USA Today bestselling author Catherine Gayle presents another novel in the emotional Portland Storm hockey romance series.

Can you fall in love when you’ve never loved yourself?

Universally misjudged, Blake Kozlow doesn’t let society get under his skin. After all, those misunderstandings have never affected his career. As a center for the Portland Storm, he’s lived his life as a Free Agent—particularly with women. But when he meets a gorgeous, curvy special education teacher, Blake realizes he’s finally met the one person who truly understands him.

Beatriz Castillo knows exactly what she wants—to teach her students that nothing can hold them back. A few years ago, her health was spiraling out of control, but Bea took her life back. Now, she uses her vivacious personality to prove to everyone, especially her students, that anything is possible.

Perpetually impulsive and spontaneous, Blake turns on the charm. But Bea’s unprepared to be on the receiving end of such brazen attention. As they grow closer and their attraction intensifies, their inner demons threaten everything. They’ve both always lived on the fringes of life. But moving forward will require Bea and Blake to step into the spotlight—together.

A wonderful balance between sweet, sexy and emotional. In this, the twelfth book in her Portland Storm series, Catherine Gayle continues her NHL romance world with the story of generally disliked Blake (Koz) Kozlow and special education teacher Beatriz Castillo.

Koz knows his lack of filter and difficulty recognizing social cues has led to many misunderstandings. So far though, it hasn’t affected his career. But when things went downhill after his second date with the beautiful and lively Bea, he’s determined to use his latest faux pas to get the woman he knows can understand and accept him.

Bea loves her job knowing she can make a difference with her students and not even the prospect of having the Portland Storm’s center helping out in her classroom will damper her spirits. After all, she took control of her health, doesn’t let her family influence her (too much), skillfully manages her class, what can the brash and impulsive Koz do besides turn on the charm?

As the two of them are forced together, Bea learns a bit more about what makes Koz tick and begins to see beyond his cheeky exterior, but as their bond and attraction begin to grow Bea must face her insecurities in order for them to go forward.

There’s a good reason for this series’ long-standing. Gayle is notorious for writing about real y difficult issues woven in a heartfelt romance with a hockey backdrop, and Free Agent is no exception. From Bea’s health problems and the way she took control of her life and health to Blake’s interesting personality and the reasons behind it, I was pulled into their somewhat tempestuous story.

The book’s romance at times clashes with the weight of the issues Bea has to deal with and never entirely reaches a swoon inducing happy ever after, but rather tends towards a steady journey to long lasting happiness between characters who I hope will continue to grow contentedly in future installments.

Free Agent is book #12 of the Portland Storm series by Catherine Gayle. It is told from both points of view with a happy ending.

One of the things I’ve always appreciated about author Catherine Gayle is her ability to weave all kinds of real life issues into her fictional characters lives and in Free Agent both the hero and heroine are sporting some big time issues. I love when characters show growth throughout a story and in this book, both the hero and heroine had to learn to love and accept themselves before they could let someone love them and for one that came a bit easier than the other. Free Agent was an emotional story of growth, loss, acceptance and love, but most of all it was two people finding the right person to love them just the way they are and knowing they are the perfect one for them.

I’ll admit I had pretty much figured out what was going on with Blake Kozlow in the previous few books. He reminded me of someone I know and love and so his problems weren’t that big of a surprise to me, but the fact that he was aware of his issues and wanted to be a better man was a huge deal on many levels. I loved that despite his reservations being required to work in a special education classroom brought back memories he’d rather forget that he found it rewarding not only in the way he was able to relate and inspire the kids, but in that it allowed him to work with Bea Castillo, a woman he somehow upset on their one and only date months before.

For the last several books in this series readers have had a chance to watch Bea Castillo’s progress from the weight loss surgery she had to improve her life. I admired Bea for taking this step to get healthy and I loved watching her confidence build especially after she began working with Dani Webber (now Williams) on a wardrobe that flattered her changing body. While I could understand Bea’s body issues because of the rapid loss and extra skin, I’ll be honest in saying that her fragile feelings got a bit old especially after she really got to know Koz. I felt like she would pick up on the slightest little thing just to be able to pull away and in doing so she continually made Koz feel bad about himself. I went into this book questioning this pairing because I really liked Bea and I wasn’t sure Koz was a good match and just a few chapters in I was questioning it because I felt like Bea was just beating Koz up at every turn and that was even AFTER she realized his issues. I get the mindset she had, I can even understand her feelings, but after a few times I was done with her bad behavior and really loved that Koz’s grandmother questioned her devotion to Koz as well.

