2.5 stars rounded down because I didn’t feel the connection. The MOC felt tacky and if heroine held her ground hero would actually have no way of proving he cared because he was being an iceberg. I’m with heroine in this one. Who the hell takes it lightly if their partner’s photo shows up in a matchmaking site? And the partner only gives a half hearted attempt of explaining its not what she thinks? He didn’t deny he was planning on dating OW and he admitted that he was too proud to try to genuinely explain anything and he didn’t fight for her at all. Between her and his pride, she is a second choice. And I don’t see why anyone needs to accept that position. I’d like to know how rationally he’d have behaved if tables were turned? Oh let me see, tables WERE turned and he was also quite happy to believe the worst of her. As I said earlier HE. DIDN’T. FIGHT. FOR. HER. She knew him for six weeks, and his photo pops up in quite a prestigious matchmaking side. I’m sorry she didn’t realise she was his soulmate. I’m willing to believe he was celibate. Nothing explicitly confirmed, but he did admit he barely dated and his head was too wrapped up with the thought of the heroine. But the MOC was too calculating for me, and it seemed cold and chilling, not endearing and heroine didn’t feel loved for a reason, I didn’t feel the love either.

I received a free copy of this book from the author through Tasty Book Tours and voluntarily reviewed it.
The Magnate's Marriage Merger was a solid read, well written and enjoyable. Unfortunately the romance didn't fully work for me so I wasn't able to fully enjoy the book. But let me start with what I did enjoy. There's an awesome sense of continuity in this book, it works well as a sequel as we see the characters of book 1 again and even some plot lines/ topics are continued from there. I really enjoyed book 1 and I liked how the author continued some of those plot lines here. While this book focuses on another brother, we see what has become of the fist couple and there's a twist concerning the whole family that gets dropped into this book. I am curious if we'll see more of that in book 3 as well.
Like I am used to from Joanne Rock's books, this book was really well written. I easily got into the story and mostly enjoyed reading it. Things were described well and the beach setting and other locations they visited seemed lovely. I also liked how she makes her characters feel real, they have their own personality, work and hobbies and such that make them feel real and makes them interesting to read about. I liked how the characters both worked in architecture and construction in this book, it was an interesting touch.
Now the part that didn't quite work for em was the romance. At the start there's a scene where the male main character basically forces or even threatens the female main character into marrying him. And I just couldn't get over that. Yes I knew he cared about her and did it for all the right reasons and justified in that way, but it just felt wrong to me. The romance is a bit of a second chance romance and a fake marriage romance in one. And sadly I just didn't feel their romance.
I did like the hints of how their first romance has played out as that felt real and emotional, although I thought the reasons they broke up was a classical case of miscommunication and I didn't quite care for that or how they fell into the same pattern now. They judged each other harshly at times without actually talking things through. I did like how they eventually did realize they were in the wrong too and realized the feelings they had for each.
The fake marriage thing rubbed me wrong especially how it came to be. There was a sentence in the book that described it well with how the romance was a shadows or what a real marriage should be. And I guess I just wanted a real marriage or something real and passionate instead of her being forced into a marriage and then suddenly changing her mind about him and jumping into bed with him. Or maybe even a fake romance were they both agreed to the marriage and which benefits both sakes. Instead of how this only benefited both as else he would reveal her secret and she would get sued.
To summarize: this was a solid and enjoyable read, but also had a few things that didn't work for me. I like Joanne Rock's writing style and this book was as well written as I've come to expect from her books. The pace flowed well and the writing style was great. I also liked the continuity, with how we saw the couple form book 1 again and some plot lines/ topics from book 1 played a role here as well. I also liked how the characters had these bits of personality, hobbies and work that made them feel real. Sadly I didn't feel the romance in this book. Ian basically forces Lydia into a marriage and that didn't set well with me. And I never fully got over that part and was unable to get swept up in their romance. I did like how eventually they realized their own flaws and mistakes as well and were able to overcome that. The ending was sweet and I am looking forward to book 3.
