It's been a long time since Jamie McCrimmon remembered anything about his travels with the Doctor, but his visit to Helicon Prime just won't stay hidden... but why remember their murder investigation now?
Just wonderful! This one has the (Second) Doctor and Jamie at a posh resort trying to solve a murder. The wonderful Frazer Hines brings back Jamie beautifully and doubles as the Doctor in a delightful rendition that really makes the audience believe they are both reprising their roles. Some of the twists of the mystery are bit obvious, but the performances easily make up for the predictability. I’m not usually a fan of the narrated stories, I much prefer the full-cast dramas, but this one shines quite well.
Aaaah! I've missed Doctor Who so much! I've missed Jamie and the Second Doctor!
At the moment I can't really think of anything to say about the story itself. It was just such a treat to hear something from Doctor Who again that I was smiling throughout the whole story.
The Doctor and Jamie have a holiday, only problem is someone is murdered in the hotel and the killers are after a lost treasure. This is a fun, if somewhat predictable story. The joy is in Fraser Hines portrayal of the 2nd Doctor, and the interplay between the two characters. A good listen.
The Companion Chronicles isn't a range I visit too often, but every time I do it's always a joy, very rarely do I come across a very weak or terrible story since most of the stories in this range are spectacularly well-written and produced. I was a little nervous about this story because of its mixed reviews but after all this time, I caved in and decided to give it a go.
After being caught in battle, Jamie has regained his memories of his visit to Helicon Prime with The Doctor and he's ready to tell his nurse before he forgets. Murders are being committed and a treasure is to be found at the intergalactic holiday destination that is surrounded by the golden section, which makes it almost possible for people to feel angry or emotional towards their fellow holidaymakers, deepening the mystery.
I was pleasantly surprised by this story, it's a very alien story with some terrific sound visuals and fun ideas. I'm quite surprised Jake Elliot hasn't written another story for the company, he really has The 2nd Doctor and Jamie here down to a tee and I like how he highlights the more devious side to this incarnation of The Doctor. The Murder Mystery is easy to guess and could have easily lost a point in my rating, however, the writer really pulls the rug out from under you at the last minute and takes you by surprise with a twist!
Overall: It's a very fun murder mystery that highlights the more devious side of The 2nd Doctor and how much he and Jamie get on well together. Frazer Hines did a brilliant job narrating this story, his impression of Troughton's Doctor never ceases to amaze me. Suzanne Procter was great as well as Mindy who I found really likable! 8/10
Frazer Hines reads this adventure of a dazed and confused Jamie (because of a lightning strike) suddenly recalling one of his adventures with The Doctor. He and The Doctor have left Victoria behind and have arrived on a leisure center world, where almost at once someone is murdered. There is a very obvious bad guy and a pretty obvious hidden villain. So, what might be a surprise ending really isn't one, mainly because the Companion Chronicles all use the same formula of one character recounting an adventure to someone else who does not really have that character's interests in mind.
What should've been an interesting tale about Jamie regaining memories of his time with The Doctor turned out to be not as interesting. Not as triumphant of a return. Memory loss is annoying.
Helicon Prime is the second of Big Finish's Companion Chronicles I've listened to. The format is somewhat between a true audiobook and one of Big Finish's audio plays. Frazier Hines reads the story and plays the parts of Jaime, and, surprisingly well, the Second Doctor (I didn't realise it was Frazier at all at first). Suzanne Proctor plays the part of Mindy Voir, and then Frazier reads the descriptions. It helps that in this story, Jaime is actually telling his story to someone else. Also, the story is split into two parts - with a cliffhanger and theme music at the break.
The story is about Jaime, who suddenly remembers an adventure he had with the Doctor on Helicon Prime, a resort in the Golden Section of the galaxy, where there is no violence due to the pacifying effect of the Golden Section. However, suddenly people are getting murdered. It turns out the deaths are because a small group of people is looking for a long-lost treasure.
I enjoyed the story - I listened to Part I in December and Part II today. It's a good tale, though at times it was a bit confusing. I was a bit nervous about this format - often I find it difficult to concentrate when listening to audio books - it starts to fade into background noise and I fail to pay attention. But this format, with two actors performing their characters, then one reading the rest of the story, works surprisingly well. I have two more of these Companion Chronicles that I've purchased, and if they are as good, I'll have to look into purchasing more of them from Big Finish. Also, these stories are like having the Missing Adventures or Past Doctor Adventures book series back again, but in a much faster format (it's a single CD, so less than an hour to listen to the entire thing). There are two trailers, an interview with Fraser Hines, and a very strange music-only track included on the CD as bonus tracks.
I highly recommend Helicon Prime. The format also worked really well. And I enjoyed listening to a new and original Patrick Troughton (Second Doctor) story.
Frazier Hines makes an excellent storyteller and gets a chance to recreate both Jamie and the Second Doctor. It's a wonderful thing to listen to Frazier Hines evoke the spirit of Patrick Troughton through a performance that is very convincing. As for the story itself, it is entertaining if at times confusing. There's a murder mystery and a treasure hunt. It also ends on a cliffhanger and the continuity is confusing. Fans of the hypothetical season 6(B) will enjoy this. There's reference to missing companion Victoria, as mentioned previously in the televised story The Two Doctors. Personally I would have preferred if this story had either taken place after Fury From the Deep; therefore explaining her absence, or had included Victoria as part of the story. Perhaps it was just easier to have only the Doctor and Jamie take part in this adventure?
Frazer Hines turns in an excellent performance as both Jamie and the Second Doctor and sets the bar for future releases.
This is a rather mixed tale of Fifth Element-style singers and Starwars Universe aliens somewhat light hearted in nature.
Oh. And I guessed immediately who the final villain of the piece would turn out to be despite some red herrings being thrown in to add verisimilitude to the proceedings.
I've seen some rave reviews of Helicon Prime out there; I'm afraid it didn't especially grab me, as I thought the plot was pretty unoriginal, but I felt that the planet of Helicon itself was well portrayed and that Frazer Hines made a decent effort at catching Troughton.[return]
While the story here isn't anything spectacular, Frazier Hines reading is amazing. His impression of Patrick Troughton's Doctor is spot on, and he's just a joy to listen to.
A fun Doctor Who audio adventure featuring the second Doctor as told by his companion Jamie, played by Frazier Hines. Frazier Hines does the narration and he does a great job at telling the story as well as doing a spot on imitation of Patrick Troughton, the actor who played the second Doctor. The story was a fun mystery story that was not too unique, but it was very diverting. The author did a great job of capturing the spirit of the old series, while presenting an entirely new story.
