Head far into the future of long ago! A new evil has arisen, shattering a resurgent Empire and seeking to put an end to the Jedi once and for all. The Sith Lord Darth Krayt sits on the throne. Only one hope remains — the last remaining heir to the Skywalker legacy. Cade may be strong in the Force — but years after a tragedy, he is a bounty hunter, working with Jariah Syn and Deliah Blue. When he reluctantly finds himself at the center of galactic turmoil, Cade may be forced to embrace his heritage. But will the path on which he embarks be one of redemption, or damnation?
John Ostrander is an American writer of comic books. He is best known for his work on Suicide Squad, Grimjack and Star Wars: Legacy, series he helped create.
Originally an actor in a Chicago theatre company, Ostrander moved into writing comics in 1983. His first published works were stories about the character "Sargon, Mistress of War", who appeared the First Comics series Warp!, based on a series of plays by that same Chicago theatre company. He is co-creator of the character Grimjack with Timothy Truman, who originally appeared in a back up story in the First Comics title, Starslayer, before going on to appear in his own book, again published by First Comics in the mid 1980s. First Comics ceased publication in 1991, by which time Ostrander was already doing work for other comics companies (his first scripts for DC Comics were published in 1986).
Prior to his career in comic books, Ostrander studied theology with the intent of becoming a Catholic priest, but now describes himself as an agnostic. His in-depth explorations of morality were later used in his work writing The Spectre, a DC Comics series about the manifestation of the wrath of God. His focus on the character's human aspect, a dead police detective from the 1930s named Jim Corrigan, and his exploration of moral and theological themes brought new life to a character often thought of as impossible to write. He has also worked on Firestorm, Justice League, Martian Manhunter, Manhunter, Suicide Squad, and Wasteland for DC.
Legacy may very well be the most underrated and unknown story arc in the entireStar Wars library. In a way, it's pretty easy to understand and see why it seems to fall through the cracks in almost every Star Wars related discussion. Think about it: you have a weird plot premise, set almost 2 centuries after the final events of Return of the Jedi and while it's been pretty much the norm for the literary field of Star Wars to go back in time multiple decades and centuries, it's never been a big idea to shoot forward so far. I suppose that's why Legacy caused such a stir among fans when it was first announced and why, even up to today, despite mainly positive reviews and a cult-like following, it's usually glossed over and almost hardly mentioned.
Thank god I managed to find a copy and give it a shot because, in all honesty, Legacy may very well be my all-time favorite Star Wars graphic novel and easily ranks among the best of any other Star Wars story.
Yes, the idea behind it is a little strange, what with the whole Yuuzhan Vong war and a new Imperial Alliance (afterall this was written almost a decade before TFA) but a new threat from the Sith and their collaboration with that new Imperial power makes for some deep dynamics that haven't been seen since the plot of Revenge of the Sith. Legacy is also incredibly dark and probably one of the more violent storylines in all of Star Wars lore. Unlike the new, safer, Marvel canon, Dark Horse was never afraid to push the envelope, even in its more successful, profitable franchises. Thankfully, Legacy never attempts to do the stupid things we've seen in the 2017 Marvel iteration which made for a much better story and experience and proves that Star Wars doesn't always have to follow the same, well trod, comfortable path it's made for itself.
My only complaint? Having to wait till the end of January 2018 for the next collected issue.
I love Star Wars. I am not even going to try and hide the fact that I am biased towards it. I particularly have a love for all of the old Star Wars Legends, especially around The Old Republic era. I however, surprisingly, have not read any of the Legends material set in the Legacy era.
Legacy Volume 1 is set 130 years after the battle of Endor. A lot of important events have taken place since then (which is briefly touched on in the opening crawl), but fortunately you do not require too much knowledge to enjoy this graphic novel. We follow Cade with his crew, Darth Krayt with his Sith and a few other important side characters.
The storyline was extremely well put together. Everything flowed and went logically from one issue to the next. As I mentioned just before, while some extremely important events have occurred prior to this, you do not have had to read any other material since everything is explained to a basic level so that you are able to enjoy this story.
The art style is right up my alley. I personally love the balance of the colours and the layout of each panel and page. Nothing was too overbearing but yet the important aspects were highlighted.
I would highly recommend Legacy Volume 1 to any Star Wars fan, new or old.
As usual, these comics featured excellent artwork, and were definitely eye candy! It's also fun to go way past the original trilogy, featuring characters that, as far as I know, were never in any Expanded Universe prose novels.
Unfortunately, these issues were also a bit oversexed. Too many female characters--on both the Jedi and Sith sides--dressed immodestly, and some of the guys were seen shirtless as well. Some of the sequences were a bit freaky, too. So, this was a mixed bag.
Damn. Though not cannon, this is an epic story arc. Though part of the overall franchise, it definitely stands on it’s own.
A heck of a lot happens within this single compendium and I’m here for it. The characters are compelling, the plot intriguing and twists surprising. It also has some pretty awesome, complicated female characters which is great.
I’m so glad I picked it up and definitely recommend it to any Star Wars fan - even those with perhaps passing interests.