The Magnate’s Marriage Merger by Joanne Rock is the second story in her McNeill Magnates series, and this one features a second chance romance for a couple whose original whirlwind romance ended as abruptly as it began. Lydia Whitney had fallen swiftly for Ian McNeill while they were both working on a hotel development in Rangiroa, but when she discovered his profile on a dating website she accused him of duplicity and broke things off, returning home before he could explain. In fact, it was his grandfather’s doing, not Ian’s but Lydia gets her revenge.
As celebrity matchmaker ‘Mallory West’ she sends one inappropriate woman after another his way, with Ian none the wiser about who is setting him up. Things come to a head though when his brother Cameron gets caught in a scandal with Ballerina Sofia Koslov, in part due to Lydia’s actions. Investigating ‘Mallory’, Ian discovers she’s none other than the woman who was on her way to stealing his heart. Discovering where her next design assignment will be, he calls in a favor and gets on the resort team so he can confront Lydia. He offers her an exchange – he’ll protect her from a lawsuit threatened by Sofia’s father if she’ll agree to marry him for one year so that he can retain control of McNeill Resorts as defined in his still living grandfather’s updated will. Lydia reluctantly agrees but insists it should be a marriage in name only. She’s already had her heart broken by Ian once, and she’s not willing to risk it a second time. But once Ian has her in his arms again, he’s not willing to let her go. Can he convince her that this time around is for keeps?
i’m back! i am going to slowly become your local authority on cheesy romance reads. next time i visit my mom and she asks what i’ve been reading i’m gonna be like, “uhhhhh. i haven’t. don’t worry about it. ugh fine i’ve been reading SEXY books,” bc when i was younger she would inhale historical romance, like bodice rippers, and i KNOW there’s sexy time in those.
anyways. tw (in the book, not in my review) for miscarriage, some body image/ED talk.
as i learned before starting this one, there’s a difference between the different harlequin subgenres, here specifically harlequin blaze and harlequin desire. zero control was a blaze, this one is a desire.
blaze is ultimate sexy time, in-depth descriptions. real spicy stuff. desire is some sex, but not immediate, and more of a focus on romance and plot.
the story here was actually kind of nice. Lydia, our main woman, is a matchmaker and interior designer, using 100% of her profits from her matchmaking business to pledge to a single mother’s charity, whose group supported her during a time she thought she’d end up a single mother. i liked her story. i’d honestly read more about her if that were presented to me. and i’d take her romance with Ian along with it.
i was looking for a shorter read, so i guess i can’t really complain that the story was short. but darn it, i wanted it to be longer. 3 solid stars.
Lydia and Ian had a love written in the stars. Until real life got in the way. Now fate has given them a second chance. Will the heartache be worth the wait? The McNeill men exude power, presence and personality, but when faced with matters of the heart, they have a hard time facing reality. Ian loves to be in control. Lydia is the one woman, he never expected, could not forget and had no control over. Lydia offered her heart to the one man who managed to break her spirit. Now he's back and ready to expose her secrets and desires. Amid the heartache, blackmail, secrets and betrayals lie misunderstandings, pride and an everlasting love. Will these two shattered hearts be able to piece their love together again? Ms. Rock has a way with words. The Magnate's Marriage Merger appeals to the emotional, hormonal and dream lover in every romantic soul.
When Ian McNeill learns that his ex Lydia Whitney is the mysterious matchmaker known as Mallory West; a woman that caused problems for his family, he's determined to confront her to discover why she did what she did. However, seeing her again brings old feelings to the surface, and there's no way he's going to let her get away a second time. Blackmailing her seems wrong, but if it gets them what they both want, why shouldn't they get married, even if the arrangement is only temporary? But the more time they spend together, Lydia finds herself falling in love with Ian all over again. Can he convince her they deserve a second shot at happy ever after, or will a simple misunderstanding tear them apart?
In this second book of Ms. Rock's wonderful McNeill Magnates series, Ms. Rock combines the marriage of convenience and second chance romance tropes perfectly, creating a story that illustrated how right Ian and Lydia are for each other and that they're a couple meant to be, no matter what obstacles they have to face. Such as Lydia being able to trust that Ian won't reveal her match-making identity to anyone who wants to ruin her for the drama she caused for Ian's brother and the woman he set her up with; whether both the hero and heroine can get over what caused their separation in the past; the surprise someone of Ian's family reveals that shocks the brothers; and what causes Lydia to believe Ian has betrayed her again.
