After the First Three Minutes: The Story of Our Universe

Rate this book
How does our Universe evolve? And how did structures like stars and galaxies form? In recent years, scientists' understanding of these profound questions has developed enormously. This book presents a clear and detailed picture of contemporary cosmology for the general reader. Unlike existing popular books on cosmology, After the First Three Minutes does not gloss over details, nor shy away from explaining the underlying concepts. Instead, with a lucid and informal style, the author introduces all the relevant background and then carefully pieces together an engaging story of the evolution of our Universe. We are left with a state-of-the-art picture of scientists' current understanding in cosmology, and a keen taste of the excitement of this fast-moving science. Throughout, no mathematics is used; and all technical jargon is clearly introduced and reinforced in a handy glossary at the end of the book. For general readers who want to get to grips with what we really do and don't know about our Universe, this book provides an exciting and uncompromising read.

An overview of what we know (or what we knew in 1998) about the creation of the universe, galaxies, stars, etc. Written in a style that contains the scientific jargon without the technical mathematics or background, this is an interesting read for an appropriate audience. People without a university level background in some science might find it too dense and full of jargon whereas someone with a good knowledge of physics might find it too simplistic. I wouldn't recommend this book to everyone, but to someone in my position (college-level science classes but no background in advanced physics) I think this book is a good fit.

The first few chapters, which contained a very accelerated background in basic physics, were a little painful as the author did his best to cram everything he thought a lay reader would need to understand the book in a condensed form. As I made my through this overly detailed and only somewhat unilluminating section, I considered giving up this book despite its short length. However, the book really hit its stride in chapter 4 when the subject switched from a crash course in introductory physics to cosmology. The rest of the book flowed beautifully and clearly, carrying the reader across about red shifts, quasars, star / galaxy / supercluster formation and the evidence for dark matter and its form.

Quite scientific yet very lucid explanation of the origination of the Universe and the formation of stars and galaxies. Insights into scientific theory and discoveries that led to the current understanding.
