Pride or Prejudice? Nyah Beauford is at least one of those. Raised with a silver spoon in her mouth, she’s not used to not getting what she wants, and she for sure isn’t used to people speaking to her the way this rude furniture designer just did. Shai Jacobs is both proud and prejudice, against everything that Nyah stands for. But then again, she’s cute and she intrigues him. She’s also willing to admit her faults and take a step in the right direction. Is love enough to elevate them to common ground?
I'm just a girl in love with literature. My love affair with romance novels started with I was 13 and has flourished into an obsession. I've always been a writer. Even when I was a little girl, I always had a pen and a notebook poised to let something out. You Make Me Better is my first project that will be published and I am STOKED. My goal is to write stories surrounding positive black love, with a little humor tossed in.
Elevate Me gave me all the feels. This book was absolutely adorable. While Nyah and Shai were total opposites, they were so meant for each other. But, it took a minute for Shai to come to that realization. You see, Nyah was not the most likeable person but, in her defense, she was a product of her upbringing. Nyah is a spoiled socialite who was taught by her stuck up mama to look down on people of lower class and, honey, she passed that class with flying colors. The first time Nyah meets Shai, she's rude and offensive right from the jump. Oh but, he got her all the way together and, oddly enough, Nyah finds Shai's abrasive behavior attractive. She's not use to people calling her out and putting her in her place. Shai is just as attracted to Nyah but, he fights it. Her privileged lifestyle represents everything he detest. She comes from a world he wants no parts of. Nyah is just naïve and regurgitates everything her horrible azz mama has taught her and that Shireen taught her some f*cked up shyt. But, fortunately, Nyah wants to be a better person and Shai is more than willing to help he along her journey. While coming to terms with his attraction for Nyah, Shai is also dealing with mommy issues. His relationship with his mama was so fractured and rightfully so. Marissa did something so f*cked up to a 7 year old Shai that he just could not forgive. When his daddy reconciled with his mama, Shai was like "Nah, I'm good" and he meant that. For 25 years, he refused to have a relationship with his mama and his younger siblings. But, being with Nyah really made Shai start to think maybe it was time to finally forgive his mama. When Shireen called herself trying to come for Shai, Marissa read her azz for filth! Whew chile, she ate that azz up! Watching his mama defend him was a turning point for Shai. He and Marissa were finally able to have that much needed and long awaited conversation and clear up a lot of misunderstandings. I was so very happy when Shai and his mama were able to have a mother son relationship. I cried like a big baby when he finally let Marissa hug him. Elevate Me was an excellent read. It was sweet, sexy, sassy, and humorous. I highly recommend you add it to your TBR.
Nyah and Shai felt like fake enemies to lovers because their first interaction was absolutely terrible! Nyah came off as rude, snobby, and pretentious with her friends Amber and Melanie. I understood why Shai wasn’t feeling her and didn’t want to sell her anything from his store. It took Nyah buying his bed under a pseudo-name for her to buy something from him. And boy did she get the bed set and more that day! Shai’s character intrigued me because the same things he hated about his mother were the same thing he despised Nyah for but he was still attracted to her and wanted her. Nyah was used to living for her parents and fitting in this rich society she didn’t know how to think for herself or live for herself. Both had family trauma and secrets to work through because whew! I was a bit scared after seeing how chapter 14 started because it made me think Shai had given up on Nyah changing. I won’t spoil the ending but what a journey! I loved seeing the bond between Shai and his siblings and I felt better about Nyah’s dad in the end but again Mom was trash! Overall this was a great story about being true to yourself no matter what. Seeing Nyah and Shai experience that each for themselves as they worked through their issues was nice to see!
That's it, I'm going back to read all her old stuff. I thoroughly enjoyed this. This book is about 7 years old, and it shows you that Ashley has always been that girl. She writes great stories. It had all the elements of an AshleyNicole book: Laughter and silly banter, family; however good or bad they were, it had love and romance.
Omg!!! Shai and Nyah were hilariously annoying!! 😍 I loved this read from their very first encounter. Everything about them was so genuine! Shai had some hurt to let go off (still shocked about what was revealed… omg) and Nyah had some growing to do. I think they were perfect for each other because in my opinion they were able to understand each other’s world a little better. The writing was darn good and phenomenal! Happy reading 💖
Shai was something kind of wonderful... He was a well-developed, multi-dimensional book boo...... Nyah, not so much... or to be fair, she just wasn't my type of hype! Even through to the very end.... But I give her an A for effort... and she was a little bit hilarious without even trying!
Both of these characters had an interesting dynamic with their parents and I loved watching it all play out. More importantly, I really liked the flow and speed and how they built their relationship, even though it was a little fast, it still worked.
I was holding my breath about it being a HEA.... it was touch and go for a minute, but it all worked out..
