"Say hello to Dani. Is this your first time meeting her? Good. This is Dani’s first time meeting her, too."
Daniela wakes up one morning on the sound of rain pouring outside her window. Only she doesn't recognize the pillows or the bedsheets or the floor. Or the gorgeous tattoed man who just came out of the bathroom. And out of her dreams. She was just dreaming about him.
"I don't know how an imaginary man has suddenly come to life. I don't know how a dream has become real. And i certainly don't want to even think about the hard body of this hallucination is now making me feel."
Having no memories of who she is or that Bishop-no-first-name is her husband the story follows Dani as she tries to escape the beautiful loft in France where Bishop keeps her against her will because she's in danger. Allegedly. People are trying to kill her. Allegedly
Enter Bishop - dark, serious and nothing more than trouble in Daniela's way, he is doing everything he can to protect her. With a patience that it's almost running out, he's trying his best not to kiss his wife senseless. Not to take her in his arms, where he knows she'll be safe. He tells her that she will understand. That when she'll get her memory back, she'll know why it was necesary on keep her locked up. Tying her to the bedpost. Cuffing her.
"It was strange, really. How a beautiful night could have turned out so wrong, how a happy ocassion could have turned to horror so quickly." - Bishop
Once she remembers how they got in this situation, the story gets really deep into everything. You just can't tell the difference between all the lies. What is the truth. Which ones are the good guys. How everything will end. Every road seems impossible to take without them getting killed.
"Bishop. Out of thin air, he arrives when all hope seems lost. Looking Hell-sent. Lucifer in a package of a Greek god. A fallen angel in an impeccable suit. He is every bit of diabolically handsome in my nightmare as he is everywhere else. And he is rushing towards me in a tie and a jacket blacker than midnight air, his countenance darker than any hero's should be."
It was a really fascinating story. It keeps you going. It fuels you to read and read until you'll figure it out. I can't wait for the next books. <3
"To Dani,
I was given a choice..
To live or to die.
I didn't know that they were the same thing.. until i found you.
*read this in the event of another memory loss* Signed, The man you saved (body and soul), Your husband, Bishop"
Fool's Gold is the first novel in the Kisses and Crimes series and what a fucking start! I have read all of Natalie's books and I have loved each and every one of them but I fell in love with this book. It was everything I expected in a Natalie book times two. I was hooked from the very first page until the very last. This is Dani and Bishop's crazy story...
Who am I? Where am I? And who the hell is the sexy man with golden eyes with only a white towel around his waist? Those are only a few questions that Daniela Bishop thinks about when she wakes up without her memory. She doesn't need her memory to know that she is a fighter so she runs and does everything that it takes to get out of this stranger's house and strong arms. But, her body is weaker than her mind at this very moment so she losses the battle against the man that says he is her husband. She feels trapped within this walls but oddly safe with this man with no first name, Bishop after she gets a few of her questions answered. She knows they are far away from home. They are in danger. And after attempting to make dinner, she knows she can't cook. Who is this Daniela Bishop and who is she running away from?
Dani has to find herself. She wants to trust her husband but her instincts are telling her that he has secrets. I mean, he won't even tell her his first name. She is torn. She shouldn't trust a man that she doesn't know but she feels safe with him. Feels protected. And when he laughs, she feels like they are a real couple. But something feels off. She notices the way he looks at her but he doesn't touch her. No loving embraces. No light touches. Is he afraid she is made of glass? She might not know much about herself but she knows she doesn't break easily. And dammit, she wants him to touch her! His tough exterior mixed with his wittiness and sex on a stick body is torturing her.
Bishop doesn't know where to go from here. He is fucked. This isn't how everything was suppose to go down. Her memory loss was not part of the plan. How is he suppose to keep her safe if she won't listen to him. He knows Dani. He knows she won't sit when he tells her to sit. She will stand until she passes out on her feet. And Dani 2.0 is even more stubborn than the original. He doesn't know what to do. Yep. He is fucked. She is fucked. They are royally fucked but at least they are fucked together. He has to find a way to keep then both alive. She needs to comes to terms with her past even if she can't remember it. And they both need to fight against the unknown. They had to leave the country for a reason. Who is after them and why? After all, they are just a loving couple from New York, right?
