Van Jensen is the acclaimed author of the award-winning GODFALL trilogy (Grand Central). The sci-fi/thriller genre mashup series is in development for TV with Academy Award winner Ron Howard attached to direct and Jensen serving as executive producer.
Jensen was born and raised in the farm country of Western Nebraska where he wrote and drew stories as soon as he could hold a pencil. He became a newspaper crime reporter, then a magazine editor, and eventually an author of comic books and graphic novels. He has written some of the world’s biggest characters, including James Bond, Godzilla, and The Flash, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern for DC Comics. His original graphic novels include ARCA (IDW), Two Dead (Simon & Schuster/Gallery 13), Two Dead (Dark Horse), and Pinocchio, Vampire Slayer (Top Shelf/IDW).
The Mars Family base rests below Denver International Airport. It consists of a series of descending levels, nine in total.
The first and second levels house basic Family operations, mostly staffed by non-Family members and nonleadership Family members, known as "Cogs."
The third level is home to "the Eyes," technicians who spend every hour of every day scouring endless streams of video surveillance collected around the world, looking for threats.
The fourth level is a barracks for Family operatives.
The fifth level holds "the Grays," a group of cryptids, often called "little green men," who use their telepathic powers to hide the existence of the Families.
The sixth level is home to classrooms for Family children as they train to become Seniors.
The seventh level holds the armory, a repository of the deadliest and most enigmatic weapons the world has ever seen.
The eighth level holds the offices of the Seniors, the Family leaders who plan all major operations.
The ninth level is home to the Elders and Priests. And ... other things. But you don't have clearance for that.
This is not a series for those with a mind towards conspiracies. Hidden families rule everything we do, have advanced alien technology, and plot against each other with no regard for the cost of human life.
However, there is an old prophecy. Dismissed by the newer generations of the families but still held close by the Elders and the Priests, when an attack occurs against one of the families, it seems there is some truth to the tales.
With the families in panic, the elders and priests gather in neutral territory. With the blaming and incriminations in full swing, they soon find themselves under attack once again from the mysterious enemy. Members of lower tiers now have to step up and on doing so discover the extent of the prophecies and what it means to humanity as a whole.
Meanwhile, secrets of the Nine Families have been found by a journalist who uses her underground radio station to transmit the truth to the world. An unexpected additional problem for the Nine Families leaving their mind scrubbers with extra work to do.
Very busy and I fear the series may be rushed and may not actually finish. 3 stars.
Good color artwork, dark horse freebie. The nine families are publicly exposed. The enemy reveals themselves as well. The fantasy beasts run wild. Things do not look good.
This issue we get a look at the Preserve where some of the worlds rarest and deadliest creatures are hidden away for their own safety. But not all are happy being stuck behind walls and with the Nine Prophecies starting to come true more then a few see it as time to break free. I'm interested to see how this will affect future issues.
