Lily McGibbens has been assigned the ridiculous task of getting the crankiest cowboy in Wyoming to donate to the Dame City Attraction Fund. The counsel has tried year after year, to no avail, to get the man to donate. Now the task is on her shoulders. She’s just a bookstore owner. She has no skills in the art of persuasion. Just ask her ex-husband. No matter how much she tried to get him to stay home with just her, she never had the lure to keep him there. She thought living in wacky Dame City meant she’d be able to avoid men. She definitely didn’t want to hike out to the meanest man’s ranch and beg for anything. Ford Gentry has things on his mind other than whatever new, stupid ploy the ladies of Dame City are thinking up. He has work that needs to be done. He always has work that needs to be done. He makes damn sure he is never idle. Idle hands mean ghosts creeping in on him. After serving three tours in Afghanistan, he’ll do anything to avoid those ghosts. He just wants to be left alone with his cattle. But something in him reacts to Lily’s distrusting eyes. For the first time in years, his body is reacting to a woman. It won’t work, though. Women mean distractions. Distractions mean he’ll lose his intense focus and his mind could wander. It won’t work. Lily has no choice but to try to fight for the donation. After being so rudely turned away and having the defeat so readily accepted by the counsel, she’s determined to get the stubborn ass to give something, even if it’s just a measly piece of straw. She fights him for the donation, using every tool the ladies of Dame City can give her. Ford doesn’t stand a chance against their combined will. Or does he? The man didn’t survive three tours by giving in easily. Lily won’t stop, though. The ladies are counting on her. She’s counting on herself. Ford is the first man she’s been able to be around without wanting to pluck his eyes out. It has to mean something. She’s determined to get him to play nice with her. Or naughty. As the ladies of Dame City always say, “Use what God and your momma gave you: body to lure ’em in and brains to keep ’em coming.”
I was given an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review: This was a querky quick read. Lily just wants to make her business work but at one of the mandatory meetings for all business owners she is some how roped into having to go to the Gentry house and attempt to get the owner Ford to make a donation to their cause. Of course, that is easier said then done as every women in the town has tried a lot of tricks to get him to donate.
This book tells you some of the old tricks that didn't work, shows the inner workings of Lily's mind, involves some goats, a HEA and is a full length book. There is some sex but the scenes are not graphic at all and it is really more about a person so closed off to the world finally opening up to the most unlikely of people.
I had a fun time reading this short story and I would recommend it to anyone who just wants a quick fun read.
p.s You do not really get to know Ford or why he is the way he is. This is all told from Lily's perspective
Cowboys and small towns are out of my norm but it was free so gave it a chance.
Unfortunately I gave up at 71%
Book 1 is the introduction of Dame City and Lily who's turn it is this year to try and get a donation from the small town "meanie" for the city council. She try's a few attempts to go up to his ranch which even in a fictional sense I saw as stalking and childish behaviour. Lily is described as stubborn... doll you didn't come across as stubborn to me, you come across as annoying -- the man lives remotely for a reason!
At 71% I was still none the wiser of why Ford lived alone and why he was such a recluse. Recluse being a word, yet the author likes to use simple words like meanie! The issue I have with first person writing is I only knew what Ford looks like I have no idea what Lily looks like so couldn't get an image of her in my head.
Ford could have been written so much better, as I said by 71% as a reader you should know more about him and it may explain his foul language -- which I need in my male leads but it just doesn't work here... and there is no cowboy action by 71% so kinda false advertising and I just gave up.
Perhaps a prologue would have worked better to let the reader know then get into the actual story.
For a short story, this was really good. Loved Lily and Ford, and the storyline was good too. Had me giggling a lot, and had a lump in my throat. I would have liked to know more about Lily and Ford's past as there was not that much detail about it, and maybe a litte more in regards to their HEA. That said, for a short read i loved it and would certainly recommend it.
Lily is a spit fire. I cannot believe she went to Ford's house during the snow fall. At least the got to share their ups and downs when they got caught up in a blizzard.