Lydia is a wonderful heroine and I felt sorry for her with what she reveals to the hero about what happened to her after their separation. It was a time when she needed Ian, and yet, after how they left things between them in the past, there was no way she could turn to him. However, she overcame her grief with the help of a wonderful cause that she would do anything to give back to, which is proven by her having two careers and what she does with her second income. Seriously, she's the most selfless person, which is surprising with an attention-seeking mother like hers.
While Ian, he and his brothers are fantastic heroes and I loved the tight bond they have. They go through a lot with first the way they hear the news about Ian's marriage and then the surprise someone of their family reveals. However, Ian also has his own obstacles to overcome such as having to win back Lydia's trust; and him having to try his hardest not to seduce the heroine, as she wants to keep their relationship strictly platonic. Can he show Lydia that his feelings for her haven't diminished? Will he win her over by proving he can keep their relationship how she wants it until she's ready?
Overall, Ms. Rock has penned a really good read in this book where there's plenty of chemistry between the main characters that show these two still love each other, despite the misunderstanding that caused Lydia to leave Ian in the past. The way this story ended was heartwarming, as Ian isn't about to let Lydia get away a second time, no matter how upset she is with him. But what I liked most about the ending is that Ian isn't afraid to show Lydia how much he loves her by making a public declaration. I would recommend The Magnate's Marriage Merger by Joanne Rock, if you enjoy the marriage of convenience trope, the second chance romance trope or books by authors Cat Schield, Katherine Garbera or Kat Cantrell.
This is the second book in the McNeill's series of sexy contemporary romances. I enjoyed the first book which included Quinn and Sofia, so I was excited about Ian's book. I wanted to LOVE it, but I only sort of liked it. I did a lot of skipping around because most of the bits between the dialogue wasn't interesting enough to keep me engaged. I just wanted to know if Lydia would actually fall for Ian's charm or if she'd tit-up and tell him to shove it where the sun don't shine. Ian and Lydia had a torrid affair and because of some misunderstanding, they parted ways. Now, Ian is back and is looking for "sensual revenge" against Lydia because Lydia went all high school bully on Ian by trying to get her payback in a juvenile way (won't go into it so you can read all the eye-rolling stupidity yourself).
I don't like Lydia's childishness in her attempt to hurt Ian. In the end, she reaped the consequences by getting herself in trouble and into the scandal sheets. Ian had every right to be angry at her, but instead of suing her he wants to use her to fulfill his grandfather's will and get his part of the family business. But (surprise, surprise) he also wants her because he's had a raging hard on for her since she left.
Lydia is a smart (or so we're told) woman who only wants to help single mom's so she's hesitant to turn down Ian's marriage proposal. Hell, he's offering protection, money, his rock hard body--what's not to like? Well, how about how the man threatened to turn you over to a ruthless Russian billionaire unless you complied? How about how he used your own philanthropy against you? The man was a walking a-hole, but she just couldn't say "no."
Despite all the issues I had with the main characters, the plot, and the trope, I hate to admit that I liked the book enough to lose several hours of sleep reading it. Will I ever read it again? No. But at least now I can read Cameron's book with a little fore-knowledge of what the hell is going on in this family of convenience marriages, side pieces, and hunky resort magnates.
I really enjoy Joanne Rock's writing style and her voice as she tells the story. The tales flow fluently off the pages, there are emotional tension and the jitters of falling in love, the passion is scorching hot, and even the billionaires and magnates have human faults and weaknesses they have to overcome to be able to find their happily forever after. Ian McNeill, the peacemaker of the brothers, found out that the matchmaker causing trouble to their family is his former lover, a hot fling that ended too soon with hurt and heartbreak. I liked Ian, he was controlling yet there was gentleness in him. He was fair, protective, and able to admit his mistakes. He had charm and charisma that draw me in and Lydia Whitney, as well, obviously. Lydia was headstrong and had learned the hard way that she had to survive on her own and watch her back constantly. She tends to see more of the problems than solutions, she is cautious to trust or rely on others. To solve their current problems with family, inheritance, and press, they make a twelve-month pack for marriage. He will protect her from a lawsuit, lets her use his name for her business enhancement, and to use his contacts to make money for her charity. He will fulfill his grandfather's will's conditions by being married for a year. But the old desires and feelings emerge and soon nothing feels or seems fake or pretend. They have the allure, the attraction, and interest, there are passion and deep feelings taking root, but there is also a failure to communicate, to have faith in them as a couple, and confidence in the future of their relationship. Delightfully angsty with stormy feelings and lots of lust and adoration. The physical attraction is backed with devotion and warmth, the old hurts are healed with compassion and affection. A fun and touching read at the same time! ~ Four Spoons
Oh, my. How do I just love a second chance/marriage of convenience romance? Let me tell you the ways.
