Mele Keahi, Hawaiian-born and a genuine ghost-seer, has a problem. She came to the California coast for the peace and comfort of family, but suddenly she seems to be a magnet for murders. They’re dropping like flies all around her, and she's the only one who can solve them - with the help of some ancestral spirits, and, of course, a trusty black cat. But even with her ghosts, her wits, and her family at her side, she wonders - could the next new ghost in town be her?
A GHOST FOR CHRISTMAS—Mele is home for the holidays, only to find a dead man in the front yard. Could her beloved Aunt Bebe be the murderer?
GHOST ON DUTY—Mele is nervous to meet with the mean old rich man in the mansion, but it’s even more chilling to find him dead! Does his silver cat carry a clue to the killer?
A GHOST IN TIME—This time Aunt Bebe is really in trouble-it seems obvious that she is the one who ran down the victim. But who really engineered the crime?
Rereading #1, then moving on to 2 & 3. Definitely helpful to read in order, IMHO. A Ghost for Christmas (Destiny Bay Cozy #1) Mele Keahi heads to her aunt's place in Destiny Bay for a quick getaway to clear her head, but I get the impression she's staying by the end, esp when her aunt gets her a job (albeit a temporary one)! There's a bit of paranormal activity in her aunt's house, what with Aunty Jane (a ghost, not her actual aunt) in the backyard, Dante (a ghost that seems to have followed Mele from childhood), and also the cat...I mean, the cat is real but there's something going on with that cat! When Mele first arrives, she finds a dead body in her aunt's front yard and her Aunt Bebe gardening up a storm in the backyard, grooving to some loud music, oblivious to the body on her stoop. Of course, her aunt lands on the suspect list, as does the man's wife, who is the Aunt Bebe's friend. With a little help from some townies, Mele pokes around and tries to take the suspicions of the local police detective off her aunt but finds herself in danger...and possibly falling for the detective as well. Just enough character development to make a reader want to continue the story. I enjoyed the HI theme. Note: awhile means "for a while," so there's no need to say for awhile, as it's redundant Ghost On Duty (Destiny Bay Cozy, #2) There's turmoil amongst the people of Destiny Bay, as they come to vote on whether to continue holding the Christmas Pageant or not, defying their contracts with the property owners from whom they have long-term leases. And when Mele finds an opponent dead, she's a suspect, of course, but she also takes in his cat and parrot. Don't see much of Bebe in this one, but Aunty Jane is quite helpful...and forward, and Dante is right by Mele's side when she needs him most, which is pretty evident by the title. A Ghost in Time (Destiny Bay Cozy, #3) Mele's aunt is embroiled in a murder investigation again, where she's the prime suspect. There was animosity between Aunt Bebe and Starflower Moon, another local flower grower. Starflower Moon eggs Aunt Bebe on, so when Aunt Bebe hits Starflower on her way to Starflower's house after an irate phone call between the two, naturally the police suspect murder rather than accident. Mele disagrees, and fortunately she has Dante and Aunty Jane on her side. In fact, Aunty Jane starts teaching Mele some Hawaiian magic in this, #3 of the series.
This boxed set contains three mystery stories featuring Mele Keahi. Following the breakup of a relationship and the loss of her job, Mele visits her Aunt Bebe in Destiny Bay. Bebe is a commercial flower grower.
When Mele arrives at her aunt's house, she trips over a body on the walkway. So begins her amateur sleuthing efforts. All of the characters are well done, and the mysteries are well-written and interesting as are the two ghosts.
I did read all 3 books. The MC is likeable and the premise of each is fine. However, the endings feel rushed. The books read like they're maybe 2/3 to 3/4 of the way through but then they have a quick ending chapter instead of building naturally. Because of the nature of the endings and this abbreviation of the later phases of investigation, the mysteries aren't really satisfying to me. Also the third one has a slow start.
I really enjoyed this collection of books. Melee is a character with a lot of contradictions. On one hand she sees & talks to ghosts and on the other she's afraid of anything new or different. Can't wait to see where her relationship with Roy goes.
I really enjoyed this book, only had the first book, but would love to read the rest. The characters were interesting and the story really held my attention. Can't wait to find the rest of the series.