Sorry, it's so vague but I don't want to spoil this wild ride. I loved the crazy twists and turns of this story. And the characters...Dani is a badass that can't cook, loves to read, and can't hold her liquor. She is smart, witty, beautiful, and has a mean right hook. Throughout the book she discovers who she is and who she wants to be. Bishop is a man with secrets. He might shoot to kill but he is also a sap. He is also witty but can hold a poker face at the same time. Together they are a couple you don't want to mess with. But, not everyone got that memo.
Overall...I was hooked. Intrigued. And didn't know where it was going. I loved the mix of suspense, love, feistiness, and discovery. I laughed. Teared up. Got hot and bothered. And of course there were some oh, shit moments too. The perfect combo! I can't wait to see what happens next...
Quotes:
“You see, Dani? That’s how I know you’re vulnerable. Because if you were in your right mind… you would know what I’m capable of.”
“C’mon... give me more credit that that. If I wanted to kill you… I’d feed you some of your own cooking. You never did know your way around a kitchen.”
And the new Daniela Bishop is even better than the fucking original.
I wanted to like this book. It had the elements that should have made it work, but it just never got off of the ground. I felt like I was reading a series of thoughts that were never followed through to conclusion. The author starts with amnesia, but the abandons that theme (without a lot of explanation) and then moves to the next thought which is abandoned half way through and so on and so on. There are so many "twists" which are really just random, abrupt shifts in direction.
The plot was sloppy and there were HUGE holes in it, but I will say that I did like the passion I felt from Bishop for Dani even without credible explanations for it.
Fool's Gold was one of those books that I was so completely excited to read. I was first hooked with the blurb and cover of the book. I said to myself that this is the book I have to read asap. I was so drawn to it. When I was able to get my hands on it, I was not disappointed a t all. Written by Natalie E. Wyre, Fool's Gold is a compelling story of intrigue, action and emotion. I was totally in awe of the story.
Fool's Gold is one of the stories you simply have to read. I do not want to talk a lot about it and the blurb says it all. All I can say is once click this book and read because it will definitely take you for a wild and exciting ride. I loved this story. It was a mixture of mystery, suspense and romance that completely pulled me in. I was so into this story. My eyes were so glued to it. Apart from the suspense and mystery, there was so much drama and emotion that bled out from the pages and into my heart and soul. It became truly memorable to me. I liked that it was different from the books I read and that it caused so much reaction in me. Fool's Gold had so many unexpected events in the story that most times it had my jaw dropping. I was like, OMG, I did not expect that at all. That makes an amazing book. Natalie E. Wyre gave me an interesting and unique story that screamed epic plot. I loved that this book showcased more story.
In Fool's Gold we were introduced to Bishop and Dani. Together they were unique and dynamic characters that elevated the story. Dani so clueless and her having a memory loss made her even more clueless. I felt so sorry for her. But I loved how resourceful she was. she had a bad predicament but she was strong. She was no damsel in distress and I loved that. she was brash and bold which actually made me become so glued to the story. I wanted to know more about her. Now, Bishop was a completely different story. He was a mystery and that made me swoon. LOL. Bishop was so secretive. I could not get a good read on me. But it made me gravitate towards him. That secretive, dominant and sexy man that made my heart flutter with happiness. LOL.
Fool's Gold was a special book that I loved reading. It made me love more of Natalie E. Wyre's books. I will definitely be reading more of her books.
ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first book by Natalie E. Wyre and It isn't the only one I have, I own many, so I have to ask myself.... Why did I wait so long? Dani and Bishop are absolutely amazing! This is the first book in a romantic suspense series and Natalie was definitely on point.
I am NOT a fan of romantic suspense, I have high anxiety so not knowing what is going to happen or any mystery in a book kinda of makes me nervous, but this short novel had me on my toes and enthralled the entire time! I absolutely adore Dani and her persona. She is everything you look for on a female lead. Strong, smart, classy, and sophisticated! I can go on all day about her!
Bishop whoa, where is the fan??? Hot and alpha male to the extreme! I love a good protector and Bishop was definitely that! I cannot wait to continue on with this series and see where Mrs. Wyre takes us!
Fool's Gold is probably a more accurate title...you know, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me...
