Oops
I mistakenly got this book thinking it was by Michael Connelly of Harry Bosch fame. I thought that, perhaps he was exploring a new genre. It didn't take long to realize the error of my ways. The premise of this book is interesting, the story was interesting but the telling of the story is this book's downfall. I wouldn't say it's poorly written but it is not well written either. To me, it read like a high school creative writing first draft. There is no emotion, no character development, and a lot of repetition. If I were to use one word to describe the writing, I would pick cheesy. Before downloading my next Michael Connelly book, I'll make doubly sure which Michael Connelly is the author.

Read 2 pages and knew I was fooled. Shame on me. I would suggest if anyone is interested in what life in the USA would be like after an EMP they should read One Second After by Forstchen.

An eye opening Fact/Fiction account of how the USA could become the SRA (SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF AMERICA), comparatives of life and freedoms of history versus the NEW NORMAL. While the book IS MAINLY FICTION so many current factors play into the slow change to total government dependence and CONTROL, amazingly coming first - the American Vet- hundreds of thousands who fought FOR their country COULD FIGHT AGAINST IT, armed, trained and loyal.
Next control the media, then education, then offer government programs with a giveaway and many TAKEAWAY!

September 3, 2020Pure crap. Grabbed it thinking it was a new novel by one of my favorite authors, the one who wrote the Bosch series. Just a page in and both the subject matter and lack of writing skill showed it was clearly not him. Two pages in and it was obviously a stupid propaganda leaflet. Far right fear mongering at it's worst. I was at first really disappointed that my man would write such garbage but a brief search discovered the truth. Whew!

I have read many books by Michael Connely and thought they were great.
This book, while the premises were interesting,
but the book was totally fractured and difficult to read.
It would make for a good movie and is very much on target with the USA political mess of today.

My mistake; I thought this was Michael Connelly of Harry Bosch fame, and I’m extremely happy I did not spend money on the book. It’s poorly conceived, poorly written, and poorly edited, but if you can wade through it (difficult), it provides insight into the far right militant mindset. Progressives are uniformly mindless, greedy politicians making deals with American enemies to deprive the populace of guns. The “federal” forces are cowards, untrained, unimaginative, and trying to get Syrians, Iranians, Mexicans, and gang members (rapists, murderers, and cowards) to help them subdue the “true patriots”. As expected, the true patriots are almost all lacking higher education, but are brilliant strategists, militarily trained, experts in weapons and tactics, and fit (probably good looking as well) to boot. In depth descriptions are given for the true patriots while progressives are painted with a large brush of greed and cowardice and few are identified specifically. As the reviews will show, there is a segment of our populace that believes these fantasies. Fortunately it’s a small contingent. If you want to know how they think, read this. Otherwise it’s a waste of time.

There is a way to save this non-novel.
As it stands, though, it is merely a long narrative, as if someone were merely outlining a story.
There is little descriptive action, very little dialogue, just that loooong narrative.
From what I see, much of the rude and even hate-filled criticism is based on the right-wing orientation of the story, and I'm guessing all of the love-filled reviews are also.
Never mind: there is, or could be, an actual book, an actual interesting piece of fictive writing -- but NOT in this form.
I wonder if the author -- who probably should identify himself better, say with a middle initial -- reads any of the reviews here. He should.
Otherwise he's wasted his time, plus that of any readers who, as I almost did, get fooled by his name. Who will also get angry, as obviously some have -- we can tell by the tone of their reviews.
If Mr. Connelly sees this, I invite you to contact me and we'll convert this into a good novel.

THIS AUTHOR IS NOT MICHAEL CONNELLY THE MYSTERY WRITER OF HARRY BOSCH AND LINCOLN LAWYER BOOKS!!!!
I made that mistake so you don't have to.
I would have given this zero stars if I could, after managing to wade through about 10 chapters. This is a Trumpian fantasy about a United States brought low by a North Korean EMP attack (?) and now in the grips of evil " socialists" but being reclaimed by freedom fighters. It's an updated version of the Turner Diaries that doesn't bother to hide it's racism towards Arabs and Muslims. Goes without saying the plot is stupid, the characters wooden and unbelievable. Do have to say though, that the book lives up to it's title.

The ebook form I got this in from my library was obviously not proof read or edited, which is why I gave it only 4 stars.
It's still a good, cautionary, story, in which the author peeks into the possible future of our country if we don't stand together, and be vigilant of the right and freedoms we enjoy, and why we have those rights and freedoms.
