Extreme Medical Services Box Set Vol 1-3: Medical Care of the Fringes of Humanity (Extreme Medical Services #1-3) by Jamie Davis I picked this up on chirp and enjoyed it from the very beginning to the end! Can't wait to find more on chirp to continue the series! The narration was perfect! So many wonderful voices! This book follows a new grad from Paramedic school to a unit that is a bit different and secretive in nature. Their clients are supernatural and unnatural in every sense of the word. But someone is trying to stop the work they are doing. It's a book with humor, wit, fun fantasy, mystery, and suspense. Being a nurse it was fun to follow along with these guys! Great fun book! Can't wait for the next one!
Monsters, paramedics and street medicine combine here in a paranormal medical thrill ride that's as cool as it gets. We get a newbie paramedic fresh out of med school assigned to an unknown backwater ambulance Station wondering what the heck he did wrong when he realises his patients are anything but normal. I probably would have flipped in his case but, at the end of the day, the werewolves, vampires, syrens and fairies are a much more interesting lot to treat than the average boring human.
Each of the books ends in a light cliffhanger, episode style, so I do recommend getting the boxset, which also works a lot cheaper. The story starts slow then gently picks up in both pace and tension. And while some readers might find the books a bit tame, due to the lack of high octane action and gore, the mystery, humour and real life medical drama are enough to more than make up for it, if you ask me.
This is real life medical experience added to a great urban fantasy all fans of medical TV series will probably eat up from cover to cover. No pun intended.😉😎
I love the world and characters of this series, even if this first arc of events has too much romance and the climax was a bit of a let down. The ride to the end is a joy to read though.
This is what you'll get in this 3 book set. It sets up its world quickly and cleanly without unnecessary exposition and the story moved well. You get to see the lead, Dean as he moved through acceptance of a world he never knew existed. A full story is contained here but I think you'll want to check out the continuing series. It compared favorably with the early Anita Blake novels before Hamilton decided the sex was more interesting than the supernatural. A very satisfying read if this genre is your cup of tea.
Love how the author incorporates real life medical experiences into his fantasy world, it makes the stories come to life even more. Really like the fact that there is a medically trained team for the Unusuals working alongside humans. Really enjoyed this and didn't want to stop reading.
The story concept held a lot of promise but didn't hold up to it. I noticed previous reviews stating the narrator was awful. I don't believe the issue is with the narrator. The author overwrites the story, so it's boring. We don't need to know every step of every action Dean does. It's explained down to the last detail, so the issue is the poor writing style.
I did listen to the entire set because it was easy to tune out while driving or doing tasks without missing much.
That said, I did give it 2 stars because I enjoyed some of the characters, especially Gibby the vampire and Freddie the zombie. The writing is quite good when people are interacting and engaging in dialogue.
If you're interested in an explanation of EVERY STEP and EVERY MEDICAL DEVICE used by paramedics, this story might be for you-assuming the information is accurate. I'm not in the medical field, so I can't be sure. This is an example of overwriting. Davis explains the exact steps of everything the EMTs do while on a call. EVERY STEP. EVERY ITEM defined and explained. Just tune out until he gets back to the action. The reader just needs to know they applied a tourniquet or hooked up an IV with saline or a specific drug. We don't need to know the steps involved. That slows down the action.
Also, the author portrays women in a confusing and somewhat helpless way. They aren't shrinking violets, yet they are in several situations. Bren and Ashley are often explained as strong women, but then they suddenly aren't for no reason except for a men to demonstrate their machismo.
If Davis were to work with an editor that understands show vs tell and how not to overwrite, I believe he would be worthy of 4 or 5 stars. He's got to break those habits first.
If you liked The Sector General science fiction series this urban fantasy is a great fit for you. In all the paranormal mysteries I've read before there have been detectives, cops, graveyard tenders but no where did I see paramedics. Who takes care of the day to day emergencies and medical issues? How does a an overactive immune system handle the hyperdrive of being made were? How does a a diabetic cope? A birth or a sick infant has a lot of stress to add to hormone systems and sleep deprived parents... who helps them cope?
Lots of books just wave a wand and say magic fixed it. These volumes say, nope, medical care and emergency services work in conjunction with magic. No bones self straighten, hormonal teens are still stressy, and burns still cause pain. The right care and support does the job and we ALL deserve trustworthy EMS.
The series works on many levels and I am cheerfully off to read the next volume.
Jamie Davis’ Extreme Medical Services Box Set Vol 1 - 3: Medical Care of the Fringes of Humanity is, quite simply, extraordinarily great. Dean Flynn and his partner Brynne Garvey are wonderful characters and the whole concept of paramedics serving creatures of myth and legend who live alongside their normal human neighbors is both perfectly imaginative and perfectly executed. Each of these three books deserves five stars and, but for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed, I could go on and on with praises. The books definitely deserve it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the books in this set are most definitely “must reads”, with the caveat you are warned that addiction is very likely.
Bottom line: this book is easy to highly recommend.
This is a fun series with an interesting world. The only critical comment is that the writing style could be tighter as there is a level of repetition which makes the plot drag. The characters are constantly repeating information that was just mentioned and this slows the action and annoyed me as I knew who all the characters are by the middle of the book and where people are going and what they are doing if it was mentioned and did not have to be told repeatedly. That issue aside I enjoyed the books and wanted to see what happened next. Given the author's style I get the impression there will not be a defined end soon as he seems to like ending his books on a cliff hanger. An enjoyable read that is a good way to pass the time.
Honestly, I wanted to like this series - the premise is so cool - but I just couldn't get into it. I gave it a really good try, getting through books one and two, but I didn't finish book three.
