A remote island castle haunted by tragedy and superstition becomes the last refuge for a young governess with dark secrets of her own....
She appeared one day out of nowhere. Beautiful, refined and elusive, she seems totally enthralled with the isolated isle of Trelay. But her employer, Gabriel MacFeagh, Viscount Dunevin, can't help wondering who Nell Harte really is -- and why she is willing to work as his daughter's governess. After all, it is most obvious that she has heard the rumors about the day his wife disappeared -- the day his young daughter descended into a terrible silence that she has not yet broken. But Nell must never discover the real reason why he is estranged from his mute, lonely child -- even if he has to deny the most precious love he has ever known....

This is a re-release from the Ladies Least Likely series, first published in 2000. Somehow I managed to jump from the first book in this series straight to the fourth, and now I simply must read the in-between! All of these tales are shrouded in myth, mystery and a little magic with a hint of danger, a lot of local flavor & folklore, and a hauntingly beautiful romance.
This is the story of Eleonor & Gabriel. She’s a duke’s heiress looking for time and space to clear her mind after discovering a devastating family secret. He’s a widower and father to a young girl who lost her voice the day her mother died. He’s also the laird of an isolated Scottish isle and his family has been haunted by an age old curse, or so he believes. The locals do as well, naming him the devil himself and warning Nell away when she decides to become his daughter’s governess.
He keeps everyone at arm’s length, his heart locked, convinced the curse will claim whomever he loves. She’s determined to find his girl’s voice, solve the mystery and prove those rumormongers wrong. Add a breathtaking island, an old castle, a mother hen housekeeper, an unexpected villain and a handful of colorful islanders, and you get an intriguing and compelling grumpy-sunshine slow burn romance with a lot of sizzle and some very nice steam. It's a simple story with a great eye for detail, beautifully written, complex characters and a clever plot that only reveals itself in the very end. I loved it start to finish!
Trying to fill her role as a responsible lady, Lady Eleanor Wycliffe informs her brother Christian, Duke of Westover, that she will accept Lord Richard Hartley’s proposal. He refuses. She persists, and asks for an explanation. Christian reveals a mystery regarding her parentage; Nell is simultaneously thunderstruck and devastated. She leaves home in the shadow of the night bound for the Highlands. Laird Gabriel MacFeagh has posted for a governess after a few have resigned. Nell answers the ad. Although dubious of Nell’s background and identity, Gabriel has no other options but to hire her. Nell isn’t the only one with secrets. To prevent those whom he loves from suffering tragedy, Gabriel has withdrawn from his 9 yr old daughter, who has been mute since her mother’s death.
The basis of his withdrawal is a curse that has been placed upon his family. The author does a fabulous job of engaging us in the unraveling the mysteries on the Isle of Trelay. Readers will be drawn more to poor little Juliana than the budding romance between her dad and Nell. There are numerous characters that are richly described and we are wooed into loving them all. Read how Nell draws Juliana out of her shell and how her love for Gabriel manages to connect him back to his daughter. Will Nell get closer to the circumstances surrounding Juliana’s mom’s death? Will that put her in danger? Enjoy this poignant and tender novel that’s worth rereading. 5 stars 🌟 +++! I have received an ARC from Booksprout and I am leaving an unbiased review voluntarily.

White Mist. My fellow readers. This book is incredibly beautiful. I love the main characters a lot. There are stories that I have read that is fantastic. This book is one of the. The strong emotions and loving feelings that comes across from Gabriel and Eleanor is worthy of the wonderful praise that they receive. The story had immersed in the strong plot that was suspenseful, thrilling and without a doubt, exciting to read. The book is a fast mover for me, which is simply perfect for. Yes to all the brilliant twist and turns to come to the conclusion of the main characters searching for their tormentors. I do feel that Eleanor’s age could be older than Twenty one. Maybe her age range could be twenty four or older. I feel that there are certain situations in the story that requires a to make mature decisions as an adult. The writer could give the young character a guesstimate age range for the reader. Or the writer could not address the age at all, allowing the reader to come to an age given by wording from the characters description. I anxiously await the next story that comes from this series. I give this story two snaps and a twist. Until next time my fellow reads. Read on!
Mystery, romance, and scandal make this novel with folklore and a little bit of magic stirred in, an intense read. I loved the main characters, as Eleanor Wycliffe flees her home in the middle of the night, rather than face the dreadful truth that she has been confronted with. Finding herself in the Hebrides, an advertisement for a governess leads her to Dunevin Castle and Gabriel MacFeagh. Eleanor confounds Gabriel in the way she stands up to him, and demands a job as his daughter's governess, laying out logic that he cannot refute. As Eleanor wins over the fearful wisp of a girl who had been shocked into silence, keeping his vows becomes so much harder. However, when Eleanor becomes the next target of the curse hanging over Dunevin, Gabriel knows it is time to act, bringing the novel to a surprising conclusion. The novel, a copy of which I received as a gift through Booksprout, is a standalone and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Eleonor is devastated after she learns her family secret. Feeling that her entire life has been a lie, she runs off to faraway Scotland. In need of funds, she manages to secure a position working as a governess. Her young charge has been mute ever since the death of her mother three years earlier. Her employer, Lord Dunevin, is brooding and feared by many of the villagers. Predictably, the arrival of the young governess has a very positive effect on the widower and his daughter. This book gives the reader a vivid picture of life in a remote Scottish village. It was informative and I liked the mysterious atmosphere that was created with old superstitions and folklore. I enjoyed the book and I plan on reading this author again in the future.

