A PROPHECY TO FULFILL

Two hundred years ago, our world changed forever. Two realms combined in an explosion of magic. One morning everything was normal and the next? Every human body was host to another magical creature who had thoughts and a mind of its own. However, with power comes darkness. Someone wants to wipe this earth clean and will stop at nothing to consume it.

SHE IS NOT A HERO

Or so she thought. Wren had grown up with another voice in her head but had never considered herself magical. She doesn't have the talents other people have. She certainly doesn't have the abilities anyone else has. But she is charming and manages her business quite well. She deals in emotions and makes people happy. It's a simple life, but it's hers.

HE THINKS SHE COULD BE

Burke was a bodyguard first and always. He had been sent to collect her and deliver her in person to the most powerful creatures in their world. But the moment he steps through the broken door of her shop, his world changes forever. She's strange. She's uncomfortable. And she's so damned beautiful. He is convinced she is part of a prophecy that can save their world.

But how to convince her?

Emma Hamm has mastered the art of blending humor with drama and imagination as she steers us down the path that is Silver Blood. Imagine being the owner of a business called The Juice Bar, not so unusual you say? How about if the “juice” sold was infused with the magic of emotions manufactured by the quirky Wren and her “associate,” E. As charming and delightful as Wren is, it is the mystery of E that really caught my attention. E is an unknown entity, housed within Wren’s body, and their symbiotic relationship is fascinating.

When Wren’s world is turned upside down, she is about to discover answers to questions she didn’t even realize she has! Follow Wren and E as they enter a world filled with danger and wicked villains! When things are at their very worst, the biggest reveal is yet to come and purely magical!

Emma Hamm has done a marvelous job of creating a world and characters in this first edition of a new and what appears to be totally entertaining new series! An author to watch, a tale to read!

I received this copy from Emma Hamm in exchange for my honest review.

DNF at 34%, because as much as I enjoy Emma Hamm's writing style I just can't connect to either of the main characters... plus, I am implementing a new philosophy when it comes to a lot of activities in my life, including books, and this is the first "victim" of it :) and said philosophy is: if it's not a "hell yeah" then it's a "no" :)

A magical World Of Words

(Thank you so much to the author for sending me this book in exchange for an honest review).

For a debut, this book is amazing. And if you love unique fantasy, you need to start reading it now.

The best thing about this book is that it's incredibly unique and imaginative. And not in the silly, abstract way that makes you think "wut the heck is going on this is so weird I can't understand why it's been published"; no. Silver Blood is a riveting, refreshing debut that stands out in the sea of independently published YA novels.

The atmosphere is electrifying and the imagery vivid. The world building is deftly spun, and Hamm gently whispers it to spellbinding life. The writing's strong, but occasionally the narration is clumsy and awkward. There's also a lot of telling - primarily at the start of the book - and the beginning also suffers from very tedious info-dumping. But that does fade as the story progresses.

The story is constantly entertaining. It's fast-paced, unpredictable, intelligent, and tightly plotted. The descriptions are deeply evocative, and the dialogue is witty, characterising, and compelling. It's fantastic.

“Come with me," he said fiercely. "I will keep you safe."
"How can you?" The whisper sounded like a scream to his ears.

Wren is a lovely heroine. She's vulnerable, spunky, capable, independent, and doesn't let anyone push her down. When Burke does an undoubtedly unacceptable thing by coming in while she's bathing, she doesn't excuse his behaviour and instead demands an explanation, all the while letting him know he's done an inappropriate thing. In a world where YA heroes constantly get away with inexcusable things because the heroines are too awed by their hotness and secretly turned on, it's awesome that Wren sticks by her guns and lays the blame where it belongs in situations like these: on the guy. And to Burke's credit, he respects her boundaries.
But I don't like how Wren spent the last quarter of the book. I can't give spoilers, so I'll just say that she's reduced to an incapable damsel. As much as I felt sorry for her, it did mean Burke got to do the rescuing and basically save the day, and I don't like that Wren was so incapacitated and docile. I wanted her to have a big part in saving herself.

