This crime novel doesn’t really stand out due to its language, although the author often uses very funny phrases and comparisons, which I liked, as well as the detailed, profuse food descriptions (the author seems to be a connoisseur).
On the other hand, the book shocked me several times by describing extremely cruel scenes vividly all of a sudden. And then there are some things I saw coming from a mile away …
In short, it’s quite an interesting thriller with quite an interesting (kick-boxing!) female investigator. A good average.

Fatal Crossing is the first book in the Nora Sand series by Danish journalist and author, Lone Theils. Nora Sand works in London as a correspondent for a Danish weekly magazine, Globalt. She’s headed for Wolf Hall prison, having been granted, much to her surprise, an interview with serial killer, William Hickley, aka Bill Hix.
Days earlier, she had accidentally come across, in a second-hand leather suitcase she’d bought on a whim, some Polaroid photos of young women in similar poses. The photo of two girls on a Danish Ferry rang faint bells, and research proved it was a hitherto unknown photo of the very last time that teenagers Lisbeth Morgensen and Lulu Brandt had been seen before their disappearance in 1985. Nora’s editor agrees there might be a story in it, so she gets the go ahead to investigate.
Back in Copenhagen, Nora calls in favours to learn just what happened on the fateful ferry trip to London, tracking down others in the group. When the Scotland Yard eventually get involved in the case, it turns out that, even though there are connections to Bill Hix, some of the girls in the Polaroids disappeared after he was jailed. Could he have had an accomplice, or is it the work of a copy-cat?
As Nora flits between Copenhagen and London, following up leads, interviewing witnesses and unearthing clues, an added complication appears in the form of Andreas, a Danish cop in London for a course on terror cells, a man she hasn’t seen since she firmly rejected his declaration of love at the end of high school. Andreas looked good then, and he’s looking mighty fine now: did she make a mistake back then? Trouble is, he has a girlfriend…
Theils gives the reader a great plot with a few twists, plenty of tension and a nail-biting climax. There are some truly nasty villains, a few dedicated cops, several supportive friends and a really gutsy heroine (even if some of the decisions she makes in the heat of the moment may not be the wisest ones). The banter between the characters is witty and clever, and some of the humour is quite black.
This page-turner, flawlessly translated from Danish by Charlotte Berslund, is a brilliant debut novel that will have English-speaking readers hoping that the sequel, The Blue Poet’s Wife, is translated and published soon. Scandi crime with a difference.

Cold Cases är något jag alltid finner spännande att läsa och jag tyckte om idén om att en journalist som finner ett foto på två flickor som försvann på en färja till England 1985. Nora Sand börjar undersöka saken och det dröjer inte länge fören hon finner att spåren leder till en seriemördare som sitter inspärrad på Wolf Hall. Kan det vara så att han ligger bakom flickornas försvinnande?
Flickorna på Englandsbåten var en intressant deckare, jag kom att tycka om Nora Sands, en rutinerad journalist som av en händelse snubblar över ett foto som kommer att påverka hennes liv rejält. Jag har alltid gillar läsa böcker där en person börjar nysta i ett försvinnande flera år innan och denna bok var inget undantag. Dock så fann jag att även om boken var intressant att läsa så var det inte direkt spännande. Det kändes som om den saknade något för att verkligen fånga mitt intresse.
Och jag tror att en orsak till att jag hade lite svårt med boken var Noras "relationsproblem" med hennes ungdomsvän Andreas. Deras "dans" genom boken störde mig, och jag mentalt rullade ögonen varenda gång Nora trånande tänkte på Andreas, eller som när han råkade se henne komma hem med en killkompis som hade druckit lite för mycket och blev svartsjuk och gick. Scenen när de var tvungen att dela säng pga av att en katt fick kattungar i hennes säng blev nästan för mycket för mig. Jag har absolut inget emot lite romantik i deckare. Men just ner det gällde Andreas och Nora så funkade det inte alls för mig.
När det gäller fallet, så även om jag kanske inte föll totalt för boken så räknade jag inte ut slutet förrän Nora låg riktigt risigt till och själv började inse att något var fel med en viss person. Jag hade inte alls förväntat mig det slutet måste jag erkänna.
Jag tyckte om poliserna på Scotland Yard och jag hoppas att uppföljande böcker kommer inkludera Nora involvera med dem i fler fall!

Journalist Nora Sand working in London for the Danish newspaper Global begins to unravel the story. She travels to Denmark to examine the girls' variegated background on a juvenile institution. Soon she is drawn into a case with a gruesome serial killer who is serving a life sentence at the notorious prison, Wolf Hall. At the same time, her boyfriend from when she was young shows up unexpectedly in London as Nora delves so deeply into the old case that she will have reason to fear for his life.

Cold Case's is something I always find interesting to read, and I liked the idea of a journalist finding a photo of two girls who disappeared on a ferry to England in 1985. Nora Sand begins to investigate the matter and it will not be long before she finds that the tracks lead to a serial killer who is incarcerated at Wolf Hall. Could it be that he is behind the disappearance of the two danish girls?
"The girls on the England" boat was an interesting detective story, I came to like Nora Sands, an experienced journalist who accidentally stumble across a photo that will affect her life considerably. I always like to read books in which a person begins to unravel the disappearance of several years before and this book was no exception. However, I found that although the book interesting was it not exactly exciting to read. I felt like it was missing something to really catch my interest.
And I think one reason that I had a little difficulty with the book was Nora's "relationship" with her childhood friend Andreas. Their "dance" through the book bore me, and I mentally rolled my eyes every time Nora wistfully thought about Andreas, or when he happened to see her come home with a male friend who had drunk a little too much and became jealous and went away angry. The scene where they had to share a bed because a cat had given birth to kittens in her bed was almost too much for me. I have absolutely nothing against a little romance in the novel. But, Andreas and Nora just didn't work out for me.
About the case, although I may not have totally fallen for the book did I not realize how it all fitted together before Nora was really in trouble and she herself started to realize that something was wrong with a particular person. I was not expecting that kind of ending, I must admit.
I liked the police at Scotland Yard, and I hope that the follow-up books will include Nora involved with them in more cases!