A town of women called Dame City! Of course it's not entirely man-free or there might not be much story. I loved the grouchy hero and the once-burned, twice shy heroine. And the whole off-beat humour
I did receive this book as a free ARC Copy in exchange for an honest review.
The main characters of the story, Lily & Ford, are in a small town, population less than 1,000. Lily has to go to Ford's place to get a donation for the local Dame City Attraction Council in town. Lily arrived in Dame City, 2 yrs prior, however, she is still the "new person" in town. Lily has been voted to go to Ford's to get a donation from him. Lily looks at everything the council has done in the past to try to get him to donate money. She knows she has to be straight forward with him, no game playing with her.
Lily tries and tries her hardest to get to Ford. Although his barriers are up and in place. Ford has a lot to work through, and it seems as though there is no getting through to him. Lily goes out to Ford's place and nearly freezes to death with a massive blizzard that has hit the area. Ford rescue's Lily from the snow storm and they are safe in his cabin / house for 5 days. Ford directs Lily to cook for him since he is letting her stay there. Now they are locked alone together in the cabin alone. They do connect, with the telling of why Lily isn't with a man, why she doesn't trust men completely.
We the reader never fully understand or get what happened to Ford. Although the author state's Ford tell's Lily, we the reader don't actually know what is going on. I didn't like knowing Lily's story but not Ford's, it's like it's one sided now.
There is foul language in this very short story. There is sex in this book 1 as well.
Katy Branden’s new novel “Dame City-Part 1-Lily,” is a fast-paced enjoyable read that elicits a gamut of emotion from her reader’s. Lily McGibbens is the owner of the local bookstore, The Scarlett Letter, and when she is picked to obtain donations from the crankiest resident of Dame City, Wyoming she finds herself in over her head with her quarry. Ford Gentry has had a tough life and all he wants is to be left alone, but the beautification committee has made it their mission to target him for a contribution to their yearly cause. Lily knows there is more to Ford than meets the eye and she is willing to go the distance to complete her task and to understand the man beneath the cranky exterior. This is a fun-loving book that will make you laugh out loud. I was given this book to read by the author in return for an honest review.
Mrs. Katy Branden generously sent me Dame City Book 1 - Lily. She is an amazing writer and is able to bring to life her character, right from the pages of her books. Strong Handsome Alpha Male Cowboy Hero and a Strong Fierce Independent Book Store Owner Heroin with pasts so different but both suffering, and both seem to need to run from it all. They both are need for a second chance at life, even when it comes so unexpected.
The book is so full of emotions and life. Mrs. Katy Branden brings her characters to life, right off the pages of her book. You will laugh, cry, be sad and get angry right along with the characters. This book is a major page turner. I had such a hard time putting this book down. Before I knew it hours would pass by. LOL!!!! ;-D Thank you so much for this book!!!
I wasn't really sure what to expect with this story but I ended up loving it. Lily is so hysterical in her determination to get Ford to make a donation to the Dame City Council. The way she acts leads to hilarious scenes that just make me laugh, sometimes out-loud. Ford is an interesting character with lots of backstory and Lily is just the person to bring him out of his shell. If you are looking for a quick read with a damaged, sexy cowboy and a determined, independent woman, you must read this book. I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and words here are entirely my own.
This was a quick read, but it was so enjoyable that I read straight through to the end. I loved Lily. She wouldn't take no for an answer and was not going to let Ford push her around.
This story was sweet, funny, and sexy. I'm looking forward to Book 2.
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Dame City: Lily is a cute, sexy short novella telling the story of how Lily McGibbens is set the task of getting Ford Gentry to contribute to the local ladies council for a charity and promotional event for the town.
You need to read how she tried to get past the cranky man's resistance and enjoy a good story.
I <3 this series! It's got a little bit of everything in it. It makes you laugh, it makes you cry and it gives you the feels. The men are strong and the women can hold their own.