The secondary characters are equally compelling. I love Jasper and Lyla and how original and three dimensional they are, and I also like the depth of Burke and Pitch's characters.
But I do wish the villain had been as fleshed-out.

The romance is very swoony and sweet and I especially enjoyed the dream sequences between Burke and Wren. But I don't like how Burke was frequently overprotective - he respects Wren, certainly, but his protectiveness frequently becomes too much. That leaves me undecided about the romance.
Otherwise, however, Burke compliments Wren's character well.

Silver Blood is a beautifully crafted and utterly unique fantasy, dazzling in its characters and world-building. While I didn't always like the romance and where the story found Wren towards the end, it's an entertaining, clever, and marvelous debut that I highly recommend.

I loved EVERY FREAKING MOMENT OF THIS BOOOOOOOK!!!!!

Yeh I know 5 Stars might be a bit overboard even for me but this book was seriously like catnip, I had to roll in every page of it's sheer deliciousness, fantastical, wonderfulness, I am at a loss for words of just how much i enjoyed it.
Alright now that I have recovered let's get down to the nitty gritty of a review, this is the first book I have read of Emma's so I was basically going in cold, but the story and the world Emma created hooked me from the first page.
Wren, is a juice (emotions) seller in a world where two realities have collided and resulted in humans having to coexist with a magical creature inside of them or the choice of either one of them dying in the process. Wren's creature is an unknown which makes her a "Curiosity" to those around her, but E (for Entity) despite not revealing itself will do anything to ensure Wren's safety (very sweet).
Now we add a prophesy, even more powerful creatures, Jiminy Burke a Dream walker (love interest) and a really bad guy who wants to destroy the world and we are in for a wonderful adventure. I must say that the cover even though nice didn't quite live up to how I imagined Wren, and the one below was the best I could find.

As the story progresses and Wren is unwillingly drawn into helping to save the world and we get to know more about E, who is strangely powerful yet weak. I am not sure if that works for me, because everyone is so scared of E yet it can't really do anything, maybe that will develope better in the next book. but I did love how weird Wren became when E took over, luuuvly.

Anyway I can't recommend this book more highly to those lovers of fantasy with a swirl of romance, I can't wait for the next book, but in the meantime I am going to give another of Emma's books a go.

Somehow I found myself wanting more and less at the same time. I wanted more world-building and more focus on Wren and E, especially E. I wanted less characters to "care about" and less mysterious jumping from plot point to plot point.

I wish this story had focused more on E. I don't like the romance in this book at all. It feels super unnatural and I'm not here for it. There is simply too much going on and the book doesn't delve properly deep enough into the most important matters in my opinion.

That being said, I adore the world! I love the concept and the magic system and the idea of selling emotions as a drug. I love Wren's and E's characters and their relationship as it grows. Will most likely read the next book!

Five stars

So I have read my fair share of fantasy/romance/action books since subscribing to KU, and honestly this book is a breath of fresh air. (Unless I’m missing a whole subcategory of books that perfectly describe a futuristic earth where humans and magical beings fuse together, but I don’t think I am.) Regardless, the characters are complex and interesting, the writing is amazing, and the setting and storylines are both unique in all the right ways. I can’t recommend this book enough, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that there may be a sequel in the future!

A solid 3 and half stars. I enjoyed the story and the world building. There were some definite issues with consistency and head-hopping, which did distract from the story. I liked the characters, but at times I felt like we were being told who they were rather than us being shown, especially near the end. Some of it rang a little false because of this. However, the mystery of what is happening and the secrets held by some of the characters drew me in. Overall a fascinating read.

Okay, review time! I’ve read quite a few books over the past few weeks, but this one was definitely one of my favorites!

To start, Hamm’s fantastical world consists of human beings that play host to magical entities, a coexistence that is necessary for their survival. There is a LOT of exposition to get through in the early parts of the book, but it was well worth it. Sometimes I read books and have no use for all of the information provided up front, but Hamm creates a world that justifies such an exposition.

