Sniffles are never a positive thing, especially when they strike your elephant. This tiny story brings tissue loads of giggles and a couple words of good advice--not only for elephant owners.
Your elephant has a cold, which is never pleasant, but there is one thing that you need to avoid at all costs--him sneezing. And this exactly tells you how to avoid such a catastrophe.
This is a cute, little board book, perfect for pudgy, small hands. It's robust, has thick pages and guarantees hours of reading even after being thrown around a few times. The cover caught my eye right away, and I wanted to hug that elephant before the story even begins. He's a friendly enough elephant and follows every word of advice the little girl in the story gives him. Young listeners will easily set themselves into both the elephant's and the girl's position and be engrossed in the simple but very familiar situation.
The illustrations are colorful, bubbly and hold enough detail to keep little eyes coming back time and again for another glance. Even when someone isn't around to help read-aloud, the story still comes to life in the pictures.
This isn't only a cute tale but holds a few pieces of valuable information on what to do if you have a cold. Lots of bed rest, warmth and love are vital for anyone to get healthy again. Mix this with the subtle amount of funny tension lurking in the background--what if the elephant really sneezes?--and this is a wonderful read for kids ages 2 and up.
I received a complimentary copy and found this so cute that I wanted to leave my honest thoughts.

Any child with the sniffles can relate to poor elephant. There's the initial excitement of being allowed to stay in bed and having someone take care of you, but eventually being sick is just plain boring. Lucky for elephant, the little girl in the story (adorably illustrated by Daniel Wiseman), has plan for taking care of elephant. But she must be careful. After all, "you don't want your elephant to start sneezing!" Susanna Hill repeats this delightful refrain at crucial intervals, a perfect chant for children reading along with a parent. The tension rises as little ones see what's coming, until ah-ah-ah...
This book is a lot of fun! It's a quick read, it's funny, and it's perfect to read aloud to a young child or have a little bit older child read on his/her own. The illustrations are adorable and fun and go hand in hand with the story. Don't let the fact that it's a board book fool you-I could see this being used in classrooms to get the ideas flowing to get kids writing or to practice reading with expression. It would be a great gift for a new parent or young reader.
I had a chance to read an early copy of this and another title in the series, WHEN YOUR LION NEEDS A BATH, in exchange for an honest review. My reviews of the two are similar because the same applies to both stories. :)
This hilarious board book offers a subtle lesson in empathy, with an adorable girl pampering her sniffley blue elephant. She keeps him entertained and well hydrated, but when errant feathers on her boa tickle the elephant's nose, they prompt the dreaded sneeze and the girl ends up in bed with sniffles. Kids will giggle at the funny predicament and creative pairing of text and art (the shadow puppet spread is a hoot); adults will enjoy reading and re-reading Susanna Leonard Hill's bouncy text. Every pediatrician's office should stock a copy!
Oh my goodness! My grandson is walking around checking all his stuffed animals making sure that they don't have the sniffles! But if they do, he now knows what to do. Susanna Hill and illustrator Daniel Wiseman give little ones a sweet (and hilarious) lesson in empathy and caring for others. Ms. Hill takes something so ordinary and turns it into an extraordinary experience for little ones that will keep them laughing and caring at the same time. This is a book that children will want to hear and see over and over again.
This is a charming little board book. The story begins with the humorous fact that you happen to have an elephant, and your elephant has the sniffles. The book proceeds to give you advice on how to care for your beloved sick pachyderm. The fact that you don't want your elephant to start sneezing is stressed. This, of course, hints at the inevitable event. When Your Elephant Has the Sniffles appears to be part of a fun new series by Susanna Leonard Hill. I look forward to reading these delightful board books to my grandkids.
This humorous book is fantastic for anyone who has ever had the sniffles. The illustrations enhance the already hilarious text to make the perfect read-a-loud. Filled with great suggestions for how to keep your elephant in bed and how to avoid elephant sneezes, this book shows what someone can do to take care of a sick loved one. I adore how the little girl does everything she can to help her elephant get better. Trying to avoid an elephant sneeze is tantamount--will she succeed? The lively words make this one that you'll want to read and re-read!