I did love this story on many levels but I also felt a bit beat up after finishing it as it was more angst filled than I usually like. I appreciated that the Storm organization was behind Koz and Bea when necessary, but especially Koz because I think he needed to know that even when he screws up he has people in his corner. There were so many moments when despite Koz’s age and experience, I could see that lost little boy inside of him and it broke my heart.

Poignant yet hopeful with a side of sexy, Free Agent is an excellent addition to Catherine Gayle’s Portland Storm series.

Blake "Koz" Kozlow has always been seen as the cocky, obnoxious, unfiltered, impulsive, bad boy. Trouble seems to follow him and he often puts his foot in his mouth. So most people think he is rude, offensive, annoying, and does not care.

Beatriz Castillo is a special education teacher who is good friends with Dani Weber Williams, his team mate's wife. Bea underwent a personal transformation, but still has body issues and insecurities. She has no experience with men or relationships. She is organized, tough, feisty, and sweet, but is also vulnerable, unsure, and fearful of letting men get too close.

Koz already managed to offend her in the past. Now a year later, he has offended a lot of people and caused a PR nightmare for the team that leads to some volunteering. Bea really does not want to have to spend time with him, but she cannot deprive her students. Bea is certainly not ready for Koz to try to charm her and pursue her. But as they spend more time together, their attraction grows.

Oh my...Koz...who knew?! As we get into his head, it is like uncovering all the secrets to this misunderstood man. He's got issues and he knows it. He does not want to be the rude jerk he appears to be. His mouth sometimes works faster than his brain and by the time he catches up, he has already said something he cannot take back. He is socially awkward and has some personal struggles that affect his life.

Bea is the perfect person to ask for help since she is a patient and kind teacher. And he really sees Bea better than she sees herself. She has her own issues getting out of her head that impact her body image and self worth. They both have so much to give, such big hearts, and can help and challenge each other. And they can make each other laugh.

But it is hard to love someone until you love yourself and both of them struggle with self worth, self love, insecurities, and have not had much unconditional acceptance and love in their lives. But it also takes trust, patience, understanding, and tolerance of mistakes. My heart literally broke for Blake in his moments of vulnerability. And even though Bea's self deprecating thoughts got a bit repetitive, they were understandable and realistic.

I was not expecting to feel so much with Koz's book. And it had me near tears and totally emotionally invested. I did not expect to completely fall in love with him and see so many different aspects of his personality. I enjoy it when an author surprises me and makes me adore a character I was not sure I could based on previous books. They were not a typical hero and heroine due to their issues and experiences. I loved getting both points of view especially Blake's unfiltered one, and they were easy to relate to. I liked how they complimented each other, but also challenged the other. And they did have some situations in their lives that they have to deal with that could bring them closer together or push them further apart.

This installment was funny, sweet, emotional, and dealt with some current and relevant topics. This was one of my favorite Portland Storm stories and couples. And it is always fun to get to spend some time with the team members and WAGS as well.

I was gifted a copy by the author.

It's hard to believe I have been on this journey for 12 books now! Catherine Gayle brings us the much maligned Koz--uncouth and not well liked by anyone. And Bea who we have met previously as well. I love that this author always ties in real life and/or real world issues with her stories. This book does that as well.

Wrapped up in a blossoming love story is the need for acceptance and approval from family. Self image and satisfaction in who you are. And the rights of those who have different needs and what their lives look like.

So wonderful when a previous bad guy gets his redemption. Totally was team Koz by the time the story ended. As always, great to see the other team members. Sad to think the series will end in just a few more books but I know we will continue to get great work from this author.

I'm proud to be a Catherine Gayle fan and stories like Free Agent are the reason why. There is no need to offer up a piece of your heart because these characters lay claim to all of it. From every hardship that Beatriz has had to overcome, to the private inner doubt that Blake secretly endures. These characters get under your skin in the worst possible way, but it feels good despite the heartache known to be headed their way. What appealed most to me however is the message. We all matter on this great big ball of dirt we call home. Feelings matter, people matter and life matters, no matter how big or small. That's something we all need to hear and remember in this day and age. Ms. Gayle is one of a handful of authors that I don't mind losing sleep for. Masterfully written.