Me quedé esperando lo trepidante que describe la sinopsis. Al comienzo engancha, luego la trama se vuelve lenta y aburrida y no es hasta las últimas 40 páginas que de verdad se torna emocionante.

Nora recalled the many times she had found herself in a tight spot. How she had been in the middle of a war zone and her satellite phone had cut out three minutes before the deadline. How once she had been caught behind a roadblock between Macedonia and Kosovo with three mercenaries, who were trigger-happy and high on cocaine. How her laptop had once deleted five hours of work on an express train to Manchester, and how she had recreated the article in twenty-five minutes, because that was all the time she had. Nora Sand solves problems. And she does it cool, calm and collected. Afterwards she might have a total meltdown. That is, if she has any energy left.
Danish journalist Nora Sand, London-based correspondent for the Danish weekly newspaper Globalt is returning from interviewing a schoolmaster involved in the Rwandan massacre when she and Australian photographer, Pete, stop off along the south coast at the town of Brine. Nora gravitates towards a second-hand shop, attracted by a leather suitcase in the window. After a bit of haggling, the case is hers, locked and without a key. Teasing the lock she finds a series of photos of young women, posing for glamour shots, and one that grabs her attention – years earlier a group of teenagers from the Vestergården care home were on the ferry between Denmark and Harwich, when two girls in the party disappeared. The photographer might have been the last person to see them alive.
Nora checks out the court case of negligence against the home care manager, and with her editor’s approval, she returns to Denmark to track down the one-time manager and any surviving teenagers on the fatal crossing.
She needed a better understanding of the girls. Discover where Lulu and Lisbeth had come from. Right now they were simply abstract stereotypes. What were their dreams? Why had they ended up at Vestergården, a place where damaged and difficult youngsters were sent when all other efforts had failed? When they were what social workers liked to call ‘beyond educational reach’.
The suitcase itself reveals a chilling clue: the name etched in it that of Bill Hix – a serial killer of young women serving a life sentence, who gave no indication of where his victims were buried to allow closure for the families. And difficulties with the timeframe, in that some victims disappeared after Hix was incarcerated. Was there a copycat killer? With the police watching closely, Nora gets to interview Hix in prison.
At first I thought this was a ‘silence of the lambs’ type thriller, but the twists came thick and fast. Nora’s search widens when she learns that another teenager from the care home, a promising young boxer, disappeared on a boxing tour at Manchester. Was there a connection? As a one-time war correspondent Nora is no pushover, and an accomplished kick-boxer – skills she will need as she gets closer to the truth. Love interest too, in Danish detective Andreas – but will the job get in the way?
Verdict: a satisfying read, well-recommended.

A perfect mystery!
My View:
What a great debut! This is a very credible and immensely satisfying read that had moments that remind me of actual crime that have occurred in Australia, specifically in Perth WA. I won’t share the details as I don’t want to influence your reading or give away any spoilers but after you have read it, tell me if anything in this novel resonated with crimes in your region.
Back to the review – I loved the protagonist, Nora, strong female leads are always a favourite in my reading; she is intelligent, passionate about her work, her life is extraordinary – we meet Nora who is a journalist, as she is conducting an interview with a war criminal: “The stories swirled around Nora’s head, one atrocity overtaking the next. Schoolchildren witnessing the gang rape of their teacher before they themselves were hacked to death with machetes. Massacres of villagers that went on until the murderers were too tired to life their arms and so they locked up the survivors with the corpses until the next day when the killing resumed…” (p1) A brutal “hook” reminiscent of current news headlines that will have you squirming in your seat as you read, the honesty, brutality and inhumanity of the deeds pricking at your conscience.
I think we will be seeing more of this type of occupation and reporting of current events in our future fiction reads, what a brilliant way to add social commentary to our reading lives.
A strong, determined, feisty female protagonist, the crimes credible, heinous, prevalent and feature in our news headlines far too often and a fabulous twist or two that will surprise the most hardened crime fiction reader. This is a fabulous read and I cannot wait for the next book in this series to arrive in my letterbox.