I can't quite out my finger on why the series didn't hold my attention. There are things I'm not crazy about - like the fact that each book is episodic, instead of having its own complete narrative arc. Therefore, every book ends on a - well, not so much a cliffhanger, as in the middle of a piece of on going action. And there were pieces of writing that I found clunky, which pulled me out of the story as I immediately rewrote them in my own head.
But it's none of that. I'm still not sure why I lost interest. Maybe there was something about the MC that just didn't resonate? I just don't know.
This was one of the most unique paranormal series I’ve ever read/listened to. Grabbed me from the start with all the interesting and intriguing characters to go with a fascinating storyline. It was full of drama and humor and honestly I couldn’t seem to put it down. The narration was absolutely amazing. Roberto Scarlato is an amazing voice actor who is one of a few that can pull off so many different characters in one book. Well done!! I loved the little bonus at the end of this box set. These were books 1-3 box set. No major cliffhangers but the stories do continue on in each book so these books should be read in order. I highly recommend this book/series!
This tells the story of Dean, a newly qualified paramedic. His job is no ordinary one though as his patients are unusuals. What are unusuals? They are people, but not like you and me. Anything from Vampires to Fairys and Werewolves. The job is far from normal but what is normal anyway?
This is a trilogy that will keep you reading until well after you should have put the book down. It is well written with great descriptions and authentic medical procedures as the author is a nurse and host of the Nursing Show. He is also a training officer for his local EMS program.
I’m not usually a big fan of vampire stories but this series is so different that it is gripping and I am going to read continue to read the rest of the series.
What a great series. Entertaining and inventive idea. DeN newly qualified paramedic is posted to an out of the way station where he learns that the creatures of legend are real and living in his city and it is his job to treat them. The first volume of this series covers his initial period and an outbreak of anti creature violence. The story is entertaining and well written, the characters are great with real depth. The narration is excellent. I look forward to reading the rest of the series. Highly recommended.
"His grandmother had always said to be careful what you wish for. You might just get it. He dozed off thinking about her prophetic words." - Dean Flynn
Wow oh wow oh wow! An urban fantasy that's fresh, original and has more twists, turns and curves than a giant rollercoaster! Thoroughly enjoyed this box set!
"A change is coming. It’s coming one way or the other. You can get on board, get out of the way, or get run over by it. It’s your choice. I’ll no longer be held responsible for the consequences.” - Mike Farver
This is by no means a work of literature. These stories are often poorly worded, awkward, and rather mind-numbingly pedestrian in terms of world view and the lack of sophistication that the characters display. But the basic premise is all right and so I managed to read these three stories although I didn't love them. I don't think I'll be reading the rest of the series.
I read Book 1 a few years ago and really enjoyed it so I bought the first boxset and read books 2 and 3 very quickly. I didn't enjoy book 3 as much (Dean Flynn isn't a bad MC but I like James much more).
If you are into urban fantasy mixed with lots of realistic medical cases extrapolated to fae, lycan and vampire patients and other supernatural beings, you are going to really enjoy this series. I know I did!
This thoroughly engaging set of three books is a great intro to what promises to be a real page-turner of a series. Humans, paranormal, and their interactions are front and center in a gripping tale that centers on an EMS unit that specializes in providing discrete but competent medical care to non-human patients who live hidden alongside us. I could not put the book down!
This boxed set will get your heart racing. So many exciting, and yes, sad moments in these three books. Love the characters. Their dedication to helping their Unusual patients is inspiring. And the CERT program volunteers add an additional level of interest in the stories. Unique characters in unique situations. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series!
Dean,a young paramedic is assigned to station u(for unusual).he's paired up with bryanne who has a vampire boyfriend.dean meets a angel,Ashley, and there's a couple of the us that end up bring volunteers.... Don't make the same mistake I did and read this one before ems 4.
I was hooked. Loved the authenticity of the paramedic calls. It was like being on shift. I thought the paranormal stuff was very well done. I was hooked by the time the plot started getting juicy and the foreshadowing of what’s to come is brilliant. Just ordered the next box set. I HAVE to find out what happens to Ashley.
I love the premise, and Mr. Davis does an excellent job with both the storytelling and the medical side of things. As a fan of modern fantasy and a retired Paramedic, I look forward to continuing the series, thank the Muses I don't have to wait for the next book to be written!
This story is really fun and exciting. It's about a young paramedic who gets assigned to a special unit. First he learns that his calls will be dealing with some very special patients. Then he learns there is a group of people who want his patients gone and are willing to do anything to accomplish their goals.
New author for me. Very good character development. If you like fun paranormal stories you will love this. Before you get 10 pages in you are already hooked. Perhaps it is because I worked in an ambulance for years.Just old fashioned fun with werewolves and vamps
This is an entertaining series with an entertaining storyline and likable characters. As a person that graduated from EMT school many of the medical sections were straight out of the EMT text about scene safety and driving code to the scene. If you enjoy reading about emergency medical services and fantasy creatures aka “Unusuals” this is a good blending of the two genres.
GREAT series - I have the 3-book Box Set's 1-3 & 4-6. I have these books thru CHIRP Audio Books. The narrator is easy on the ears. The stories suck you in and keep you interested to what happens to everyone. I'm looking forward to the next Box set (7-9).
The paramedics scenes were realistic and believable! The stories were pretty ok, too. Overall, I enjoyed them. I had a quibble or two, but I don't want to give any spoilers.
This is an enjoyable set of books that comes at the paranormal from a different perspective. I really I enjoyed the idea of human EMS paramedics providing treatment to paranormals and all the difficulties it entailed. It is an entertaining box set and I look forward to reading more in the series
