Michelle is getting used to her new life, one with clans, parents, a loving grandmother, and a boyfriend. But her old responsibilities are still around. The police still need her help, and balancing all her obligations is becoming more difficult, but police cases won’t wait for anyone, and when the police call, she has to answer.
It starts out like any other case. Suspicious magic has been reported, and the police need Michelle to help them check it out. When it turns out that the magic is deep in the Cohutta Wilderness Area, Michelle asks Elron to accompany her. It isn’t long before she’s learning just how much she doesn’t know about the woods.
When that small problem turns into a really big problem, spells are flying, danger is everywhere, and only one question remains. Will they escape alive?
Love the ending, however, I felt the whole maze problem just went on for too long. Additionally, the author is generally pretty good about explaining, in some way, why the characters don’t know what the reader knows but the medallion part wasn’t explained until much later. It’s also frustrating to recall something that was given to us earlier on and then Michelle not realize it until much later. She’s portrayed to be this super smart and capable witch but is slightly absent minded. I feel like just watching a program on Japanese items or reading about items holding energy and then coming across said things would naturally trigger the memory way sooner than what happens with Michelle in these books. This was my least favorite so far.
After the adventures of clan wars, Michelle is hoping for some quiet time, just removing wonky spells from household items and reading all the books that Ethel has recommended so that she can prepare to become the next witch premier. When she’s called out to investigate some strange magic in a forested area, she and Elron head out to help. After hiking for miles, they come across Ned, who stuns them all, takes the werebear, Gunder captive. Waking up separate, in different parts of a maze, they are told that if they can escape it, everyone will be freed. The maze is full of unusual magic that Michelle can’t figure out, the plants don’t respond to Elron and there is danger everywhere. While I didn’t like this book as much as the others, it went on too long in the maze, it was still a good read. There are several different viewpoints which make it interesting. There is suspense, great (and new) characters, some unusual situations, and surprises – especially the ending. If this had been the first book of the series I probably would have been slower to jump into the rest of the books but since it was mid series, I’m still enjoying the series. Onto the next one.
Actual star score is 4.25. Michelle and Elron are getting closer since her parents wedding, but are taking it slowly. He's working on teaching her more about nature, so when she gets a call to help the police check out some unusual magic up in the mountains nature reserve she invites him to come help her. She packs a small pack to take, but Elron tells her it's not enough and makes up packs for both of them. Michelle is a bit upset about the weight and how much useless things he packs but doesn't want to argue, so she packs into both of their now backpacks the items she had and off they go to meet up with the police teams. Once on the mountain, they start running into some unusual things, such as very large rhododendrons. They can feel the strange magics, but neither Michelle, Elron or the hedge practitioners can read it. Then when finding a opening in the wall of rhododendrons and going through it they find themselves lost in a maze that's working hard to separate them from each other. If there was a bit less of the maze, I would have given the book 5 stars.

Wow! The scope of this author's talented imagination is huge. This book had me from start to finish, it was hard to see how this would span out, the story was so complex I found it hard to guess what would happen. Not that I spent much time guessing, I was too engrossed in the book. So much was happening it was impossible to predict the end, or how it would be possible. I did rather like the actual finish though, it was just right. Now I have only one book left. It's gonna be a good one I can tell. Hopefully I won't be too sad when the finish comes, I am so enjoying these books. Remember, you must start at book 1 then work your way through to get the full feel of the ongoing storyline, because it is ongoing and progressive too. I need to look into more of this author's writings I think Sue P
This is an entertaining paranormal urban fantasy series. Great cast of characters and an entertaining storyline. Michelle once again as an odd case she’s looking into. A lot of new magically tainted artifacts are popping up all over the area. Her boyfriend Elon has even had an odd new magical plant show up at the university. Now some hikers have reported an odd disturbance in the nearby mountains. So three police officers and Michelle and Elon are going up the mountain to investigate. Read on and see what ventured weights them. Will they find out the cause of the troubles? Is it something else entirely? Read on to find out.
Two hikers report a strange happening, they found what they thought was shards of pottery and a strong urge to leave. Michelle and Elron are asked to help investigate. They find magic, but not like Michelle's magic. A human has found a way to make a powder that allows them to use magic. Michelle has to find a way to destroy all the powder and catch the human who has been making it. And find the demon who contracted the human to create the magic powder.
Amazing Series. I thoroughly enjoy reading this series. So much so I put aside all the other books I have yet to read so that I could get enjoy this amazing series. Please keep up the good work. I will certainly be looking for more of your series.
And it was already great from the very beginning. I’m looking forward to reading more about how Michelle tames her immense powers, and how that improves the life of those around her
I love this book (and the whole series thus far!) I love the writing style and the pace, youre always right there with the characters but never get bored by trivial and over wordy details. The story is magical and I am downloading the next one as I type!
I found the series by accident but have enjoyed it so much that I have had to buy and read all of this series. I love the direction of the books, all read within a week and have number six left to begin today. I can recommend the authors books.
I'm so happy that I got the first book in this series. Each one builds more in-depth characters and exciting activity for the main characters. It's a true roller coaster of action in each book.
Between demons and seriously messed up bad guys this series has taken a darker turn but our heroine stay true to her nature and remains a good witch. Elron is steadfastly by her side as they face all dangers together.
Things have become exciting for Michelle and Elron. The ending was sweet but no spoilers.. The maze and mind magic that Ned used but questions remain . who were th witches buying the powder, and what of the demon? On to the next book for answers!
It was a great read. I read all the books in this set pretty quickly. It had funny parts and danger and even budding romance. Most of all it had magic it was awesome
The ending of this book was so wrong to me. It was way to fast and it left me feeling that the author was done with this book and already focused on the next book in this series.
