ریل کی سیٹی صرف ریل کے سفر کی داستان نہیں ہے، یہ یادوں کا ایک قافلہ ہے جو پنجاب کے مختلف علاقوں سے گزرتا ہے اور کچھ آنسو، کچھ خوشیاں اپنے دامن میں سمیٹتا ہے، کہیں وقت کی بےرحمی پی نوحہ ہوتا ہے اور کہیں اپنوں کی بیوفائی کا ماتم ہے. ریل کے سفر کے ساتھ ساتھ ہی "تقسیم" کے اس آسیب کی وہ بھیانک پرچھائی بھی دکھائی دے جاتی ہے جو نجانے کتنے ہے گھروں کو ویران کر گئی.
ہمارے "اپنے" وہ لوگ جن کے ساتھ ہمارا صدیوں کا رشتہ تھا نجانے کہاں کھو گئے؟

Mohammed Hasan Miraj is a Pakistani writer who served in the army, was stationed at Siachen glacier and then worked in ISPR (Interservices Public Relations) where he made at least one movie and then retired as a major and went to the London School of Economics to earn a degree in communications. While working for ISPR, he wrote several very nice articles in Dawn newspaper, almost all of them little travel pieces about various places in Pakistan; these articles are rich with history and folklore and display an erudite, liberal, tolerant and sagely tragic spirit; they are also obsessed with the romance of train travel.
This apparently lifelong fascination with travel, history and trains has now been poured into his first Urdu book, a small gem called "Rail ki Seeti" (the train whistle).
Hassan Miraj follows the railway line from Rawalpindi down to Uch Sharif, with abundant branching trips along the way (basically covering Punjab, from North to South and East to West) and writes about almost every station along the way (including some stations that no longer exist or function). He gives us little tidbits of local history and anecdotes about celebrities and historical figures that originated from each terminus. He has clearly read widely and has managed to interview many people who remember events and people who are no longer with us.  Like any rational and empathetic person, he is filled with endless sorrow and angst at the partition of Punjab and the destruction of its composite culture and humanity in 1947. At every stop, he remembers the Sikhs and Hindus who once lived there and the multiple tragedies and atrocities that befell these towns in the holocaust of partition. As a result, the book really reads like an elegy for United Punjab, now gone and not likely to be put together again in the foreseeable future; in fact, as his book (especially the chapters on Jhang, Khanewal, Shantinagar and Rabwah) make clear, the trend is irrevocably in the opposite direction.
But with all this, I would still give the book 4 stars and not 5. Why?
1. The book works better if you already have a general idea of the history of the region and some familiarity with the artistic and literary celebrities of the early 20th century. If not, you may not get what the fuss is about. While he gives us a lot of information about each specific city or it's leading lights, there is no attempt to provide the reader with any overall picture of the history of Punjab, or for that matter, about the events of partition. This is not a defect as such, since this is exactly how books like this are usually written, but it does mean that books like this mean much less to outsiders and those who have no prior interest in the subject.
2. The books is written in the best traditions of "high church" literary Urdu prose, which means its language is flowery and ornate. Again, this is a selling point for many readers, but I don't read a lot of Urdu, and I tend to tire of this style by page 174. That's just me. More significantly, he also follows the genteel tradition of never speaking ill of the dead (and whenever possible, not even of the living) to the nth degree. Except for a few fanatics, who are damned by not being praised, everyone is treated with exaggerated respect and elaborate courtesies. Again, this is probably a selling point for many, but I would have preferred the occasional criticism. It does make you think, if every significant person in Punjab was such an angel, how and why did the place descend into genocide and ethnic cleansing on a scale rarely seen even in the blood stained history of the 20th century? Inquiring minds want to know, and Hasan probably has some profound observations on this topic, but he chooses not to share them in this book. This is probably due mostly to his generous and forgiving nature, but who knows, some of it may be in the category of "discretion is the better part of valor".
He has a fondness for local legends and he does not always feel it necessary to clearly separate historical fact from folk mythology, but this is not a major failing, since the context usually makes the distinction abundantly clear. Those who are familiar with our folklore will enjoy the references, those who are not, may be stimulated to read more. Overall, the book is a fascinating, informative and stimulating journey through our beloved Punjab; sometimes it is also unbearably sad. So is history.
Well worth a read.