Όλα ξεκινούν όταν η Νόρα Σαν, ανταπο��ρίτρια ενός δανέζικου περιοδικού στο Λονδίνο, αγοράζει μια παλιά βαλίτσα από ένα μικρό παλαιοπωλείο. Μέσα στη βαλίτσα βρίσκονται κάποιες παλιές φωτογραφίες – μεταξύ αυτών, και η φωτογραφία δύο κοριτσιών που εξαφανίστηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια ενός ταξιδιού από τη Δανία προς την Αγγλία το 1985 και των οποίων η τύχη αγνοείται έκτοτε. Η δίψα της για την ανακάλυψη της αλήθειας θα την οδηγήσει σε ταξίδια-αστραπή από το Λονδίνο στην Κοπεγχάγη και πάλι πίσω, σε συναντήσεις με παλιούς γνωστούς των κοριτσιών από την εποχή εκείνη, «ανασκαφές» στο παρελθόν, αλλά και σε έναν επικίνδυνο ισοβίτη κρατούμενο, που εκτίει ποινή φυλάκισης για δολοφονίες πολλών κοριτσιών και στον οποίο η Νόρα νομίζει πως ανήκε η βαλίτσα που αγόρασε εκείνη.
Ταυτόχρονα, το δικό της παρελθόν τής χτυπάει την πόρτα κι εκείνη καλείται να το αντιμετωπίσει. Η εμφάνιση του Αντρέας, ενός παλιού της φίλου το ερωτικό ενδιαφέρον του οποίου είχε απορρίψει κάποτε, έρχεται να ταράξει τη ζωή της σε μια ιδιαίτερα φορτωμένη περίοδο. Γιατί ανακαλύπτει πως τρέφει αισθήματα για εκείνον και φοβάται πως πλέον είναι αργά, μιας και έχει φιλενάδα. Αυτός, ως αστυνομικός, θα προσπαθήσει να τη βοηθήσει στην έρευνά της· όμως τα πράγματα γίνονται ολοένα πιο επικίνδυνα. Γιατί εκείνοι που ευθύνονται για την εξαφάνιση των δύο κοριτσιών οπωσδήποτε δεν βλέπουν με καλό μάτι τις έρευνες της Νόρας και δεν θα διστάσουν να φτάσουν μέχρι τα άκρα, προκειμένου να μην αποκαλυφθούν…
Η πλοκή του βιβλίου βασίζεται εν μέρει σε αληθινή ιστορία, την οποία η συγγραφέας διάβασε σε μια εφημερίδα. Αυτή αφορούσε έναν Αμερικανό δολοφόνο κατά συρροή και ορισμένες φωτογραφίες αγοριών και κοριτσιών που βρέθηκαν στην κατοχή του. Πολλά από τα άτομα αυτά δεν βρέθηκαν ποτέ, ενώ άλλα αρνήθηκαν να μιλήσουν για το θέμα. Από αυτό το γεγονός, λοιπόν, εμπνεύστηκε η Theils τη δική της ιστορία, και κατάφερε να δημιουργήσει μια πλοκή ξεχωριστή, που κόβει την ανάσα με τους γρήγορους και καταιγιστικούς ρυθμούς της.
Το μυθιστόρημα είναι ένα κράμα βρετανικής και σκανδιναβικής λογοτεχνίας, μπολιασμένο με όλα τα απαιτούμενα στοιχεία έτσι ώστε να αποτελεί ένα πρώτης τάξης αστυνομικό θρίλερ: αγωνία, ανατροπές, έρευνα εις βάθος, εμπόδια, κρυμμένα μυστικά του παρελθόντος, μυστήριο, ανθρώπους που κρύβουν πράγματα που δεν θέλουν -ή δεν πρέπει- να έρθουν στο φως. Κι εκτός από αυτά, από τις σελίδες του δεν λείπουν το χιούμορ και το φλερτ – οι σκηνές της Νόρα και του Αντρέας είναι η ανάσες που χρειάζεται τόσο η ηρωίδα, όσο κι ο αναγνώστης ανάμεσα στις ανατροπές που φέρνει κάθε καινούριο στοιχείο που έρχεται στο φως και αφορά την παράξενη αυτή υπόθεση, και οπωσδήποτε έχουν το δικό τους ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον.
Οι χαρακτήρες είναι καλοδουλεμένοι και εκπληρώνουν στο ακέραιο τον ρόλο που τους έχει ανατεθεί, όμως απ’ όλους ξεχωρίζει αναμφίβολα η Νόρα. Μια γυναίκα σύγχρονη, που παλεύει για την καριέρα της σε ένα ανδροκρατούμενο επάγγελμα, αγωνίζεται για όσα παθιάζεται και ρίχνεται στη συγκεκριμένη υπόθεση με το όλο της το είναι. Δυναμική κι επίμονη, χωρίς όμως να γίνεται εκνευριστική, πεισματάρα και ευέξαπτη, περίεργη και αποφασιστική, παρορμητική και συναισθηματική, είναι μια ηρωίδα που γίνεται συμπαθής παρά τα ελαττώματά της -αυτά την κάνουν ανθρώπινη, άλλωστε- και κερδίζει τον αναγνώστη με την ειλικρινή, χειμαρρώδη προσωπικότητά της. Επιπλέον, θα μπορούσε άνετα να θεωρηθεί το alter ego της συγγραφέως, στο επαγγελματικό κομμάτι τουλάχιστον. Έχοντας εργαστεί και η ίδια ως ανταποκρίτρια εφημερίδας, η Theils προικίζει την ηρωίδα της με το δημοσιογραφικό δαιμόνιο και τον τρόπο ανάπτυξης της έρευνας που πιθανότατα βοήθησε και την ίδια στην καριέρα της.
Παρόλο που η αφήγηση είναι κυρίως εστιασμένη στο παρόν και την έρευνα της Νόρας για τη συγκεκριμένη υπόθεση, δεν λείπουν και οι συχνές αναδρομές στη νοσταλγική για πολλούς δεκαετία του ’80, που δίνουν έναν διαφορετικό τόνο στην εξέλιξη της δράσης. Χωρίς βέβαια να σημαίνει πως αυτή ατονεί. Αντίθετα, συνεχώς κλιμακώνεται, από κεφάλαιο σε κεφάλαιο, καθώς ολοένα και περισσότερα στοιχεία έρχονται στο φως και προκαλούν εκπλήξεις, αλλά και νέα ερωτήματα.
Το θέμα που διαπραγματεύεται το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο είναι συγκεκριμένο, όμως οι κοινωνικές του προεκτάσεις πάνε πολύ πιο μακριά από την εξαφάνιση των κοριτσιών. Η πένα της συγγραφέως στηλιτεύει και το θέμα των ανθρώπων που ζουν στο κοινωνικό περιθώριο, άτομα για τα οποία κανείς δεν νοιάζεται, ούτε ακόμα όταν αυτά εξαφανιστούν. Τα κορίτσια που εξαφανίστηκαν, αλλά και οι σύντροφοί τους στα διάφορα κοινωνικά ιδρύματα, έχουν να πουν μια διαφορετική ιστορία κι η Theils τούς ανοίγει ένα μικρό παραθυράκι στις σελίδες του βιβλίου της.
Αν η αρχή είναι το ήμισυ του παντός, μπορούμε να περιμένουμε πάρα πολλά από τη Lone Theils στο μέλλον. Το «Θανάσιμο πέρασμα» αποτελεί ένα πραγματικά συναρπαστικό, εκρηκτικό, αξιοπρεπέστατο ντεμπούτο, μια ιστορία που καθηλώνει και κρατάει αμείωτο το ενδιαφέρον του αναγνώστη μέχρι την τελευταία σελίδα.
Όλα ξεκινούν όταν η Νόρα Σαν, ανταπο��ρίτρια ενός δανέζικου περιοδικού στο Λονδίνο, αγοράζει μια παλιά βαλίτσα από ένα μικρό παλαιοπωλείο. Μέσα στη βαλίτσα βρίσκονται κάποιες παλιές φωτογραφίες – μεταξύ αυτών, και η φωτογραφία δύο κοριτσιών που εξαφανίστηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια ενός ταξιδιού από τη Δανία προς την Αγγλία το 1985 και των οποίων η τύχη αγνοείται έκτοτε. Το επαγγελματικό της ένστικτο δεν θα αργήσει να ξυπνήσει και η Νόρα αποφασίζει να σκαλίσει λίγο την παλιά εκείνη υπόθεση, χωρίς να φαντάζεται τι επιπτώσεις θα έχει αυτό στη ζωή της.
Η νεαρή δημοσιογράφος ξεκινάει την έρευνά της με όσα στοιχεία διαθέτει, προσδοκώντας να βρει την απάντηση στον γρίφο της εξαφάνισης των δύο κοριτσιών. Ανοίγοντας τη, ανακαλύπτει κάτι πραγματικά παράξενο. Εντός της βαλίτσας υπάρχουν κάποιες φωτογραφίες πολαρόιντ. Μεταξύ αυτών η δημοσιογράφος διακρίνει τη φωτογραφία δύο κοριτσιών από τη Δανία που εξαφανίστηκαν ενώ ταξίδευαν σε ένα φέρι-μποτ στην Αγγλία το 1985.
Το δημοσιογραφικό ένστικτο βρίσκεται σε εγρήγορση, με αποτέλεσμα να βρεθεί άμεσα εν μέσω επαγγελματικής έρευνας. Σύντομα ξεκινά ταξίδια μεταξύ των δύο εμπλεκόμενων χωρών, Αγγλίας και Δανίας και βρίσκεται σε επαφή με μάρτυρες. Η μεθοδική της έρευνα την οδηγεί σε φυλακές υψίστης ασφαλείας, σε έναν συγκεκριμένο κατά συρροή δολοφόνο. Η αναζήτηση των δύο εξαφανισμένων κοριτσιών της φωτογραφίας αναδεικνύεται σε μια πραγματικά επικίνδυνη και δύσκολη περίπτωση.

