It’s been three years since Emma Cochran endured the worst possible tragedy—the sudden, unexpected death of her four-year-old son. The emotional trauma tore her marriage apart, but now her divorce is final and she wants to begin again. She’s found happiness at last with her fiancé, Luke, who is eager to start a family with her.
On the other side of the country, single mother Bev Hutchinson watches helplessly as her five-year-old daughter Louise drowns in a high-profile boating accident. Miraculously, Louise is brought back to life by first-responders, then claims she went to heaven. The news causes a media frenzy surrounding the little girl, and Bev does everything she can to shield herself and her daughter from the relentless swarming of the press.
Lives collide when Emma becomes obsessed with the story of the child, thousands of miles away, who drowned and went to heaven. She wants to connect with the mother, but Emma’s fiancé is against the idea because he wants her to let go of her grief and move on.
But sometimes, moving on isn’t the right choice when miracles are leading you back to your past—toward something, or someone, who was your destiny all along.

Julianne MacLean is one of my favourite authors and The Color of Heaven series is my favourite series. THE COLOR OF A SILVER LINING (THE COLOR OF HEAVEN SERIES, #13) by Julianne MacLean, which can be easily read as a stand alone, has a gorgeous cover! This story of love, secrets, trust, tragedy, second chances, miracles and hope is one of Julianne MacLean's finest!
Bev and Louise in Halifax on Canada's east coast and Emma, Luke and Carter in Victoria on Canada's west coast seemed authentic and real. I could feel their joy, pain, doubts, faith, hope and love. Julianne MacLean masterfully weaves together their stories.
Single mother Beverly Hutchinson, her sister Claire, and Bev's 5-year-old daughter Louise went for a day cruise on the tall ship Dalila. This wonderful sailing experience on an old fashioned square rigger was interrupted by a meteorological phenomenon called a "micro-burst." What happened next had me reading and quickly turning the pages. What happened to Louise? Would Bev find her daughter? Would Louise survive this tragic incident?
Although I did not want this story to end, I could not put the book down until I was finished. I highly recommend THE COLOR OF A SILVER LINING and give it 5 shining stars!
Special thanks to Julianne MacLean for giving me an advanced copy of this book, allowing me to read it and write a review of my own thoughts on it.
The Color Of A Silver Lining by Julianne MacLean is such a beautiful contemporary love story. It is a love story with a difference as it is about the unending love that two mothers have for their children. The story is heartbreakingly beautiful with its raw emotions. "All I wanted to do, was love my daughter." The novel is a study in unending grief. "There are no words to console me." There is nothing anyone can do or say to make the grieving person feel better. Life has changed and will never be the same again. You survive as best you can. "Nobody can push you to be ready. You're ready when you're ready." It's one day at a time. Grief ties in with guilt and forgiveness and blame. People tend to blame themselves and others for things they did or didn't do. Guilt weighs heavy and forgiveness seems far away. As lives crumble, so families are torn apart. The novel is not without hope. A hope of heaven. A hope that death is not the end. A hope that death is not the final 'goodbye' but a 'see you later.' Some are sceptical. Others are more open. Julianne MacLean shows how we need to view the world through the eyes of a child. We need their faith, their awe and wonder, their honesty and their trust. Trust is another theme. Trust needs to be earnt and built upon. Julianne MacLean has written a beautiful story. It is heartfelt. It tears at the reader's emotions. Written in the first person, from three different points of view, the reader becomes intimately acquainted and involved in the action. I always love Julianne MacLean's stories. They are works of great beauty that speak to my heart and soul. A delightfully wonderful story. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
This an amazing story and all the time I was reading it, the "Six degrees of separation" was going through my head. You have two woman, one on the east coast Emma and one the west coast Bev, and both have suffered tragically with their children. As this story evolves and it brings both woman heartache and joy at the same time but neither is aware of it at the time. And there is one man Luke, that both woman are or have been involved with that ties this story together. But at the heart of this story for me is little Louise that brings hope and healing and most of all love, when she is the Silver Lining of this story. I was lucky enough to be given an advance copy of this book by the author. I have always been a fan of her historical books and this is the first book in her woman's fiction that I have read and it won't be the last.