1. Lydia and Ian at a typical one night stand that left a very lasting impression on Ian. Not so much on Lydia.
2. Lydia had more to deal with after the one night. Hence her connection to the Mom's Connection. And I'll leave it at that.
3. The secret matchmaker plot thread is perfection. Everything about it.
Ian and Lydia make a great team right from the start. The chemistry is there but the trust isn't. It takes a while for these two to really start trusting each other. Even after they get married, Lydia still didn't want to have anything sexual to do with him. Two kisses? Right...not in Ian's world.
I will have to say that Ian is my favorite of the brothers. He is honest with Lydia from the start even when he figured her out. He fell for her hard and never let that one night go. *swoon* Lydia was a harder egg to crack. She had trust issues and I could see why. But, she could have called him to let him know what happened.
The ending where all the brothers are called in by their father, Liam is such a great scene. I hate Liam but he deserved what he got from Cam. LOL! Malcolm...I'm still not so sure about him. Grandfather or not, he's a bit conniving for me.
Overall, you MUST buy this book. It's sweet, sexy, emotional, plus it's Ian's book. *major swoon*
A dashing business man gets a second chance with the one that got away! The characters are easy to like, and we enjoy seeing them interact with the rest of the family that we got to know in the previous book. A fast-paced, satisfying read! Looking forward to more in the series … and especially delving into the secrets that were uncovered!
Resort developer Ian McNeill got more than he bargained for when he hired his PI buddy to track down the matchmaker that caused a huge scandal for his brothers a couple of months ago. Never in his wildest dreams did he think he’d come to him with a picture of his ex!
Lydia Whitney admits that the secretive matchmaking originally started as a little bit of payback on Ian, but she seriously never meant for the big snafu to happen with his brothers! A big misunderstanding that she was a bit too sensitive about led to them breaking up a year ago after a short-lived relationship … and seeing each other brings back those same old feelings. Ian proposes she help him out of a situation by marrying him for a year … and she reluctantly agrees. When all is said and done, will either of them be walking away?
The Magnate's Marriage Merger by Joanne Rock is a novel full of passion. Talk about desire! This read is hot as fire. Both main characters will be playing with something they can't resist nor deny. That is what makes this a compelling tale.
Inside The Magnate's Merger, I met a tycoon, Ian McNeill. He is wanting to know who is messing with his family and why. Then, he finds the answer. Someone he knew from his past. But her motive is what he's really searching for...only he doesn't realize how dangerous the game he's playing will be. Hearts will be taken.
Then, there's the secretive matchmaker, Lydia Whitney. Her one mistake leads her past flame to chasing her. This time, he's hotter and more demanding than she knew. He offers her a convenient marriage proposal...will she accept it?
Joanne Rock has once again brought another fabulous book to my hands. A heated romance packed full of tension. The future of the characters lies with their choices...the suspense is killing and the intrigue kept me turning the pages. Overall, I highly recommend The Magnate's Marriage Merger to all readers.
(I got this book from Harlequin. This, is my honest review.)

I cannot wait for the next installment of The McNeill Magnates... His Accidental Heir due July 2017! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this book via Tasty Book Tours for an honest blog tour review. Due to sexual situations, this book is recommended for readers 17 and older. Each of the book is a standalone novel that follow the McNeill brothers. Favorite Passage~ •“I wish you could trust me to make you happy for the next twelve months.”
I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, pain, secrets, and heartbreak.