The main character, Wren, is a juice seller (“juice” is actually emotions). It reminds me of one of those fantasy RPGs I used to play on Xbox.

“Oh Guildmasterrrrr….”

Anyways, Wren also has an unknown magical entity inside of her, referred to as “E”. Apparently this is unusual in Wren’s world, as we get labels/abilities for other types of magical entities, but Wren knows very little about her own.

Which brings me to Burke. His magical entity is a Dream Walker, which means they can go inside peoples’ dreams and even make changes to the dream (and vice versa, the dreamer can start to control them as well).

A concept I can get on board with.

There is a slow burn buildup with Wren and Burke, which I (of course) loved. My only complaint was that I would have liked to see a longer (and more descriptive) love scene, because I’m a romance junkie/perv and I just spent 250 pages waiting for these 2 to seal the deal!!!

I am what I am. Sorry.

Hamm is very attentive to detail and I can tell this story was created with a lot of imagination and love. Awesome cover art as well! A great read, especially for those who really enjoy the fantasy genre. 5 stars!

Interesting and unusual

Different to anything I've read before, I enjoyed the unfurling of the reality of the main character Wren. Looking forward to reading more about her, Burke and their newly formed team.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

In Silver Blood, Emma Hamm has created a world where magical creatures (good and evil) inhabit human bodies. This symbiotic relationship allows them to live either as 2 souls that co-exist or to merge and become 1 soul. Each magical creature has different abilities.

Wren is an eccentric juice maker and her creature is called E. E for entity, as Wren has no idea what type of creature E is or what magic E has. She doesn't even know if E is male or female. Their relationship is strong and forms the backbone to this whole story. Ever since she was abandoned at a young age, E has always been Wren's best friend and her protector.
I found both Wren and E's characters fascinating. The very complex relationship they have is what drew me into the story. From the beginning I wanted to know more about E!

Burke is a dream walker who can enter and change people's dreams. He is tasked by the mysterious "Five" to find the subjects of a prophecy and convince them to work with the Five. Burke believes Wren is part of this prophecy after meeting her in a dream. He is also strangely drawn to Wren and cannot stay away from her.
However the Five are not the only ones interested in Wren.

Silver Blood is full of fantasy and suspense with just enough romance to wet your appetite.
I cannot wait to read the next 2 books in the series and learn more about these characters.

I won this book here on Goodreads, Thank you.

It's a futuristic book were realities collide. Humans now coexist with magical beings inside them otherwise the choice is death of either one. i have not read any books from this author before and i found the concept of this book extremely interesting. The main character is Wren the creature inside her is an unknown whom she calls e, because she deals in emotions. I enjoyed the book but for me it is one of those books i want to read again because i might have missed something. I won't say anything more because i don't like to give anything away.

Give this book a chance i think you will be pleasantly surprised.

I would have given this a solid four star rating on the merits of the story and, to some degree, the characters alone. There were enough editing issues to warrant a full star down grade, though. Not just typos but sentences that didn't make sense, things that seemed like incomplete thoughts and the like.

I'll probably read the next one in the hopes that the editing issues improve. The story is imaginative and warrants a closer look.

ETA: I neglected to mention that I hated the epilogue. It's next-book marketing drivel and can be skipped entirely.

This was alright. The world is very interesting and would have liked more world-building and less romance.

Burke never interested me and instead I wanted to explore the relationship with Wren and E instead.

The Five don't make a lot of sense, their purpose is obscure.

I really don't think I'll continue this series, although I am interested in the last book which is Pitch's. He was an interesting character.

The magical world and the human world collide. There's not enough room for both so they share bodies (interlopers). I thought to myself, I'm going to love this one.

It's been awhile since an otherworldly story has caught my attention. So I was really excited, unfortunately as I got into the plot I found The story was just to convoluted to enjoy.

This author has the writing style I love, so I will be trying another of her stories. Okay read.

