For as long as history can recall, Beronnae has been divided into five kingdoms: the mountains of Telinor, the forests of Maeat, the coastal cities of Eidyn and the riverine grasslands of Dunadd and Nairn. Unable to live peacably side by side, the five kingdoms adhere to formal rules and regulations surrounding warfare, ensuring that combat is kept strictly between those men and women who have been trained to survive it. Although each kingdom has its own codes of conduct, there is one principle upon which everyone agrees: Soldiers go to war. War does not go to the cities. As one of Eidyn’s warriors, Brennin Rheadan has lived his entire life by this precept. But when hostile ships from an unknown land appear on Eidyn’s shores by night, burning down the village of Serengydd and laying waste to civilian lives, Brennin and his comrades are forced to determine how they intend to retaliate - particularly when it becomes clear that the greatest weapons the invaders possess are of an entirely supernatural quality...
Brennin is a loyal member of the King’s Knights and takes the code of knighthood seriously. With his city ruthlessly attacked, his prince calls together an alliance of the neighboring countries to send an army to retaliate against a little known country which lies across a vast ocean. Brennin is anxious to settle the score though worried about the enemy’s use of magecraft—something he would rather avoid at all costs. While combing through some of my older titles on my kindle, I came across Magecraft and found a real gem. This world is unbelievably complex and intriguing. I loved the story and the characters. There was plenty of action as Brennin comes to terms with his code of honor. Well written, and highly recommended!
I am enthralled by the world that Brenin Rheadan inhabits. There is a lot of hinted-at depth to the story that leaves me wanting more. Often, fantasy novels can be very derivative but I found this one to lure me in with just enough detail to keep me guessing. The story progresses well, with enough twists in the plot to pique interest, and with enough dangling hooks to make me eagerly anticipate the next in the series.
I am VERY much looking forward to what comes next.