If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first The Magnate's Mail-Order Bride (The McNeill Magnates #1)
This is Lydia and Ian’s story. Lydia and Ian have history so when he finds out she is behind the matchmaking in secret he is going after her. She is messing with his family and he is going to figure out why and take her down. After all she seduced him before it’s only fair to return the favor. He makes her follow his rules by making her agree to be his convenient wife. But the chemistry is still just as hot as before will it end up burning them both in the end? Why would Lydia have done something to his family? Will he ever find out the truth? Or are they both in for a hard and fast fall?
I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read.
Ian McNeill hires a private investigator to find a match maker who goes by the name Mallory West who caused a scandal in his family. The PI’s discovery shocks Ian. He knows this woman. She is no other than Lydia Whitney—his ex. Ian sets out to teach Lydia a lesson for the problems she has caused—except once he learns the truth, Ian will use Lydia to his advantage. He shocks her with a marriage proposal. As outrageous as Ian’s proposal may be, Lydia follows through with it. However, being Ian’s wife rekindles the fire that once burned between them. How will this maddening deception of a marriage pan out?
Final Verdict:
The Magnate’s Marriage Merger by Joanne Rock grasps your interest from the onset. It is a fast-paced and dramatic read—with enough conflict to keep you hooked until the end!
This is the 2nd book in The McNeill Magnates series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. To enjoy the series without spoilers, I always recommend reading them in order.
Ian had set out to find who nearly ruined his brother's public image. He find out who it was and it is a shocker! Only to turn around and want to keep her for himself.
Lydia has a hot and sexy past with the intimidating Ian. She also has a secret she has not yet shared with him. Is there any kind of future for them after such a rocky start?
I found this series to be very heated and compelling so far. These characters a rich and complex. I love the interaction and the sparks flying.

The Magnate’s Marriage Merger is the second in Joanne Rock’s fabulous McNeill Magnates series. The first book left us all wondering who Mallory West really was. In this installment we find out. Not surprisingly, she and Ian McNeill have a history. Reunion stories are so much fun. Admittedly, both Ian and Lydia let their emotions color their responses, but who hasn’t done that once or twice (or a million times!)? Watching them struggle to reconnect makes their reconciliation all that much sweeter. If you haven’t read the first book in this series you won’t miss anything by diving right in. Even more fun, SPOILER ALERT, Rock is giving us three more McNeill magnates so the series will continue past Cameron’s book in June.
Ian has been looking for the matchmaker that messed things up for his brothers but that ended happily with Quinn and Sofia. When he finds out it his ex he is stunned. he has not forgotten Lydia and their time together. He finds out what she is doing next and hunts her down and talks her into a year long marriage...as they go on their honeymoon they remember the heat between the two of them and they can't stop what is happening..when they return to New York for his grandfather, their father surprises them. Lydia finds than that maybe she isn't needed and decides to leave Quinn but he hunts her down and they vow their love to each other. A really good story
The matchmaker meets her match…in one very persistent tycoon! Secretive (matchmaker) to the rich and famous, Lydia Whitney prefers to stay behind the scenes as Mallory West. But after one mistake matching his brother, rich (resort developer) Ian McNeill is hot on her trail, and he's more attractive—and persistent—than ever before. Ian can't believe it when he figures out who's messing with his family: a woman who has deceived—and seduced—him before. What's her agenda? And why can't he resist her? He'll get the answers to all his questions, if Lydia agrees to his convenient marriage proposal. But once she's in his arms again, will he let her go?
Lydia has been hiding from the New York elite for the past year after her Matchmaker business took a hit. When Ian is determined to make the Matchmaker pay for what she did to his brother Cameron. Ian is surprised when the woman behind the infamous Matchmaker Mallory is actually the woman he can't forget and wants back. He decides to give her an offer she can't refuse. This is a sweet story about second chances and fighting for that one in a lifetime love.
I won this book. Book 2 of this series. Ian discovers his flame Lydia is behind the matchmaker mess that ended with Quinn and Sofia finding each other. With feelings still running under both their skins Ian makes a deal to keep Lydia's identity secret to prevent her being sued if she marries him to help him satisfy his grandfather's will. But can the marriage survive even the 12 months necessary???
The second book in one of the best series from a newly discovered favourite author. Well structured and intriguing plot, lovely snd captivating characters and a thrilling prose. I loved it and would recommend it to everyone. The book was a great 4.3 stars read
Joanne's books are always so exciting and just so good. There is sometimes a little bit of a hint of sex but as i say it is a tease when she does include it. I thought this was a grand slam for her .