I fell in love with Luke and Louise. I'm not too crazy about Emma. Emma lost her son and has been grieving hard. Her husband had been so cruel to her and so they divorced. Emma was ready to move on with Luke. He has helped her so much. Bev and Louise go on a sailing ship which is struck by a wind that causes the boat to sink. They barely make it off the boat alive. In fact, Louise does die for a short time. When she comes back, she has a story about the place and people that she met. Her story causes quite an uproar. Luke finds out that Louise is his daughter and he really wants to get to know her. All of their lives are intertwined and fate has stepped in to give them everything that they wanted.
Color of a Silver Lining did not disappoint Julianne brought an interesting topic into the romance of two couples . I enjoy the story very much and it was an easy read.
I loved the way the book made me feel, but I didn’t feel like it had an ah-ha moment or really crazy twist like her books I usually do. It definitely made me think about heaven more though.
This was an amazing read. The story builds and builds and then suddenly there is a twist and a turn and it all comes together. The saying that every cloud has a silver lining is resoundingly brought home and this story has really touched my heart. Julianne, once again you have outdone yourself. I'm sitting here wondering how you are going to top this one. Definitely a very highly recommended story and I'm very happy to say that I loved every minute of it. An advance copy of the book was provided by the author at no cost and this is my unbiased review.
This series has the added effect of making a person think. Are we making the most of ourselves? Are we where we are suppose to be? Are we with who we are meant for? In Silver Lining, we start with Beverly, her daughter Louise, and sister Claire going for a boat ride to see the lighthouses for Beverly's birthday. Due to a micro-burst storm the boat goes down and Louise is shown Heaven. While Bev tries to protect her from the press, Louise asks questions about what she sees and feels. While this is going on, there is an event on the other side of the country that has just as profound an effect. Emma has lost her son to an accidental drowning. She goes into a depression and her husband, Carter, takes his anger and grief out on Emma. They end in divorce and she finally starts to move on when the boating accident happens to Bev. Emma has met Luke and they are working on getting her back to where she wants to be. They believe they are in Love. When Emma asks questions about if there is a Heaven or not and if the people are to be believed or not. Now Carter wants to find out if it is truth or not and convinces Emma to go with him to a physic. This starts feelings to erupt and not all of them good. When Luke finally sees the picture of Louise and Beverly he contacts Beverly to find out if Louise is really his child. Luke is dealing with wanting a family and Emma is dealing with the loss of her family. Beverly is dealing with protecting her family. As things start to show that what we want, need, or desire fall where they may; our characters evolve into a magnificent story that will have you not wanting to put the book down. This series is so well thought out and developed. You can just put yourself in any story from this series.
The Color of a Silver Lining is a beautiful story packed with love, forgiveness, and second chances. It is an inspirational story of life and love in both Heaven and Earth. When Emma Cochran, along wither soon-to-be ex-husband and longtime sweetheart, experience the unexpected death of their son, they both find they grieve differently. Emma has moved on and found happiness with her new fiancé Luke. She finds that she still cannot move past her son’s death. On the other side of the country, single mother Bev Hutchinson watches her own daughter drown in a boating accident. When 5 year old Louise miraculously lives she tells about her visit to Heaven and all those people she met while there. She is also told to meet her father whom Bev has kept quiet about. As these two stories collide, you begin to see love and healing take place. When I first started this story I was not sure what to expect. Having never read a book in the Color of Heaven series I was interested in the character’s view of Heaven. I fell in love with all the characters. They each had their own unique lie and trials they faced. I could not put the book down! I found myself just wanting to know what would happen next. Julianne MacLean did a fantastic job of bringing them all together. If you enjoy a story full of love and hope this is one for you. It is clean with very mild language. Your heart will be touched as you watch each character overcome their trials and learn to forgive. *Please note I received a copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own
I was excited to see another "Color" book by Ms. MacLean. I have enjoyed all of them because they are always fresh and well written. They are a series but can be read alone. I recommend reading all of them in order to see how wonderfully Ms. MacLean weaves the stories but makes each one different and interesting. This one is actually two stories in one. Bev, a single, unwed mother and her young daughter Louise are in a boating accident and Louise was clinically dead but brought back. She told realistic stories about heaven and this brought unwanted fame into their lives. Story two is about Emma and Carter who have been in love since forever. Soon after their marriage they experience an unimaginable tragedy that breaks their marriage apart. Through the healing she meets Luke, falls in love and decides to give marriage another try. Luke is a very likeable character so you want him to find love and happiness, but Emma is not his destiny. This is where Ms. MacLean excels in bringing people together is a weird and wonderful way. I don't want to give away the ending but the author has a way of showing us that through tragedy and pain, heartache and sorrows, people can find redemption and happiness. I was given an ARC copy of this book and review it with complete honesty. I highly recommend this book and all the other "Color" books.
