The author of over 80 books in a little over a decade of writing, Dan Gutman has written on topics from computers to baseball. Beginning his freelance career as a nonfiction author dealing mostly with sports for adults and young readers, Gutman has concentrated on juvenile fiction since 1995. His most popular titles include the time-travel sports book Honus and Me and its sequels, and a clutch of baseball books, including The Green Monster from Left Field. From hopeful and very youthful presidential candidates to stunt men, nothing is off limits in Gutman's fertile imagination. As he noted on his author Web site, since writing his first novel, They Came from Centerfield, in 1994, he has been hooked on fiction. "It was fun to write, kids loved it, and I discovered how incredibly rewarding it is to take a blank page and turn it into a WORLD."

Gutman was born in New York City in 1955, but moved to Newark, New Jersey the following year and spent his youth there.

Gutman, Dan Mrs. Master is a Disaster! (My Weirdest School, #8), 105 pgs. Illustrated by Jim Paillot CHAPTER BOOK Harper, 2017. $4.99 Content: G.

After Grandparents Day at the school, A.J. is inspired by Alexia’s grandmother who is an inventor. A.J. with the help of his friends, teachers and Alexia’s grandmother decides to invent a “Party Pooper”. The Party Pooper is a heated, light up toilet seat that will have a conversation with the person sitting on it. After making and selling a thousand of these seats, the product malfunctions and starts on fire so they have to take them all back. In the end they say “Oh well”.

This is one of those books that as an adult I have many issues with including, but not limited to, the amount of “potty” talk, characters calling each other “dumbhead” and the unrealitistic fact that teachers put up thousands of their own dollars for the toilet seats and then everyone just said “oh well” when it didn’t work out. That said, my second grade son loves this series. The illustrations are cartoon-ish and entertaining, the humor is right on par for a seven year old boy and the vocabulary is simple and makes for an easy read.

The whole child entrepreneur part was pretty fun, but I did not enjoy how everyone started to give up on school because they owned a business.