Light reading again. 2nd book of McNeill series.. But.. Uhmm.. Dunno, I couldn't enjoy the story like the previous book. Maybe due to the couple's past history? Just.. Lack of interesting conflicts maybe?
A secret matchmaker makes a mistake that puts her in hot water. Lydia and Ian will keep you turning the pages until the very end. Now I must find book 3 of this trilogy. Great book.
Quinn McNeill had asked brother Ian to look up a matchmaker who caused Quinn problems a few months before, Ian hired a private investigator, and he is stunned to see that the mystery matchmaker is his former lover Lydia Whitney. Lydia had broken up with Ian when she learned that he had a profile on a dating website, and at the time, she made a rash decision. It was Ian’s grandfather who had put it there: The McNeills’ grandfather insists the boys marry if they want their share of the family business. Ian has learned that Lydia, an interior designer, will be working in the company’s resort in South Beach, so Ian asks to handle business matters over there and get even for the mess with Quinn. However, Ian hadn’t counted on his attraction to Lydia not having dimmed; Lydia is also very much attracted to Ian, but she feels betrayed, and she’s had some serious issues in the meantime. Ian strongly suggests that it would be in Lydia’s best interests to agree to a marriage of convenience, as it would solve both their problems. Lydia doesn’t like the idea very much, but she can’t see other way to avoid a scandal.
THE MAGNATE’S MARRIAGE MERGER is a terrific take on the marriage of convenience in a contemporary setting, done just as brilliantly as the first book of the McNeill Magnates series, THE MAGNATE’S MAIL-ORDER BRIDE, whose subject is obvious. Ms. Rock’s eloquent prose had me living vicariously in exotic locales such as South Beach and Costa Rica, and in the world of the privileged few. The McNeills might be billionaires, but they don’t act as spoiled, entitled rich boys; they work for their money. The conflicts were entirely logical and believable, the air is cleared promptly, and there is no tiptoeing around the issues. Ian had been a bit of an enigma in the first book, he’s a quiet man, and we got to know him better. Lydia’s backstory was unusual and heartbreaking at times. Ian, as Quinn before, is a beautiful hero just the way I like them; not a cartoon alpha, but a real, reasonable man, who is willing to work for what and who matters.
There is quite a bit of tension, sexual and otherwise, but Ms. Rock never makes it unpleasant and at no time does the reader have to suspend her sense of disbelief. I also loved that in one instance, both characters are adult enough not to repeat an unfortunate mistake. Ian cares for Lydia, and it shows. It’s not all smooth sailing, but the rekindled romance is going relatively well, until the author Rock drops a major bombshell on us. And dear readers, this is called meticulously structuring one’s story and carefully planning one’s story arc, especially as when you look back, the signs were there in the previous book; Joanne Rock knew where she was going right from the start: no snags, and a stunning surprise. I know I’ve mentioned THE MAGNATE’S MAIL-ORDER BRIDE, the first book, a few times (and I consider it an absolute must-read), but still THE MAGNATE’S MARRIAGE MERGER can totally be read as a standalone. Joanne Rock has created an amazing series in the McNeill Magnates, giving tired old tropes fresh spins, and doing an incredible job. Am I impressed the second time around? You bet!
Ian and Lydia fell hard and fast for each other, but through a silly misunderstanding, it ended even faster, so now this is their second chance at romance. Though I didn't like how he blackmailed her, I think he makes up for it later. These two have a lot of trust issues through most of the book, and I feel like they've not quite worked it all out within this story, but they are on the right path. They sure are cute together, and keeping true to the steamy McNeill style. I like these guys, and I'm looking forward to Cameron's story!
The ARC of The Magnate's Marriage Merger by Joanne Rock was kindly provided to me by Tasty Book Tours for review. The opinions are my own.
"While the idea of a fake marriage might seem preposterous to some, it makes perfect sense for Ian and Lydia. It's a win-win situation, until you figure in their history — and that's where the fireworks begin! They have a magnetic connection (their spectacular honeymoon is a particular highlight) that will keep readers happily engaged and eagerly looking forward to the next McNeill Magnates love affair" (4 stars @ RT Book Reviews).
