Based on the book by David Guterson, a movie starring Ethan Hawke and Max Von Sydow details the riveting and tragic tale of the suspicious drowning of a fisherman and the Japanese-American man accused of the murder, set against the backdrop of San Piedro Island. Original. Movie tie-in.
I loved this book because it takes place in the Northwest - mostly in the San Juan islands. My Mom's from Seattle and we've visitied there a lot over the years. It gave me a new appreciation for the plight of the American Japanese during WWII and what it was like to be relocated in your own country.
It was alright. I started off slow and eventually, became more suspenseful. The stories were interesting, but it was hard to get into this book. It was predictable and not as captivating of a murder mystery as I thought. I enjoyed seeing Hatsue's views in the book.