Ms MacLean just keeps amazing with each book in this wonderful series. Even when you think you might know where the "surprise" is hiding, when it comes out, it always makes you smile, drop your jaw, and just be amazed. The "color" of this book was when Bev's 5-year old daughter temporarily stopped breathing while submerged underwater while on a tour ferry boat ride that is hit by a freak weather phenomenon. Bev brings her daughter back to life through the CPR that she knows as a nurse. Bev is a single mom to the child. In the meantime, Emma and Carter lost their young toddler, Samuel, to a tragic kiddie pool drowning, and as a result, lost their marriage to the grief and out-of-control emotions. Luke, a well-to-do financial guru, is deeply set on his and Emma's relationship, giving her tremendous support in the loss of her son, and looking forward to their marriage and starting their own family. Where these 4 individuals and young 6-year old Louise, travel to end at the "silver lining" is tastefully and artfully written by Ms MacLean, keeping you on the edge of your reading seat, and you are smiling and frowning with all the feels in between. If you've read any of the series books, you must include this one as well.

This book felt different from other books I have read. You really do get all the feels in this story.
The Color of a silver Lining (The Color of Heavens Series-Book #13) By Julianne MacLean The Color of a Silver Lining is book thirteen in The Color of Heaven series. I have not read the other books in this series ,but I did not have any problems following this one. Ms MacLean weaves a story of secrets , hope, forgiveness, and second chances. This is my first to read of this author, but hopefully it want be my last. This story is almost like reading two different stories , but it all comes together. This story involves two different women who are far away from each other. The Color of a Silver Lining is a very touching and emotional story with some twist and turns. I was given a complimentary copy of this book, but was not told that I had to give a positive review.
This is a beautifully crafted story of new beginnings and hope and love. The further I read the more engrossed I became. All the characters, Bev, Louise, Emma, Carter and Luke, were so real to me. Their pain and their joy, their dreams and their hopes all got to me. I've only ever read Julianne Maclean's historicals before and I admit to being a little apprehensive about reading one of her contemporary novels but me concerns were completely unfounded. She has nailed it with this story. It truly tugged st my heart strings. Just a lovely, lovely story.
I am a new reader of Ms MacLean stories, and I have to say I am impressed. The story is engaging , heartbreaking, filled with tragedy, but also, hope . As hard as it is to imagine when an individual has had to endure the devastation of the loss of a child, God works in miraculous ways. And indeed, behind every cloud there is a silver lining. Be forewarn , you will need a box of tissues. I was gifted this copy. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
“Every book in the Color of Heaven series opens my heart and mind to new possibilities in life. With each story I cry and feel alive. Color of a Silver Lining encourages you to see love here on earth and stretch your mind to believe in the connection of spirit. A truly beautifully written novel that inspires hope; even after tragedy.”
I read this whole series back-to-back. They are thought provoking, uplifting and wonderful stories. As of the writing of this review, this was the last book in the series. I really hope she writes more of these books. I loved them. 💖

Review:
This book has a real positive feel to it with a bit of a mystical touch. The plot flows well with the right amount of intrigue a bit of mystique and plenty of raw emotions. The characters are kind and interesting; their personalities are well developed and their actions are explained in detail. This made them realistic.
This book is part of the Color of Heaven series but each book can be read as on is own.
Overall:
This is a nicely written uplifting story, thought provoking at times with a few twists and turns. The characters are interesting; their personalities are well developed and realistic. The story flows well is easy to follow and captures you from the start.