I loved loved this book. I say this every time I read a book in this series, but these two are my favorite. !!! Seriously though, I loved Bea's tenacity, and it is finally great to learn why Blake is the way he is. These two BOTH had massive issues to overcome, but they did it together. And Swwooooonnnn lordy he is truly worth pining over.

I voluntarily reviewed this book I received from the author. I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I did.

This story was so genuine - felt so grounded.

For once, we are not dealing with perfect protagonists who always say the perfect things whilst being comfortable in their perfect bodies.  I mean, yes, this is fiction, but these characters together made complete sense to me.

I accept that within the confines of this book, the author has only lightly scratched the surface of a much wider issue about body image, but in raising it, has not distracted from the underlying story arc.

This is a quick, fun read with a healthy dose of emotion thrown in.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

It's hard to read Bea's issues regarding her body after losing so much weight. She was really tough on Blake.

Blake has ADHD and he's ordered by his employer to help Bea in her classroom where she is special needs teacher. She recognizes his inability to focus and works with him to find ways to focus with adult coloring books and crocheting.

Their issues are dealt with and there is enough hockey to satisfy most. It's a pretty good book.

Catherine Gayle, this was almost too much! Many months ago, Catherine announced that Koz would be getting a book of his own. If you have ready any of Catherine’s previous Portland Storm books you know how controversial Koz can be. He’s known to be an ass, who says the most inappropriate things at always the wrong time. He seems to only look out for himself and doesn’t really care about the repercussions. You always knew there was more to the story that you just weren’t seeing, but it was difficult to imagine how this guy was going to redeem himself. Then Catherine gave us his book.

In Free Agent, we really get to finally look inside Koz’s world and see why he is the way he is. In order to avoid any spoilers I’m not going to reveal much here, but when we are enlightened to what is really going on with Koz things make so much more sense. I felt like I instantly understood his situation and could sympathize with why he acts the way he does.

Bea is a beautiful woman who doesn’t see herself that way. She’s been heavy all her life and though she has lost a lot of weight, she still carries a lot of burdens that weigh down her spirit. She doesn’t want to like Koz, and really has a lot of reasons why she shouldn’t. Yet when these two really are able to communicate their relationship is beautiful.

What surprised me most with this story is how willing Koz is to fight for their relationship. It would have been easy for him at many points to just give up and stop fighting. But he doesn’t, and that makes him even more endearing.

We do get to see some of our good Storm friends (Dani and Cody, Webs and even Jim Sutter stand out). If you’ve read the whole series it’s great to learn more about how those relationships continue to grow and develop. It’s like catching up with old friends.

I would highly recommend reading this book, especially if you have read any of the prior Storm series. Catherine always tackles difficult topics with beauty and skill, and she certainly doesn’t let us down here. Thank you for giving a voice to Koz’s story and for making him a guy you can cheer for.

I did receive an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review, but I also purchased my own copy of this book for my personal library and to continue to support this author’s work.

Blake and Bea are polar opposites on the outside but on the inside they have more in common than they realize. One possesses a very calm, reserved personality; the other is considered to be more of a wild, non-filtered personality. Blakes personality is very strong, too strong for many people, including the fans of the Portland Storm. Learning to stop and think before he talks or responds to situations is a character trait he struggles with greatly. Knowing what lays behind some of his actions pulls everything into perspective for me, it’s a daily struggle in many of the lives I interact with daily. To see how much he loves his family, really will changes so many hearts and minds about Blake. I never thought I would be able to say Blake’s a great guy, but I am so glad to say that.

Bea has been struggling with many negative emotions surrounding her weight and her choice in men. After choosing to put her health first and make some drastic changes, she starts to receive negative emotional support from her family. I’m so glad she had some love and support from her friends. She puts her heart in soul into everything she does, and she knows the struggles her kids go through day in and day out, she knows she can help Blake and can’t turn him away. She never did intend to fall in love with him, partake in a risky photo shoot, or be the rock he would need so shortly after reconnecting with Blake.

Ms. Gayle put so many feels into this book, so many things that we all as people struggle with daily. How she seems to tackle these issues with so much respect has me in awe. The most recent releases from Ms. Gayle have touched so many readers, its crazy! To watch how “real” Blake and Beas’ relationship is, is like watching a reality tv show. So many ups and downs, environmental aspects, supporting friends, shaming family members, and how inspiring other people can be, Ms. Gayle put it in here. Free Agent is a great novel that grasps true day to day living; pain and suffering, stereotypes we place upon others, and forgiveness. I would highly recommend Free Agent to any romance reader, yes it’s a sports romance however it connects on an emotional level to anyone who has a heart for romance.