Good morning stranger...
Dani Bishop, aka, Daniella Maria Gabriela Gafanelli, wakes up to amnesia and a half-naked hot man in her bedroom who claims to be her husband. Not only does he look good with his washboard abs, dark hair, and chiseled features, he can cook too! But something seems amiss to Dani--what is she recovering from?! When Dani finds out the reason she has amnesia is that of a bullet to the brain in a failed murder attempt on her life, things get interesting.
But there is a dark side...
Bishop, aka The Crow, is Dani's dutiful husband who is seemingly taking care of her while she recovers, For safety, Bishop has brought Dani to Annecy, France and won't let her leave the townhome. Sounds a bit suspicious but Dani goes along with the charade for a hot minute before parts of the pre-amnesiac Dani begin to surface. Bishop knows he can't keep Dani locked up forever and leaves her an undignified option in and out of the townhome that allows her to visit the cafe and bookstore while trying to regain her memory. Meanwhile, Bishop continues with his shadowy comings and goings and odd phone calls.
Memory returns with a vengeance...
Dani finally gets her memories back and knows exactly who and what Bishop is and why he's "The Crow" and she is none too happy with him. Dani and Bishop initially met at her Sweet Sixteen party thrown by her mafia don father, Don Gafanelli, making Dani a mafia princess and Bishop...her bodyguard.
Overall...
The plot twists and turns with betrayal at every corner and no one is who they appear to be, rather FBI, simple cafe clerk or bodyguard. Not the most cohesive storyline but I am able to overlook it because of the dry humor and sarcasm. The dialogue between Dani and Bishop is the best part of the story. The flow is easy and believable between the characters with lots of witty banter. Two of the funniest lines in the story is about Dani's cooking skills: "Sure you're not finding something to stab me with?" "Thought about it. Figured it'd be easier to just kill you with my cooking." "So, what are we eating?" "None of your cooking ever again, that's for damn sure." "Smartass." "You're damn right I'm smart. Last night's meal nearly took me out."
When I find out Natalie E. Wyre has released a book, I one-click it as soon as I can. I became a fan of her writing after reading The Games & Diversions Series and just like I knew she would, Natalie out did herself with Fool's Gold.
Imagine waking up and having no memory of who and where you are. That is what Dani Bishop wakes up to, well she also wakes up to a very gorgeous man who she is married to, so why does she want to run away from him? With dreams and memories confusing Dani, she has no idea which way to turn and who to trust. Luckily, she is one stubborn, tough and determined woman. Daniela wants to remember her husband and her past but will it be at the cost of their lives?
Bishop, is built to protect those around him and his strength, love and trust is tested when he falls for Daniela. Now, they are on the run and his wife does not even remember who he is and the love they shared. What were they willing to go through to be together? Bishop will take down anyone who is trying to hurt Dani, his secret may be what destroys them and breaks her heart.
Fool's Gold has it all, the passion and suspense that makes this story a gripping page turning read. Their's secrets, lies and deceit around every corner and the steam with these two characters is scorching. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series.... 5 star must read
Well WOW! Natalie does it again. The start of a new series and she's off and running with this one. This story starts in France where we meet Dani who wakes up one morning with no memory, a man who tells her he's her husband, Bishop and that she's not safe. Dani doesn't remember anything. She doesn't trust Bishop, when he does leave her he locks her in the house which he's turned into a fortress. He's helped by his friend Jackson "Jax" both seeking information and then he's dealing with Dani who has figured out how to get out of the house, although he never lets her stray far. This book spans two countries and two continents, the suspense is over the top and the steam factor is sizzling. When the truth, the whole truth shakes out, well you didn't see that coming. Great story and can't wait for the next book about Jackson!!
I quite liked this story. The plot was complex with lots of lovely plot twists. The reason I have only given this story 3 stars is not because I didn't like the concept; however, I think that the execution needs some work. If this story had been edited for content more effectively it would have deserved 5 stars. One example of this is when a character says one thing like (paraphrasing) "He should have done his job and killed your father." And two lines later "We wanted your father where he belongs rotting in a cell." In the context of this conversation, he can't want both of these things - they appear to be diametrically opposed. There are several instances like this.
