angels and demons, Gods and mortals. And I can now add cupids onto that list!

Unbreakable is the first book in Kallie Ross’ new series. It’s about Cupids! I was really looking forward to reading this, something new and very interesting than the usual Fae or vampire books. Our main character is Evelyn, a brand-spanking new Cupid. You can only become a Cupid by dying in the place of someone you love, where you are given the chance of immortality and become a supernatural with the rarest ability – one that allows her to pierce both mortals and immortals with arrows possessing everlasting love.

Evelyn was a very relatable character. She was only in college when she died in place of her boyfriend, and she still feels like she has so much of life left to live. One of the more unique attributes of being a Cupid means you’re not allowed to swear, and so whenever Evelyn tried swearing she’d end up shouting a dessert instead, and I thought it was a very exceptional (and hilarious) way to avoid foul language in this book. It also tied into Evelyn’s love of sweet foods and how whenever she got stressed, or angry, or upset, she would immediately bake cookies and eat the whole lot at once, or open up a carton of ice cream and not move until it was completely eaten. Considering how much of a sweet tooth I am, I completely understood where Evelyn was coming from and made the book much more relatable.
Of course, she does that clichéd YA main character of being special and unlike any Cupid before her – she can shoot arrows at immortals, not just mere mortals! A major storyline is Evelyn trying to discover why this is, and then helping a Gargoyle, an immortal creature, match with his true love. I didn’t mind it too much, however – it was still well-written.

I really enjoyed the characters of Evelyn and Andel. I thought together they had a really cute bond. They started off as mentor and student, where Andel trained Evelyn in the ways of being a Cupid. The author made the transition of mentor/student to friends really smoothly and then they transitioned from friends to romantically involved. The author handled it incredibly well. I was able to believe when they were mentor and student (and had some very funny interactions as well) and I never felt disconcerted when their relationship stopped being professional and they got very close. It was very believable that they were slowly but surely falling for each other, and I really enjoyed it. Especially as Andel was a totally sourpuss at the beginning, but Evelyn slowly brought out the smile that was buried so deep within him.

However, I don’t believe the author needed to use a third person narrative when writing this; I think I would’ve felt even closer to the characters if it had been in first person. If the author had even done every other chapter in someone else’s POV; we’d get a closer and better feel of each one. Despite this, however, I still really liked all the characters as well as the story. The rules of being a Cupid, and how and when you are supposed to shoot an arrow at a couple were really inventive.

Instead of being given two random people and forcing them to fall in love by shooting an arrow at them, they actually had to be involved in the couple’s lives and help them get together, and only when they were truly falling for each other could a Cupid shoot an arrow at them – when the Cupid heard their love through music and felt an urge that they could not ignore. Otherwise it wouldn’t work. I thought that was really well done and I loved seeing Evelyn become involved in her clients’ lives and be their friend to help set them up with their true love.

That’s the main storyline here – introducing us to the world of Cupids, seeing Evelyn and Andel’s relationship blossom, and seeing both Evelyn and Andel attempt to make two different couples fall in love.

Overall, if you enjoy supernatural stories and are curious about Cupids, then I would recommend you give this book a go. It’s a great first book in a series by Kallie Ross.

I love history and legends reimagined. There is something that lures me in about a story that takes something I know and creates a world that is vibrant and alive today. Kallie Ross does that with her Cupid Chronicles. Unbreakable, the first in this new series, is genius. Ross takes stories and legends of the Cupids and breathes new live into those tales, creating a world that is a brilliant blend of modern day and the past.

So when you think Cupids you think the cherub angels that fly around the strike people with heart arrows of true love. Well you won't find any cherubs around here. Ross brings a certain level of badass to this series. The Cupids are made up of people who have sacrificed themselves for true love. Talk about epic. They train to both pierce a couple with a golden arrow and defend that love at all costs. I love that this warrior mentality is brought to life in the Cupid world. It gives a degree of mystery and brilliance to every character you meet, knowing they paid the ultimate sacrifice and wondering what exactly it was.

Evelyn is a fun and genuine heroine. She is quirky and so entertaining. Her new reality is one that shakes her to the core and to watch her struggle through it is both endearing and authentic. She is still adjusting to her new role and even more things start to churn around her. Andel has been mentoring her and their friendship grounds Evelyn in her new purpose. I love the camaraderie these two have and the way that work together. Their new feelings toward one another allows the story to add another layer to what is happening and gives the romantic in us all something to smile about.

The world building in this book is fantastic. Ross does a great job of blending the New York I know with the supernatural world I am learning about. We meet faries, trolls, Cupids, Gargoyles, and so many new people. There are moments of triumph and moments of pain and loss. There is so much to be learned in this series and it leaves you wondering what is next and who can be trusted. I am in love with this new series and cannot wait to see what happens next.

