First time in paperback—the celebrated new approach to effective parenting, as seen on 20/20. Mac Bledsoe knows a thing or two about parenting. Aside from being father to football great Drew Bledsoe, the elder Bledsoe spent 29 years teaching high school and coaching sports. This trade paperback edition urges parents to rethink their approach to discipline and let kids make some of their own decisions and experience the consequences early on, so that they can act responsibly later.
• Features a foreword by Drew Bledsoe and an endorsement from 20/20 Â's John Stossel
The most important concept I took away from this book is that at two years old you control all the decisions for your child. From bed time and what they eat to who their friends are and what they watch on tv. When your child is sixteen they control all these decisions. How do you manage this transition? Mac suggests we manage it the way we teach kids to ride a bicycle. Expecting frequent failures and providing encouragement for each new attempt to handle responsibility. He also reminds us that we are modeling how we want them to live, even when we say otherwise.
This book is full of realistic yet positive parenting strategies that gave me a lot of things to think about. I’m actually going to read it again right away because there is just so much to digest.
I loved so many things about this book. I took a lot of good away from it and hope that I can implement his ideas. I think his ideas just make sense and I love the concepts behind each idea. Great book!
Admittedly, some of the details in this book are quirky. But his main point is a good one, and he gives practical advice for how to achieve the goal of raising kids who are self-disciplined and independent yet still share your values. It's also well-written.
One of the better parenting books I've read- practical advice you can start right away. I'm definitely going to put some of his suggestions into practice. Recommended!