Livro no qual a personagem principal é Nora Sand, jornalista dinamarquesa destacada em Londres que adquire uma mala antiga na qual constam fotografias de raparigas, entre as quais 2 que desapareceram sem como nem porque e ate a data nada se sabe sobre elas, estarão ainda vivas ou não?
Partindo deste pressuposto decide a investigar o seu desaparecimento, dando de caras com a pista de um serial killer.
Tudo isto numa fase inicial do livro o que me levou a pensar:então mas já se sabe quem é o autor deste desaparecimento?Bom e aqui é óbvio que não vou dizer se é ou não.
O livro torna-se bastante interessante com o decurso da investigação onde leva a personagem principal a diversos locais com muitas outras personagens pelo meio.
Capítulos com mais suspense que outros, com especial destaque para a parte final, mas que faz fluir a leitura de forma bastante agradável.
Confesso que o livro para estreia não esta nada mau.

Völlig unglaubwürdige Fallauflösung mit einer Reihe von hohlen Weisheiten über das Leben und die Angst. Ich wurde das Gefühl nicht los, dass der unwahrscheinlichste aller Ausgänge gewählt, um den größten Aha-Effekt beim Leser zu erzielen. Unter psychologischen Gesichtspunkten ist die Geschichte völliger Humbug in meinen Augen.

Ενώ στην αρχή είχα ενδοιασμούς ότι θα διάβαζα ένα σύνηθες αστυνομικό βιβλίο που ίσως κατέληγε βαρετό, στην πορεία ενθουσιάστηκα!
Η συγγραφέας καταφέρνει, με επιτυχία, να περιγράψει όχι απλά την εξαφάνιση ενός ατόμου αλλά και ολόκληρο τον κόσμο που αφήνει πίσω του και τον αντίκτυπο στα άτομα που έως τότε υπήρχαν στη ζωή του.
Έντονη δράση, έξυπνη πλοκή και αρκετές στιγμές που θα πεις «awwww» λόγω του ρομαντικού ειδυλλίου που εξελίσσεται!