محمد حسن معراج کی ریل کی سیٹی ایک تحقیقاتی کتاب ہے۔ ( یقیناً ایک کثیر سرمایہ اس کی تحقیق میں صرف ہوا ہوگا)۔ ریل کے وسیلے سے پنجاب کے سفر کی روداد ہے۔ ریل جہاں جہاں سے گزرتی ہے ان علاقوں کی تاریخ، اہم مقامات اور شخصیات کا ذکر ملتا ہے۔ ماضی اور حال ساتھ ساتھ چلتے ہیں۔ بیان دلچسپ اور ادبی ہے۔ مصنف صاحب مطالعہ شخص ہیں۔ اس کتاب کے ذریعے ایسے پاکستانی معاشرے کی کوشش کرتے ہیں جہاں سماجی اور خاص کر مذہبی رواداری ہو۔
ریل تو کراچی اور کوئٹہ تک جاتی ہے لیکن مصنف کا سفر پنجاب میں ختم ہوجاتا ہے۔ شائد سرمائے اور فرصت کمی آڑے آگئی ہوگی۔ لیکن امید کی جاسکتی ہے کہ مصنف اپنی اگلی کتب میں اس تشنگی کی تسکین کریں گے جو اس کتاب نے پیدا کی ہے۔ اس کتاب کا مطالعہ آپ کو سفر پر اکساتا ہے جو کہ سب سے خوش آئند بات ہے۔ سفر وسیلہ ظفر۔
اس کتاب کو سنگ میل پبلیکیشنز نے 2016 میں شائع کیا ہے۔ صفحات 222 ہیں اور قیمت بارہ سو روپے ہے۔

Beautiful prose laced with exquisite phrases full of nostalgia for what was and a longing for what could have been. This may not be an academic history of Punjab but it does tug at the heart with its stories and legends at almost every station of the train's journey through the province. By the end I was left wishing for a lot more than what was offered, particularly for some of the more obscure towns and stations mentioned in the book. Nevertheless, this cultural travelogue deserves high praise as a fine piece of Urdu writing.

Reading a book that connects you with your roots and forefather is much-loved pleasent experience. This book took readers to the past in one second and at other second brings back to the present, whole book take roller coaster ride which can travel anywhere, anytime. This is positive aspect of the book. But i don't know how i can explain the experience auther has shared in various points, the tales of desolated people. Who came or went from these cities in love of their new born states/cities.

Rail ki seeti is not only a travelogue it is a carvan which passed through different cities of the Punjab known as (لہندا پنجاب) shares the tails of sorrow and happiness of different cities. Readers somewhere feel tears in their eyes , at some points find happiness and at many places find merciless time and disloyalty of loved ones.
اجنبی شہروں مین رہتے عمر ساری کٹ گئی۔۔۔
One more aspect highlighted by the author in different cities is the pain of separation, which became the reason for the devastation of many homes. And the loved ones who had left us and mergence somewhere. This type of stories left pain in some corner of the heart.
Book is basically a nostalgic approach, which is aromatic, distinctive, and articulated one. This teaveloge fascinated the mind and tear- up the eyes, but the reader should have little know-how about the history to feel it.
In short! Rail ki seeti is a travelogue, travelling from civilization to civilization and tells the reader the difference of approache and divergence of attitude of the people of different areas. Stories of unsung heroshaves been shared here, who never got appraisal in past or today. He alsomade upp a relation between the old punjab and the new punjab, shared the reasonsforf the decline of the culture and language of Punjab.The authorr also discussed the issuesthath remain unexplored and somehow get explored but failed to get words and attention.

A cultural travelogue aiming to rise above the temporal and civilizational boundaries can't get any better than this. Miraj not only exhumes the cadavers of past lives of cities buried deep under the soil of time and prejudices, but also shows how important it is to tell and retell these stories. The craft as well as the ideological patchwork is not only profound but makes his prose unputdownable . Considering the kind of wordsmith he is, Miraj can do wonders if he sticks to his canvas as well as the palette. I believe the railroad network is intricate and the train can still go to many more invisible cities.