I think it is getting harder to spin the urban fantasy trope. This author created a futuristic world with a completely new twist. Supernatural humans are actually hosts for supernatural beings who have taken over the world. Some relationships are mutual and some are adversarial. Of course, there is a governmental committee that tries to oversee everything, but as in most worlds infested with supernatural beings, there is an unknown group who REALLY controls what happens.

The characters are strong and well- rounded. The plot drives the story forward. This is one of those stories my family does not like because I tend to ignore them a little bit so I can finish it. :) I wanted to keep going. I wanted to get to the end. I want to read the next book. This is a great start to this series.

One of the key Things I really enjoyed about this book was the setting, along with the description that the author used when describing this new world with humans and mystical creatures was absolutely fascinating.

It's so hard to describe this book. There is so much that goes on. All the magic, all the different "species" we will call them that I found my self confused at times. It wasn't all that bad, but I found my self having to think had about some things.

Wren was great, I really liked her and E even. She was really strong in many ways.

I was drawn to Burke. He was persistent and I found my self liking that. He was the type of man that when he's on a mission he wants to follow it through. In admired that about him.

This book sort of reminded me of the Movie/Book The Host. The way there was something like a spirt living in humans head. It was a great different quality that this book had.

This definitely isn't your typical romance. I really enjoyed the fantasy aspect and was drawn into the plot and what was going on. The whole prophecy thing had my mind on overdrive trying to figure it all out. The mystery around it and the Five was outstanding.

Overall I will continue to read the books because I can't wait to see what happens! 4.5 stars. #2OCCJD

Silver Blood by Emma Hamm is a unique, quirky, magic laced, adventure filled page turner that will have any fantasy fan begging for more.

The story follows a young eccentric woman named Wren, in a futuristic world where our realm has fused with that of magical creatures, at their expense. Now magical beings must share a body with their human hosts to survive this new world, but like any good fantasy tale, there are those who wish to destroy any peace that can be found for the innocent.

Let Hamm paint the pictures of your imagination as she brings you through a waking world filled with magical beings of all types, and a dreaming world, buried deep in the mind where anything can happen; all centered around heroine Wren, her captivating creature E, mysterious ex-government agent Burke, the all powerful Five and more. It is a story that will stretch your imagination and gather your attention, ready for the next installments Hamm puts forth.
You won't regret it!

I read first the old version before coming to the new one. I admit that Emma's writing is stellar and the world she has created here is very interesting and very vast. I loved Wren and her shop. True emotions can become...drugs but the way she worked and cared for her customers was unique in a world where everyone has a second nature-spirit in them.

THIS CERTAINLY HAD AN INTRIGUING CONCEPT, ONE VERY VIVID AND IMAGINATIVE. WOULD HAVE MADE A REALLY INTERESTING MOTION PICTURE. THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAD WAS THE ROMANCE DEPT. I HAVE ENJOYED CLEAN ROMANCES THAT WERE SATISFYING ON THE EMOTIONAL LEVEL, BUT THIS ONE LACKED THE FLUENCY AND INTIMACY THAT WEAVED A PERFECT LOVE STORY.

OUR HERO is a Dream Walker. He can walk in dreams and manipulate his body to suit the dream. Sent by the 5, entities that you will learn more about when you read the story to find certain beings who fit the prophecy. The first one he encounters is a very odd but beautiful woman in a dream and he is determined to find her and coax her into working for the 5. Apparently there is a bad guy out there who wants to catch her for the entity that resides within her. Although Burke appeared strong and protective...I failed to get any warm vibes from him. His "love" for the heroine in terms of reading it...I BARELY felt any emotion that connects him to her and the events they were thrown in together hardly pinpointed that they were getting to know each other. I like my romances slow...or filled with sexual tension. This one was child's play and I did feel like slamming into a brick wall when it Burke's feelings went verbatim. I mean...when did it even happen!?

