A boy who dreama wbat it would be like to have a dinosaur. My kids were kind of ambivalent to it, they love dinosaurs, but the illustrationa were at the same time under and overwhelming, the story sort of boring and the moral of the story was very predictable.
A hilarious and entertaining children's picture book about a boy who thought he wanted a dinosaur for a pet, but then realized he may be in over his head trying to take care of a wild creature such as a dinosaur. With imaginative and hilarious illustrations as well, the story just comes to life and illustrates why we don't have wild animals for pets (but dinosaurs give this story a fun twist). Any boy who has ever wanted a dinosaur for a pet (probably every boy including myself) would love this book. Five out of five stars.
Fun, whimsical story with beautifully detailed illustrations. This was my husband's when he was little. It's now being enjoyed by our own little dinosaur lover.
I'd give this book a 3 if I were rating it for me, but Charlotte gives it a 1. This book is a little fantasy, which Charlotte finds unacceptable in her dinosaur books. The dinosaurs are also a little wild and scary, which, despite Charlotte's preference for realism, is a little too scary. Dinosaur on dinosaur violence? Sad, but acceptable. Dinosaur on people violence? Reason never to crack the book again.
On a more technical note, I loved the illustrations, and the world that was set up, but I found it a little confusing. In kids' books there is usually a clear indicator whether this is a goofy alternative world or a dream sequence when there are people living alongside dinosaurs. That was never made really clear...it was more like a kid dreamed of owning a dinosaur in a world where that was possible, but then decided it wasn't the right pet for him...but that it was still a real option. Can't describe it better than that, but the ambiguity was just a little off to me. Perhaps more of a problem with me than with this book.
Didn't really like this book. The story line was not that interesting and the pictures weren't that great either. The pictures seemed very blocky and flat, something that I don't think children would be very drawn to. I didn't like the storyline because it seemed like a typical story about a boy dreaming about something ridiculous and then waking up and realizing that having a pet dinosaur probably wouldn't be such a good idea. This book was published in 1991 thought, so maybe that kind of story line was new back during those times.
The fact that the author called the dinosaur store a "dino-store" was cute though. I did like that and how the book showed that dinosaurs are really different from humans and do not eat, sleep, and do the same things that humans do. So I guess this could be a introduction to children about dinosaurs and having pets in general. In general though, I just thought it was boring and could use more entertaining and enjoyable qualities.
Entretenido libro. No tan bien pensado como las obras que Kitamura escribe e ilustra, pero su trabajo ayuda a resaltarlo. A mis hijos les gustó por tratarse de dinosaurios, pero no es de sus favoritos.

A charming little book about a boy who wants a pet dinosaur. Imaginative, well drawn and a well crafted ending that brings the book back to reality. A good book for children.