"Το θανάσιμο πέρασμα" της Lone Theils, η οποία μια μακρά δημοσιογραφική υπηρεσία στο βιογραφικό της, αφού έχει εργαστεί για 16 συναπτά έτη ως ανταποκρίτρια στο Λονδίνο για λογαριασμό των δανέζικων εφημερίδων Berlingske Tidende και Politiken, κυκλοφορεί από τις εκδόσεις Μεταίχμιο, ως μια εναλλακτική, θα λέγαμε, πρόταση στην κατηγορία των αστυνομικών θρίλερ. Tämä esikoisdekkari on kiinnostanut kovasti varsinkin päähenkilönsä toimittaja Nora Sandin vuoksi, joka on sopivan näppärä ja nenäkäs, itsenäinen ja tehokas tutkijaluonne, ja jota ei juuri pelota mennä epämääräisiinkään paikkoihin. Um thriller que cumpre a sua função: entretém o leitor.
Apesar de no início achar a escrita da autora algo fria (a fazer lembrar outros autores nórdicos, diria...) esta melhora com o tempo. O facto de a autora ter acrescentado uns laivos de um potencial romance à história ajudou.
Relativamente à investigação da nossa protagonista, apesar de ter havido algumas coincidências um pouco forçadas, o mistério tem pernas para andar e mantém-nos interessados do início ao fim.
As últimas 100 páginas são de um elevada intensidade e mantêm-nos presos à história devorando capítulo atrás de capítulo a fim de desvendar todo o mistério.

I received a copy of Fatal Crossing from Bonnier Publishing Australia to review.
Fatal Crossing has been translated from Danish. I don’t think I’ve read a lot of books that have been translated into English. I can only think of one off the top of my head. I found it hard to get into this at the start because there were some things that I didn’t think needed to be part of the story and I did end up skipping all the parts with what people were eating.
I thought the flashbacks into Nora’s past were unnecessary, especially the parts about what happened with a guy, but after seeing on Goodreads that this is the first book in a series (well, there’s a sequel out but it’s in Danish so I can’t read it) it makes sense why it was part of the story. Even though I was more interested in the photo and the missing girls.
When I was drawn into the story and the mystery around the photo, I really enjoyed the book. It may have had a slow start for me but the second half of the book had more action, especially at the end!
Speaking of the photo and what happened to the two girls in it. Wow. I was not expecting that at all. I don’t want to say anything here about what happened because I hate spoiling books for other people. But I love books where I don’t see the ending coming.
Even though Fatal Crossing took me a while to get into I did end up enjoying it and I’ll be keeping an eye out for the next book. I’m hoping it will be translated into English one day.
If you like mystery books with very surprising endings then I recommend finding a copy of Fatal Crossing.

Eu adorei tudo neste livro. Criei logo uma ligação com as personagens e com o tema. O tema foi original, o desaparecimento de duas raparigas num barco anos atrás e a procura exaustiva de Nora pela verdade do que aconteceu naquele dia. Mas nem sempre a verdade é o que estamos à espera. Este livro envolve tanto mistério como um pouco de romance. Envolve assassinos em série, mulheres perturbadas, vidas opostas, famílias destruídas, raparigas desaparecidas e um final que não estamos à espera.

Nora is a strong female protagonist with plenty of great qualities and has a lot in common with the author. But the romance thread irritated me and I rolled my eyes every time Nora tried to clear her head of Andreas. The continual references to her dirty washing riled me up until I wanted to reach into the book and do her damn laundry for her. On the flip side, the relationship Nora has with her boss (and her nickname for him) was amusing and very 'real world' and her working relationship with Pete was warm and genuine.
Fatal Crossing has been translated from Danish, and while the translation was smooth enough, I did bristle at the overuse of the word chubby to describe several female characters in the book.
Fatal Crossing is already a bestseller and will be popular amongst readers who enjoy Brit crime and Scandinavian and Nordic noir.

Trigger warnings: murder, rape (in the past), gore, graphic descriptions of disfigurement.
Of the six translated books I borrowed from the library recently, this is the one I was probably most hesitant about. And yet it was one of the ones I enjoyed the most. The mystery was solid, the characters were compelling, and I enjoyed the way the story jumped between the UK and Denmark.
There were some hella detailed descriptions of gore and disfigurement that I could happily have done without, but on the whole, this was a pleasant (if slightly gory) surprise.

A solid 3.5 stars rounded up. I'd originally put this on my to-read list when going through different Scandinavian authors and it turned out to be excellent read when you need something easy.
There are two Danish girls who went missing in the 80s, a stack of old photos and a connection to a notorious serial killer. And one reporter who ends up digging a bit too deep. It all ties in quite nicely and the ending is not too predictable.
Nora, the main character, is a nice change from those police officers who have more problems with their personal lives in the span of one book than the average person will ever have in their entire lives. It's also cool to have thrillers were the main character isn't working for the police but is a journalist, even if it means she'll completely disregard everything the police say. Liked that she had a fairly normal relationship with her family and while I wasn't too into the relationship drama, it didn't play too big a role.
The actual crime is interesting and unfolds nicely. The final twist is a bit sudden and you can't really spot the big reveal the way Nora does (or maybe it was a translation issue - either way it was at least explained). Also a bit too much violence towards the end, but luckily nothing too graphic. Mostly this is about horrible people and abuse of power. A good read when you need to switch off your brain a bit, and I'm going to read the next books in the series as well.