Note: The cover is irritatingly misleading as the characters depicted are very minor and hold little relevance for the story as a whole.
A few years before Disney bought Lucasfilm and released a Star Wars movie trilogy about the Dark Side destroying Luke Skywalker's Jedi Order, a faction derived from Palpatine's Empire reconquering the Galaxy/fighting a scattered Resistance, and a Skywalker family scion struggling to maintain balance in the Force, Dark Horse Comics released a Star Wars comic series about the Dark Side destroying Luke Skywalker's Jedi Order, a faction derived from Palpatine's Empire reconquering the Galaxy/fighting a scattered Resistance, and a Skywalker family scion struggling to maintain balance in the Force. To Star Wars EU/Legends fans, the "Legacy" comics are a much preferable take on this similar plotline to the polarizing Sequel Trilogy due to Legacy's much more mature and grittier take of the Galaxy, and for being less of a direct remake of the Original Trilogy.
I myself am mostly ambivalent about Legacy, at least as far as the first collection goes. I remember reading a few issues back as a kid/middle schooler but honestly not caring too much about it to continue. As an adult reading this a few years ago that feeling mostly remained the same. While other adult Star Wars fans might think a mature and dark & gritty is a sign of quality, I don't always agree with that. With Legacy I thought it could be a little too humorless and "grimdark" to really appeal to me (and evidently my teenage self). Likewise, while not being as derivative of the Original Trilogy as say The Force Awakens, Legacy is a bit closer to the Sequel Trilogy in this respectives. Examples include a Skywalker saving a Force-Sensitive Princess, the new Imperial factions using Stormtroopers (and without changing their armor design somewhat like Disney had), the Sith being dominated by both a figurative Darth Vader stand-in (powerful and armored warlord with lots of health problems) and aliens that have Darth Maul's tattoos, etc.
While I rip into Legacy, I can't deny there is some appeal to it. The artwork for most of the comics in this first collection is the same style as Dark Horse's "Republic" comics which I enjoyed so much as a kid. Additionally there were some plot developments and even twists that I enjoyed (as much as I rag on the Darth Vader stand-in, the reveal of his original identity is a good one if you read the Republic comics). Finally, while some of the story beats are a beat derivative of both the Original and Prequel trilogies, both the added variations and the content make them a bit more engaging than the Sequel Trilogy at its worst.
While I still think Star Wars Legacy is a bit overhyped and trying too hard to appeal to edgelor- mature Star Wars fans, this first collection ended up being entertaining enough to continue checking out Legacy.
Original Series Retro Review May 2016: This is all considered non-canon now and falls under the category now listed as Legends or alternate timeline. Personally, this timeline will be canon but even without factoring that personal opinion in, I loved seeing the far future of the Star Wars family names we have all come to love and hate. If you are a Star Wars fan, I highly recommend checking out this graphic novel series. If you are not a SW fan but love science fiction and graphic novels, I recommend checking it out, it is set up far enough in the future that having no knowledge of SW characters really will not hamper you enjoyment.
Series Reread Review April 2026: I always love going back to this future-set series. Yes, it's non-canon and yes, I enjoy Disney's timeline but the original SWEU that is now under the Legends umbrella will always be what comes to mind when I think "canon". However you look at it, if you're a SW fan then I'm sure you'll love it too. With alternate timelines and multiverse being a popular avenue for Hollywood in recent years, if it helps to look at Legends like that, then do so, it's kind of what I do, after all, I spent too much money and time invested in the original SWEU to just forget it. There are family names you'll recognize and new ones, put them all together and you have an incredibly entertaining future story. Outside the SW universe, graphic novels are not really my thing but I do love them here and though I wouldn't have minded experiencing this era in full-length novels, graphic novels fits them to a tee especially for those who don't have the time to invest in novel re-reads.
Star Wars is my favorite franchise. When reading Star Wars comics it makes me untrusting of the talent and ability that artists have to create a new future timeline. I can't say that this graphic novel is better than the movies, but it definitely allows you to understand what future Skywalkers are up to. When reading you instantly are thrown into the action with the backstory of Cade Skywalker. There are, however, a couple of dull parts where side characters are discussing how to get a better edge on the war and win against the empire. This is my opinion, but I prefer action over negotiations of tactics and predictable military strategies. I would most definitely improve upon the action part of the comic. More scenes with the main characters and more action. The comic at some points breaks away to another storyline that eventually connects, but during these cutaways, it leaves the reader bored and almost skimming the material to get back to the main story line, or eventually putting down the book and doing something else. The main story just goes by so fast and the side story takes forever to get through.Overall, I would recommend this to someone who is a Star Wars fan and wants to see a possible future outcome of the Skywalker legacy. Unfortunately, it is hard for me to call this a page turner. If you like military negotiations and side character stories, then yes, this is the book for you.