Muhammad Hassan Miraj is a man of many parts. As irrepressible sprit, he didn't allow a stint in the military to restrict him to drills and drudgery. Instead, being of a critical and probing bent he took pains to understand how it works and also its history, conventions and caprices. A deep love of his native Punjab and a romantic spirit, on the other hand, has inspired him to travel extensively through this varied land over the years, gaze at its rivers, talk to its people, absorb its mysticism, observe its architecture, listen to its lore, sway to its music and painstakingly unravel its multiple layers of history. He brings to light the famous daughters and sons of the soil as he visits their birthplaces, extols the large-heartedness and generosity of its people, and showcases its fecundity in making such profound literary, cultural, artistic, intellectual and spiritual contributions. The genre he choses to express all this is an interesting and suitable hybrid - oral history, travel, biography, geography, cultural studies, and more conventional history. His methodology is quite charming. He follows the train tracks - both because that provides an interesting historical frame as the colonial era rail network branches out in every direction and touches every place of importance, and also because train journeys remain ever so delightfully romantic.

If you meet him, as I have had the pleasure, Hassan is a youthful man of great charm with a perpetual sparkle in his eye and the sheer delight in what he writes about reflected in his beaming face. The same vibrance and sense of pleasure reflects also in his writing and he puts down a fluent, elegant prose. For me some of the biggest revelations were the wonderful additional bits of history associated with many of the small towns that I learnt through Rail Ki Seeti, even though I consider myself relatively less ill-informed. If anything one wanted Hassan to tarry longer in these places, describe in even more detail as he describes so well, and elaborate further on the multiple vignettes and historical aspects that he highlights. But then there is another Hassan that also comes across these pages and that is the political Hassan (who is mature and not youthful), the citizen Hassan and a Hassan to whom empathy, tolerance and humanitarianism are values he cannot help notice the absence of whenever he comes across such voids. Hence he movingly bemoans the loss of a syncretic, pluralist and enlightened ethos of which he finds glimpses in the ruins of the past. He critiques our regression on this score in the post partition years, dwelling also on the catastrophic human toll of that event. He also provides a sophisticated satire of our post independence travails at the hands of authoritarianism and religious obscurantism. On occasion I felt that this somewhat overwhelms his more pictorial and picturesque preoccupations as well as the nostalgia that his writing evokes. But we cannot tell writers to write the books we want them to write. What Hassan has produced is quite outstanding at multiple levels - both a celebration of Punjab as well as a lament. He has the talent, the discipline for research, the eye for detail, the aesthetics for the picturesque, and the vital flair and passion to write many more books. I just hope that he also writes a more detailed version of this one as well as there are many possible journeys in here which he points out to the reader and which one would love to continue under his inspired guidance.

Starting in martial Pindi, traveling through the enigmatic, plateaus of Pothohar, through the vast, verdurous, flat granaries of central Punjab and all the way to the tiled tombs and dunes of southern Punjab, the range and scope of this book displays the wanderlust of a true traveler at heart. Interspersed with exquisite verse from the various outstanding poets of this land, Hassan imbues his narrative with a deep sense of wistfulness and romance. That romance has of course always been an integral part of Punjab and its people - with its diverse and spectacular scenery, its remarkable tragic tales of love, its deeply devotional poetry, its history of survival despite myriad contestations and conflict on the basis of ethnicity and faith, its ability to embrace every outsider and further enrich the already complex recipe of what has been brewing for centuries in the cultural cauldron, and its ghosts from the past. Hassan, however, brings great ingenuity and individuality to this overview and comes up with a highly readable, poignant and memorable narrative. More power to his pen.

