The Scandians have had a good beating, realising that Catarina and the Albion fleet are more than a match for them. Of course, that all fell to the wayside and everybody decided to become friends and play on the same side when the Apex showed, because no one wants to become bird food.
And thus starts a very hesitant and distrustful alliance, with Albion, Hroom and Scandian, all disliking each other and ready to kill each other, but at the same time, agreeing to hold off on that, pending defeating the blood thirsty birds, the Apex, who have turned up ready to kill everyone in the area, regardless of their backgrounds.
This book goes into some interesting background of both the Hroom and the Scandian cultures, giving us even more depth and insight into the strange alien culture of the Hroom, and some understanding of the evolution of the Scandian Viking culture.
Wallace has created this incredible star map with hundreds of inhabited planets and then filled them with numerous different species, some of them alien, a lot different cultures of the Ancient Earth, but he has developed this amazing background for each of them, full of in-depth cultural references and details to allow us to fully immerse ourselves into his world. It is beautifully done, creative and allows the reader to really enjoy the story so much more than some other books in this genre.
As the threat of the Apex is truly realised by all sides, everyone decides that fighting amongst themselves is pointless as all that will be left are the scraps for the birds to feed on, whomever wins, and that they are better banding together to rid themselves of this threat.
As such, tenuous alliances (full of backstabbing and betrayal) are formed, and Catarina must watch every step, least she be given away as a prize by someone, possibly even her own people.
With brutal, epic space battles, and some amazing hand to hand combat using ‘Mech Suits’, this is a full on action story, and is a real improvement on the first book.
This series is a lot of fun, with brilliant dialogue (Capp is still one of my favourites), the return of Jess Tolvern in an upgraded “Blackbeard” gives the story a new bit of an edge as well, and the continued threat of the Apex is the thing of nightmares, and makes this a great read.

What I liked:
The author is really good at character creation and making them develop over several books. I also liked that the book is centered around space warfare and colonization in the future, but the setting could as easily have been in the early 1800’s. The author has a good feeling for details and there are many small components working together making the story feel complete.
What I didn’t like:
The Scandians. I just have a hard time imagining 1200th century brutes in space, having preserved all expected traits (including the myth about women not being welcome on ships). Why were they so stuck in history? At least they didn’t wear horned helmets.
(I still have an issue with Apex being high-tech birds. It’s alien enough, but birds?)
I also think that the story would have benefitted from more changes in the pacing. Sometimes it felt like I was reading on fast-forward.

Great and fun series
I absolutely enjoy every part of this series. The characters are fun and the battle scenes are well done. I also like the universe the author created.

All sci-fi aficionados will love this. Amazing aliens and superb spacecraft carry out breathtaking battles. Michael Wallace has another well written science fiction masterpiece.