As usual, a tearjerker indeed! I read it all in one night! This is a very emotional, heartbreaking and joyful story. You will feel just about every emotion. It tells the story of Emma, who has recently divorced after losing her son a few years back. Her son dies while she was home. Understandably this caused a giant rift in her marriage. But then she meets and falls in love with Luke and her healing begins. Through Luke, Emma finally understands that she could not have avoided the tragedy. Emma and Luke begin to plan their wedding. Seemingly inconsequential, Emma sees a news report about a little girl who has almost drowned and is claiming to have been in heaven with loved ones. She decides to study the subject. Luke doesn’t really believe in such things but doesn’t let it bother him when Emma and her ex go see a medium. He figures they need closure. Her ex then decides to sell the family home and asks Emma to go help pack her son’s room. As they spend more time together, they soon realize that time has healed old wounds. Emma does break Luke’s heart. But as Luke looks at a webpage Emma left open on the story of the little girl who went to Heaven, he realizes he knows the mother. Looking at picture of the little girl, he soon realizes he must make contact. And when he does, he finds that he’s lost nothing and gained everything! These stories always make you ponder upon life and the choices we make. While life sometimes throws us off, it would appear that life is really just setting you straight.
As of this writing, this is the last book of the series and I read them all in order. The last 2 weren’t really related to the first 11 which was odd bc there was always something that tied them all together - some tie to the previous books in each next one. It didn’t make me enjoy the last 2 less but I did like that about the other books.
So, this one is a continuation/tied to the prior - The Color of a Christmas Miracle. In this one, we read the story of Bev and her daughter Louise. Bev is a single mom who got pregnant after a one-night stand. In the last book her sister was struggling with infertility and then Bev gets pregnant by accident.
The other characters are Emma, Luke & Carter. Emma and Carter’s son drowned in the backyard on Emma’s watch so they divorced as their grief drove them to anger and cruelty towards each other. Emma moves on and meets and gets engaged to Luke. Then Emma and Carter drift back towards each other as they meet with a psychic who contacts their son.
There is a connection between the two stories and as usual, everything works out in the end after much heartache on the part of all involved. There is a supernatural aspect of the story, another common theme in the books.
I liked the books and how they wrap up, though it all happens kind of quickly and we learn about it all in an epilogue vs it being part of the story, but it’s satisfying as usual.
I like other books from this author and even though this is the last book (maybe) of the series, I enjoyed it immensely as well as other stand alone books of hers also.
Absolutely loved this book - The Color of a Silver Lining. I may have said this about some of the others, but I think this is my favourite book in The Color of Heaven series. I believe the only one I am missing from my list is The Color of Time.
'There was a tingling in all my nerve endings.' - I highlighted this quote from the book, as the whole story gave me tinglings in my nerve endings. I definitely believe in a Heaven and in the beauty of it, but I have never pictured it quite as little Louise described her experience, but I am sure that our Great God who created such a beautiful Universe has the ability to show each of us what we need to see and feel. I have stood near the bedside of a very dear sister-in-law whose eyes popped opened and then whose face lit up with the most beautiful smile as she passed away, and that was a great assurance for me to know that we will go into another realm of happiness, and see beauty that we have never seen before.
This author, Julianne MacLean, did an amazing job of this beautiful story of Emma, Carter, Luke, Bev, Louise, Claire and Scott, and I am looking forward to reading more about some of them in The Color of a Christmas Miracle.
What an amazing story! As always Julianne MacLean has outdone herself one emotionally wrenching story. Beverly almost lost her child in a boating accident for Bev that almost destroyed her, a single mother Louise is her life. While trying to revive her daughter Louise is taken to heaven where she meets a little boy who accidentally drowned. The son of Emma and Carter while the are trying to go on after the tragedy their marriage suffers. Emma has gone on met a man -Luke unknown to all of them their lives are interwoven through Emma and Carters tragic loss and the end of their marriage, will bring new beginnings for all of them. Sometimes life has a way of getting us to the point where we should be even though at the time of pain and loss it makes no sense but it all works out in the end. You have to read the story to see what I mean and I won't give it away you'll be surprised at the very happy ending. I always recommend Julianne MacLean books they have substance and real life experiences that truly speak to your heart. If books were rated ten stars this would be a ten !!! I received a complimentary copy from the author for my honest unbiased opinion
The Color of a Silver Lining (The Color of Heaven #13) should come with a coupon for a free box of tissues to be redeemed before you start reading. You will need them. Tears and smiles will be had before you finish reading this one. It is an amazing story that gives hope after tragedy. Julianne MacLean has out done herself with this story of mothers who have suffered heartache, now needing healing and love, in essence they need to find the silver lining. The intricate plot of this novel is wonderfully written causing the reader to ponder the important questions of life. Fans of contemporary woman’s fiction will find this like all of the series to be a compelling read. Highly recommend to anyone who needs to see the silver lining of life. The publisher/ author gave me a complimentary ARC of the book.