While I love this storyline, at times I felt like it was hard to follow all the characters. There is a lot of information that is given to you in this book, there is a lot of information that is not given to you until the very end, which is great, but at times I felt as lost as Dani.
Didn't get to the point. No chemistry between Bishop and Dani, and Bishop seem very casual about his supposed wife getting amnesia and forgetting him...
A romance hero should be freaking out, and doing everything to make her remember him...
Well I can say with one hundred percent honesty that my first read from Natalie Wrye had more twists and turns than I ever expected. The Bodyguard started with a literal bang and I just had to know what happened.
I liked how things kinda went in reverse for Bishop and Dani and that I was playing catch-up trying to sort out all the pieces. Much like they were. I could feel the tension in their back and forth. But I could also feel the love they had for each other.
This book was intense and from one chapter to the next I had no idea who was one of the good guys or not. Heck, even Bishop's loyalty came into question a time or two. Especially when his big (and I mean massive) secret was revealed. It threw everything that Dani thought she knew spiraling again and I wasn't sure how or if there was a way back from it. Talk about edge of your seat, heart racing, reading furiously to find out what would happen.
I got this as a free book and I had hopes for the book. So didn't pan out. I only read a few chapters and sooooo didn't like the characters. Just horrible abrasive characters. Definitely not for me.
I really enjoyed the storyline although it was a little confusing to read. I’m not sure if it was because the story included memories which were clearly outlined I should add but it would get confusing sometimes by the narrative being spoken.
Natalie has done it again!! She's twisted and bent my mind and I've never been happier to have it done!
That being said...... this book is freaking epic!! From the plot (which is legit going to leave you going holy !!!!) to the characters.... FYI.... Bishop is MINE! This book is guaranteed to kidnap the reader and leave them with one epic book hangover and begging and pleading for the next book.
With a very well planned out and executed story line, I found myself spellbound with Dani and the way the author was able to tap into her inner most thoughts and relay them in a way that had me feeling like they were MY thoughts. Bishop is a man who the author starts out making you immediately suspicious of. He's dark, mysterious and unknown. But the author really did an excellent job of making me want that dark man. This book is full of suspense and some serious steam. So much so that one can't help but wish they'd lose their memory and not know the hottie hubby! Overall, this book is a smashing success and I look forward to more!!
I really struggled to get into this book. It is well written but it felt like it took a long time to actually get into the real depth of the story. I enjoyed the story but really struggled to keep going. Really intrigued by Dani and her story and filling the holes that were left empty by her amnesia.
I'm gonna be completely honest, I have no idea what the hell I just read and this is supposed to be the first book in the damn series.
The story itself is all over the damn place. We have Dani, who loses her memories, and then we have Bishop, the husband and then we have the question of who did what to who, why, when and how.
Add onto that a really badly done, over the top, baffling storyline about the mafia, multiple characters and a bunch of other factors that were not explained at all. The story was supposed to be SUSPENSEFUL. It was honestly just stupid. I don't even know what the hell happened in the end or who even actually did what and for what purpose. The writing was choppy, had multiple typos, and I now realize why this book has such a low rating.
Dani is a mess of a character. One moment she is drunk and putting herself in danger and the next she's kicking ass. This was not because of her developing her character, this was just the author getting bored with what she had written and trying to do something else halfway into the storyline.
Bishop was whatever. We kept getting revelations about him, and each one was more mediocre than the last, and then we reach the ending of the book, which is supposed to be a cliffhanger, but aren't those supposed to make you want to read the next book? Aren't they supposed to make you cling to the edge of your seat in anticipation? If so, then this was the worst cliffhanger possible.
1.5 stars. I didn't blatantly hate this book, and I commend the author for actually trying to create a story. The mark was just missed by a lot.
I enjoy dark romances, mob stories, and a twisty, turny, good read. This book delivered on most. It definitely had the mob element and corruption. Although there was romance, I wouldn't call it dark, even when considering the setting. There was some heat; but for me, it simmered more than boiled. That's not necessarily a bad thing, and it didn't really take away from the story line. However, I would've liked to see a bit more passion--to the point of boiling over.
