Pep Guardiola: The Evolution

Rate this book
For three extraordinary seasons at Bayern Munich, Marti´ Perarnau was given total access around the German super club – to its players, its backroom staff, its board members and, above all, to its manager, Pep Guardiola. In the follow-up to his critically acclaimed account of Guardiola’s first full season at Bayern, Pep Confidential, Perarnau now lifts the lid on the Catalan’s whole tenure in Bavaria. Pep The Evolution takes the reader on a journey through three action packed seasons as Bayern smashed domestic records yet struggled to emulate that dominance in Europe, analysing Guardiola’s management style through key moments on and off the field. Perarnau reveals how Guardiola improved as a manager at Bayern despite failing to land the ultimate prize in European football, examines his decision to leave Germany to take up the challenge at Manchester City and how his managerial style will continue to evolve in the Premier League. This is more than the story of three seasons with one of the biggest clubs in the game. It is a portrait and analysis of a manager and the footballing philosophies that have beguiled the world.

If you have read the first book, Pep Confidential, and were expecting more of the same, then be prepared to be disappointed. This book is a let down compared to the first one.

You can tell straight away that Perarnau obviously feels some sort of debt to Guardiola, as the first book was so eye opening and in depth, that he has decided not only to reign in the criticisms of Pep, but to remove them altogether. The book is a cheerleading book for Pep, not that he needs one, but it lists none of his decisions that didn't work out, there is no in depth critique of his failures, the CL semi final loses jump to mind instantly, but more on that later.

If you didn't know anything about Pep, and then read this book, you'd think he has never made a wrong decision in his life. Perarnau touches on the leagues that he won since the last book was written, but never in any real great detail. The book focuses, or attempts to focus on how Pep has evolved as both a person and a coach since the first book was written, but it ends up looking like Perarnau is playing to Guardiola's ego, rather than trying to tell a concise story about his final two seasons at Bayern.

There is a lot on his tactics, as to be expected, but only when they work. There are pages and pages given to how Guardiola would drill his players, time and time again in the new formations he wants them to play, and you can get an insight into just how much of an obsessive and a perfectionist he is. What also comes through loud and clear, and this part is very handy as Guardiola begins his second season at City, is his desire to win, and how he holds himself responsible when things don't go to plan.

Also, Perarnau, explains Pep's post match press conferences, which, to anyone who has seen some of the more spikier of Pep's interviews, especially last season, will get a better understanding into just how and why Pep looks or sounds unhappy in interviews, even when his team loses, and why he sounds so upbeat, even after a defeat, which was very interesting.

However, the reason I only gave this book 2 stars was the one section that I brought the book for, hoping to have, or read, a forensic discussion of how his Bayern side were beaten in the 2015 CL semi finals by Leo Messi and Barcelona. Especially that 1st leg which seemed to be going to plan until Messi changed things by scoring the opener, and then from there, Bayern completely capitulated, going on to lose 3-0 and effectively put Barca into the final. This game, which for me, defined Guardiola's time in Europe at Bayern, is barely mentioned. Which, in and of itself, is no big deal. But, in the first book, there is a forensic analysis of Bayern's 0-4 defeat at home to Real Madrid in the 2014 CL semi final. No discussion about tactics, or formations, or gambles that didn't come off, or of the game plan on how he contained the MSN (Messi-Suarez-Neymar) for almost 75 minutes of the game, or on how his game plan unravelled and his team capitulated. Like I said, so unlike the first book where that whole Real Madrid semi final is unpicked in brutal fashion that doesn't make for good reading for Pep.
And that analysis is honestly brutal. However, the same event a year later, against Pep's club (player, captain, manager) barley warrants a mention, which I put down to the fact that Perarnau wanted to get back into Pep's good books. The reason to omit any mention of this defeat, made me realise that this book was not written with the same aim as the first one; to explore the mystery about Pep the manager. Instead, what we have is almost a propaganda book, explaining how much Pep has evolved from his time at Barca, to him now about to take up the City manager's post.