A family secret has devastated Lady Eleonor and she has fled her home for a remote area in Scotland. Once here she realizes she needs coin, she notices a post for a governess to the laird. The locals have warned her off and told her the rumours of the family. She ignores these and goes to the island. Here she meets Laird Gabriel. Both realize that each is not what they seem and have secrets, but for the sake of her mute charge accepts her for the position. Eleonor pushes Gabriel with his daughter which leads to tension. But when he realizes she is next in line for the family curse he does what he can to avoid it. The story is well written, has Scottish folklore and superstition, mystery, secrets, trust and love. Looking forward to reading other stories by this author.

There is Scottish lore that defies logic and Nells own sensibility! There are strange accidents happening and Nell believes that there is a logical explanation! Read on about this couples journey to HEA. There is not much steam but the chemistry is off the chart! Bravo.

Gabriel is a cursed laird. Eleanor discovers a secret about herself that causes her to run away. What happens in between is a very original story of heartbreak, judging without knowing the whole picture , ancient wars and scandals over 20 years old. I really enjoyed this whole story though I did think Gabriel and Eleanor’s trajectory went from severe angst to instant love almost too quickly. I loved Julianna and Brighde’s connection, almost an eerie thing. You get a sense of who the villain is about half way through, but the reason behind them is kept very secret to the very end. This is worthy of your time!.

I don’t know if Eleanor was brave or foolish after being told her possible biological father to run from the security of her family to uncertain future as governess to a laird on a remote island with a dark past. I could tell poor Juliana shut herself out and didn’t speak because of something that had happened to her but the truth is not revealed until near the end. And Gabriel has so much love inside but is afraid to express it for fear of what could happen to his daughter and her bold governess who is also capturing his heart. It was interesting to read the history of the people and their customs. There were plenty of twists and turns and strange and scary happenings in this romantic historical mystery with a gothic feel.
White Mist is yet another well-crafted story by Jaclyn Reding. As with the first three books in this series, I was drawn in immediately and did not want to leave.
Oh, this is a book to be savored and perfect for a weekend curled up with your favorite beverage. Be forewarned, though; you'll need snacks around when you read about the meals around Michaelmas! (I'm sure I'm not the only one whose mouth was watering reading that part of the book!)
Although White Mist is the fourth in a series, it stands well alone. If you read this first, though, I will not be surprised if you pick up and read the others. It's that good.

What a wonderful world Jaclyn Reding has built on this Scottish island; a verdant landscape peppered with fleecy, black-faced sheep where crofter’s cottages loom out of the white mist and myths and legends abound.
This beautiful love story drew me in right from the very first page and I had to read until late into the night to finish it. It tells the tale of a sad and lonely little girl, Juliana, and her handsome but reclusive father, Gabriel MacFeagh, Viscount Dunevin. Both of them are trapped by the tragedies of the past until Lady Eleanor Wycliffe, fleeing her own former life, arrives to be the governess.
A real page-turner. Highly recommended.

I believe this is a rerelease of this book as it seemed familiar to me. I enjoyed the heroine as she was a strong, quick adapting woman. She has had a startling revelation which leads her to leave home and take a job as a governess. The hero actually is a kind man, but has secluded himself and his daughter. There seems to be a curse that was put on his family, but it can be broken. That is the gothic element of the story. It was a good read and even though it is the last of the series, it can stand alone for the most part.

What a thoroughly enjoyable read! The heroine is independent and takes matters into her own hands when obstacles arise. The hero is brooding and in need of rescue. There’s a traumatized child as well as a supernatural mystery. All of this makes the story race along.
I loved the plot and the characters. I have not read any of the previous books in this series but that did not make it difficult to understand this story. It is a standalone. But I plan to go back and read the others because this one was so much fun!.

I love this book. I loved reading about how Gabriel gave his heart to Eleanor and this sweet romance. So many twists and at times brought me to tears. This author is new to me but now I am going to go back to the beginning of the series and may just have to read this one again.
Well written with fleshed out characters and a lovely sort of misty feel to the story, especially during the first half, as though glimpsing it through time.
The end was a bit too tidy for some and slightly rushed. There was conflict and mystery during the story but the climax was a bit short.
Overall I very much enjoyed this and will gladly look for more from this author.
Eleanor was raised as a pampered dukes daughter. When her brother is forced to tell her the truth, she flees and becomes a governess to Gabriel’s daughter. His daughter hasn’t spoken. There’s mystery and the story moves at a good clip.
I enjoyed everything about this book. The characters, the settings, the mystery behind the curse. Love and kindness reveal the malicious mindset of behind the curse.
