Emergency. Crisis. Too many incoming wounded. Not enough surgeons to handle the influx. The Nelson Mandela, the Conglomerate's Premier Medical Space Station is swamped by the number of wounded, genetically-modified, combat space marines being delivered to the station from conflicts all over the USS. When the brilliant animal-adaptations surgeon, Dr. Hiro Al-Fadi, decides to create a surgeon android with artificial intelligence and free will, the Chief of Staff demands it be destroyed out of fear. How can Hiro save his compassionate and caring new creation, SAMM-E 777, from annihilation and prove he has discovered the answer to how to prevent the machines from destroying humankind?
I am a physician surgical assistant by day, evening, weekend, and holiday - which means I help the surgeons with their operations around the clock, whenever they need me - and a writer the rest of the time I am awake. I am cameraman, retractor holder, second pair of hands, and Girl Friday in the OR (another nice euphemism for slave ;D). I practised as a GP for over twenty years in a small rural town in Southern Ontario, Canada after doing stints in research in Ecology and Neurophysiology. When I am not trying to catch up on my sleep or getting dragged around the countryside by my wild and crazy Alaskan Malamute, I write science fiction, fantasy, and create fantastical collages, (which can be found on my website: http://www.sesasaki.com, if you are interested). Welcome to the Madhouse is the first in a series of science fiction books based on the trials and tribulations of a medical space station.
I read this after reading the first two. I love the humor and interactions between the characters. This story cleared up a few things I had wondered about, such as how the android got his preferred name and why he was different from normal androids. I honestly don't know if I would have enjoyed it as much without reading (at least) Welcome to the Madhouse. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
I give this one five stars, but only with the caveat that it would be best enjoyed after reading the first two books in the series. Having been following the series, I enjoyed this book. But I believe that I would have found it frustrating had I not read the other books first. I am already attached to the characters and familiar with the setting.
This is a shorter read, and explores the beginnings of the creation of the AI "Bud". If you enjoy the series, then this is a lovely glimpse into why Bud is like he is, and some of the other characters.