This is the first book from the Nora Sand series. A great introduction to a new series. In addition to the fact that you get to know many protagonists, which will certainly also appear in the later books, it is a captivating thriller from the first to the last page.
Nora Sand is a Danish journalist living in London writing articles for a Danish weekly paper. In an antique shop, she buys an old suitcase containing photos related to an old case in Denmark, where more than twenty years ago, two young girls from a youth home disappeared without a trace on their way to England. Sand travels to Copenhagen and tries to find a trail. She encounters many inconsistencies. She can convince her editor that behind these photos is certainly an exciting story for their newspaper.
Back in England, she meets her old Danish love, who is currently training at Scotland Yard. Not only her love life gets out of control. Soon she has to fear for her own life, because she realizes that she is a serial killer on the trail. Luckily there are a few guardian angels watching over them.

Nora Sand is a Danish journalist living in London writing articles for a Danish weekly paper. In an antique shop, she buys an old suitcase containing photos related to an old case in Denmark, where more than twenty years ago, two young girls from a youth home disappeared without a trace on their way to England. Sand travels to Copenhagen and tries to find a trail. She encounters many inconsistencies. She can convince her editor that behind these photos is certainly an exciting story for their newspaper.
Back in England, she meets her old Danish love, who is currently training at Scotland Yard. Not only her love life gets out of control. Soon she has to fear for her own life, because she realizes that she is a serial killer on the trail. Luckily there are a few guardian angels watching over them.