میں اس قابل تو نہیں ہوا کہ کئی کئی صفحات صرف کتاب پہ تبصرہ کرتے ہوئے لکھ دوں لیکن جو کچھ میری سمجھ میں آیا جتنا آیا وہ میں آپ کے سامنے پیش کر رہا ہوں:
اس کتاب میں مصنف نے راول پنڈی سے اوچ شریف تک ریل گاڑی کے ذریعے سفر کیا ہے اور اس راستے میں جتنے بھی علاقے آتے ہیں یا جتنے بھی سٹیشن پہ گاڑی دم بھرتی ہے ان کے بارے میں معلومات کا ذخیرہ ہمیں اس کتاب میں دیکھنے کو ملے گا ، غالباً 220-25 صفحات پہ مشتمل یہ پہلی کتاب ہے جس میں اتنی زیادہ معلومات موجود ہیں جو کہ سمندر کو کوزے میں بند کرنے کے مترادف ہے ، ایک چیز جو میں نے محسوس کی ہے وہ یہ ہے کہ مصنف نے 1947 کو ایک وسطی نکتہ بنایا ہے کسی بھی علاقے کی تاریخ بیان کرتے ہوئے یعنی لوگ سن آزادی سے پہلے کس طرح سے رہ رہے تھے اور بعد میں ان پہ کیا بیتی وہ سب ہمیں پڑھنے کو ملے گا۔
سرحد کے اُس طرف اور اِس طرف جو چیز متماثل ہے وہ یہ ہے کہ ہندوستانی اس بات پہ مصر ہیں کہ 47ء میں صرف ان پہ ظلم ہوا اور پاکستانی مہاجرین بھی یہی سمجھتے ہیں بلکہ ہمیں نصاب میں بھی یہی پڑھایا جاتا ہے کہ صرف ہمارے مسلمان ہی بڑی مشکل سے گھر بار چھوڑ کر اور اپنے پیاروں کو اپنی آنکھوں کے سامنے قتل ہوتے دیکھ کر ہجرت کر کے یہاں پہنچے !
جبکہ حقیقت یہ ہے کہ مسلمانوں نے بھی کوئی کسر نہیں چھوڑی اور غیر مسلموں کے ساتھ بہت ظلم کیا ہے جب وہ اپنے گھروں کو چھوڑ کر ایک نئے ملک جا رہے تھے تو ان کو جو مرد نظر آتا اس میں بڑے بچے بوڑھے کی تمیز نہیں تھی اس کو قتل کر دیا جاتا اور جو زیور نظر آتا یا خوبصورت عورت ملتی ان کو اپنا حق سمجھ کر گھر لے آتے اور بغیر نکاح کے اس وقت تک رکھا جب تک ہندوستان سے ان کا بلاوا نہیں آیا ،
اس کا یہ مطلب ہرگز نہیں کہ سارے مسلمان ہی ظلم پہ اتر آئے تھے بلکہ کچھ تو ایسے بھی تھے جنہوں نے اپنی بستی والوں سے مخالفت کے باوجود غیر مسلموں کو محفوظ رکھا اور سرحد پار میں بھی کچھ ایسے نرم دل انسان موجود تھے جنہوں نے مسلمانوں کو پناہ دی۔
اس کے علاوہ بھی یہاں مذہب کے نام پر جس طرح سے غیر مسلموں کے حقوق سلب کیے گئے وہ سب بڑی تفصیل کے ساتھ موجود ہیں ، اس کتاب کو پڑھ کر آپ ان حقائق سے واقف ہوں گے جن سے آپ آشنا نہیں ، اس کے علاوہ مصنف کا اندازِ بیان ہی ایسا ہے کہ آپ بوریت محسوس نہیں کریں گے

this book also deals with the decline of punjabi language and punjabi culture! many long forgotten heroes of this land who served their lives againt the salavery are celebrated in this book. a relation deveops between the centuries old tradition and folk lores of punjab and the present day conventional punjabi.
The subsequent fractures that appeared in the post-partition societies were unusual and have never been scrutinised properly. The explores the linguistic evolution, intensifying of religious identities on both the sides and new nationalistic narratives on both sides of the Punjab.
These are all issues that are still relevant but unexplored. One reason for this neglect is that both India and Pakistan have been interpreting their histories through their nationalistic narratives or the prevalent political discourse. Another reason is that the scale of the tragedy and trauma prevented those who suffered it from re-examining it. However, seven decades have passed and there is indeed a need to for “reimagining” Punjab in the light of the partition.
the authors narrates how the resetelments occured not only physically but also emotionally! how badly the people of that time went through the trauma of hijrat at that time which was planned for some other time in the future.
The love that we notice in the hearts of people of both sides of punjab, despite the religious differences, is due to the common human tragedy, dispite all the differences this unites them.
There is an utmost need of more books like this so people of now days can know the long lost history of their land.
The writer very beautifully narrates the historcal back grounds of many cities and the heroes that were conieved in the land of punjab.

ایک تحقیقی سفر نامہ ہے جو راولپنڈی سے شروع ہوتا ہے اور آپ کو چھوٹے چھوٹے گاؤں قصبوں اور شہروں سے ہوتے ہوئے اچ شریف تک ک لے جاتا ہے.
" اس ساری سڑک پر ہجرت کا تارکول اور یاد کی بجری پڑی ہے."
ہر سٹیشن پر رک کر حسن معراج کسی تجربہ کار ٹور گائیڈ کی طرح پہلے آپ کو اس علاقے کے نام کی تاریخ بتائیں گے کہ وہ کیسے پڑا. پھر بڑے ناموں کو گنوائیں گے جو اس علاقے میں پلے بھرے اور پھر وقت آنے پر یہاں سے کوچ کر گئے. ذکر تو آپ کو ان بزرگ ہستیوں کا بھی ملے گا جو انسانیت کا سبق سکھا گئے لیکن اپنے پیچھے نامراد مزار چھوڑ گئے.
پھر باری آتی ہے اس علاقے سے متعلق روایات اور قابل ذکر واقعات کی. تقسیم کے آنسو اور خون جو یہاں بہایا گیا. المیہ ان کی تحریر میں ایسا محلول ہے جیسے ہماری مٹی میں معصوم خون، جیسے ہمارے لیڈروں میں کرپشن.