Susanna Leonard Hill has done it again . . . an adorable book that kids and adults alike will enjoy reading over and over. "Uh-oh. Does your elephant have the sniffles?" So begins a little girl's endeavors to comfort her sniffling elephant and prevent a giant sneeze. With vibrant illustrations by Daniel Wiseman, and a cute twist ending, this story will bring a grin to your face! Just have some tissues nearby!
I liked this book a lot and recommend it for little children. Kids will relate with what all the things the main character does when her beloved elephant has the sniffles and the unexpected ending will touch their hearts.
The colorful drawings are mesmerizing. I couldn't stop looking for all the toys on the pages.
I can't wait to share this book with my little nephew! This book is up his alley.
When it comes to elephants, sniffles can be a problem, but a sneeze would be an even bigger, more difficult problem. Thank goodness Susanna Leonard Hill and David Wiseman gave this elephant a resourceful little girl to get him to bed and entertain him with games and gadgets and toys and treats while he’s recovering. But is it enough to stop the dreaded sneeze?
Loved this cute story about dealing with the sniffles. It's funny, and the pictures are perfect, adding their own humorous extras. And as a bonus, this book is a great example of story structure. Even though it's a board book, it could definitely be read to older kids as a quick and humorous example of what is required in a good story. Looking forward to more from Ms. Hill!
Cute book for the younger set. Shows how to take care of your elephant when he has the sniffles. Something to cuddle, playing fun games, tucking him into bed are all important. But, don't let him sneeze on you! Text and illustrations are simple and fun and meant for many readings.
I received a complimentary copy from the author for my honest opinion. All thoughts are my own.
If your elephant has the sniffles, you must do whatever it takes to avoid his trunk’s powerful sneeze. How do you accomplish this? Comfort and care for your elephant. Susanna Leonard Hill’s, When Your Elephant Has the Sniffles, is a clever and humorous book, which, at its heart, is about nurturing a friend. It is perfect for a cozy read with a little one who is a bit under the weather.
Such a cute board book! The illustrations are lively and the story is so cute. It even has a surprise at the end. Adorable! This is a "read to me again" book!
I don't know what I enjoyed more- the pictures or the story! This book tells you how to help your elephant to feel better when it has the sniffles...and warns you not to let it sneeze. I think small children will enjoy this book.
Hill, Susanna Leonard When Your Elephant has the Sniffles Illustrated by Daniel Wiseman BOARD BOOK Little Simon, 2017. $7.99 Content: G.
A little girl tries to help her elephant who is getting sick. She puts him in bed, brings him liquids and plays with him so he won’t get bored. But as she is trying to entertain her elephant she accidentally tickles his nose and he sneezes, giving her the germs so they are both sick.
This book helps little kids to know what to do when they are getting sick. The illustrations are adorable and colorful and the characters facial expressions are cute.
When your elephant has the sniffles has quickly became one of my 3 year old daughters favourite books and since receiving this book after being lucky enough to have won it we have read it together every day at least twice. It is such a fun read and the illustrations are amazing! So thank you Susanna for this lovely book and I will be keeping my eyes open for more of your books.
The last thing anyone wants is an elephant with a head cold and curing one is a HUGE task. When Your Elephant Has the Sniffles is a cute book about a young girl tending to her pachyderm patient. She tries everything she can to make her elephant feel better and prevent it from sneezing. From a proper diet to plenty of bed rest, this book was a delight to read. Daniel Wiseman's illustrations blended well with the theme and added some humorous touches to the already entertaining story.
The title immediately sets the fun tone of this adorable board book. Most kids want a pet and want to take the best care of them that they can. With this book, the author lets kids imagine if they had an elephant as a pet and this pet needs some extra TLC or watch out for that elephant sneeze! This book goes well with Susanna's When Your Lion Needs a Bath book (the lion even makes an appearance in this book--fun touch!). I think parents and kids will have fun rereading this book and adding sound effects as well as thinking up their own ideas of what to do when your elephant has the sniffles.