June 10, 2019«Το θανάσιμο πέρασμα» της Lone Theils ήθελα να το διαβάσω από τον περσινό Φεβρουάριο, που κυκλοφόρησε στα ελληνικά, και τελικά ήρθε στα χέρια μου μερικές μέρες πριν οπότε και ξεκίνησα να το διαβάζω με κάπως αργούς ρυθμούς λόγω διάφορων υποχρεώσεων που είχα. Σήμερα μου είχαν μείνει ελάχιστες σελίδες πριν το τέλος και κάπου ανάμεσα σε ένα διάλειμμα από τις δουλειές κατάφερα να το τελειώσω. Διαπιστώνοντας τελικά ότι αυτές οι τελευταίες σελίδες του ήταν και οι πιο κρίσιμες του βιβλίου. Γιατί η Theils δίνει την καθαρτική λύση του μυστηρίου κυριολεκτικά την τελευταία στιγμή δικαιώνοντας σου όλη αυτή την στάση αναμονής που σε είχε κατά τη διάρκεια της ανάγνωσης της ιστορίας της. Μιας ιστορίας που βασίζεται σε αληθινά γεγονότα που διανθίζεται όμως μέσα από τη μυθοπλασία της συγγραφέως μετατρέποντας το σε ένα άκρως ατμοσφαιρικό αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα.
Η δημοσιογράφος Νόρα Σαν, ανταποκρίτρια του δανέζικου περιοδικού Globalt στο Λονδίνο, αγοράζει μια βαλίτσα από ένα παλαιοπωλείο όπου θα ανακαλύψει στο εσωτερικό της διάφορες φωτογραφίες κοριτσιών. Ανάμεσα σε αυτές υπάρχει και μια που απεικονίζει δύο κοπέλες από τη Δανία οι οποίες είχαν εξαφανιστεί το 1985 όταν ταξίδευαν με φεριμπότ προς την Αγγλία. Λόγω επαγγέλματος θα ξυπνήσει μέσα της η δημοσιογραφική περιέργεια και θα αρχίσει να σκαλίζει την ιστορία των δύο κοριτσιών με τις έρευνες της να την οδηγούν σε αλεπάλληλα ταξίδια ανάμεσα στην Κοπεγχάγη και στο Λονδίνο, σε αμέτρητες συνεντεύξεις με μάρτυρες αλλά και σε συναντήσεις με άτομα από το παρελθόν της που θα την οδηγήσουν τελικά σε έναν serial killer που εκτίει ισόβια κάθειρξη στο Γουλφ Χολ, μια πασίγνωστη βρετανική φυλακή. Η αναζήτηση της αλήθειας για την εξαφάνιση των δύο κοριτσιών και για το τι ακριβώς τους συνέβη θα αποδειχθεί τρομακτικά επικίνδυνη όσο θα πλησιάζει προς αυτήν…
«Το θανάσιμο πέρασμα» είναι ένα μείγμα βρετανικού αστυνομικού και σκανδιναβικού νουάρ. Η Lone Theils, όπως και η ηρωίδα της, εργάστηκε ως ανταποκρίτρια δανέζικων εφημερίδων στον Λονδίνο για περίπου 16 χρόνια οπότε είναι λογικό να γνωρίζει αρκετά καλά τις συνήθειες των Άγγλων αλλά και το πως να κινείται στη χώρα. Και αυτό διαφαίνεται μέσα από την αφήγηση της ιστορίας της καθώς διαβάζουμε το βιβλίο της. Τα ταξίδια αστραπή της Νόρα Σαν μεταξύ Δανίας και Αγγλίας δίνουν τη δυνατότητα στους αναγνώστες να ταξιδέψουν νοερά και στις δύο χώρες ανακαλύπτοντας τες μέσα από τις περιγραφές της συγγραφέως. Πέρα από αυτό είναι ένα ξεχωριστό ανάγνωσμα που ίσως κυλάει λίγο νωχελικά καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του για να σπιντάρει κυριολεκτικά στα τελευταία κεφάλαια μετατρέποντας το σε ένα θρίλερ με έντονη δράση και αγωνία για την κατάληξη του. Το τέλος του αφήνει ξέπνοους τους αναγνώστες που παρακολουθούν εμβρόντητοι το κουβάρι της αφήγησης να φτάνει στην άκρη του νήματος με ένα αίσθημα φρίκης που πραγματικά δεν περίμεναν ότι θα συνέβαινε όσο το διάβαζαν.
Η ηρωίδα της Theils, η Νόρα Σαν, μας γυρνάει στο παρελθόν. Στο παρελθόν της παιδικής ή της εφηβικής μας ηλικίας θυμίζοντας μας μια εποχή που έχει περάσει στη λήθη της μνήμης μας φέρνοντας μας ακούσματα, εικόνες, μυρωδιές και γεύσεις της δεκαετίας του ’80. Ακολουθούμενοι το παρελθόν της Νόρα καθώς στην Αγγλία θα ξαναβρεθεί με έναν παλιό της συμμαθητή, τον Αντρέας, θα καταφέρουμε να γνωρίσουμε λίγο παραπάνω τον χαρακτήρα της αλλά και το περιβάλλον γύρω της κάνοντας τη ιδιαίτερα συμπαθή στα μάτια μας. Τη Νόρα την αγαπάς καθώς διαβάζεις τις προσπάθειες της να ανακαλύψει τι έγιναν τα δύο κορίτσια και πως χάθηκαν τόσο ξαφνικά τα ίχνη τους αλλά και τη συναισθηματική πάλη που γίνεται μέσα της για τον Αντρέας. Για εμένα είναι σίγουρα το alter ego της Lone Theils η οποία λειτουργεί κατά βάση όπως η δημιουργός της φαντάζομαι ως δημοσιογράφος που ήταν καθώς τώρα έχει επιστρέψει στη Δανία και έχει αφοσιωθεί πλήρως στη συγγραφή αστυνομικών μυθιστορημάτων.
Η Theils φέρνει στο προσκήνιο μια υπόθεση από αυτές που χαρακτηρίζονται cold cases θέλοντας να τονίσει με «Το θανάσιμο πέρασμα» το πως η εξαφάνιση δύο ανθρώπων που ζουν στο περιθώριο περνάει ίσως στα ψιλά γράμματα των ερευνών της αστυνομίας πιστεύοντας ότι εφόσον δεν υπάρχει κάποιος που να αγωνία για την τύχη τους να μη χρειάζεται και να βρεθούν στην τελική. Ένα θέμα που πραγματικά η γραφή της Lone Theils μας βάζει σε σκέψεις για το πως θα έπρεπε να ενεργούν οι αρχές σε τέτοιες περιπτώσεις. Αλλά τονίζει επίσης και τη διαδικασία που ακολουθείται, ειδικά από μια δημοσιογράφο, όταν χρειάζεται να ανακαλύψει τι κρύβεται πίσω από μια εξαφάνιση ανάγοντας κατά αυτόν τον τρόπο και τις κοινωνικές προεκτάσεις του θέματος. Σαν να σκαλίζει τη συνείδηση μας με ένα σκληρό και αιχμηρό εργαλείο παλεύοντας να βγάλει στην επιφάνεια όλη αυτή τη βαρβαρότητα και την απάνθρωπη συμπεριφορά εκείνων των πράξεων που δίνουν τσιμπιές στην ενσυναίσθηση μας μέσα από τα κοινωνικά της σχόλια που συναντάμε στη ροή της αφήγησης.
Σαν πρώτο βιβλίο της σειράς της Νόρα Σαν η Lone Theils θέλει να μας γνωρίσει λίγο περισσότερο την ηρωίδα της οπότε ίσως κάποιοι σκεφτούν ότι εστιάζει κάπως παραπάνω στην ίδια και της προσωπική της ζωή αφήνοντας λίγο σε δεύτερη μοίρα την αναζήτηση των δύο κοριτσιών που απεικονίζονται στην φωτογραφία. Παρ’ όλα αυτά πρόκειται για ένα εξαιρετικό ντεμπούτο με κλιμακούμενη ροή αφήγησης που ξεκινάει με αργά βήματα αλλά μόλις καταφέρουμε να μπούμε στην ιδιαίτερη ατμόσφαιρα του αρχίζει να μας σφίγγει επικίνδυνα στα γρανάζια του πιάνοντας τον εαυτό μας να θέλουμε να δούμε τι θα γίνει παρακάτω. Καταφέρνει να μετατρέψει «Το θανάσιμο πέρασμα» σε ένα page turner βιβλίο μέσα από τις πολλαπλές ανατροπές της ιστορίας της δίνοντας στους αναγνώστες την αίσθηση ότι παρακολουθούν κινηματογραφική ταινία. Και είναι σίγουρο ότι όλα αυτά τα χαρακτηριστικά που διαθέτει το πρώτο της πόνημα μας προτρέπουν να επιλέξουμε και το επόμενο βιβλίο της που θα κυκλοφορήσει από τις εκδόσεις Μεταίχμιο σε μερικούς μήνες.

Fatale Oversteek, de eersteling van Lone Theils, is een vlotte boeiende thriller die elementen van de Scandinavische én de Britse thrillertraditie combineert. En niet alleen omdat het boek zich daar ook afspeelt, en het hoofdpersonage, de Deense journaliste Nora Sand, in Londen woont. De trage start en de manier waarop ze aan het werk gaat met een aantal foto's die uit een oude koffer vallen, die ze in een klein Engels kustplaatsje heeft gekocht, doet toch wel wat Brits aan eerlijk gezegd. Het komt allemaal heel rustig op gang en de gebeurtenissen rollen zich vrij traag voor je ogen uit. En Scotland Yard komt er later eveneens bij kijken, dat helpt natuurlijk ook!
Waar het om draait, is dat ze tussen deze foto's een foto vindt van twee Deense meisjes die jaren terug waren verdwenen op een ferry tussen Denemarken en Engeland. De koffer waarin de foto's zaten, leidt haar naar een beruchte seriemoordenaar die echter ondertussen al een tijdje in de beruchte Wolf Hall gevangenis zit. Tijdens de zoektocht van Nora komt ze echter ook zelf het gevaar tegen en zo mondt het verhaal uiteraard uit in een spannend einde dat goed is opgebouwd.
Het verhaal is best intelligent en boeiend, maar blijft misschien nog wat op de oppervlakte. Er is zeker nog ruimte om het personage van Nora nog wat meer 'body' te geven. Ze beleeft een romantische escapade die wel wat evolutie belooft in een vervolg. Theils beheerst ook de 'thriller'stijl met een vlot taalgebruik dat nergens stokt en ook de dialogen zijn goed uitgeschreven. Psychologisch gezien zou er ook nog wat meer focus gelegd kunnen worden op de nabestaanden en eventuele getuigen. Dit kan er ook wel aan liggen dat het hier om een vrij (k)oude zaak gaat. Een fijne Deense ontdekking om verder op te volgen dus!

