Tales of Gentalia #6

Karta Monstra: Hunter’s Tale

Rate this book
A Kard game stacked.
A devious trap laid.
A confused player lost.

Industry Giant Tornado Tech has spat out yet another generation of their most popular game franchise and newbie player Hunter Pitchum is lost (both in the convoluted rules and in a terrible cell-shaded nightmare realm from which there is no escape).

But not all decks are dealt equally and Karta Monstra has more hidden up its sleeve than simple collectible battle monsters. His own Kards challenge Hunter to deal with them and the only hope for a full release is to come out on top!

As Dimensional X surrounds him, an important question remains unanswered. What kind of collectible monster game would challenge players to sexual battles? More importantly to Hunter is his own personal question, “Why doesn’t anyone just tell me what is going on?”

Warning: Contains m/m/f, and h/m situations and collectible monster banging.
While part of a series, this novelette can be read as a stand alone story!

Going into this book, I knew nothing about the card based fighting games this particular tale is based on. Coming out of this book, I'm more confused than ever, and I'm pretty sure that was the point.

As with all of the books in the Gentalia series, this is erotica, make no mistake about that. Sex happens. Weird creatures happen. But jokes also happen and this one is no exception. The confusion about these games is what leads Hunter to discover a super secret game area that once again puts that Tornado Tech headset through the paces.

Wonderfully wacky and a surprising amount of sweet, I would definitely recommend this book to fans of the series and anyone who doesn't get the appeal of complex card based fighting games.

So, and I mean this in the nicest possible way, this is one of the silliest things you will ever read. Or is it the sexiest? Anyway, one of the two. In this latest installment of the Tales of Gentalia, the clueless hunter stumbles into a game he doesn't know how to play (and which is full of deliberately mystifying rules and complex charts), until the rules change and he DOES know what to do ;).

I don't know what to say that I haven't already said about this crazy, hilarious, zany, bizarre series, but I guess I'll start by saying I love the faux-Russian names for the monsters (well, they're real, they're just ridiculous), and even as a non-gamer I can appreciate how the author pokes fun at complicated and nonsensical gaming rules, not to mention his own other stories. If you've read and enjoyed the previous Gentalia books, you're probably going to like this one, and if you haven't tried any of them before, this is as good an introduction as any, even though it's not the first. But be warned: despite all the bright colors and sly jokes, the sex is very, very kinky. Like "How did he come up with that?" insane, not to mention, since this is a game, anatomically impossible. But somehow it all works out to be in good fun instead of disturbing, and this novelette can provide you with a short and refreshing laugh break from the real world. Read it over your lunch break. Or maybe not. Maybe only in a dark closet or something. In any case, if you want to read something unlike anything you've read before, read it.

As a fan of Pokemon in general, but not a fan of card based games and overly complicated hooey, this book was a perfect parody that made me laugh out loud several times. Hunter's utter confusion about pretty much everything (except the sexy stuff) and the ridiculously complex monstra names cracked me up, despite the fact that I gave up trying to figure out how to pronounce the names after a while. Such a fun adventure chalkful of easter eggs and breaking the fourth wall that's sure to please anyone...in more ways than one ;)

This illustrates well what I already knew: Card games with complicated rules just aren't my thing. I was so confused most of the time, but I had some good laughs at the beginning. I didn't enjoy the sex fantasies as much as those in the other books. I'd say somewhere around 2,5 stars rounded up.

Karta Monstra was very funny--a great spoof on a certain card monster franchise. But these monsters are deranged and very sexy!
I skipped a few of the short stories in the middle, so I'm going to have to go back and read them. Reading this one right after Vambrace, I can see a big jump in the author's skill. Looking forward to the others!