Elevate Me! I think the title should have been "Girl you TRIED it" because BOY did Nyah try my goddamned nerves. I don't know how Shai dealt with it for so long and was able to be so patient with her because, in the words of Monica, I would have been 'SO GONE!'
Reading about Nyah makes me wonder if I was that insufferable at 23. At 25 now, I know it seems a bit pretentious to speak on how a 23-year-old acts, but good GOD did I want to smack her throughout the entire first half of this book. Not only just because of her sheer ignorance but also because of the extent of her naivety.
That aside, I really enjoyed this book. I liked that AshleyNicole didn't sugarcoat or play down Nyah's misgivings. A lot of times, authors will really hold back on giving their main characters too many flaws I think for fear that the reader will end up hating the character. But I think it's important sometimes to have characters start at the bottom, that way their growth is that much more poignant and valuable. At the end of this book, there is a distinct difference in both the way Nyah acts and thinks and it just makes the journey that much more rewarding.
I would like to say it's hard to believe that people go around the world thinking and behaving the way Nyah and her friends did but saying that would be a straight up lie. Because of the way Nyah was raised and the "values" instilled in her by her miserable mother, Nyah believed anyone who didn't have a prestigious name or old money, was not worth her respect or just basic comment decency. Meeting Shai Jacobs, a man who could enjoy the same perks Nyah does, having 'well off' parents of his own, helps flip Nyah's entire world view right on its head. He's worked for everything he has, takes care of himself and the people around him but doesn't look down upon or pity people who Nyah would consider "beneath him" ... you know, he acts like a decent human being! I just really enjoyed seeing the dichotomy between these two people who had backgrounds so similar, they very well could have had the same exact outlook and ideals.
What I realized while reading this book and in particular while reading about Shai and his issues, is that AshleyNicole is an equal opportunity defamer when it comes to her characters. The females in her novels have issues and baggage that they need to work through, the males also have baggage that they have to work through as well. Shai played a large part in Nyah's mental and emotional glow up by calling her out on her bullshit and making sure that she knew that regardless of who she was, she was responsible for her actions and had to accept the consequences of those actions. But he also had a bit of mental growth to endure as well and it was really gratifying to witness it.
I read so many of these books and the men are just these perfect specimens who are only in the book to look pretty and fix everything that is wrong with the woman in their lives. Very rarely do I come across a book that has a male character that doesn't just have all of their shit together and has to grow and mature right along with their significant other. The emotional rollercoaster that Shai went through in dealing with the residual hurt from being abandoned and feeling betrayed was painful and tough at times to read but it was also refreshing because it's just not something that I am used to getting.
Emotional and mental deficiencies aside, I need me an original Shai Jacobs design ASAP!
Ashley Nicole has quickly worked her way into my must read list of authors. This story solidified her place securely.. In this story Nyah was the cutest most naïve lil lady I've read in one of Ashley's storylines. She made me laugh out loud at the things she did not know. Shai was so cool, suave and sexy and all. I liked the way Nyah manipulated her way into his heart. Shai was a tough butt to crack- pun intended.. Mostly, I understood him better after Nyah convinced him to give his mom and dad a break. Nyah's fake friends and her awful mom were just pitiful and unnecessarily uncalled for. They added the villain factor to the story. Overall, I loved the sexyiness, the sweetness, the funny moments and the wonderful storyline. In a word, this story was magnificent. I recommend you read it wholeheartedly! I love me some Shai!
Oh my goodness!!!! Ashley this book was everything. Shai was just ugh, my Shai. Lil Bit was so naive and cute and funny. I just loved it. I laughed and cried. I didnt want it to end. You never disappoint. I could give it 10 stars!!!!
This book was my introduction to AshleyNicole and it is what made me scour her catalog to read everything she has written. It began a three year love affair with her work. This is a book you can read over and over and it will never get old.
A great Sunday read that once I started, I couldn’t stop. Having read quite a bit of this author’s work so far, I could tell this was some of her earlier work simply due to the editing errors. But none of that took away from the story. This was minimal drama, but heavy on the romance. Which is exactly what I wanted.
Sweet naive Nyah had to learn and Shai was the perfect person to teach her. Now I only wished someone would’ve learned her despicable mother. But maybe the best revenge was cutting her out.
Ashley Nicole has me in my feelings with her latest. Emotional roller-coaster to a perfect finish. Shai aka I don't take no mess versus Nyah aka the pretty snob. When their worlds collide...baby hold onto your seat. Shai a furniture designer and owner of trendy furniture store meets Nyah the "unemployed pretty princess" while she is shopping with her cousin. Sparks fly when Nyah makes a comment that set Shai on fire. Shai gives Nyah a taste of her own medicine and a connection is made.