OUR HEROINE is a queer child. She doesn't know what entity resides in her body thus she is known as Curiousity. She makes Juices... basically bottled up emotions in the year 2600 and sells them to those who need it. Probably a new inventive drug though I think cocaine and marijuana would still overrule those kind of magical potions. Anyways, she was bizarre and I can't say I felt emotionally connected to her or liked her very much. She's sassy and spunky but not in the way I can appreciate. She's definitely a bit lost and the story will cover parts of who E is but sadly we don't know much about her history.

OVERALL the lack of emotion that weaves the relationship between the characters were a downer for me. The characters and sides were interesting...and perhaps some were arresting BUT I digress from the emotional department. It clearly needed working on.

Silver Blood had an interesting concept; an original twist on the theme of the magical and normal worlds intertwining.

Emma's writing is descriptive, colourful, and passionate: she truly loves the characters who she's given life to. Wren was fully fleshed out, her independence and sass balanced out by moments of weakness, where even then, she did her best to hold on. Her relationship with E was so sweet, considering the sacrifice that each made to help the other. Burke is a bit of a loner, but his love for Wren is endearing, though I have to admit that his thoughts are a little annoying at times. We don't get as in-depth with him as we did with Wren, so I'm hoping for more quality time with Burke in the following books.

Maybe it was just me, but I felt like Wren and Burke's romance was a little...instalove. (if that's the proper use of the word) I mean there's definitely chemistry between them, but I felt like it could've been developed further before either of them realised that it was a big, all-encompassing love. I liked the fact that Wren got herself out of most of the troubles she fell into, without depending so much on Burke.

I won't say much about the storyline in order to avoid spoilers, but I think it flowed pretty nicely. There weren't really any parts that I struggled to get through; just parts where I didn't want to go on because I knew something bad would happen. The instances of pain were described really well, they left me grimacing. P.S: This book wasn't that long or anything, it was just that I was having exams in between and therefore had to force myself to stop reading. It was easy to pick up where I left off.

Fantasy fans would undoubtedly be hooked from the get-go, so give this a try if you like good world-building, magic and romance!

Special thanks to the author for giving me a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This review will also be posted on my blog sometime soon.

I like how magic works and the symbiotic relationships. I really liked the premise of the book enough that I feel bad writing this review. But a few things really sank this book so to speak.

1st. I read the new and improved book. I didn’t notice really bad writing. There were some typos and such but overall it was fine. The thing that really did it in for me was the fact that the 5 god characters just wouldn’t fight the villain. For no reason but that they said they wouldn’t. Yet they keep stating that the villain could destroy everything including them. WTF! Make up a reason why the 5 gods can’t fight. Not just they made a vow to themselves that they wouldn’t interfere. That is lame and not true since they were totally interfering.

2nd thing. The 5 gods had basically 3 fighters with hope of recruiting people necessary for the prophesy. This villain can supposedly destroy the world including then gods and they got 3 fighters. Lame!!

3rd. Problem with scale. The author talks about the gods being around forever or some thousand of years. Earth is 4.6 BILLION years old. Then says tens of thousands and a few times refers to millions. It was inconsistent and grossly off.

The MC has a symbiotic relationship with an entity “E”. The entity refers to others sometimes hundreds of other, sometimes thousands, a few times millions. Again inconsistent and not realistic. I don’t want to go into depth and give out spoilers.

Again the world is really interesting and I really wanted to read the book but it had some huge problems that ruined the book.

“Silver Blood” creates such a wonderful world where magic and normal coexist – in one human being that is. It is such an original and interesting idea. Wren’s quiet life as a shop owner is shaken when she meets Burke in one of her sessions of Juice production. Juice is a valuable commodity in this world. Is like a drug that can induce different emotions, depending on what you’re buying. Burke is a dream walker and in his search for the one that may save the world, he find Wren. What happens from here is funny, gripping and complex.

