Seventeen-year-old Katie is overwhelmed when she lands a job as a nanny for Premier League soccer player Brett Ballentine and his wife Kassie’s kids. Arriving at the Ballentine mansion in London, Katie feels as though she’s living in a magazine. She’s got a whole floor of the house to herself, her own car, and the inside scoop on Britain’s most notorious celebrity couple. But there is a downside. Katie has to learn to keep her mouth shut when it comes to some of Kassie’s strange and desperate behavior. And Brett is like the ice man—he barely acknowledges her. As time goes on the "happy couple" reveal their true colors, and the true state of their volatile marriage. Kassie has a twisted secret, and Brett’s getting too fond of "playing away." Katie feels like she and the kids are caught in the middle of a war zone, culminating in a shocking revelation about Brett. But while Katie struggles with her predicament, a budding young photographer snaps the picture the tabloids have been waiting for and catapults herself into the limelight.
Laurie Depp was born and brought up in the heart of the city in London, growing up amongst a varied mix of people - from market traders to city traders - and with nightlife to die for. She has been gathering material for her writing since her early teens.
It's rumored that Laurie is a distant cousin of that other famous Depp, Johnny, though Laurie will only say 'no comment' when asked.
Consequences is Laurie's first published sequence of books for the teen market, and though she is often reclusive and prone to agoraphobia, she is occasionally spotted dining around her 'manor', wearing dark glasses and a cute blonde wig.
This was a fun read and I'm sure I would have ate it up as a young teenager. I like the idea of stories which show you the consequences of your actions, but sometimes I wasn't so keen on the character of Katie. Maybe it's because - despite also being a British girl in my late teens - I felt like Katie acted rather immaturely, like the situation with her boyfriend. Some parts were a little predictable and I figured out who'd told the press about Kassie and who was selling the stuff from the house. Overall, it was a quick, easy read and pretty fun, and it had a message, so I'd be happy for my (hypothetical) teenage daughter to read this! I probably wouldn't have read it if Hope hadn't recommended it to me, and I suppose I'll read the others in the series whenever Hope gets around to giving me them. 6/10
really like this book! i usually take a few chapters to get fully stuck into a book but this book was so easy to read and the layout of newspaper articles was so nice! defo recommend... really good book, you never want to put it down!!!
Although the scenario of Katie acquiring a highly responsible nannying job for a celebrity couple at 18 is rather implausible, this book is such an entertaining read, with well developed and unpredictable characters.
3.5 ⭐ The writing in this book was pretty surface-level. It might have worked better as a diary-style narrative. That said, it was a lighthearted, easy read. My only gripe was the physical copy, which was stiff and made reading a bit unpleasant.
I've had this series on my shelf for the longest time and I have finally decided to read them. This is the first book in the series and is about Katie who is a nanny for a famous couple and their children. The story follows the life of Katie and what her life is like with the family.
This was a quick read and was a decent story. Parts of the story were predictable but the I like the idea behind the story. I think this would be a great series for younger readers as each book has a message to them.
The characters weren't particularly original and neither was the plot, but it was still enjoyable to read none the less. The ending builds it up for the next book in the series which is going to be about the photographer who takes the picture at the end.