I’ve been a fan of this author for years now and I know I can always rely on her to deliver a sports romance that showcases both hockey and a love story. I’ve also come to expect Miss Gayle to tackle pertinent social issues in her books. Free Agent is a great example as to how the author’s use of important social topics keeps the stories relevant and fresh, while still providing a romance and couple I enjoy watching fall in love. As with the entire Portland Storm series, there are some overlapping storylines and cameos of past couples, but Free Agent can easily be read as a standalone.

Fans of the series will undoubtedly recognize both the hero and heroine in this book; because Koz previously played the role of secondary character readers love to hate, I was eager to see how the author would turn the tide. I have to say while I wasn’t surprised about the revelations regarding the hero, I loved them and I really loved seeing him develop over the course of the book. It’s always nice to get inside a character’s head, but that’s especially true when they’ve been so misunderstood. And seeing Blake off the ice when he really let his softer sides show proved to be utterly endearing. Although I enjoyed the transformation Blake underwent in Free Agent, I wasn’t expecting how much the heroine would develop during the book. In previous books, Bea seemed the quintessential character with an interesting story and a solid head on her shoulders. Certainly some of her body image issues weren’t unexpected, but I didn’t foresee just how much her self-esteem would need bolstering. Although Bea’s consistent second guessing of Blake’s intentions sometimes felt repetitive, I enjoyed this couple and loved seeing how Blake supported and helped Bea feel confident in herself as well as their relationship.

Free Agent is a great reminder that appearances and initial impressions don’t reflect the full story and Miss Gayle did a wonderful job getting readers to look deeper. I’d definitely recommend this book if you’re a fan of complex characters.

This book focuses on how our own negative opinions of ourselves can influence our entire lives, and how the lack of support of those closest to us can contribute to those negative opinions.

Bea is a strong woman, who has taken control of her life, and is making it what she wants, regardless of what she has to do to accomplish it. However, she still doesn't feel like she deserves to have someone special in her life. She has a family that doesn't understand the dedication it takes to completely makeover her life like she has. She has a low self esteem and a horrible body image, despite everything she has done to improve her health and lifestyle. She also has a tendency to assume the worst from people, because she doesn't see herself as others do.

Koz is a pro hockey player, who has spent his entire life trying to control his impulses. No one understands him, and this makes him unlikable to most. But he knows what he wants when he sees Bea, and will do whatever it takes to make her see herself the way he does.

I love how understanding and supportive Koz is. Regardless of the problems he has, he does his best to move past them, compensate for them, and be there for Bea. He goes out of his way to show her how beautiful she is, and that is just amazing!

This is a great story, and shows that just because you make changes that improve your health, you still have the same person on the inside, and sometimes you have to work on the person on the inside to make yourself completely happy. As much as I disliked Koz in previous books because of his attitude, I've come to have a new respect for him, because of how loving and supportive he was.

Blake "Koz" Kozlow has been a hated man in on the Portland Storm team. He has no filter and the things that come flying out of his mouth are offensive or at least to some they are. We never knew why he was like that. I assumed he was just a big jerk but that isn't the case. There is way more to him that what you see on the outside.

Bea, a special education teacher, dated Koz once and it didn't end well. Now he is back in her life due to something he said publicly and needs to atone for.

Bea's character is one that I can identify with, while I didn't have gastric bypass surgery, I do know what it is to be the DUFF. Bea is perfect for Koz because she can understand what makes him tick. Why he is the way he is. She just needs to believe that she deserves him and not always think the worst of situations.

I also think everyone should have someone in their lives like Koz's grandmother. What a great character she was. Vivacious and afraid to take no prisoners.

This story was one of my favorites and it was very well written. True to life and raw as well as emotional at times. It's very hard to see ourselves as others see us and Koz never stops trying to get Bea to see herself the way that he does.

Ms. Gayle had done it again. I never thought that I would like Koz but now that his story has been told, I am a huge fan just as I am of Ms. Gayle.

Weight loss is a struggle and I chose to do it with diet and exercise but I have a friend who had the surgery and everything Bea was going trough is what my friend has been going through. Kudos for telling this story and making sure the details were on point.