When I say I love how these two worlds and characters collide. How Ashley Nicole pulls at your heart strings on this project. How she makes you laugh at quirky times in this book. They way she makes you want to highlight a whole chapter in the book because you had to read it three times because the dynamics of the scene was on point. Girl bye..
My only critique in the book was their were a few typos but as a whole this book was awesome. This is Ashley Nicole sixth published books and you get to see her growth in this one. Awesome job Ashley Nicole...get up and take a bow.
Little Miss Prissy, Nyah, is super snooty and looks down on those who are not wealthy. She lets everyone walk all over her, beginning with her pretentious mother, who holds the purse strings, and therefore the power over Nyah.
As a result, Nyah must marry the man her mother chooses for her; dump all of her dreams and associate with the "right" people because her uppity mother says so.
Well when she walks into Shai's high end, furniture design studio, spouting all of that elitist nonsense, Shai quickly puts Nyah in check and then it's on!!!!
Absolutely enjoyed this story. ( However, the editor should have corrected all of the misspellings BEFORE publishing because this should have been 5 stars!)
Opposits attract is there of Elevate me. Nyah is naive and priviledge. Shai is a World wise and predjudiced aguanta the wealthy. They are atrracted to each other anyway. She's learning nothing is as she was taught and respect and wealth are not entertwined. He is learning forgiveness. They are learning love is not a perfect thing but worth the fight. A done to earth real World lovestory. Lol read. A recommend read.
Kudos to Ashley Nicole. This book was such a good read. Took me a few hours to get through. I loved how Shai and Nyah complimented each other. The book kept me laughing the entire time with Shai crass-ness as miss Nyah would say. Loved Shai's backstory too. I defintely recommend to anyone looking for a good read.
Nyah was down right insufferable 🙄 about the first 40% of the book I couldn't stop rolling my eyes, smacking teeth & taking deep breaths. I understood she needed to be naive to truly sale her role in the book, but she was irritating me to my core. I hated that she just couldn't get a backbone, not necessarily standing up to her mama but at least being firm in whatever she believed. But then again, when God was handing out trashy ass mamas, it's like Nyah got a double serving with Shireen. I loved how Shai ate her up & then spit her out. But of course that was only the beginning of their love story. Sometimes this gave me grooming vibes, just because of the age difference & how he spoke to her. But towards the end, I realized Shai was just encouraging her to ask for what she wanted & not try to use her status to get it. When it was revealed Shai issues with the afflueny & his own mom my eyes were wide open. In the beginning, I felt like he was being petty towards his mom & hurting his siblings in the process. But then when the FULL story was revealed I was shocked. Shout out to Shai daddy for not letting ANYBODY including his mama mess with his babyboy. & Marissa showed us that she didn't play about her child either when she read the Beaufords. I literally was screaming when she said "you married into money while me and my son was born into it" 😂😂 like yes Mama Jacobs, you better clear a bihh behind your son. It took me a min to fall in love with Nyah & Shai as an item, but towards the end they were deff meant for each other.
This is one of AshleyNicole earlier works & let me tell you something, sis just don't miss 👏🏿
This was not one of my favorites. I spent most of the book not liking either Shai or Nyah.
At 23 years old, Nyah is rich, spoiled, judgmental and completely naive to the world around her. She is exactly as one would expect. The reader isn't supposed to like her. I, however, did empathize with Nyah. She was a product of her environment. My biggest issue with this book is Shai.
Nyah is a stuck up brat from the moment she walks into Shai's business (a furniture showroom) and he lays into her without mercy. From that point on, he's pretty awful towards her. He's cold and demanding, even when they have sex. Most of their sex scenes (especially the long drawn out oral sex scene) were cringe worthy. He was also very controlling. He kept doing these Jedi mind type tricks on her, constantly. Also, his inner turmoil in relation to his sister, brother, and mother just further solidified my dislike for him.
Timmy and Stacey (his brother and sister) love for Shai was the best part of this book. I enjoyed the familial relationship between Shai's family is what made this book bearable. I much preferred that storyline than the romantic storyline.
This book was okay, but can't say I'd recommend this book.
I give this book 3.5 round up, but considered rounding down due to editing/grammatical errors. Sometimes it messed up the flow of the book. But in the end I found it different from typical rich person falls for person who seems to be from a lower class but isn't really type of story once you bring in Shai's family dynamics.
Nyah was such a bitch early on and her friends were straight trash. Bridgette was a real one and I liked her from jump. Shai could be a jerk sometimes but overall loved him. Loved his relationship with his siblings, his father and how things evolved with Marissa. Love the journey him and Nyah took. She was so naive and spoiled in the beginning but falling in love looks good on her.
