This paired beautifully with The Anxious Perfectionist for a week of reading that really altered my perspective on myself and life. While the latter book focused upon using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to address anxiety surrounding doing well in order to actually, you know, get things done - this book focused upon interrupting the stress response itself to allow oneself to better navigate life.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a remarkably effective form of therapy that I didn't even fully realize existed. It asks you to essentially have conversations with yourself about what you're going through to interrupt the fight or flight knee-jerk response that the body has to stressful situations. At the time of my life where I was reading this I was having pretty regular panic attacks - this book helped me unravel them to the point that they are nearly non-existent now.
I credit this book with a lot of my current ability to go through life more effectively. I've been able to do certain things that I've not done in years without anxiety in part due to having the DBT tools to navigate tough situations.
Not the easiest read, but an invaluable one if you're in a similar situation to mine.
Full of totally valid information, and also happens to be written by a female for the female perspective, as admitted by the author early in the text. In summary, eat healthy and be more self aware. I've just saved you two hours.
This is an effective book for counselors, clients, or anyone trying to cope with stress. It reads like a handbook, breaking down dialectical behavior therapy into layman’s terms. The book includes useful tools and exercises to help readers recognize and manage stress effectively.
“Accepting your actions and understanding how they occurred in context, even when you wish you'd acted differently, increases self-understanding and trust.”
To be honest, this is not the kind of reading that appeal to me. But then, like everyone, I have deadlines to meet, co-workers that I often want to shake, a maddening boss, some justified or unjustified fears that come to rot my daily life. So when this book shows up, I thought it would not hurt to take a look …
Concrete explanations and lot of exercises little binding but that require to put a little good will to help us better understand ourself. They help us to identify our sources of anxiety and the vicious circles that can result after brooding over our negative thoughts again and again. It is also interesting to see that the same word can have different importance and bring mixed reactions from people.
Obviously by reading some testimonies and the analyzes derived therefrom, it seems that it is only common sense that is need to succeed and that it's super easy to react as indicated ... If it were that simple!
This book does not need to be read in one gulp. Moreover, it took me a while to overcome it. Not because it was not interesting but I've needed some time to test the exercises. Yet, I do not all done ... So, I think this is a good tool to keep close at hand when one starts a spiral of bad thoughts or heavy stress period. You could then dive back into it to gain some perspective and allow yourself to stand back.
However I was slightly annoyed with all the references which the commun reader does not need. Even if actually, this brings credibility to the claim. Other than that, it's a good Informative guide to fight against stress. To keeping close by in case of stress emergency.
Stress Response is a wealth of user friendly information written by Christy Matta and supported with empirical research without being complicated. The reader gains a better understanding of how they react to overwhelming The strategies suggested by Ms. Matta throughout the book will require the reader to focus and journal the events that cause them moments of irritability, anger, sadness, confusion and hostility. The strategies suggested by Christy Matta for recognizing the components associated with difficult circumstances as they arise can be pragmatic. Keeping the documentation and applying the recommended techniques for handling stress is an awesome resource. The journal idea although is not a new concept is an excellent tool for individuals suffering with stress and under the care of a medical professional. This technique is critical in the treatment process for both the client and the medical professional partnership.
Crisis appear in various stages during a lifetime. They tend to always be an emotional and painful milestone that impacts the reactions to one's daily routine. Illness or death of a love one, lost of job, divorce are occurrences that last longer than a week and dealing with the day to day concerns may seem unbearable. I appreciated Ms. Matta's incorporation of realistic conflicting experiences of people as demonstrations for utilizing the practical tactics for coping with episodes of difficulty.
I recommend Ms. Matta's book Stress Response as a must read for everyone's personal library. I will share this well written resource with family and colleagues because there immunity of STRESS and its often negative effects it brings is never an option.
One of the things I can say off the bat about "The Stress Response" is that it is easily accessible and well organized about what stress is, how it relates to emotions, and how to examine emotional triggers that may lead to negative reactions brought on by stress. It is consistent information with respect to how instructions on mindfulness and cognitive vetting of emotional triggers approach dealing with variant stressors. Yet, I think approaches within "The Stress Response" don't take into consideration some of the more complex aspects of stress and their chronic nature over time, circumstance, and what can't be dealt with just by examining cognitive cues.
I did appreciate the hearty vetting of negative thoughts, emotional responses, positive affirmations/self-talk, and practical applications. There were a few examples of personal stories peppered into the narrative for clarity as well. I think this is a good work to start the process of being able to cope with stress and various stressors, but certainly not the only resource out there, and it could've been a bit more in its examinations than what it was.
Overall score: 3/5 stars
Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher New Harbinger Publications.
This is a useful book that mixes Dialectical Behavior Therapy with do it yourself techniques to face and manage stress in its various forms. As a psychotherapist I do not think it is enough but is a good starting point to check our strategies and probably move forward with the right help.

Be prepared for the usual DBT homework if you buy this book. Get a journal to go along with it, you'll need it. The unfortunate thing is that you need to -constantly- think of these exercises in order to get anything out of it. You can't sit down at the end of the day and try to write something; it needs to be on the top of your brain every moment of the day. I'm sorry, but I have a life first.
This book is very helpful in teaching how to relax and boost happiness. It is well laid out, making it easy to follow the necessary exercises and techniques. It teaches mood control; and the breathing exercises are particularly effective for reducing stress levels. I think, with practice, this book will be very useful for making long lasting changes to my life.
I liked this book over the others I've been reading because of the practice activities included. You use these activities to put what you just read into practice. I believe this will help me turn old habits out and create new ways of thinking and responding to stress.