Wow! What an emotional and very real and relevant story this is. Catherine Gayle really knows how to take serious issues and weave them into a beautiful story about learning to love and accept yourself as you are and how that helps you to love and accept others. And how sometimes you need to let someone in so they can help you see you are more than your issues/problems.
Both Blake and Bea are so relatable and likable. Yes Koz (Blake), is actually very likable, loveable really, once you find out why he seems to have no filter. He is not really the arrogant, rude player he is perceived as; we learn this as we come to understand him and also see him interact with Bea. Bea understands Koz and helps him.
We learn that Bea has serious body image issues that have literally shaped her entire adult life and have even strained her relationship with her family because of personal decisions she made for herself that were right for her that they didn’t necessarily agree with. We know that Koz has no problem with his body (remember naked yoga in the locker room) and wants to help Bea feel better about hers because he doesn't see what she sees and he really likes the person she is and finds her beautiful inside and out and wants her to give all of herself to him.
I really love them as a couple and felt every emotion they went through as their relationship develops and they help each other deal with their issues, problems and feelings.
Another hit in the Portland Storm series!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Free Agent is the eighteenth book in the Portland Storm Series. While it is a standalone, reading it as part of the series is even better since this book finally answers some questions about the hero, Blake ‘Koz’ Kozlow, which might have risen in the previous books.
Early in the series, Koz is considered a total jerk to everyone around him and only a limited few team members tolerated him. Once you become immersed in the Storm books and get used to Ms. Gayle’s MO, you start questioning whether Koz can help his idiotic behaviour. Due to a situation, Koz comes in close contact with Beatriz Castillo, a gorgeous special education teacher he had met previously. While Koz was very interested in getting to know Bea better, he was not one of Bea’s favourite people. On top of that, Bea also has baggage of her own to deal with, making it more difficult to convince Bea to give their relationship a chance to develop. However, when families and an innocent mistake threaten their budding relationship, they have no option but to love themselves as they are to be able to commit to their love and trust.
Once again, Catherine Gayle’s characters are authentic and larger-than-life. It isn’t easy to live life being in Koz’s shoes were everything is a challenge and Bea’s insecurities and weight problems are issues commonly found in real life. Obviously, Koz being Koz, naked yoga and swear words are expected :)

Redemption, Gayle’s newest Portland Storm book is all about overcoming hurdles and fixing how the public sees us, or how we view ourselves. This is the journey of Blake Kozlow and Bea Castillo.

We all make mistakes, most of us don’t screw up quite as grandly as Koz, Blake Kozlow. If you’ve read any of the Portland Storm series (and I sincerely hope you have) you’ve undoubtedly read some cringe worthy comment or scene involving Koz. He’s a self proclaimed douchecanoe, he has a constant case of foot in mouth disease. Can he be redeemed? Can Catherine Gayle take this annoying, immature character and make him sweet and lovable? Oh yes she can!

We’ve met a Bea before, she’s Dani’s quiet, used to be fat friend and client. She sees herself as a DUFF not a beautiful mature woman worthy of love. Her redemption is internal, can she see herself the way others see her, will she finally believe herself to be desirable?

The budding relationship is full of sweetness, frustration and several laugh out loud moments. You’ll be excited to hear from some old Storm favorites, and meet a few new characters as well.
This book is a welcome trip back into the fictional Portland Storm universe, and it’s a beautiful journey you’ll be glad you experienced.

Catherine Gayle's signature story is back! After being disappointed with Book 9-11, I was too afraid to read this one. But this story is enjoyable.

I had a suspicion about Koz's ADHD since he appeared in Book 7. But learning about him in this book, Koz wins our hearts. My heart breaks for Koz and his sassy/cool grandma. I love the relationship between these two. The impact of recurrent cancer on families and the sense of helplessness hit me more in this story compared to Katie's story.

I have to wonder tho what is it between his grandma and nurse Brett? Unfortunately, no answer provided, but I don't really mind.

Bea, on the other hand, is a character we all can relate to. Aside from the weight-loss surgery, body image issues are something we all experience. And it's refreshing to have a character FAR from perfect.

I love how this book describes Webs as a coach. He has been a constant side character since Book 1. As a player, as a dad, and now as a coach. We don't really get to see him as a coach before this book, and now we know how the younger players look up to him. Koz-Webs moments are perfect.

I still can't understand Dani-Harry.. but these two bring humor into the story!