پنجاب کا یہ سفر نامہ ایک یاددہانی ہے اس بات کی کہ ہماری تاریخ کتنی جھلسی ہوئی ہے یہاں کے درودیوار، گلیاں اور سڑکیں زخموں سے چھلنی ہے. زخم جو سوکھ تو چکے لیکن ان سے خون کی بو اب تک آتی ہے، سسکیاں اب بھی سنائی دیتی ہیں.
اور اس بات کی ہے یہ مٹی کتنے ہی عظیم, جابر حاکم کھا گئی. حاکم اپنا غضب جتنا ہی ڈھالے، آخر میں اس کا مقدر خستہ حالت مقبرہ ہی ہے. اس زمین نے کتنی ہی محبتوں کی موت دیکھی اور پھر کتنی ہی ایسی ادھوری محبتوں کو امر ہوتے دیکھا.
اس مٹی کا مذہب سے ایک خاص رشتہ ہے. جب امن کے دن دیکھے تو ایسے دیکھے کہ ہر گاؤں میں ایک ایک گلی کے فاصلے پر مسجد، گردوارہ، گرجا گھر اور مندر دیکھا. محرم کے آتے ہی سارا شہر کالی چادر اوڑھے دیکھا اور دیوالی پر کوئی تاریک راہ نہ دیکھی.
لیکن شاید اس زمین کو کوئی بد دعا ہے کہ اس نے مذہب کے نام پر ہی کڑوروں کا خون بہتا دیکھا. کیونکہ زمین کا کوئی مذہب نہیں ہوتا تو اس نے ہر سپوت سے ایک جیسا ہی سلوک کیا.
ریل کی سیٹی ضرور پڑھیں اور اور مت پنجاب کے ماتم زدہ کے سو سے دل زخمی کریں.
حسن معراج کے سندھ، بلوچستان اور سرحد کے سفر کا انتظار رہے گا.

If i have to describe this book in three words then I would say "Nostalgia, nostalgia, nostalgia". written upon almost all the town which come across train journey from RWP till Sadiqabad".

Wonderfully written account of towns, villages, settlements along the railway line starting from Rawalpindi to Multan. Urdu is fluent, so is the narrative that turns into commentary on recent themes in Pakistan. A good book for anyone studying 1947 as well.

🌟 یہ کتاب شروع کی تو لگا کہ یہ کسی انسان کا سفرنامہ ہے مگر جلد ہی مجھے میرے مشاہدے کی غلطی کا اندازہ ہوا ۔ یہ کتاب کسی ایک انسان کا سفر نامہ تو ہرگز نہیں ہے مگر ان لوگوں کا ہے جن کے زخموں کی حدت آج تک محسوس کی جا سکتی ہے

🌟 حسن معراج صاحب سے یہ میرا پہلا تعارف ہے یہ کتاب انہوں نے 2016 میں لکھی مگر اس سے پہلے ہی یہ مضامین سلسلہ وار ، ڈان میں چھپتے تھے اور پھر کتاب کی صورت میں منظرِ عام پہ آئے ۔

🌟 ریل کا سفر راولپنڈی سے شروع ہو کر اُچ شریف پہ مکمل ہوتا ہے کتاب کو سمجھنے ��یلئے کچھ وقت لگا کہ یہ کتاب فقط پنڈی سے اُچ شریف تک نہیں پر گردونواح کی کہانیوں سے بھری پڑی ہے ۔ اس کتاب میں اتنی تاریخ اور جغرافیہ ہے کہ اگر ہر حصے پہ چند زائد سطریں لکھی جاتیں تو کتاب کے اوراق ڈبل ہوجاتے۔