Ooohh, ✨THE DRAMA✨ It’s absolutely not that good to earn 4 stars, but I was so enjoying this. Cade is the most pitiful drama queen I’ve ever seen in Star Wars (Anakin is a master at keeping his shit together, compared to this guy). He looks like a homeless and is actively trying to kill himself every now and then, until Luke fucking Skywalker shows up and tells him he’s stupid (and some other people too, always to tell Cade he’s stupid and I love it). Also, I have no idea why any girl is interested in him, but the drama in this aspect is impeccable as well. Like, he’s got Deliah but then, there’s this bat shit crazy Sith girl. I mean 😂 I think the best choice for poor Cade would be to just hook up with Syn. The most unproblematic relationship he has, but it’s 00’s comic so they didn’t invent gays yet. Aaaand, speaking of 00’s - WHY every woman that appears has to have boobs and belly out? LIKE EVERY ONE. And Cade’s mother most of them all. I mean, I’ve got a lot of emotions, it’s so bad and good at the same time. Again, I love drama queens in Skywalker family, and Cade is doing a great homage to Anakin. Except, grandpa wouldn’t approve of having an affair :c
This book represents a serious effort to tell new stories in the Star Wars universe without relying on the primary movie cast of characters. And sure, we still have a Skywalker at the center of the action, he's not your typical Skywalker and one that has run away from his family legacy and has instead focused on his own less-ideal path in life.
It's a tricky story to get into since there's just so much that's different about the setting ranging from the Sith once again ascendant in significant numbers to the remnant of the Empire somehow being the good guys here and even having their own Imperial Jedi Knights. But you have to appreciate the sort of bravery needed to put a story like this together.
Pleasantly surprised with how well this accounts for the war with the Vong, with ambitious Moffs, with the troubled legacy of the Jedi, and with the cursed inheritance that is the Skywalker name. Loses points for using busty women as props / too many uninspired panels / Cade is hot but boring, but overall has great pacing, good (at the low bar of SW-grade at least) dialogue, great tie-ins with the huge universe history, strong and surprising twists a-plenty, and just a plain old refreshing take on an exhausted tale that wrote itself into so many strange corners (that they can for the most part ignore given the time jump). I’m really looking forward to finishing the next two collected offerings.
The fact that this series is OOP is a damned crime. This first volume was just excellent from start to finish, and I absolutely need to continue the story of Cade Skywalker and crew. I really, REALLY hope we see an omnibus of this run in the future, or, at the very least, a reprint of these epic collections. I need to find volume two, but it looks like I’ll be stuck going the digital route as it’s even more expensive than the first volume and my library doesn’t have it. Either way, I need to continue this one. Just a fantastic Star Wars story that felt both familiar and unique at the same time. Highly, highly recommend this one to Star Wars fans.
I honestly don't know why the fandom menace got mad at the Sequel Trilogy for "Undoing all the work of the OT heroes", when we've seen the Legends EU do it over and over again. The biggest example being the Legacy comics. The Empire's back, the Sith are back, there's another Jedi purge, and Luke's descendent has turned his back on the force and is a junkie bounty hunter. So that's not spitting on the legacy of Luke, Leia, Han, and Lando, but Rey Skywalker is? Yeah ok.
As it is, this is...ok so far. At the least it's better than the Denningverse. (Also, I do love the idea that Ben and Vestara still ended up getting together and having children, despite Troy Denning's best efforts.)
Incredible stuff. Height of Legends creativity with huge payoffs if you’ve read the NJO (Vong!!). Set 130 years after Return of the Jedi this really has a chance to flex and have fun with a new cast of characters while also remembering major galactic events that shaped the galaxy for this time period. Very fun. Love the imperial knights. A perfect mix of praetorian guard, imperial guard, Jedi, and inquisitor. With white lightsabers and battle armor. So dope. Also, the Sith are Vong’ed out. Makes them look so great. This really is just incredibly fun. Can’t wait for more!
This graphic novel was very enjoyable to read and graphically intreting as it doesent cover the most popular star wars story arc. to sum it all up cade is on the run from jedi and doesent want to be involved with anyone with his crew then has a tough choise on witch side to take. This was very easy to follow along and decently intresting.
My opinion on this book is that the art is good but the plot is a little dull. This books art is amazing with all the small setails they put into them but like most star wars books the plot is the same. A fight between good and evil forces I cant go more in depth without spoiling it so ill stop there. I would recomend this book to people that like clasic star wars plots
All Star Wars is kinda dumb. It’s what I love about it. And I love everything from Legends to the Acolyte. I simply cannot hate, I am built different.
But the early 2000s cheese in Legacy? Omg it is just a diff kind of bouquet. I love this series so much. Later volumes get into some side quests that keep them from being 5 stars, but this club has it all: Huttese pirate-biker talk, nonsensical sexual skullduggery, edgy drug trips, Luke and Vader, Yuuzhan Vong, an Acklay, midriffs…
Really good story about a future that will never happen now the Disney owns Star Wars. But still very good story it’s now a Legend storyline or a What if? Or elseworld. Regardless it’s entertaining so enjoy it.

This started awesome and ended absolutely perfect.
The final arc, "Claws of the Dragon," was stellar, seeing Krayt's entire origin, the culmination of all of our character arcs, and Cade's greatest moment yet.
"That which can heal can also break." - Kol Skywalker.
This would've made such a good series instead of the things we have been given. Still connects to the Skywalkers but doesn't over do it and isn't some overpowered EU slopfest