Blake (Koz) Kozlow has let his mouth get him trouble again. Now his team leaders are making him do his penance with the one person who doesn't want anything to do with him, Beatriz (Bea) Castillo. But, Koz needs Bea to not only work with her special ed students. He also needs her help. See there is a reason he keeps making theses mistake and Koz feels Bea will be able to help him not make them. Bea gives in and finally gives in to let Koz help with her kids and she agrees to try and find the things he needs to help himself.
However, in helping him things are starting to go in a direction Bea not sure she can handle. Because, Bea has never loved herself because she has been fat most of her life. That until she decided to get her life under control and had bariatric surgery. Now, that she has lost all the weight that doesn't make it easier to love herself or even be able to look in the mirror and see all her hard work. Because, when she looks in the mirror she still sees the fat girl.
Will Koz be able to get Bea to see what he sees? Will Bea be able to let anyone love her, even herself? Will Koz be able what he needs to control his mouth?

Catherine Gayle never ceases to amaze me. She has knocked it out of the park AGAIN. In the latest installment of the Portland Storm series, you learn more about Bea (Dani's best friend) and Blake Kozlow. While the story centers around Bea's struggles with body issues and Koz's issues with having special needs, the deeper message of accepting yourself for who you are, loving yourself no matter what, and letting others love you shines through clearly. I found this book to be such an honest depiction of the thoughts that run through our heads when we are feeling self-conscious or insecure and the fact that we often do see ourselves the way others see us. The raw emotion and completely unfiltered access to what the characters were thinking and feeling made this book incredibly special, and I also LOVED the authentic Hispanic touches! Plus, fans of Mia and Q will get a quick cameo. :) If you're looking for a book about being your best self, and loving who that person is, this is absolutely it. I received an ARC for this honest review!

Free Agent is the latest book in Catherine Gayle's Portland Storm hockey romance series featuring Blake 'Koz' Kozlow, the player that everyone loves to hate. Koz doesn't seem to have a care in the world and never believes in censoring himself, so when he gets himself into hot water over a social media post, the team assigns him to work in Bea Castillo's classroom.

I loved reading Bea and Koz's journey to romantic happiness. They both have many inner thoughts and insecurities that complicated their journey to a Happily Ever After, but their imperfections make the characters that much more lovable. Koz can be sweet and is fiercely protective over those he loves. I love reading him win over Bea's reluctant heart.

I highly recommend this book. I truly love and appreciate how much research Catherine puts into her novels. I love her whole series and Koz has been another great read. One-Click now!

They’re like oil and water … but they work! It’s always fun to return to the Portland Storm series. It’s filled with a rugged group of down-to-earth hockey players and the families that love them. In this book, we get hot shot, mouthy Blake Kozlow’s story. He’s notorious for shooting off his mouth and saying things that people just can’t believe he actually said … but beneath it all, he’s truly a good guy. The characters were both easy to get drawn into, and the plot was enjoyable.

Blake Kozlow has never met a woman he didn’t love, and Bea Castillo is no exception! He turns on all of his best moves to try to win her over, but whatever he did to make her mad previously seems to be sticking around because she’s not giving an inch!

Special education teacher Beatriz Castillo really liked Koz when she was first introduced to him … until he put his foot in his mouth and said something that pushed all of her internal buttons and sent her on the run. She has issues that she’s dealing with all on her own, so the last thing she needs is some hockey player that thinks he’s God’s gift pretending to like her!

I am in love with this story. I received a complementary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and I am proud to say that "Free Agent" is another smash hit for Catherine Gayle. This is by far my favorite book in this series. I had such a visceral reaction to this story for several reasons. I have desperately wanted this character to get his story for a long time, and true to her word, the author committed to not writing this character until it was the right time. It was well worth the wait. These characters are complex, flawed and beautifully written to take us on an emotional roller coaster from the first page to the last and I wouldn't have it any other way. If you haven't read any books in this series, start from the beginning. This book, this series and this author is a must have for any fan of contemporary romance fan.
Happy Reading...enjoy!

I am going to be very sad the day the Portland Storm series comes to an end. I have read... no devoured every single installment and always come away looking for more. As an Australian where Ice Hockey is not a massive sport, I love being able to read about the game. Throw in some romance and its a win-win!
Free Agent is no exception. The story of obnoxious Blake and very self conscious Bea. This one hit a few chords with me. Some of the issues faced, and ms Gayle does not pull any punches, really hit home.
I have found as the series has progressed, the manner in which Catherine has written about real life and hard to talk about issues, have grown and deepend. Some material is just downright hard (but glad I did) to read and get through. But she balances this with some bloody good news.