Until close to the end, Wren is a mystery when it comes to the magical creature that lives inside her. She and E live in a perfect union. E is her best friend, protector and guide. I loved their relationship so much and it made more sense in the end, when E’s nature is revealed. I appreciated how the romance was built as well, no instant attraction, no “I loved you from the start” stuff. Just a gradual increase of affection that is proven throughout the pages.

I have some issues with the other characters in the book, as I did not quite understand their background that well, but I believe that later in the series it will all make more sense. Also, I think some of the elements in the ending were a little rushed, but all is well.

This was such an amazing, refreshing and original story and I am confident that the other books in the series are even better!

This book is so original & intriguing. I love the world setting.

In a world where magical creatures & humans coexist and share bodies, shopkeeper Wren sell emotion call “juice” to whoever can afford it. People call her a curiosity, since E, the creature who inhabit her body is of unknown species.

Burke is a dream walker, he can basically enter & alter a person dreams. The young man is being send by his employers, The Five (a group of the most powerful creature that ever existed) to find four special person that can help defeat a rising evil. Of course, he believes that Wren is one of them. The first time he see her, they share a dream. He then come to her shop & offer her a job, which she immediately refuse. It was quite comical to see the interaction between them, Burke is persistent & Wren is stubborn.

It was so refreshing to finally have a book with mystical creatures that were not the classical vampires/werewolf/witch. I also love the romance part, it was sweet without being over the top. Wren & Burke are fun characters and have a great chemistry.
I am looking forward to the others book of this series.

I won this book on Uma's blog, Books.Bags.Burgers. This was a pretty good fantasy. I honestly warred a bit on whether to give it two or three stars. The main reason why is because of the plot. The story focuses mostly on Wren - what her life's been like, what she does to survive, and what's inside of her. I'm not sure I personally like the human host aspect. I'm used to strong women who have it within themselves by birth or by strong will and determination. Then I had all of these other questions about the prophecy and The Five. And the whole "...reunited because it feels so good" was a little cheesy for my tastes. I wanted more action and more progress in this prophecy business. I felt I just scratched the surface of what will be the overall big picture.
I do give props to the author who did create different kinds of characters I haven't read of and I liked the whole concept of Juice. And while I listed what bothered me in the beginning of this review, I do understand a first installment of a series can be just the first, shaky step to a discovery of a bigger world. It's because of these pluses that I gave "Silver Blood" three stars.

Silver Blood was an amazing and unique novel. With blends of fantasy, magic and action.

Silver Blood is set hundreds of years from now where almost every human body is host to another magical creature who has thoughts and a mind of its own.

The main character; Wren has always grown up with a voice in her head that she only knows as "E". She considers "E" her friend. Burke is sent to convince Wren to join him in fulling a prophecy that he thinks she is a part of. Wren is uncertain and believes he has the wrong person.

I really liked the characters; Wren, "E", Burke, Pitch, Jasper and Lyra. Emma Hamm created a dynamic and captivating world that I really found mesmerizing!

Silver Blood was well written and had an amazing plot that drew me in right from the start! I'm looking forward to see where the series goes! I enjoyed reading it and definitely recommend fans of fantasy and magic to read Silver Blood!

Well written just not for me

The world building was superb, the character development was spot on and the characters themselves were relatable. That being said, I didn't make it past 58% because I just couldn't get over the mentality that it's ok to kidnap people and force them to work for you. That, and that the person being forced will just roll over and allow it to happen. I tried, but I just couldn't... I lost all respect for the characters, all of the supposed "good guys". I might check out the author again with a different series since the writing was on pint, but not if the characters fall into the same types.

First of all, while there is a romance, I wouldn't call this book romantic. There's something too dark and unsettling about this book and its characters for it to really come off as romantic. In fantasy terms, it's quite good - a unique storyline with unusual mythical beings (beyond the vamps, shifters, dragons, and witches that always seem to dominate the genre). The authorial voice comes off rather dispassionate and almost clinical - and while off-putting at times, it adds to the eerie surrealism in the book.

Also, there were quite a few typos and errors - enough to jar me out of the story (and I'm usually not one to really obsess on errors).
