Troubled times and troubled love abounds in this sword and sorcery novel. A male witch and a soldier, worlds apart in culture and experience, meet under the most difficult of circumstances. Together, they make their way through a treacherous, magical world, where politics really are cutthroat, and where their new love is threatened from outside and within, where even a single misstep could be deadly. Broken Sword combines all the fun of a swashbuckling adventure with the darker edge of the supernatural, transporting us to another realm, where high fantasy, romance, and magic all meet. Emily is a writer of erotic romance, dark fantasy and gay fiction. She is also an illustrator, crafter, blogger, poet, reviewer, adventuress and general purpose smart ass.
I do not usually review books that I read, however, I will on this one. I will agree that the world building was decent but not the best. It wasnt until I was 65% of the way through the book that it was confirmed that this story was about vampires. The characters were lack luster and almost boring. There was not enough backstory to Lorn, some to Deon, to build my emotions for them.
The prose is of a haughty attitude as though the writer is trying to talk down to the reader in my opinion. Too formal of language (old English usage of speech) for this story and not consistent throughout. It was as though multiple authors wrote the story. Which will bring me to the many issues with grammar. Too many to count. Half thought out sentences that had to be reread to understand.
I hope this was a first book of the author, since the idea of the story was a good one. It would be interesting to see the next book to hopefully see growth with the author
I was really disappointed with this. I decided to read this because I liked another book by this author. It began well, a little cryptic in some places but the basic setup was okay. But then it dragged on and on and on and on. I skipped through about 70%, just reading a page here and there to make certain nothing much happened, and it didn’t. I don’t care much for novels that just seem to flog a dead horse. If they work a certain theme without really developing the story, they become tedious. That’s what this book did for me. I would say at least one, if not two of my stars are really for that last novel that I enjoyed.
This was much better than expected - when one is digging through the basement of Kindle Unlimited, expectations tend to be low. This was actually quite well written and had some brilliant passages. They didn't always fit together perfectly, but overall it was enjoyable.
The story is a slightly Gothic fantasy trope about a wizard and a vampire. Sort of. The vampire escapes his evil vampire sire and goes to live in the charming village. The evil vampire sire decides to invade, and the charming village fights back to a degree.
The characters aren't highly developed, but they are likeable and the story is fun. The emphases seems to be more on worldbuilding and I think it comes together pretty well. It isn't a long book, so don't expect epic fantasy, but it's an enjoyable short romantic fantasy (m/m).
