Note: Before marriage, RN used her maiden surname ‘Daddanaala Ranganayakamma’ in her works, and after the marriage, she adopted the surname ‘Muppala’ as was the convention. After the separation, she stopped using the adopted surname and began to write without any surname: simply as ‘Ranganayakamma’

రంగనాయకమ్మ సుప్రసిద్ధ మార్కిస్టు, స్త్రీవాద రచయిత్రి. ఈమె రచనల్లో రామాయణాన్ని మార్క్సిస్టు దృక్పధంతో విమర్శిస్తూ రాసిన రామాయణ విషవృక్షం ఒకటి. స్త్రీవాద రచయిత కావడం వల్ల 'పురుష వ్యతిరేకి'గానూ, రామాయణ విషవృక్షం రాయడం వల్ల 'బ్రాహ్మణ వ్యతిరేకి' గానూ ఈమెకి పేరు.

రంగనాయకమ్మ, పశ్చిమ గోదావరి జిల్లా బొమ్మిడి గ్రామములో 1939లో జన్మించారు. ఈమె తాడేపల్లిగూడెంలో ఉన్నత పాఠశాలలో చదివి 1955లో ఎస్.ఎస్.ఎల్.సీ ఉత్తీర్ణురాలయ్యారు. ఈమె తల్లితండ్రులు ఉన్నత చదువులకొరకు దూరప్రాంతములోని కళాశాలకు పంపించి చదివించలేని కారణముగా ఈమె విద్యాభ్యాసము అంతటితో ఆగిపోయింది.

రంగనాయకమ్మ 1958లో సాంప్రదాయకముగా పెద్దలు కుదిర్చిన పెళ్లి చేసుకొన్నారు. కానీ విరుద్ధ భావాలతో కొనసాగలేక 1970లో ఆ వివాహము నుండి బయటపడ్డారు. అప్పటి నుండి తన కంటే వయసులో పది సంవత్సరాలు చిన్నవాడు, తన అభిమాని, పాఠకుడు అయిన బీ.ఆర్.బాపూజీ (అలియాస్ గాంధీ) తో కలసి నివసిస్తున్నారు.

తన మొదటి రచనల్లో తండ్రి ఇంటి పేరుతో 'దద్దనాల' రంగనాయకమ్మగా పాఠకులకి పరిచయం. 1958 నుంచి 1970 మధ్య కాలంలో 'ముప్పాళ' రంగనాయకమ్మగా పరిచయం. మొదటి వివాహం నుంచీ బయటపడిన తరువాత తన పేరు నుంచీ 'ముప్పాళ' తీసేసి కేవలం 'రంగనాయకమ్మ'గా పరిచయం.

A story narrated primarily through letters, this book is a nice read for the many love letters. My edition had footnotes from the author revisiting the book several decades later and expressing her altered opinions on various aspects of the book - the characters, descriptions and dialogues. These were a bit distracting because they hinder the flow of the story but as they are given as footnotes, one can revisit them in a re-read. The author also gave in the appendix various types of conclusions to the story that would make it align with her current views.

Published in 1959, this book is definitely modern for its times in terms of the freedom the characters possess. In that way, this book portrays only a small upper middle class section of the society. The central character in the story appears to be deeply flawed (the author agrees with this) which puts the story at a disadvantage.

Loved the author's critique of the novel in this 8th edition. The footnotes, foreword, afterword are all though-provoking.
