Historioitsija Titus Liviuksen (n. 59 eaa.-17) 142 kirjaa käsittäneen latinankielisen teoksen Ab urbe condita (Kaupungin perustamisesta lähtien) 21. kirja on meille säilyneistä teossarjan kirjoista suosituimpia. Se kertoo, kuinka yksi antiikin historian taitavimmista sotapäälliköistä, Karthagon Hannibal, lähtee uhmaamaan Välimeren herruudesta kilpailevaa Roomaa.Sotatoimet alkavat nykyisen Espanjan itärannikolta. Kun Hannibal tuhoaa Rooman ystäväkaupungin Saguntumin, syttyy toinen puunilaissota (218-201), jota Livius luonnehtii "kaikkien aikojen merkittävimmäksi sodaksi".Hannibal marssittaa armeijansa, noin 110 000 miestä ja 37 sotanorsua, Pyreneitten kautta nykyiseen Etelä-Ranskaan, yli Rhonejoen ja ylös Alpeille. Vihamielisten vuoristoheimojen vaaniessa marssirivistö etenee työläästi solissa ja liukkailla rinteillä. Hankaluuksia lisäävät lumi ja maanvyörymät. Kallioita murtaen raivataan tie Alpeilta Pojoen laaksoon. Titus Livius (Patavinus) (64 or 59 BC – AD 17)—known as Livy in English, and Tite-Live in French—was a Roman historian who wrote a monumental history of Rome and the Roman people – Ab Urbe Condita Libri (Books from the Foundation of the City) – covering the period from the earliest legends of Rome before the traditional foundation in 753 BC through the reign of Augustus in Livy's own time. He was on familiar terms with the Julio-Claudian dynasty, advising Augustus's grandnephew, the future emperor Claudius, as a young man not long before 14 AD in a letter to take up the writing of history. Livy and Augustus's wife, Livia, were from the same clan in different locations, although not related by blood.

A good edition of the first book of Livy's history of the Hannibalian War, which I found useful while translating the Latin to English on the LatinStudy list (see https://www.quasillum.com/study/latin...). I spotted only one error: Hannibal marched north along the west bank of the Rhône, not the east bank (p. 34). There's a 42-page introduction, a clean text, extensive notes, and (unusually) a Latin-English vocabulary. And now on to Book XXII....