Such a heartwarming and thought provoking novel! This book is such a well written and beautiful, contemporary love story! The author touches on so many emotions; the unimaginable and tragic loss of a child, and they understand, understandable, anger, and blame the tears apart the parents of four-year-old Sammy. On another side of the country, a mother almost loses her daughter Louise in a violence storm leading her to have near death experiences. Louise sees heaven and accurately describes and draws those have passed, although she has never met them! This book really made me think! I love thecharacter characters , I love their journeys and how at the end what’s meant to be will be! An easy read highly recommend!
The Co!or of A Silver Lining (The Color of Heaven Series Book 13)(
The story of Bev, Emma, Louise, Luke, and Carter. Luke and Bev had a one night stand five years ago and she a a daughter name Louise which she did not tell him about. Emma and Carter lost their son, Sam which he blame her for his dead. Luke and Emma are planning to marry and then thinks change. Bev and Louise were in a boating accident and Louise all most dead and she said she when to heaven and met her grandparents. And now they want her to met her father. Can the right couple get together? Great story.
Fantastic listen of this series ender. I’m so happy I found this series. It’s romantic at times, mysterious at times, heartwarming and even magical at times. As in real magic. It encompassed all sorts of situations people face in life. The good and the bad.
This particular one has two stories going on at the same time on different sides of Canada. How they end up intertwined is the story. Of course, one couple I liked way more than the other. This also features a near death experience. And a little girl that I adored. That’s all I am saying, except to say I highly recommend the whole series. Narration was 4 stars for me.
The Color of a Silver Lining was delightful. Everyone is happy in the end. A young single mother and her 5-year old daughter go for a sail on a tall masted ship. Up comes a freak weather pattern and the ship is sunk with 6 people losing their lives. Far across the country on the opposite coast a couple lost their young son in a pool accident and now they are getting a divorce. How do they all get from total rock bottom to their happy endings? For some it's a psychic, some get their heartbroken, a newscast, a phonecall, a drawing, and one even gets a round trip to heaven. They each have to come to the understanding in their own way. A clean, non-religious love story. Recommended.
This was the third book I read in The Color of Heaven series. The first and second one I read, I saw no connections between the two. I was very surprised to see this continued with the same characters as the second one I read. I didn't expect that. Now I am wondering if I should start back with number one in the series just to be sure I didn't miss something. I might just have to do that. I started with #11 then 12 because I was interested to read another to see what it was like. Number 13 popped up on the by the same author and I thought why not? Especially since it was another Kindle Unlimited book. Now I am compelled to read more.
This is one of the best books I have ever read! The story line, the characters, the descriptions are all perfection! Bev has a 5-yr old daughter, Louise. Emma & Carter had a a boy, Sammy age 4, who drowned in a small plastic pool. They divorce because of blame. Emma meets Luke & they become engaged. Bev, Louise & Bev’s sister, Claire, had decided to take a sight-seeing cruise & a storm comes up & the ship goes down. All 3 ended up in a lifeboat. Louise was not breathing. Bev, a nurse, gives her daughter CPR & Louise gains consciousness. She describes what she saw in heaven & who she met in heaven. There are a few twists & turns the reader has to read!
As this story came to an end, I found myself a little sad because I want more... This is why I typically do not read this type of series - it's never enough.
To be fair, it's never enough in my typical reads either. 😩
Although I thought some of these stories were better than others, I wouldn't rate any of them less than a 3.8⭐️.
Almost everyone knows that I like it spicy - these books are not that, but they are heartwarming. They are particularly a pleasure to read if you are feeling the need to have wholesome stories that lean towards acknowledging some supernatural phenomenon.
