I found this collection of beguiling short stories entertaining, interesting and sometimes disturbing (in a good way) The title story is close to the best with an apocalyptic concept used in an interesting and unique way, which I found ultimately quite beautifully haunting. 'There's no place at home' takes a ghost story and turns it into something fun and funny, with a mix of the banal and supernatural. 'Signs of the last days' Is a well observed character piece that I see as an all around tragedy and all too familiarly, skilfully told. Read for a book with stories with magical realism, that are accessible and take you to dark, sometimes fun, but always thoughtful places.
One of my favourite short story collections that I return to again and again. A skilful writer with a funny turn of phrase at times and fascinating subjects, including a rewriting of Beowulf set in East London, a woman obsessed with marginalia and a Turkish migrant child in London.