A must read if you are a Pep fan, or a Manchester City fan, or if you read the first book, but not if you are a general football fan, who likes an honest appraisal of a manger. Not a character burnishing book. I was very disappointed with this, I must say.

I was hesitant between 2 and 3 stars. I think it deserves 2.5 stars. The book included some interesting statistics on Pep's 3-year tenure at Bayern and elaborated explanations on his tactics, not just overall but drilled down into some of the specific matches as the author had open access to Guardiola and his team. It was really amazing how detailed some of the explanations of the tactics, not only of the team but at a player level and taking into consideration the dynamics of the particular match (in some cases, 3 different formations/tactics altogether in a single match).

The book, however, for some intermittent periods, gets dry and dull. It is not a novel and won't expect it to be but at least add some flair into it and make some drama out of it as it is the usual case with biographies.

Also, the book repeats itself in several instances. It repeats the general notion of Pep's thinking of the game and his overall strategy/tactics (or let's say, philosophy of the game) over and over again.

The repetitive and expressionless parts of the book is what downgraded the book by 1.5 stars. Otherwise, it could have score 4 stars in my opinion.

On a side note, it may improve a bit your verdict on Pep's Bayern days and look into it more positively (as it did in my case).

Unfortunately, like so many sequels or follow-ups this was a disappointment compared to its predecessor. However in the authors defense given that Pep confidential is one of the best soccer books written in the past 10 years. It would be hard to craft another book up to that standard.

If Pep Confidential is the reputable first album with multiple strong tracks, a notable single or two, and a consistent theme throughout its symphonic output, then Pep Evolution is the swing-for-the-fences concept album that whilst promising in bursts, could do with a bit more fine tuning.

The most interesting thing, as always, is the tactical side of the prose. The rest of it, whilst mostly entertaining, does possess a certain undeniable whiff of the author brownnosing their subject. Pep Guardiola is a fantastic coach, yes. Pep Guardiola is one of the greatest architectural students ever of the Cryuffian cathedral, yes. But I'm not entirely convinced the sun shines that brightly out of EVERY one of Pep's orifices, Mr. Perarnau.

Here's to hoping Pep Revolution returns to the roots of Pep Confidential and the author find a way to be a bit more balanced in their assessment of Pep's work at Manchester City🤞

I feel like 2 stars may be a stretch. Very disappointing after a great first book. This one seems more like an advert for Guardiola than an honest behind the scenes book. If you didn't know anything about Pep, and then read this book, you'd think he is perfect. There is a lot on his tactics (written in a repetitive and boring way), as expected, but only when they work.

Quotes:

"In football, most people prefer the status quo because they fear making a mistake. It's like a primitive sub-culture where criticism is not tolerated and people protect and defend estabilished ideas. People in the game dislike anyone who questions them because it makes them uncomfortable and nobody enjoys being uncomfortable."

"I told you. Benfica are a strong team. People seem to think that if a team's not from Spain or Germany or England, then it's bound to be rubbish. If people took a bit more notice of the Portuguese league, they'd realise that they've got some damn good teams."

When Pep Guardiola left Barceolna in 2012 there was one huge question hanging on him. He had grown up in Barcelona, came through the youth system to break through in their first team. His managerial career started with Barcelona B team. Hew knew Barcelona and its culture better than anybody else. How could he thrive elsewhere?

When I read Perarnau's last book on Guardiola which described his first season at Bayern and the preparation he went through. It is debatable that his time at Bayern Munich can be as considered as success, at least on the domestic front, I'd say they were dominating. Big clubs want European success and Pep could not do the same at Bayern as he did in Barcelona. This book describes Guardiola's three seasons at Bayern Munich with constant anecdotes from the players and staff of the club. It discuss in-depth how Guardiola's obsession with to reach next level changed players and the impact they had on their careers.