In all, get into it! Start at number 1 and don't stop reading.

Blake Kozlow, hockey player, has no filter. It's cost him one job and put his job with the Portland Storm in jeopardy. As penance and to try and repair his reputation, Blake is required to volunteer with a special education class. Beatriz Castillo is the teacher of that class and she doesn't want Blake anywhere near her or her kids. They went on one date awhile back and Blake's lack of filter pissed her off. But Blake doesn't know what he said that made Bea so mad, and when they finally talk she realizes that Blake himself had learning difficulties and she agrees to try and help him. Blake is determined to get back in Bea's good graces, but her lack of confidence continues to undermine things between them. This book was exhausting. Bea's issues, centered around being a former DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend,) were understandable but got tedious to read about over and over.

I wish I could give this more than 5 stars, I’m a huge fan of Catherine Gayle’s Portland Storm series & this book is the evidence of why. It’s beautifully written, emotional, funny & brings to light not 1, not 2 but 3 emotional topics as well as a wealth of hockey knowledge. With the understanding & care that she’s taken to create such an emotional ride, she’s definitely brought out the strong characteristics of both Koz & Bea. Koz wasn’t a character that I liked during this series but after this story he’s definitely grown on me. Bea’s character was the perfect foil to Koz & her own imperfections & her career choice definitely helped her understand & deal with him. Koz’s grandma was an amazing character, full of laughter, heart & strength. Definitely recommend.

I have to admit I wasn’t sure about how Koz would get his HEA, but as we learned his story, I simply fell in love with him! Koz really is the sweetest, most vulnerable, strongest, kindest, and most giving person. Before even learning his back story, just his thoughts made me re-think every we had learned about him. Bea took a little more to warm up to, and learning where she came from was needed to get to like her. Even so, the fact that she and Koz fit together was so evident, you liked her more and more as they were together. Self-doubt and self-loathing played big in this story, as did learning to see yourself as others see you, and accepting you are a worthy person. These two went through a lot in life but luckily they found each other so they could be happy as they are <3

You ever meet one of those characters and you wonder how the author will ever write a book for them? You know the type. They’re usually a pain in the butt, cocky, and you can’t stand them. That’s Koz. It’s taken twelve books, but maybe, just maybe, we can all like the guy a little now.

Be a is a girl I think most of us can relate to. Most of us have body image issues. We have issues seeing ourselves for who we are. I love that Catherine was able to pull her off.

Free Agent is a great book about two people who are misunderstood and have issues come together and make it work. This is a great addition to the series and a must read.

Catherine Gayle has done an amazing job of making an annoying character into a well loved one. In the series Koz (as he has been called) has always been a jerk to everyone. A more annoying person would be hard to find.
Now, we see the man behind the behavior and get to understand the man Blake apart from the jerk people see Koz to be. Helping him work through his issues is Bea, who has her own share of issues. Together the two of them help each other through the good times and the bad to reach a Happily Ever After that was definitely satisfying for the reader. This book brought it's share of laughs and tears but that only added to the story.

Free Agent is the story of the Portland Storm’s bad boy Blake Koslow and Dani Williams best friend and special ed teacher Bea Castillo. Bea and Koz went on a set up date long ago that did not work out. Koz has a habit of speaking without thinking that regularly gets him in trouble with his team but this time he really blew it. What leads him to these outbursts? To make up for what he has done he is thrown together with Bea. Bea has her own self esteem issues. Can these two broken souls find a way to get along. Catherine Gayle tackles some tough and interesting issues while telling this beautiful but emotional story. Definitely a 10 star read.

I know I say every new book that comes out for this series is my favorite, but hands down this might be it. I've never read such a likable and relatable character like Bea. While Koz is still a DB, him and Bea make relationship goals. While most of Ms. Gayle's books have the typical (but amazing) heroines (beautiful, smart, thin) Bea is the best heroine - She's smart, sassy and beautiful in her own skin. She's like most of the women I know. Insecure with herself and her looks. Koz tries to tell and show her how wonderful she is, but it takes time for her to see it. So sad to see this series end, but I guess all good things must come to an end. :)

*I received an ARC for my honest review.