Side note: Nyah doesn’t seem like a name rich prissy people would give their child
I was shocked about how soon the situation with Nyah and Alcott relationship progressed and was happy Bridgette saved her from making a grave mistake. It was either right away or just a month after things with Shai went left. Glad things all worked out as they should have with her Gargoyle. I love their catch phrases "stop being mean" and "you're so crass"
There's still a few more books by Ashley Nicole I need to read. Looking forward to them
What really made me like this book was the character development of both characters but especially Nyah cause home girl was tripping in the beginning & had me questioning if the author knew what she was doing but she did, she definitely knew what she was doing & I loved it. Basically Nyah is a boujee b & is apart of the upper class & was raised to act like but Shai was not going for that & let her know of jump that he wasn’t feeling her attitude or who she was as a person. Eventually Nyah caught on & they started hanging & other things 😏 Shai really forced her to change without making her feel like she was forced to change. He just taught her that her snobbish ways just wasn’t it. I gave this book 4.5 stars because was the third act breakup at 90% really necessary but it was still good & I am glad he made her sweat cause what she said was outta pocket.
AshleyNicole is one of the most consistent authors around. She takes characters I have nothing in common with , sucks me into their lives and makes me feel like they are real people! Makes them relatable and loveable despite some huge hang ups, flaws and insecurities. Nah I'd a spoiled rich girl and Shai is an artist who was abandoned by his mother at a young age and raised by his dad. Noah's parent run her life and thought while Shai is his own man . When their paths cross there is definite dislike but still attraction. They act on the attraction and then both start working on themselves and eventually fall in love each have struggles and things that need to be settled with the other women in their lives before they can come together completely. Great read and cousin Bridegette and Shais mom are definite lifesavers in this story.
Nyah and Shai were such an unlikely pair that they honestly went real well together, oddly.
I like that Shai put Nyah in her place from jump. She shouldn't have been talking about his shop as if he was below her. I was sure she'd go whine to mommy and daddy, yet she wasn't like that. The relationship with her parents was very disturbing and I'm glad she cut those ties. Shai taught Nyah so much and she truly became his freak; ain't mad about that at all😏. I love the relationship Shai and his dad had. I'm glad his mom told him her full truth and that they have a real relationship now. His love for his younger brother and sister and their love for him was so heartwarming. Loved that part of the story.
This unlikely pairing made for a really good story. I'm sure I'll see them in stories to come as I continue to make my way through AshleyNicole catalog.
Shai: all I could think about was the scene from James Brown with Chadwick as the lead. His pain was felt and the situation with his parents ran deep. I just with the conversation happened sooner..
Nyah: she was what I expected from anyone from high society trying to fit it with regular folks, she was simply ignorant of the basics. And being raised by that nasty woman and passive man. 🤷🏾♀️
My fav in this book was: Bridgette
She called Nyah out on her BS and was a supportive friend the entire book from beginning to end. Her and those damn keys 🔑 did it for me.
This book was excellent. It was different in a very good way. Shai was exactly who Nyah needed to redirect her bias thinking and upbringing. I like that he was patient with her to teach her things she didn't know. The story line between Shai and his parents had me in my feelings, and I may have shed a few tears. I'm glad he came around with his younger siblings as well. It took some time but glad Nyah learned to stand up for herself, defend for him, and made her own money. I enjoyed reading this book.
Where do I start with this story! This book had me cheering at one point and losing my religion at another point! The prejudice from people born into wealth and them thinking... this world only exists for them... made me wanna holler! But there is good that came outta this story revolving around Shai and Nyah💜 thank goodness for cousin /friendship- Bridgette never wavered in her beliefs, feelings or how she felt regarding her evil, spoiled, nasty family . No spoilers.., great read!
Look, I thought Tory was my favorite...NOPE Shai Jacobs definitely has the #1 spot now. Nyah was something but I definitely understood. I was actually mad at the end when I saw marriage to that cornball but that was an amazing runaway bride scene! Bridgette was the best cousin/best friend Nyah needed in her life. Those other 2 chicks who I will not name can go trip and fall in a ditch. Great Book!!
This was a great read. Both Nyah and Jacob were a LOT individually, but Nyah was the worst. I fussed at the pages as I read each chapter, but then I realized that at the end of the day, Nyah didn't know any better because she was a product of her environment. Rich, wealthy, well-to-do, whatever you want to call it, that has always been her life, so readjusting and growing doesn't happen overnight.
This was more than I ever expected. I know this author never disappoints but Shai was a different character for her and the storyline with Nya made me want her jumped at first. I really loved the ending. I can't discuss anymore or I'll spill the heart scenes. It's deep.
Shai Jacob's owns his business making high-end one of a kind furniture by hand. He meets Nyah Beauford, a spoiled rich young 🚺. The relationship is rocky but thru it all his 💘 for her prevails. It is one of my favorite novels by the author AshleyNicole.
