As a demon, Belial has existed for millennia. Having missed his first chance at bonding with his amina a thousand years before, and with his second thousand years of service coming to a close, he’s keen to seek out that special someone. He needs to bond with that one key person, binding him to the mortal plane and freeing him from the Horseman of War’s service. Before seeking out that special person, Belial heads up one last mission to incite a skirmish between a vampire coven and a group of humans. To his surprise, he scents his amina near the vampire coven about to be attacked. Belial comes face to face with the blood-crazed vampire Gabriel…who Belial learns was tortured and experimented on by the very humans set to attack the coven. For the first time in his life, Belial joins a side. While he might save the coven, can he figure out a way to save his own anima…giving them both a chance at a future?
Belial is a demon in the service of the Horseman of War. His job is literally to stir up trouble and start conflicts, but when he’s tasked with starting a war between some hunters and a coven of vampires, he discovers his anima, the demon equivalent of a mate or beloved. He missed his last chance, and now his window is narrowing to bond—or face another millennium in the service of his master.
The problem is that his anima is a vampire who has been tortured and is not in his right mind. It seems we have actually met this vampire, Gabriel, in a previous episode, so we know that he has been tortured and driven so out of his mind that he has killed humans in his bloodlust. He’s still so out of control that he’s been essentially jailed in the Coven’s home because he can’t be trusted. Belial knows he needs to get Gabriel to trust him and help him to heal. f he can’t accomplish that, well, then his hopes of bonding and getting his reward for all his years of service will be dashed.
Of course, Belial is also bent on making those who have tortured Gabriel pay. Turns out that plays right into his plans of starting the war between the so-called priests and the vampires. If Belial can exact his revenge, heal his mate, help the coven and bond with Gabriel, then he can call it a day. This is a tall order and will require some additional help, but luckily, Belial and Gabriel both have good friends in their corner.
Well, this was bit fascinating. In this story, we got to visit the plane of the Horsemen and the demons, and it’s really interesting. Belial is another one of the demons that is just doing his job when he gets caught up with the paranormals. I really liked him and the Horseman. I hope we get more in this realm because I thought it really added to this series and this story. And, I was really happy to see Gabriel get a second chance after all of his suffering. This was one of my favorites in this series, for sure.
Gabriel is a vampire driven mad by bloodlust. He was tortured by scientists and drained of his blood until all he knows is thirst for blood. He’s killed indiscriminately as a result.
Belial is one of the demons of the Horseman of War (remember this track from Book 5, Balthazar and Peter?). He’s just about 2000 years old- he missed his first crack at an anima and now he’s almost ready to lose his second if he can’t pull Gabriel back from the edge.

This was very cleverly done. Charlie showed us how Belial was able to do the “impossible” in a way that makes sense and is “believable” in a paranormal way.
I like the four steps required to bond and the way Belial got the ball rolling.
The angst felt real and not manufactured, and the bonding was actually as easy as it should be between two people who recognize their soul-mates.
This was terrible! I am so disappointed! The characters, Belial and Gabriel, were actually great. Belial has just finished his second thousand year of service to the Demon Horseman War and is now searching for his Amina. He was unable to bond with his first Amina bc of sabotage from other demons. This time around he meets his Amina but Gabriel is a vamp in the throws of blood lust. What would have made this book at least a little interesting is if Gabriel was actually a reincarnation of The original Amina. There was also a background story involving a demon hunting priest and unfortunately it was boring and silly. At the end there was a sad attempt to connect the evil priest to Gabriel but it was not successful. The whole book was rushed and just felt pointless. SAD.
Somehow this just didn't quite follow through for me. I was expecting more of a fight to get past the bloodlust and there really wasn't a lot to it.
And when they get to sex, Belial's 'speech' was...It felt like a statement made with no feeling, a repetition. 'I will let my juices relax your chute and then slide my member deep inside'. That is a my paraphrase not the actual words! No passion felt behind it.
On a major re-re-read of the Stone Ridge world. I usually enjoy Charlies' short stories and novellas (the occasional one is a clunkier) but I have found that the best way to read them is to series binge and read them in the recommended reading order for the 'world' instead of by series. This gives a much more satisfying read with a more consistent plot line and world. Even the clunkers become acceptable as a small part of the whole. The characters are still good, and as usual Charlie uses stereo types with skill and develops characters indirectly. The only characters that develop depth are those who appear and then reappear frequently. As individual reads? 2 or 3 - though 3 is more common. This one? a four.
This was an excellent book, with a mating that was different from the norm. The demon, Belial, finds his mate who is a vampire, Gabriel, and has gone feral, and through their mating bond he is eventually himself again. I enjoyed that aspect of the story and found it to be very imaginative not to mention captivating. Although, it did end a bit abruptly, the two main characters were able to accomplish what they set out to do together The priests in this tale are definitely not the good guys, but the plot as a whole was very enjoyable.
Just goes to show you can’t judge a book by its title or it’s cover. This was probably the best of the books by Charlie Richards that I’ve read so far.

Charlie Richards always comes up with new and adventive ways to tell an amazing story. I love how she includes different mythological creatures as well regular shifters to tell an interesting story as well.
I always enjoy this series. If you have never read these before know that you should check out Charlie Richards website since this series crosses over three other series she writes. She has a reading order list to help out with the book order. They are short but enjoyable.
