Who'd guess that a little board book about lines and curves could evolve into a complex meditation on forms in the wider world and yet remain perfect for our littles?

I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads giveaway program in the hopes that I would leave an honest review.

This book just arrived today, but being a board book, it was a super fast read for me, which is good because sometimes I have a short attention span (that's a lie, kind of). I actually have no direct personal use for this book because my children are 6 and 8 and this is far too simple for either of them to read. But that simplicity makes it perfect for the babies and toddlers it's geared towards. The illustrations are colorful and fun, largely sticking to geometric shapes (triangle trees, square houses, etc.) providing a plethora of shapes to point out to little ones on almost every page.

Now I just have to figure out which one of my three nieces and nephews under the age of 1 is my favorite to gift this beautiful board book to.

Sarvinder has come up with another brilliantly sparse book (see: Blue Sky White Stars) that says so much with so few words. Lovely introduction of shapes to infants and toddlers. Great lines to trace with little fingers to discover shapes, a pre-curser to identifying letters. Fabulous!

From my niece’s recent library trip. The illustrations are SO cute. I wanted the text to be better, though. It starts off really simple and can be a great way to teach kids how lines make shapes, but by the end it started being about towns and the universe and it didn’t make sense with the rest of the book. To focus just on lines and shapes would have been better.

Board books could be viewed as merely simple books for babies. But they are quite complex and often contain either or both STEM and STEAM aspects, helping young readers decipher the world around them. This book is about "building bigger, while simultaneously zooming out smaller."
Starting with a line, the book examines other shapes, connecting them to a child's life and to the universe. Opening the discussion of the diversity of lines (or "what is a line"?), by including a circle, Sarvinder not only sets the stage for a discussion about math and geometric shapes, but discussing the differences and diversity in life. Sarvinder and Melinda have created both a beautifully simple and amazingly complex book.

Lovely, layered, thoughtful, and thought-provoking. Don't let the board-book format fool you - so far, the concepts here have intrigued the 6, 9, 15, and 19-year-olds in the house! Highly recommended for all ages.

Naberhaus, Sarvinder Lines, illustrated by Melinda Beck. BOARD BOOK. Little Simon, 2017. $10. 9781481490740

One line can become several lines and make squares and buildings. One line can become several lines and make circles which can become wheels and donuts. Lines, circles, and squares make up the entire world, and even the entire universe.

A well-written simple shape story is made “out of this world” by the excellent illustrations that show that shapes make everything, even the stars.

There's a lot that I love about this. It encourages seeing lines on their own, as parts of other shapes, and in other things in the world. It encourages seeing circles and seeing squares all around us, looking for how things are made up of shapes.

When it expands from a square, though, the squares in the town pages have lots of non-square rectangles. That distinction isn't made at all; it's all presented as square.

This is a fun conceptual book for small children. I takes a simple shape, grows it into a larger idea until it is much larger. For example, it shows a how a line can be a road, and that a city is full of roads. Kids can find lines in their everyday life next.

As a parent, I like the book. For the child however, I think it may be a little conceptually difficult for kids who need board books.

would be great for storytime to do with a theme of shapes, lines, circles, squares, very educational, can do the 3 e's with this one. say something like - now go find shapes around you when you go home. and trace the shapes, learning to write too. board book is small though. can make it into a flannel or a write it out as you go??? trace story? good for all ages... maybe not baby?

Interesting idea for a board book. I like seeing more nonfiction in board books and while it has some interesting concepts to explore for very young readers, some will go beyond what they are able to understand.

This is a great little board book. It helps a young child view the world with simple lines, squares, and circles. And then expands out to include towns, the Earth, and the universe. A very enjoyable read.

A board book about lines that turn into squares and circles. Very nicely presented for the youngest pre-reader learning about lines and shapes in their world.