This book take its reader further while analysing Guardiola's management style through key moments off and on field. Perarnau reveals how Guardiola improved as a manager at Bayern despite failing to land the ultimate prize in European football, examines his decision to leave Germany to take up the challenge at Manchester City and how his managerial style will continue to evolve in the Premier League.

I like Perarnau's writing style. It is written with same enthusiasm and well-researched as his last book: Pep Confidential. To understand and study the genius of Guardiola, this book is a perfect match. I am not saying this book is a must read of Guardiola or Manchester City fan in general but rather than it is for anyone who loves the game or is obssessed by it as I am.

4 out of 5!

Absolutely enjoyed reading this book. I understand that there could be some bias in the perspective of the author but I think this book gives readers (who will likely never meet Pep) as close of an understanding as to who Pep really is as not only a successful coach, but also as a human being. The book really bring Pep down to earth and portrays a much different individual who is very humble, hardworking, creative, and passionate about the game and everything that he is about of.

Having read the first Book by Perarnau, I feel like this book is even more appropriate for true followers of the sport who enjoy the tactics, strategies, and the development of the sport. As a grassroots soccer coach I really enjoyed the in depth behind the scene game preparation build up stories, and the tactically explanations the author provides from Peps point of view. The book also goes into detail about Peps influences, mentors, and the positional play model among other things.

I've watch most of Peps games over the last three years and I even keep some of my favorites on my DVR (until I need more space). It's really cool to read the build up, during game analysis, and post game stories told in the book (like the 2016 Juve Champions League matches) and then re-watch the games and see the formation changes, substitutions, and tactics played out in real life. As an Arsenal fan I was hoping Pep move to the EPL would be as Wenger's successor but it's hard not to watch to see the guy succeed after the experience of reading The Evolution.

On the plus side: seems like the author had access to many meetings and information that is normally well guarded in the secretive world of soccer. And Pep certainly has an obsessed way of working, with eye for a lot of details, but also team building. Truely a great coach. Parts also have in-depth tactical reviews, tailored to a specific opponent, very insightfull.

But the writing felt sluggish to me (perhaps the translation from Spanish to Dutch), there was no real flow and parts felt drawn out (yes, Thomas Müller is a clown and Lahm is serious, apparently, it bears repeating).

I can well imagine this is a great book for others, but it didn't work out for me.

The book was a let-down for me for a few reasons:

1) it is not a biography, there's no background/history of Pep, how he grew up ... etc.
2) it focuses solely on Pep's time in Bayern Munich whereas I mainly followed his time in Barca, and ends when he moved to Manchester City.
3) too much cheerleading, meaning there is little fair analysis of the main character like what we sees in other great biographies such as those by Walter Isaacson.

That said, we still get to understand why Pep succeeds, which is his obsessive drive for perfection.

I was a massive fan of Pep Confidential. This one definitely disappointed though. While there was some great content and insight in training, games and mentality, most of the book spent too much time as a love letter to Pep. Just as much as we want to hear the details of his successes, Some more insight into his failures would’ve been great but they are just skimmed through quickly. I struggled to get through this one and maintain interest, where as I couldn’t put Pep confidential down at the time

Unlike book 1, there are lots of bs. I‘ve flagged only within 30 pages fo future re-reading, of tactical importance, out of nearly 400 pages.
A man was offered a once in lifetime, once in 10000 million chance to work with a top coach in contemporary world. And he keep writing about analysis which outsiders could do. Waste of his life & time there. Shame.
The good pages are good, though limited.

Hugely insightful follow up book that further explores Pep and what drives him. It also has some interesting observations and predictions about how well Pep will do at Man City, even foreseeing the current slump in form that Man City are going through and Chelsea's rise under Conte.

Really good insight into how Pep operates. It would be a 5 star but I had to take a little break half way through to give my mind a rest. Pep is complex! Must read for any City fan and in fact I'd go as far to say that those who are pessimistic about Pep should definitely have a read