🌟 کتاب میں ہر اسٹیشن ، اس کے آس پاس کے علاقوں کی تاریخ ، اسٹیشن کے اور شہر کے نام کی تاریخ بھی تاریخ بیان کی گئی ہے ۔ حسن معراج صاحب نے کیا ہی خوبصورتی سے تقسیم کی کہانیاں اسٹیشنز ، شہر اور گاؤں سے جوڑی ہیں ۔ تقسیم کا دکھ بڑا دکھ ہے شاید اسی وجہ سے ہم آج تیسری چوتھی نسل بھی اسے محسوس کر سکتے ہیں ۔ شاید جب ہم آنکھ بند کر کے تقسیم کو محسوس کرتے ہیں تو ہم بھی کہیں نہ کہیں نا کہیں خود کو گرداسپور یا لاہور اسٹیشن پہ ہی کھڑے پاتے ہیں ۔ مصنف نے مختلف جگہوں سے لوگوں کے الفاظ بھی نقل کیے ہیں جو کہ لکھائی کو مزید خوبصورت بنا دیتے ہیں ۔

🌟 لکھاری نے کہیں کہیں طنزیہ بھی لکھا ہے جس پہ میں مسکراہٹ کے ساتھ ان کو سلام پیش کرتا ہوں کہ چھپانے دکھانے کا بھی خوب فن ہے اور قابلِ تعریف ہے ۔ کتاب میں ہمیں جگہ جگہ کرداروں کی تاریخ بھی ملتی ہے شہروں ، بستیوں کی سماجی اور تہذیبی تاریخ بھی اور کہیں کہیں تو باسیوں پہ سیاست کے اثرات بھی ملتے ہیں ۔ کہیں پردیس کا دکھ تو کہیں مذہبی شر پسندی کہیں مذہب کی محبت کہیں دولت کی ہوس ۔ سب کچھ بہت خوبصورتی سے بیان کیا گیا ہے

🌟 میں اس کتاب پر جتنا بھی لکھوں بہت کم ہے شاید اسکا حق پڑھنے والا ہی ادا کر سکتا ہے ۔ کہاوتوں ، کہانیوں ، تاریخ سے بھری یہ کتاب ہر فرد کو پڑھنی چاہیے ۔ نانک سے فرید تک ، اشوکا سے رنجیت تک سب کچھ تو ہے اس کتاب میں ۔ محمد حسن معراج کا شکریہ جنہوں نے اردو ادب ، نثر اور ہمارے لیے کیا یہ کام کیا ہے خدا انکو سلامت رکھے

بھڑک اُٹھتی ہیں کسی پچھلے سفر کی یادیں
ریل چلتی ہے تو سینے سے دھواں اُٹھتا ہے

ایسی ہی ایک ٹرین جب رات کی تنہائی میں پنڈی کے اسٹیشن سے آہستہ آہستہ سرکنے لگتی ہے، تو ایک صدی پرانی سیٹی فضا میں بکھرتی ہے۔ یہ صرف ایک سیٹی نہیں، پنجاب کے دل میں پیوست ایک لکیر کے زخم کی چیخ ہے. یہ لکیر کہنے کو تو چھوٹی سی ہے لیکن اتنی گہری گڑی ہے کہ نسل در نسل خون جوانیاں دینے کے باوجود اس کے مقدر میں پرانے کنوئیں جیسا اندھا رہنا ہی ہے

ریل اگلے اشٹیشن کی طرف بڑھتی ہے تو ایک کھڑکی سے جھانکتا ایک بوڑھا چہرہ دکھائی دیتا ہے۔ اس کی خشک آنکھوں میں برسوں کی جمی اداسی ہے بوڑھا ہر اسٹیشن پہ اترتا ہے آس پاس کے ہر گمشدہ گاؤں کی گلیوں میں بیتے دنوں کی راکھ کریدتا ہے. عمارتوں کے کھنڈر ہونے کی داستان سناتا ہے لفظوں کے دریچوں سے ماضی میں جھانکتا ہے جب تہوار، مذہب کی زنجیروں سے آزاد، ثقافتی ہم آہنگی کی ترجمانی کرتے تھے۔ جب بوٹا سنگھ کے دل کا رب، محمد دین کے اللہ سے خفا نہ ہوتا، جب کرامت مسیح کے خدا کو دیو کمار کے رام سے کوئی خطرہ محسوس نہ ہوتا۔ جب راوی کے کنارے ہنستے بچے کسی مذہب کے نمائندے نہیں بلکہ پنجاب کی کوکھ سے جنم لینے والے بیٹے تھے اور راوی کا پانی سب کو برابر سیراب کرتا تھا بھلا پنجاب کے پانی نے بھی کبھی کسی کو سیراب کرنے سے پہلے اس کی شناخت پوچھی ہے؟

