THE PAST IS NEVER DEAD, IT ONLY HIDES. When on a mission to recover some stolen military grade hardware, retired Army Ranger, James Cagney and an elite team of FBI agents discover just how hidden, and just how shocking, the past can be. An Egyptian tomb reveals an ancient secret. A Nazi labyrinth hides a terrible power. And a quest older than civilization sends James and his team on an incredible journey to somewhere very far away. But what Mr. Cagney doesn’t know, is somebody has been there before them…
I loved Book 1 but it took me a bit longer to get into Book 2. While I liked the teaser Prologue (‘Tell me if you can, the value of something lost and forgotten’), I felt that several allusions to events in Book 1 may perhaps impede the initial understanding of new readers to the series. By Parts II and III of the book, as the story evolves, this was no longer an issue and I was in for a ride where Indiana Jones meets Captain Kirk.
Maurice Barkley obviously has a tremendous imagination and a great story-telling ability. The adventure turns into a quest for the intrepid and growing Dance crew, introducing us to peoples and situations that are fun with the right amount of danger that won’t keep you awake at night. With a ‘there came the dawn’ moment and general allusions to budding romances, it is definitely a G-Rated book that would engage any age. I’m looking forward to Book 3 as the motley group unravels the Nazi connection and continues their ‘close encounters’. I received a complimentary copy from the author for an unbiased review.
What a great story of the adventures of the ever-growing Dance band! This story is so well written and the scope, indeed the series, is growing exponentially. I love science fiction and I love historical fiction, the elements of the latter provide an interesting impetus and texture for the former. It is not often the two genres are combined in such an entertaining way. The author excels at dialogue and action, scene setting and description are in measure quantities that complement the story so very well. "The Secret Path" gets 4.8 stars from me.