De Deense journaliste Nora Sand ontdekt in een oude koffer per toeval een foto van twee verdwenen meisjes. De koffer zou eigendom zijn van een seriemoordenaar die al jaren in de Britse gevangenis zit. Nora gaat op onderzoek uit. Ook Scotland Yard roept haar hulp in. Omdat de contacten met de hoofdinspecteur stroef verlopen, houdt Nora informatie houden. Wat natuurlijk een slecht idee blijkt te zijn... De ontknoping is onverwacht, maar de plot bevat te veel losse eindje en toevalligheden om te overtuigen.

Lupaavalta vaikuttava sarjan aloitusosa, joka kertoo toimittaja Nora Sandista. Nora on itsepäinen, sisukas ja itsenäinen nainen, josta en voinut olla pitämättä. Nora omistautuu työlleen, mutta hänen yksityiselämäänsäkin sivutaan rikoksen selvittelyn ohella. Nora onnistuukin sotkemaan rakkauselämäänsä, mutta työssään hän on hyvä ja periksiantamaton. Lone Theils on itse toiminut ulkomaankirjeenvaihtajana tanskalaiselle lehdelle ja hänen kokemuksensa työstä näkyy kerronnassa. Juonikin eteni mukavan vetävästi ja kerronta oli sujuvaa. Tykkäsin!

W miarę ciekawa, nie wynudziłam się, szybko się czyta. Czytałam recenzje i niektórzy pisali, że końcówka zaskakująca a mnie nie zaskoczyła, domyśliłam się wcześniej o co chodzi bo podobny motyw już kojarzyłam z innych książek. Wciągnęła mnie na tyle, że zamierzam sięgnąć po kolejną część.

Nora Sand é uma jornalista dinamarquesa correspondente em Londres que, numa viagem de trabalho, acaba por entrar numa loja de artigos em segunda mão e comprar uma mala onde encontra algumas fotografias misteriosas. Após alguma reflexão, consegue finalmente perceber porque as raparigas das fotos lhe parecem tão familiares: foram tiradas numa viagem de ferry, entre a Dinamarca e Inglaterra, que ficou marcada pelo desaparecimento de duas jovens, sem que o caso tivesse sido resolvido nos 30 anos que decorreram entretanto. Convencida que está na posse de novas pistas, Nora decide que esta será a sua próxima história para a revista em que trabalha e, com o apoio do seu chefe, decide começar a investigar por conta própria.
A Última Travessia parte de uma premissa refrescante, pelo facto de abordar um caso de polícia que está a ser investigado por uma jornalista; depois, há qualquer coisa na investigação de casos antigos que acho cativante. O primeiro volume desta série com o nome da sua protagonista leva algum tempo a arrancar, o que não é necessariamente um ponto fraco, até porque a autora aproveita para desenvolver a sua personagem principal e os relacionamentos com as personagens que a rodeiam. Gostei da Nora Sand, ainda que me tenha parecido algo desnecessário e forçado o caso amoroso que serve de enredo secundário neste livro.
O caso policial é interessante, ainda que tenha sentido alguma inconstância no seu desenvolvimento e dinâmica. Há momentos muito intensos e interessantes, mas outros parecem não fazer a narrativa avançar. A conclusão do caso surpreende o leitor, o que é sempre um bónus neste tipo de livro e a tensão dramática da parte final da história está bem conseguida.
Sem tem sido uma leitura completamente arrebatadora, considero que A Última Travessia é um bom livro de estreia, deixando boas perspetivas para os livros seguintes da série que já conta, atualmente, com três volumes. Fico a aguardar as novas aventuras de Nora Sand.

Sem tem sido uma leitura completamente arrebatadora, considero que A Última Travessia é um bom livro de estreia, deixando boas perspetivas para os livros seguintes da série que já conta, atualmente, com três volumes. Fico a aguardar as novas aventuras de Nora Sand.

Myslela jsem si, že tohle bude po sto a kousek stránkách snad moje první DNF ale pak jsem si řekla, že nejsem quitter a když už jsem se přelouskala 100 tak těch 319 nějak dám, ne?
Tohle bylo tak zbytečně dlouhý, zmatečný, něco i zbytečný a kdybyste to nevěděli, tak ve Velké Británii očividně není skoro nikde signál, to se totiž dozvíte tak na každé druhé straně. Hele, já fakt miluju, nebo jsem alespoň dost dlouho milovala, kriminálky, ale téhle prostě chybí asi nějaký ten šmrnc, protože bych to napsala i já, a to nejsem žádný genius.
(Možná, že právě nějaká ta genialita jí chybí, protože to je to, co v takových knihách vždy hledám a chci a tohle bylo prostě TAK jednoduchý.)