Interesting book

This book was an interesting read about the Cupids and how they are living their lives on earth. I enjoyed the story of the main character and her new love interest who is also a cupid like her.

Kallie Ross weaves a story that is both unique and entertaining. If you are a fan of anything remotely mythological, or want to challenge typical ideas and jump into something completely original you will love this novel.

Cupid.

You know all the typical ideas about a cupid, but you honestly have it all wrong. That si the way they want it though, because the reality is far more complicated.

If you get a chance, read Evelyn before you read this. It is a novella that gives you Evelyn's beginning story. I think I would have been very confused without it.

Evelyn Bowden is a cupid and she is far more special than she even can comprehend.  Her place in the war is going to be a game changer. She will make decisions that impact everyone and it is going to be a wild ride.

I felt the novel was a little slow to start, but once you finish the novella and jump into this, it does pick up and you will want to see where it goes. The characters are super fun and the secondary characters make this novel.

Once I became invested and it hooked my interest the read went fairly quickly and I couldn't wait to see where it ending. It leaves you excited for the next novel, but gives you just enough answers that you aren't sorely confused.

Falling in love is rarely easy, but the first book in the Cupid Chronicles shows that the twists and trials can be even more numerous and challenging for those who's job it is to help others fall in love. Evelyn, officially paired as a team with her mentor Andel by the Elders now that Evelyn is a full Cupid (I recommend reading her novella before this book!), is given her first case. However, not only does she have to play matchmaker with her charges as well as help Andel with his, but she's also still grieving moving on from her significant other (whom she had to let go in the novella), and simultaneously handle all the confrontations that arise as a result of the supernatural community's curiosity (both in the stare-at-her, and in the make-deals-with/ransom/kidnap kind of ways) of her arrows' possibly unique ability to pierce supernaturals' hearts. Although this makes for an eventful book, I found all these overlapping, though seemingly unrelated, plotlines to be very confusing. The cliffhanger too appears very suddenly and left me reeling, right at the moment when I was most lost. The banter between Evelyn, Andel and their new friends, Evelyn's funny quirks, the budding romances, and the danger are all intriguing, and I'll likely read book 2 when it releases, but I hope that the author manages to clear up and/or intertwine all of the various conflicts from this novel.

I really loved the note that Kallie Ross put at the beginning of the book. Definitely use her advice and jump to Evelyn and read those chapters first (at the end of the book). It will help with the main book. Who is Evelyn and what has happened to her life? What has her coming back home to New Orleans, to the Jackson Square area? Who is Andel? Finding out about Evelyn and what her new job is and what she has to do made my heart break for her. When Evelyn's world shifts, after finishing up business in New Orleans, what has happened? What immortal group has come to the Elders to ask for Evelyn's help? What do they want? Who are Roscoe, Jude and Leo? Who is Kalan? Who is the Queen? What is this about a troll? What happens when Evelyn shoots the troll? Who is Ben? What happens when Andel is taken? Who has him? You're going to have to read this book to see just how funny Evelyn becomes once she becomes an immortal with Andel's help! Her sweet need as a human comes into play in a really huge way that had me giggling more times than not when Evelyn got upset about things. This was a really fun book to read! I cannot wait for the second book to come out!

Fans of Michelle Madow and Cassandra Clare's paranormal romance adventures will love this beginning to a new series that features a snarky, strong heroine who left her human life behind when she became an immortal Cupid, a heavenly warrior sent on assignments to assist love. Her powers are unlike any other Cupid's, however, and she needs to know why. Prophecies, adventure, mystery - oh, and giving up her humanity, well, she did that to save the life of her true love. It doesn't get more romantic than this.

Evelyn didn’t realize her story was just beginning when she became a Cupid. It didn’t occur to her that she was a special Cupid. One that all the supernatural community would be clamoring for her. She is sent on a mission to help a Gargoyle get his eternal love. With her mentor, Andel, by her side she begins to see that being a Cupid is much more complicated then shooting arrows a people in love. Can Evelyn complete her job and manage to keep herself and all the other safe or will she be forced to make a choice on who she fights for?

This was a very interesting book. I loved the cupids and other supernaturals. Evelyn and Andel were great characters. The world within the real world was fantastic. The storytelling was fantastic. There were a lot of fun parts to this book but my favorite was clearly the lack of Evelyn’s ability to curse and her love of chocolate. It really gave her an authenticity that a book like this could lose just because its got paranormal components. I can’t wait to see what is next in this series. I think this could be a really fun and suspenseful one to follow.