Lastly, it more than delivered on the twists and turns. I would even go so far as to say that I felt as if I'd been dropped into the second book of a series or missed a prequel on more than one occasion. There were a few times I felt as if I were missing a back story that would clarify things, but to my knowledge, this is the first book in the Gafanelli Mob series. In the author's defense, invoking a reader's feeling of missing pieces/elements could have been intentional to really connect the reader with one character's lost memories...or it could have been me. I did have a lot going on in my life while reading this book.
Bottom line: I enjoyed the story and characters. The series has promise. For me, this is really a 3.5 star review, but these stupid platforms won't let reviewers give half stars. Thanks for an enjoyable escape, Ms. Wrye!
Clarification: this review is for The Bodyguard, which is how it appeared in my Kindle. However, the review showed up under Fool's Gold. I believe that they are the same book and may have gone through a rebranding/recovering, which isn't uncommon with authors when switching publishers.
Fast pace with steamy and intrigues, this book take us on a long ride through Dani amnesia. With her, we question if Bishop is the good guy or the villain Dani sees in her nightmares. Or was that her memories?
I love how the author walk us thorough the suspence. Woke up with no memories in a strange room in a small town of France with a half naked man claimed he is your husband, we see mostly from Dani POV. And bit by bit, the story unravels.
But when they have their first talk, why the author didn't walk the memory line with readers, the author decide to just let us know from Dani POV that Bishop is telling her about his broken childhood. I got to say, being told and not being taken to experience the scene was lacking. It felt rushed and like swept away, when I feel in that memory of Bishop background should tell us, readers, more.
The intrigues, the scheme, the plotting was good but there's holes. Lots of them to fill.
But the holes, how did Bishop escaped from that hospital in his near dying state? The great plot of dirty politics and Mafia war, what was the ending? And the senator's daughter? Is the book end a HEA? I'm not even sure since at the end of this book claimed the next book would have other couples??
At the end, the plot was too complicated with no clear solutions. But then again, the author promise the next book in the series might answer them
In The Bodyguard Dani and Bishop are on the run, Dani has been shot and has suffered a memory loss including that Bishop is her husband. The lack of communication and how the story just back and forth between characters gives the plot flow issues. It took reading well into the story to figure out all the players and even then some surprises are revealed as the story progresses.
I liked the happy ending except for the last phone call that hinted at more trouble for Bishop and Dani but no hint at what kind of trouble. If you like mysteries with lots of twists and turns then this is a good story for you, but it just lack flow for me.
I took a chance on this because it was free and I have to say it wasn't as terrible as I feared. There were some good twists but it was a bit all over the place.
Dani gave us glimpses of being a strong badass woman but then she would go off and get drunk. For someone on the run and who needed to stay alert it made no sense at all. But Bishop and Dani seemed to really have a strong connection which was nice.
I don't think I'll be reading any more of this series (well unless they're free, maybe).
I could not put this book down. The intensity, confusion, and breath holding scariness was a wild high.
Dani doesn't know who to trust. Bishop says it's him, but how does she really know? So many things don't add up, but one thing does, and it shouldn't, and that's the raging lust between them.
Bishop is a strong alpha you just want to crawl into. Dani is a strong willed woman who blocks and challenges Bishop at every turn. I loved their chemistry and the race to see if Bishop is what he says he is.
I found this book totally puzzling and not sure it was by design or an unhappy accident. I failed to warm to the characters and the story line bounced a little too much for my liking. I almost gave up at 70% of the way through but dug my heels in and read to the end. It all ended pretty anti-climactic and I didn't feel the suspense in the way I am sure the author hoped. This was a free book from Amazon.
Spicy intrigue kept me reading and left me wanting to know more about the characters. Didn’t care for the title but couldn’t think of a better one. Hope to see more of the main characters in the rest of the series. And I will definitely continue reading the series. Four stars for plot. Five stars if there was more details in their surroundings and as it emerges- her family.
Lets give our FL amnesia. Let's make the ML super protective. Let's make him trap her inside the house because she doesn't remember anything and people want to kill her. Lets make the FL as dumb as possible and have her escape to go get drunk. Lets have some guy pull a gun on her while the ML watches. Let's immediately have the ML allow her to leave the house alone again and again.
Someone give me the name and number of the computer code that recommended this garbage to me.