This cute book teaches kids about the signs of a cold and the potential remedies for one by depicting them in an active adult role caring for their pet elephant.
When Your ELEPHANT Has the SNIFFLES, written by Susanna Leonard Hill and illustrated by Daniel Wiseman is the second delightful story just right for little ‘uns in the new series of When Your … books.
As with When Your LION Needs a Bath, the first thing you’ll notice about this board book is the adorable illustrations. On the front cover is a miserable-looking elephant with flushed cheeks and lots of tissues. He obviously is not well. Oh dear.
From the beginning of the story you know this little elephant needs some loving care. He is sniffling and has a fever, and the reader is informed that “you don’t want your elephant to start sneezing!”
The little girl in the story sets out to care for her elephant. She removes anything that will make him sneeze. The illustrator, Daniel Wiseman, came up with a funny idea for this visual. She tucks her elephant into bed and makes sure he has all he needs. The clever touch you will notice as you read this book is his favourite stuffed toy is … the lion from the first book!
The real challenge begins when Elephant becomes bored as a patient but who is not yet well enough to get out of bed. The little girl is reminded to not make him sneeze as she tries to entertain him with props she chooses. But what if it happens anyway? You find out on the very last page. It’s a cute ending – an awwww moment – that will make you smile with Elephant.
This story, as with the first one, is not written in little words, or only three or four per page. It is written to be read to little ones. The uncomplicated, muted – with occasional splashes of bold colour – illustrations are well-suited to calm the child who is sick with the sniffles. When Your Elephant Has the Sniffles has definite child appeal so the child can fully appreciate what is being told. It will be fun for beginning readers to figure out the bigger words through remembering the story while feeling accomplished with the easier words. This story is for everyone’s reading pleasure.
Here is some sage advice from an unnamed narrator for when your elephant has the sniffles: do whatever you can to try to prevent him from sneezing. You can put your elephant to bed, but be sure to hide anything in the room that may cause him to sneeze. If he gets bored being in bed, do whatever you can to keep in there and resting. If your elephant sneezes, you just might end up with the sniffles, too. This charming book is sure to make kids laugh as the little girl in it tries so hard to take care of her elephant - because sometimes a person with a bad cold can feel just like an elephant in the room. Wiseman’s whimsical illustrations add much to the humor. Pair this book with When Your Lion Needs a Bath.
This board book describes how to take care of an elephant who has a cold.
Using the second person, the story shows a young girl taking care of her sick pet elephant. It prescribes the standard approach to mild illness: fluids and rest. The story takes the comic approach by featuring an elephant as the patient.
Children will both delight in the humor of an elephant sneezing and relate to the experience of having a cold.
This is a good book to share with young toddlers about regular sicknesses like colds, when people have the sniffles. It shows a young girl taking care of her sick elephant (who is not too sick, because he wants to play with his toy trucks and cards), and then shows how in the end, it's easy to catch sicknesses from your elephant / other people. Useful even to discuss how sicknesses propagate during pandemics, in a child-friendly way.
This book has cute illustrations, but the story was alright. The story is how to take care of your elephant if it has the sniffles (not literally). The illustrations show a little girl trying to take care of the sick elephant. I chuckled when I saw her sweep the kitty so the cat doesn't make the elephant sneeze.
I like the absurdity of the premise, and following the little protagonist through her care routine for her elephant. I like being in on the suspense of "you do not, under any circumstances, want your elephant sneezing." I was hoping for a pay-off of sneezing glitter or something instead of the little girl getting sick, but this ending does teach a valuable lesson.
This was adorable! It's a bit of common-sense advice for dealing with *anybody* who has the sniffles (lots of rest, lots of fluids, and try to avoid sharing germs!) but the way it's presented makes it more fun and memorable.
I always love finding a board book that has big, bold illustrations to engage the youngest readers, as well as interesting text that will engage the slightly older crowd. This book has both. And it is funny throughout, giving lots of opportunities to engage with the story.