لیکن پھر ترلوک کی ماں لرزتی آواز میں کہتی ہے: "پتر، تسی تے ترلوک دے یار ہو..." تو وقت تھم جاتا ہے۔ لفظ، پتھر نہیں رہتے، پانی ہو جاتے ہیں—بہتے ہیں، بہا لے جاتے ہیں۔ قاری کتاب بند کر کے ساکت ہو جاتا ہے۔ مگر ریل چلتی رہتی ہے، اِدھر کی لاشیں اُدھر ڈھوتی ، اُدھر کی لاشیں اِدھر لاتی..آزادی پھیل گئی تھی اور جان کے لالے پڑ گئے تھے..البتہ راوی کا گدلا پانی خون پیتا رہا بہتا رہا..مذہب کے نام پر بوئی پنیری کاٹی جا رہی تھی اور بعد میں اسی پنیری سے اپنے ہی ہم مذہبوں کے سروں کی فصل کاٹی جاتی رہی اور جا رہی ہے..


یہ کتاب فقط بہترین نثر نہیں، پنجاب کی سانسوں کا حساب ہے. پنجاب کا دکھ یوں رقم ہوا ہے جیسے کوئی صوفی اپنے محبوب کے فراق میں رقص کرتے ہوئے گریہ کر رہا ہو. ریل کی سیٹی، گویا تاریخ کے زخموں پر پڑتی اذان ہے.چیختی، دہاڑتی، یاد دلاتی کہ ہم نے کب، کس کے ساتھ کیا کیا؟ اور آج کیے دھرے کا کیا بھگت رہے ہیں.

222 صفحات پر مشتمل یہ کتاب میں نے پڑھ تو لی ہے مگر یہ فیصلہ نہیں کر پا رہی ہوں کہ یہ کتاب تاریخ اور جغرافیہ کو بیان کرتا سفرنامہ ہے یا مختلف علاقوں اور ان کے باسیوں کے بسنے اور اجڑنے کی روداد بیان کرتی آپ بیتیاں، وقت کی گرد میں دبی ہوئی تہذیب و ثقافت کا احوال سناتی یادداشتیں ہیں یا تقسیم کے وقت کے نوحہ کناں واقعات۔۔۔۔ یا پھر ان سب کا مجموعہ ہے۔

راولپنڈی سے اچ شریف تک ریل کی پٹری کے اردگرد بسی ہوئی دنیا کے باسیوں کی صدیوں پرانی کہانیوں اور ان کے محسوسات کا ایک سیل بےپناہ جو شروع سے آخر تک قاری کو اپنے ساتھ بہاتا چلا جاتا ہے یہاں تک کہ کتاب ختم ہو جاتی ہے مگر پڑھنے والے کو اپنی دنیا کا حصّہ بننے میں وقت لگ جاتا ہے۔

نثر ایسی خوبصورت، زندہ اور رواں ہے کہ یوں لگتا منہ میں شیرینی گھلتی چلی جا رہی ہے۔ موسیقیت اور غنائیت سے بھرپور قوافی کا مزاج لئے ہوئے جملے پڑھتے وقت زبان کو تو شیریں احساس دیتے ہیں مگر روح کو ایک بےنام سی کسک سے ہمکنار کر دیتے ہیں، تاریخ کے بارے میں آگہی تو دیتے ہیں مگر دل کو ایک عجیب سے دکھ سے دوچار کر دیتے ہیں۔ تقسیم کے واقعات پڑھتے ہوئے یوں محسوس ہوتا ہے کہ مصنف نے ان حرماں نصیبوں کی آہوں کو اور سسکیوں کو الفاظ کا پیرہن دے دیا ہے کہ پڑھتے ہوئے وہ سنائی دیتی ہیں۔

دل کے تار چھیڑ دینے والی اس کتاب کے الفاظ سے مفہوم تک کا سفر، چاہے وہ حال سے ماضی کا ہو یا ماضی سے حال کا، لوک داستانوں کا ہو یا دیومالائی قصّوں کا، لکیر کے اس طرف کا ہو یا اس طرف کا، آپ کو اسی ماحول کا باسی بنا دیتا ہے جس کا ذکر کتاب میں ہو رہا ہوتا ہے۔
